  • 1. MANAGING YOUR ONLINE RESOURCES Using EndNote7 With WSU Library DatabasesMay 2004

2. Using EndNote7 With WSU Library Databases 3. What Can EndNote7 Do For Me? EndNote7 is a citation manager, or bibliographic database manager You can enter bibliographic data for a variety of media (books, articles, URLs, electronic resources, etc.) then sort the references and create bibliographies in different output styles such as MLA or APA Share EndNote7 libraries with colleagues 4. EndNote7 Overview (Contd) From your EndNote7 library you can select references to insert into Word or WordPerfect manuscripts, and EndNote7 will create the bibliography at the end of the paper automatically (Cite While You Write) Use predefined MS Word manuscript templates Build your EndNote7 library by importing records from the WSU Griffin online catalog or the online indexes & abstracts (subscription databases) Find references in your EndNote7 libraries with its built-in search engine 5. Thomson ISI ResearchSoft EndNote7 is one of three bibliographic citation managers produced by Thomson ISI ResearchSoft (http://www.isiresearchsoft.com/) The others are ProCite version 5 and Reference Manager version 11 Thomson ISI also runs the ISI Web of Knowledge (Science Citation Index etc.) and recently acquired BIOSIS 6. Comparisons of their 3 Products A chart produced by Thomson ISI Researchsoft, at: http://thomsonisiresearchsoft.com/compare/ A spreadsheet from the University of Oregon Libraries, at: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/guides/bibsoftware/feat ures.html A chart from the UCLA Biomed Library, at: http://unitproj.library.ucla.edu/biomed/bibsoftware /bibcompare.cfm 7. Comparisons (Contd) A webpage from Purdue University, at: http://www.lib.purdue.edu/intranet_new/uit/inst/ci tation_managers/choose.html The website of Francesco DellOrso, where he has published the 8th edition (Nov. 17, 2003) of Bibliography Formatting Software: an Evaluation Template, at: http://www.burioni.it/forum/ors- bfs/text/index.html 8. Comparisons (Contd) All 3 cost between $300-350, with CD-ROM and manual; there is no faculty discount, but the student editions are about $100. Reference Manager v.11 lacks a MacIntosh version, but works the best in a (Windows) networked systems environment EndNote7 has the most output styles and handles images (one per record) and the placement of figures & tables ProCite v.5 has the most predefined reference types and allows more data fields per record ProCite v.5 offers no spell check function 9. This EndNote7 screen lets you open an existing or new library 10. Weve started EndNote7 and opened thePaleo.enl sample library 11. A Library Window displays all 200 paleontology references sorted by year 12. You can sort by any of the columns; herewe have clicked on the author column 13. Select and highlight the Babcockreference; then double-click it 14. The Babcock reference is an EndNote7Reference Type of Journal Article 15. There is a pulldown menu of 26 Reference Types, to select from beforemanually entering data 16. Here is a different view of the Babcock article, showing in a preview pane at the bottom 17. The preview pane shows the article citation in any one of over 1000 output styles that come with EndNote7 18. Now we are looking at the Babcock citation inthe Journal of Geology output style 19. The Style Manager is for storingand editing output styles 20. There are several ways to get referencesinto our new library without manuallytyping them: Using connection files to search WSU Library databases from within EndNote7s own search engine Directly exporting references from WSU Library databases into an EndNote7 library Searching WSU Library databases, saving the results as .txt files, then using EndNote7 filters to import references into our library 21. Connection File Method Connection files use the Z39.50 standard protocol to connect to library catalogs and other bibliographic databases Each connection file is designed for a particular database from a single information service provider (i.e. OCLC) They may be customized with such items as usernames, passwords for a university New connection files may be downloaded from endnote.com Connection files search with EndNote7s own (comparatively limited) search engine 22. Databases which work OK withthe Connection File Method Agricola WorldCAT CAB Abstracts GeoRef Biosis Zoological Record Griffin online catalog Web of Science 23. The Connection Manager lets you store and edit connection files 24. This is the first screen of the connection file for Agricola (OCLC) 25. If we select connection settingsthis screen becomes available 26. Customize with server address, port ID, user ID, and password 27. This shows the connection file settings for the Griffin online catalog 28. Connection File Method View Demonstration 29. Direct Export Method Many online database vendors, such as OCLC FirstSearch, ProQuest, or the ISI Web of Science, provide for a direct export of references into EndNote7 This method does away with the need to save references to a text file and then import that file with an import filter; all you need do is choose the EndNote Library into which the data should be imported 30. Direct Export MethodView Demonstration 31. Import Filter Method Filters are specific to both the bibliographic database and information provider (e.g. SilverPlatter) which they were designed for Filters map the data in resultant references into the proper data fields within EndNote7 Reference Types and libraries New filters may be downloaded from endnote.com Filters may be created, modified, customized and shared 32. The Filter Manager is for storing and editing import filters 33. The import filter for Agricola 34. The import filter for the CABdatabase from SilverPlatter 35. A Word of Caution: Copyrightand Fair Use Policies NOTICE REGARDING LEGAL USE OF DOWNLOADED REFERENCE DATA EndNote gives you the capability to import references from online databases and store them in your personal EndNote libraries. Some producers of online reference databases expressly prohibit such use and storage of their data, others charge an extra fee for a license to use the data in this way. Before you download references from a database, be sure to carefully check the copyright and fair use notices for the database. Note that different databases from the same provider may have varying restrictions. 49.
