For many young Chinese students who have grown up in China, it is difficult for them to understand the complex job application process adopted by international companies. For someone who was born in China, grew up in Hong Kong and then settled in the West, I feel I am in a good position to bridge the knowledge and skills gap experienced by fellow Chinese people who have lived most of their lives in China.

When we first started promoting the idea of a cross-cultural career coaching service amongst young Chinese university students, the concept was totally revolutionary. I knew that career coaching was a much-needed service for ambitious Chinese graduates who aspired to be truly successful future international professionals in the global business world, inside or outside

Consulting, we strive to bridge the cultural differences to achieve optimal

communication and connection.

At Mandarin Consulting, we all have a huge sense of pride and achievement working with the many young Chinese who we have helped to embark on a highly successful career in the West, from mature professionals in their forties to high-school A level students. The knowledge and skills we have coached our candidates on are important not only for successful job applications but also for the rest of their professional lives! Our people continue to deliver outstanding experiences, with extensive candidate feedback telling us that we have made a real difference in their career journeys. I would like to thank all our people for the contribution they have made in achieving this.

Looking ahead, as someone who has a deep personal experience of cross-cultural issues, I can see that we are in a world full of opportunities for young Chinese. Relations between China, the UK and the US have never been better with a shared

China. Our mission is to change people’s lives! At Mandarin Consulting, our people play the most critical role in delivering the optimal experience for our candidates. We have a large team of carefully selected dedicated and experienced Western professionals in the UK, US and China, with multi-industry experience engaged in coaching, with the support of bilingual Chinese professionals who have an in-depth understanding of our clients’ needs.

We are also proud to say that we have the largest team of Career Consultants working in the UK, US and China who provide valuable free career consultations to students about the early stages of research for job opportunities, the application process for internships, graduate placements and international jobs. At Mandarin

commitment to building a global comprehensive strategic partnership at a higher level. Cross-cultural communication, exchange and business interaction have been increasing, most notably in education. “Growth” is a term so often associated with China, and in this area it is no different – from the growing number of Chinese students who come to the UK and US to study, the growing range of partnerships between UK, US and Chinese universities, to China’s ambition of significantly growing the R&D base. However, over the next ten years, greater challenges will be faced by Chinese graduates on entering the job market to realise their potential and enter top-tier global companies. Young Chinese are standing at a point in history when their understanding of the West is probably the single most valuable asset they hold compared to young Chinese with no overseas experience. Mandarin Consulting is a company that is well-positioned to seize this moment, and to lead as we always have. I am proud of the Mandarin Consulting team and I am more confident than ever that our best days lie ahead.

Our mission is to change people’s lives!

I begin writing this with a sense of gratitude and pride about

Mandarin Consulting that has only grown stronger over

the course of the last decade, since I founded the company

in 2007. This year, we celebrate our 10th Anniversary, ten

years of service. Ours is an exceptional company with an

extraordinary heritage and an exciting future.

My passion and enthusiasm for cross-cultural career

coaching continues to grow stronger every day. I have

the good fortune to be a pioneer in an industry at the

time when China is growing rapidly and the global

demand for UK/US educated Chinese graduates to

be transformed into global citizens and life-long

learners is increasing. We have always challenged

the status quo and companies need to attract the

right people, with the right skills and experience

to help them achieve good governance and

performance for their future sustainability.

Our Coaches Say...

A key message I give to my candidates is the importance of selling yourself in the job recruitment process and identifying your selling points; all my candidates therefore appreciate their multi-cultural and linguistic skills and leverage this global mindset to sell themselves to potential employers.

Sally PattersonSenior Coach ”

I love coaching candidates on the practical skills to answer questions and also on the more subtle things like confidence and motivation.

One candidate did not know what career she wanted and was ‘down in the dumps’ and demotivated. Within a few coaching sessions, she knew exactly what she wanted to do and was raring to go again. That is so rewarding.

Without Sally’s encouragement and belief, I would not have imagined that I could get the offer from one of the top employers in the world. Sally’s encouragement and persistence have taught me that I am who I am, and to get to the top, it’s all down to me. I am capable, but it will take hard work and lots of dedication.”

Expert Panel Discussion HighlightsSetting the sceneRelations between China and the UK have never been better with a shared commitment to building a global comprehensive strategic partnership at a higher level. Cross-cultural communication, exchange and business interaction have been increasing, most notably in education. “Growth” is a term so often associated with China and in this area it is no different – from the growing number of Chinese students who come to the UK to study, the growing range of partnerships between UK and Chinese universities, to China’s ambition of significantly growing the R&D base. However, over the next ten years, greater challenges will be faced by Chinese graduates on entering the job market to realise their potential and enter top-tier global companies.

Objectives of the discussionThe purpose of this high-level panel discussion was to gain insights into the challenges facing Chinese graduates in the UK and the need for their transformation into global citizens and life-long learners. Companies need to attract the right people, with the right skills and experience, to help them achieve good governance and performance for their future sustainability.

Mark Patterson is a Non-Executive Director and Senior Adviser to a number of internationally focused enterprises. Formerly at Standard Chartered, ANZ Investment Bank and Deutsche Bank.

Brian Renwick joined Mandarin Consulting after nine years as Head of HR at HSBC and 20 years in management consulting. Brian began a career in management by undertaking one of the very first full-time post-graduate programmes in Human Resource Management. Now, he is Head Coach and Head of Programme Management at Mandarin Consulting.

Patrick Reid is a Consultant and Coach, and External Supervisor and academic with the University of Manchester, University of Warwick and Robert Kennedy College. He was formerly a director with AstraZeneca, with some 20 years’ experience spanning IT, Marketing and eBusiness. He is now a coach for Mandarin Consulting.

David Peckham graduated with an engineering degree from Imperial College London. After working as an engineer for several years, he spent 19 years with the top management consultancy firms Price Waterhouse (now PwC) and PA Consulting Group. He then established himself as an independent consultant. Now, he is Director of Mandarin Consulting.

Carrie Waley, CEO and founder of Mandarin Consulting. Formerly worked for many years in Hong Kong in a variety of industries including hospitality, public relations and media.

On the dayThis event, held on 26 April 2017, was hosted by the University of Manchester Careers Service and opened by International Career Consultant Noeleen Hammond-Jones. She thanked other partner universities in the region for promoting the event including Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Salford, University of Liverpool and Lancaster University. The audience consisted of over 100 mainly Chinese international students from the surrounding area, all eager to learn from the panel and gain insight into what opportunities await them in their future career.

within their lifetime. Furthermore, due to the automation of many industries and continued globalisation around the world, roles themselves are shifting in favour of client-facing roles within multi- cultural environments. As China’s economy matures, future trends in the technology, finance and health sectors, also due to the ageing population, will dramatically increase the need for internationally aware, multilingual Chinese professionals in the tertiary services industry.

Highlighted key issues

· Economic Development in ChinaAs the Chinese economy transforms from one of manufacturing to one of professional services, such as banking, accounting and legal services, the experience that Chinese students can gain from the UK, a country with a long record of delivering world-class professional services, will be invaluable to China’s economy overall, as well as to the graduates returning to put their skills to good use.

“ Don’t look for problems, look for opportunities!Carrie Waley ”· Global Market Trends

In contrast to that of previous years, this generation of workers will have multiple careers. Due to the increase in life expectancy (half of all current graduates will live to be 100 years old) people are having more than one career

There is no such thing as a long-term career anymore; people are now having three or four careers by moving round different jobs and functions.Brian Renwick

“”· Skills

In an ever-globalising world, the four key skill areas are even more essential for new graduates to demonstrate: Communication skills, team work, problem solving and commercial awareness. Academic ability is important but if somebody cannot work effectively in a team, they are of little use to an employer. Graduates today must be able to demonstrate critical analysis, mental agility and respect for others’ views and be able to effectively communicate their opinion in an appropriate manner.

You must know yourself and you must be honest with yourself and what you want.Patrick Reid

· Uncertain PoliticsBritain’s businesses are facing uncertainty due to Brexit negotiations. However, this will not stop the market’s need for the best talent available regardless from which country it originates. Despite President Trump’s calls for protectionism and inward looking politics, globalisation will not cease to continue around the world and businesses will be increasing their interaction with China on a huge scale in the years to come. Britain will be forging these new relationships with China outside Europe and will need very talented, bright young students who understand both countries and cultures to work in business. Brexit could, ultimately, be very good news for Chinese international students over the coming years.

I believe that Chinese students are going to have greater opportunities after Brexit.David Peckham

Q&AQ: I study engineering but I want to go into finance. How do I compete with someone who has studied banking and finance at university?

A: It doesn’t matter what subject you study!

Q: What is the most common question at interview?

A: Tell me about yourself.

Q: What is the best way of finding out about internships?

A: Proper research and knowing where to look (Fame Database).

Q: The cost of a Tier 2 visa application is high – why would companies pay that for a fresh graduate with no experience?

A: Companies are looking for future leaders of their organisations. This initial investment in you will pay off in the years to come.

Event summary

As China rises, its young generation of educated bilingual graduates, who have knowledge of the West and have acquired the skills necessary for a developed economy focusing on professional services, have unprecedented opportunities awaiting them as they enter the global workforce.

Ties between the UK, US and China are re-establishing themselves and in doing so forging a future path of closer inter-dependence and deepening links.

Chinese graduates must make the most of their experience in the UK, not just by taking advantage of the resources that British universities have to offer but also by taking the time to understand the culture within British society and business that will make them particularly attractive to prospective employers.
