By Guy Ealey
This is a young man I have known all his life. I can write this article even without actually interviewing him, but I will give him the courtesy of at least editing the first draft.
So, here goes: While we lived in Central California, I ran a couple years on a relay team that raced 72 miles around Lake Tahoe. Each runner ran about 10 miles. When Jeff was 14, after recovering from pneumonia, he joined our team effort by riding his bike along over the whole 72 mile distance
Jeff ran track and cross country during his junior and senior years at The Dalles High School in The Dalles, OR. His coach arranged for him to receive a trophy for “most improved runner” for his senior year. Jeff still communicates with his high school coach, Bob Touvenal, each year at Christmas. His fastest mile was 4:31 and fastest 5k was 17:06. After high school, Jeff spent a few years growing up. My life had moved on to Spokane , WA, while Jeff spent some time in Ohio and later settled in at Ketchum, ID (Sun Valley), married and started a family. His son, Nathan, Ealey is now about 30. Nathan has a son, Gunnar, 18 months. That’s right, all that makes me a great grandfather, and Jeff a grandfather.
When Jeff was about 26, he felt like he was putting on extra weight. That got him running again. For about 25 years, Jeff did his running and biking in the Wood
River Valley and in the mountains north of Ketchum, ID on up toward Stanley, ID in the Sawtooth Mountain Range. While living in Idaho, Jeff participated on a relay team each year that ran from Sun Valley to Stanley and back. Each runner ran two legs, each ap-proximately six miles in length, one up hill, the other down hill.
The bulk of his miles were run at or above 6,000 feet in elevation. In addition to running, Jeff put a lot of miles on his bike. When Nancy and Tom Flanagan initiated the “1,000 mile summer” here in Sarasota, Jeff wanted to be a part of it, so he recorded his miles and reported each month to Nancy. At the end of the summer, on Labor Day, Jeff

HAPPY NEW YEAR!Yep, another year has flown by. I’ve been
busy prepping for our annual banquet so I’ve had the opportunity to go through photos from the past year. I think some of my favorite images are from Bill’s Beer Run - especially the shots from the pub runs. The no pressure, no time-clock events were just plain fun. Everyone had a great time hanging out after the runs. I love the social aspect of our club.
We have lots of events planned this month. Kicking off our 2016 MTC/New Balance Rac-ing series is the Ringling Bridge run on January 16th. Let’s hope some cooler weather moves in. I’m sick of the summer humidity and warm temps. It’s the time of year when we expect to break out the long sleeves. Enough already!
Our annual banquet is Saturday, January 23rd. We’ll be back at the Francis in downtown Sarasota. I hope you can join us in celebrating our 2015 achievements. It’s also a celebration of our 40th year, so if you feel like dressing up with a bit of a 70s flair - Do It. I’ve got my retro kicks ready to roll! We will be honoring some very special members with awards and voting in
the 2016 MTC Board of Directors. It will be a great evening with our running family. RSVPs for the event close on January 10th, so be sure to reserve your spot if you haven’t done so already. (The price is $45 per person and you can sign up online at www.imathlete.com/events/mtcbanquet16)
A new event in the 2016 MTC/New Balance Racing series is the Suncoast Half Marathon. It’s on Sunday, January 24th. So if you’re at the banquet, and you are run-ning the Half and you don’t want your drink tickets … I’m sure I can help you out with that ;) Next year, I promise make sure these two events are not back to back.
And finally one more January race. On Sat-urday the 30th, it’s the Achieva Run for Good. I
had such a good time at this event last year. The 5k course goes in and around Payne Park. There’s a kids’ race and a dog walk/run as well. I’ve got my little chihuahua Moka in training for this one!
Here’s to a happy and healthy 2016. See ya at the [email protected]

had compiled more than 3,000 miles and was second high-est of the group. The highest mileage had been recorded by a friend of Tom and Barbie Treend, living in Wisconsin. I think that Tom Treend was the high mileage rider for the “1,000 Mile Summer the next year, with Jeff again second.Jeff continued to record those high miles until he left Idaho and moved to Sara-sota three years ago. In 2011, before moving to Sarasota, Jeff ran the 50k at Oscar Scherer State Park,(Bob Parnes’ and Dave Siegwald’s MTC Ultra) in 5:02.
After moving to Sarasota, joining the Manasota Track Club, and becoming a member of Team New Balance, running be-came a more focused activity for Jeff. HIs times have improved dramatically during the past five years, despite having moved to the top end of the 50-54 age group. He is still setting lofty goals for himself. He just last week texted to me that he had logged 2015 miles running during the calendar year 2015. That means he averaged more than 5.5 miles each day, despite hav-ing lost some time due to minor running related injuries.
Another accomplishment, Jeff has run in more than 100, Mr. Beery’s Wednesday evening 5k’s.
I think the stiff age group competition here has been signifi-cant to Jeff’s development as a runner, and the weekly friendly competition of the Mr. Beery’s 5k’s has been a good training venue.
Biking is still a part of Jeff’s regular activities, but a busy work schedule, and the stronger focus on running means that the bike miles are not what they used to be. We’ll see how he makes out when the race series points are tallied for the Janu-ary 2016 MTC awards banquet! See you all there!

300 runners showed up on Thanksgiving morn-ing bearing toys and goodies and hoping to win one of the elusive pies. After a cup of coffee and some socializing, they began their hunt and their 2.75 -mile journey in Twin lakes Park. They walked, they ran, they strolled. The four-legged ones might even have barked a couple of times. At the finish line we waited and watched as they circled the park while the clock was counting down to zero. With 3 seconds showing, Vanessa caropepe – Pedrero crossed the finish line, but wait, she was too fast. Doc Wiley was three seconds behind her and crossed the line at exactly zero, claiming first place. He didn’t hesitate when he claimed his 1st place prize - a Yoder’s cherry pie. but don’t feel sorry for Vanessa, she didn’t look too sad when she chose the peanut-butter chocolate pie as her second place prize.
Then it was time for the drawing for the other 4 pies. The runners had all been given a playing card when they were on the course. The 3 of spades was drawn from a new deck by the pie-giver. Seven run-ners came forward with the lucky card. They were all asked to choose another card from the new deck. Yikes! Three of them chose an ace and won those three pies. The lucky aces were Jack knuese, Fran Hargkinson, and braeden Allen.
The last pie was still waiting to be captured. All military veterans were asked to come up to the pie table and pick a card from the deck. Walter White looked at the Jack he had drawn and thought he had a winner. but alas, the pie-giver switched courses when he announced that the last pie was going to the vet with the lowest card! Steve kreidler produced it and the last pie surrendered.
After a few more door prizes were given away and a lot of food was eaten, the generous toy-giving runners headed home, bearing smiles.
Thanks to the great volunteers: bob Parnes, George Dubro, Jolley Siegwald, cecilia Jeldres, Tom Flanagan, nancy Flanagan, and Dick Pfaff.

rate the racesBy Terry Deshaies
I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].
sHiPyard 5k aNd HaLf MaratHoN: This was the last race of the ARC Racing Series. They had a 5k racing series and a progressive racing series which included a 5k, 10k, 15k and half marathon. We opted for the 5k series and all the races took place in the Clearwater area. This race took place in the big city of Ozona, Fl. and the key to this race is know-ing where to park. From past experience, we have a super-secret parking spot just a few feet from the starting are and I won’t tell anyone else except you!!☺
The half marathoners start first then 5 minutes later the 5ker’s go off. This a pretty flat course with a lot of small down-hill’s and just a few uphill’s, but there were more uphill’s than I had remembered from past years…I guess I can’t remember everything!! ☺ The course was once again a little long at 3.15 miles, but being the same course, it’s all apples to apples!! They had water stops out on the course and at the finishing line.
The awards were beer mugs with the Shipyard logo on them…bigger mugs for the Overall winners and smaller mugs for the Masters and top 3 in each age group. For doing racing series we received a nice finisher’s medal listing all the previ-ous races!
The post race party was excellent!! They had chicken with black beans and rice. apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, Lays potato chips, bagels, whole banana’s ☺ Poweraide, soda’s, coffee and a Seadog Brewing Company Beer Truck!!! With some of the best beer I have ever tasted. Seadog Blueberry and the Seadog Apricot-Grapefruit are both among my new favorite beers of all time!!
I give the Shipyard 5k and half marathon: 9.90 out of 10, I took off 0.1 for the course length , but the everything else was excellent…talk about the hair of the Seadog that bit you ☺
MtC tHaNksgiviNg day Pie ruN: This race has been my Thanksgiving Day tradition now for the past 5 years and as long as the track club has it I will be going. What a great way to start off turkey day by getting in about a 3 mile run and not feeling so guilty when I stuff myself later! ☺ The course changed this year to keep it on the Twin Lakes property and this, in my opinion, was way better. We did the course twice so we got to greet all the participants a couple of times during the race!!
For those of you who have never done this let me explain how it works. First you bring and a new toy to go to charity and this is your entry fee. Second, you bring a dish to pass, which seems more and more turning towards sweets…cookies, doughnuts and muffins!! Third you have one hour to complete the course and you don’t know exactly how long the course is!
The clock starts counting backwards from 1:00:00 and the
person that crosses the finish line closest to 00:00 without going over gets a pie!! But it’s not as sim-ple as it sounds!! First off, no watches, cell phones or anything that can track your time is allowed…I’ve even seen them cracking down on sundials! ☺ If you are caught you will be disqualified and trust me there are people out on that course watching for people to cheat and can’t wait to nark them out!! Not that I would know anyone like that, but I’ve heard rumors!! ☺ They also hand out playing cards out on the course, during the run, to give you a 2nd, 3rd and 4th chance of winning a pie. Con-grats to Doc Wiley for coming in right on 00:00!!
That cagey veteran!! ☺Then it’s off to the parking lot for a little pre-Thanksgiving
cheer to celebrate what we are thankful for and this year we were thankful for Seadog Beer!! ☺
frosty 5k: Boy is this race named right. I don’t know how Miss Karen did it. but the race time temps were 48 degrees!! We were all praying for global warning!! ☺ This race take place at Twin Lakes park and is always the morning after the Jingle 5k and makes it tough for those of us that enjoy a good post race party!!
The course was the same as it has been for the past several years. Running around the Twin Lakes area then finishing up with a nice run around one of the lakes to the finish. There was water out on the course and they had water at the finish. The course was marked a bit long at 3.15 according to my Garmin!!
The awards were custom mugs for the Overalls and Mas-ters and 1st thru 3rd in each age group got a porcelain snow flake ornament.
The post race party was excellent. They had Geckos Chili, PDQ chicken tenders, popcorn from Tropical Popcorn, Ein-stein’s and bagels with peanut butter, Nutella, cream cheese and jelly toppings, Publix pastries, Food Should Taste Good tortilla chips, Marley One Drop coffee drink, coke, diet coke and beer provided by World of Beer and what a selection, Stella Cider, Root Beer Beer, Trapeze Monk from Big Top Brew-ery’s and Mich. Ultra!!
I give the Frosty 5k a 9.95 out of 10, the course length was the only thing wrong at this very Frosty race, but it heated up nicely for the post race party!! Then Terry took a long winters nap!! ☺
tHe QuiCk 1,2,3 oN uPCoMiNg raCes:Andrew Monroe 5k: Takes Place at Siesta Beach, never done
it so I need to check this one outRingling Bridge Run 4 miller: Takes place at Van Wezel, our
