10 Rules for Managing Up

Help your boss make a decision.Do your homework, build a business case and make it easy for your boss to say, “Yes.”

Maximize time.If you can handle it, do.Synthesize and summarize results.

Only ask for an opinion when you want one.If you’re looking for buy-in, not opinion, ask for buy-in.

Remember, information is not just data.You are paid to have an opinion, to draw conclusions, to think.Bring viable solutions to the table.

Develop the reputation of a problem-solver.Develop operating agreements with your boss on how problems will be addressed so you know when to recommend, inform or handle issues.

Don’t assume your boss knows what you know.You are the expert in your area. Harness and grow that expertise.Know your limits.

Be careful not to overstep your bounds.Know your roles and responsibilities. There is such a thing as too much initiative.

Manage the style differences.Flex your communication style.

Build trust.Be your boss’s partner, ally and advocate.If you have a problem with your boss, take it up with him or her.

Do not promise what you cannot deliver.Manage expectations.Adopt a ‘no surprises’ policy.
