Mantokuji is so grateful to all the hard- working volunteers who put in many hours cleaning up the temple hall and temple grounds, receiving/sorting/pricing all the bazaar items, and setting up, manning, and breaking down the different areas for plants, furniture, crafts, jewelry, cement pots/tools, rummage, clothing, food, collectibles, and better items. A sincere mahalo to anyone who generously donated items for sale or ingredients used in our food sales. And of course, thank you to all those who helped and supported us through their purchases. I am happy to report progress in both of our current major projects, with thanks to the many generous donations and grants we received during our recent fundraising campaign and to the work of our project consultants and their team of experts. We have accepted a work proposal from a local contractor for Mantokuji’s Bell Tower restoration and reconstruction project. We ask for your understanding and patience as the work will affect access to the area surrounding the bell tower. We will do our best to maintain safe access to the Nokotsudo. The Board has also met with our Shoreline Erosion project consultants and we’re awaiting further information regarding a proposed erosion control plan. While fundraising efforts and work projects require much time and attention, deeper focus is on continuing our practice of Soto Zen rituals and traditions. This month we celebrate the Buddha’s birth, Hanamatsuri. Mantokuji will be hosting a Hanamatsuri service on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 10:00 am officiated by Reverend Hirosato Yoshida of Soto Mission of Hawaii. ReportsThank You for Your Generous Support!42nd Annual Bazaar on Sunday, March 3rd

The month-long preparation by dedicated members and friends of Mantokuji culminated on March 3rd at a verysuccessful 42nd Mantokuji Bazaar. It took a community . . . the generous donors, volunteers who hauled, cleanedand set up the hall and food concession, cooks and bakers who prepared Mantokuji favorites, bread, jams, scrumptious desserts and meals for the workers, those who came to sell and cashier and everyone who came to buyand support this worthwhile fundraiser... thank you. It was hard work but “many hands made light work” and a lot offun. We are truly grateful.

In Memory of Sally YoshinaBy Rev. Kenji Oyama, Seiryuji (Yamagata, Japan)

Sally Yoshina, together with her husband Howard, were steadfast supporters of Mantokuji. Althoughthey lived in Hilo on the Big Island, they came to help twice a year for the O-Bon Festival in July, andfor the annual Bazaar. They also joined us for the annual Fujinkai Conference several times, andnormally spent the Christmas and New Year holidays on Maui.

I thought that Sally felt a strong obligation and sense of pride toward Mantokuji which was foundedby her father, the Reverend Sokyo Ueoka, and it was her passion to do what she could for thetemple. With Howard’s support and understanding, they made many impactful contributions throughout the years.

Sally and her sisters, Clara Sodetani, Marion Watanabe and Carol Lau donated the funds to repair the sanmon gatewhich is the official entrance of Mantokuji.

The Yoshina’s also donated the commercial refrigerator and freezer, and donated a large amount for the fence, wheelchair lift, and temple re-roofing project. This is only from what I know during the short time that I was theminister of Mantokuji so I am sure this is just a few of the things that they did.

Because of their contributions, they were one of the recipients of the Centennial Award given at the MantokujiCentennial Celebration in 2006.

I believe that Sally lived a frugal and simple life and made many sacrifices so that she could help Mantokuji. Sheshared with us many of her valuable stories from her childhood and youth growing up in Paia. And many of us havememories of being scolded and given instruction and advice by her that may have helped us in our life.

We are very grateful for all that she and Howard did for us and for Mantokuji.

She leaves us having passed on the legacy of the resilient spirit of Mantokuji which time and time again have keptthe temple surviving throughout its history.

Finally returning home to Paia, may she rest in peace together with her husband, Howard, and her family.
