Fertilizer

• Soil and Leaf Samples (Waters Lab)• Split applications of broadcast fertilizer (Early

April and Early August)• Lime accordingly• Liquid injections three times during the

season • Typically 20 units of 24% three times per acre

Irrigation

• I prefer MicroJet over Omitters• We have 20 irrigation wells (No more than two

zones per well)• All systems do between 3500 to 6000 gallons per

acre per day• Timing of Irrigation (Don’t water all you have early

on) • Typically start with 50% of maximum capacity• CHECK YOUR IRRIGATION REGULARLY

Industry Changes(Hedging)

Page 9: Managing Pecans

Earlier The Better

Page 10: Managing Pecans

Benefits of Hedging

• More Trees Per Acre• More Sunlight• Hopefully More Pounds Per Acre• Less Tree Breakage (Stronger Limbs)• In My opinion easier to control pests and

spray Strictly My Opinion• Spacing's of newly planted orchards for

hedging

Page 11: Managing Pecans

Pushing of Young Trees

• Irrigation• Herbicide Strips (Roundup to a minimum)• Liquid Injections ( 3-8-12 plus minors)• Spray Regularly for micronutrients, pests, and

diseases (corron, sulfur, nickel plus, soar, zinc, and borron)

• Pruning establishing a central leader• Spread Fertilizer as well• Apply Zinc by hand
