How Do YOU Manage Your Time?

2. What do you feel are common causes of distraction for you as a trainee teacher?
3. Could you outline your routine or system that you use to help you manage your time?
1440 Minutes/Four Parts
What you have to do. What you choose to do. What you want to do. What you end up doing.
The Three Time Zones
As a trainee teacher, you need to manage
three time zones:
Zone 1. Structured Time Zone 2. Unstructured Time Zone 3. Your Personal Life
Transition from Zone 2 – Zone 3
Consider the following question, discuss
in pairs:
When and where does work stop and
personal life begin?
How much to do in Zone 2
1. How much do you do?
Make some time to plan your day.
2. How well do you do it?
Break it down into chunks of time.
The Pareto Principle or the 80-20 Rule 20% of your tasks produce 80% of your
results. 20% of a meeting gives you 80% of the
information. 20% of your contribution produces 80%
of the recognition you get. 20% of the clothes in your wardrobe are
worn 80% of the time!
Top Tips for Trainee Teachers
USE ‘TO DO’ LISTS:
Diary/Notebook/Planner. The night before. Prioritise. ABC Method. How long will it take? Build in slack time.
Top Tips for Trainee Teachers One minute of teaching = one minute of
planning. Use resources that will save you time. Build up your physical resilience; you
need to be fit and healthy if you are a teacher.
Experienced teachers are a wonderful resource!
Accept that you cannot do everything!
Top Tips for Trainee Teachers Learn when to say “No”! Separate work time and personal time. Mutual moaning = great therapy! Commit to some social events!
Know When To Be ‘Unperfect’ Choose carefully what you give 100% to. How to know when good is good enough. Ready-Fire-Aim. Embrace your mistakes.
‘The man who never made a mistake never made anything’.
