The term mandala comes from Sanskrit meaning "circle." Even though it may be dominated bysquares or triangles, a mandala has a concentric structure. Thedesign is said to absorb the mind in such a way that chatteringthoughts cease, and a spiritual essence envelopes the observer.Want to put this theory to a test? Join us for this experiment.

About the Embroidery DesignsG You will receive two embroidery designs.G One will fit a 6" square hoop (150mm x 150mm). G One will fit an 8" square hoop (200mm x 200mm).

Embroidery Hoop• Use a hoop 150mm wide (6") or wider. • A 6" square hoop or 8" square hoop would work well.

Fabric Type• Linen, Linen/cotton blend, Linen/Rayon blend• Plain weave home decor fabric.• Batiks that won’t detract from the embroidery design.

Fabric Cut Size• If using a 6" wide hoop, cut fabric 12" wide and high enough to be securely hooped.• If using a 6" square hoop, cut fabric 12" square.------------------------------• If using a 7" wide hoop, cut fabric 14" wide and high enough to be securely hooped.------------------------------• If using an 8" wide hoop, cut fabric 16" wide and high enough to be securely hooped.• If using an 8" square hoop, cut fabric 16" square. ------------------------------• If using a larger hoop, cut a piece of fabric large enough to be securely hooped.

Fusible Cutaway Stabilizer• Floriani Fusible No Show Mesh Stabilizer. • Cut the stabilizer the same size as the fabric. • If your cut fabric is wider than 12", you will need a larger format of the stabilizer (15" or

20").

Needles• Recommended: 90/14 embroidery needle or 80/12 microtex needle.

Embroidery Thread• This design is best done without too many color changes.• Three to four color changes are suggested.• The graphics below suggest some possible color combinations.

Bobbin ThreadG White bobbin thread, unless you’ve decided to use a dark fabric. G Then use black bobbin thread.

Tools and NotionsG Standard Sewing Tools: pins, scissors & thread snips, seam ripper, screw

driver for changing needles, etc.G Rotary ruler & rotary cutter.G Heat removable fabric marker such as the FriXion Erasable Gel Pens.

Framing and Display Devices, Optional

During class time, I will demonstrate how to frame the finished Mandala in a round wood handembroidery hoop. If you have an opportunity, you can purchase a wooden hoop before class.This is optional.

Round Wood Hand Embroidery Hoops

What Size?• The size of the round wood hoop you will need depends upon the size of your Mandala.• If you embroidered a six inch mandala design, you will need a six inch wood embroidery

hoop.• If you embroidered the eight inch mandala design, you will need an eight inch wood

embroidery hoop.

Where to Purchase• Where you purchase the round wood hoop depends upon the size and the

desired quality of the hoop.• A six inch round wood hoop can be purchased at Joann Fabrics or Hobby

Lobby.• An eight inch round wood hoop can be purchased on line at amazon.com.• If you want a higher quality round wooden hoop or a deeper wooden hoop

Ornament Hanger Stand• Although you can hang the embroidery hoop on the wall, you can also

display it on an ornament hanger stand.• If you create a eight inch mandala, you will need an ornament stand that is

13 inches high.• If you create a six inch mandala, you will need an ornament stand that is

approximately 9 inches high.• The shorter ornament stands should be available at Hobby Lobby.• The taller stands are available on amazon.com
