DL NW closer to one DELTA Air Lines and NorthwestAirlines were given approval by theUS Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) to operate under a commoncertificate on New Year’s Eve, amove that brings the carrierscloser to becoming one entity. Delta executive vice presidentSteve Gorman said the green lightmeans employees from bothairlines can work together “withthe same manuals, organisationalstructure and oversight. “Among other things, it alsomeans that for the first time, premerger Northwest operationswill be combined into Delta’soperations,” he said. The FAA now recognises Deltaand Northwest by a single carriercode and allows them to combineoperations, some 14 months afterthe deal was struck. The authorisation will alsopermit DL and NW pilots to sharea single cockpit, and interchangeplane routes and schedules. MEANWHILE, Delta has begunphasing out the NW flight code ona number of codeshare partnerflights, including Air France, KLMand Malev on 03 Jan; AlaskaAirlines/Horizon Air and AmericanEagle on 31 Jan; and HawaiianAirlines & Korean Air from 01 Feb.

Hargrave hiccup QANTAS’ brand new superjumbodubbed Lawerence Hargrave, which was only handed over twoweeks ago (TD 21 Dec), hasexperienced its first fault. 443 passengers aboard the flightfrom Melbourne to Los Angeleshad their travel plans thrown intochaos yesterday after the newAirbus A380 could not depart asscheduled due to a faulty gauge. The flight was due to depart atnoon on Mon, but the mechanicalsituation held up the Qantas paxinitially for 1.5hrs, and then afurther 4 hours when the sameproblem reoccured while taxiing. QF93 was postponed until 11amtoday, with passengers offeredovernight accomodation and freetransport to and from the airport. A Qantas spokesman said theflight delay caused by a “fuelindication defect” would haveresulted in the pilot and crewexceeding their operating hours.

FAA watcing AA THE US aviation watchdog hassaid it will be closely monitoringAmerican Airlines following threeserious incidents inside 11 days. The FAA is lifting its scrutiny ofAA’s operations following the 22Dec incident involving one of itsBoeing 737s overshooting therunway in Jamaica (TD 24 Dec),and a MD-82s damaged wingtipthat resulted on 13 Dec when thejet’s main landing gear veered offa runway in Charlotte, NC. In the latest run of bad luck forAA, on Christmas Eve an MD-80landing at Austin, Texas had itswingtip scrape the ground.

VTIC calls for govt action THE Victoria Tourism IndustryCouncil says that the state’stourism industry and economy willsuffer if prompt action is taken tomake Victorian streets safer. The call comes after Indian-based media began runningnegative stories about Victoriafollowing the stabbing death of anIndian national last weekend, and

claims the Indian govt is lookingat placing a travel advisory aboutsafety in the state. VTIC chairman Jermey Johnsonsaid, “these attacks are randomand senseless...which is particularlyfrightening for internationalguests who are in Victoria towork, study or tour.” The council says India is a keymarket for overseas students andtourism, showing a close to a 40%growth in visitor numbers for thetwelve-months to Sep 2009. “A diminished Indian touristmarket would greatly impact onVictorian accommodation, tourand attraction providers,” he said. Johnson said a delayed responseby the government could harm thestate’s appeal to host major eventsand conventions and impact onthe appeal of further direct flightsto Melbourne by airlines. The VTIC head says the “latestattacks show the urgency of anincreased police presence, tougher sentencing and improvedsafety measures... if we hope toavoid being slapped with travelwarnings from intl goverments.”

NSW tourism growth TOURISM operators across NSWare expected to prosper in Janafter early trends indicated a riseof up to 10% in the number ofsummer holiday bookings. According to NSW Government’sMinister for Tourism, Jodi McKay,more people are travelling thissummer season than last year torecover from “what has been atough year.” McKay said late last month, “It’sno secret 2009 has been a difficulttime for tourism operators acrossthe State, however we are headinginto typically the strongest monthfor domestic tourism.” She said figures from Jan 2008showed that domestic holidaymakers boosted the State’seconomy by $1.4 billion. And domestic travellers are notjust limiting themselves to theNSW capital either, with McKaysaying regional centres are alsoexpecting a boost in visitors. Chairman for the TourismIndustry Council of NSW, KenCorbett said the govt’s report wasencouraging for the industry. “Bookings over summer arelooking great for the coastal areasfrom the Tweed to Eden,” he said.

SOME people would do anythingto go on a holiday. A penniless Indian manrecently staged his ownkidnapping to fund a trip toMacau to fulfil his girlfriendsNew Year’s wish. Unluckily, the 22 year old wascaught red-handed at a newDelhi shopping mall whilst onhis way to collect the $45,000ransom demanded from his dad. Rather than celebrating NewYear’s Eve under the lights ofthe Chinese gambling resort, the man’s poor attempt landedhim in jail instead.

WHERE’s the sense in this? Whilst the UK experiencesone of the coldest winters inyears, over 300 couples areplanning to slip away to a hotelcompletely made of ice. The Ice Hotel in the Fagarasmountains, Romania has receivedan overwhelming number ofbookings from British couples. A stay at the luxury propertymade from giant blocks of ice isquite a novelty, with guestssleeping on ice beds and eatingfrom deep frozen plates. “I guess ice isn’t as much funif you’re trying to scrape itfrom your car windscreen to getto work,” said a hotel spokesman.

It’s time for b-b-b-bed.
