Management Skillsfor International Business
Enhance your cross-cultural managementskills
The qualities that make a manager successful
in one culture may be the very reasons for
failure when leading across cultures. And today,
most organisations operate internationally.
Even executives based in their home country
find themselves managing teams, suppliers,
partners or customers in others. To add to
the challenge, twenty-first century teams
are increasingly likely to be multicultural.
Traditional management training is no longersufficient to develop the skills that business
leaders require.
Fortunately, INSEADs Management Skills
for International Business programme,
is there to help. Over five learning-packed
days, it provides the cross-cultural leadership
competence that has become essential for
businesses and managers to succeed in todays
global business landscape.
Building on INSEADs distinctively internationalresearch reputation and teaching expertise,
Management Skills for International
Business is constructed around three proven
pillars of success:
Understanding global organisations
Global leadership expertise
Cross-cultural management techniques.

working abroad for the first time, whether you
are opening an overseas office or off-shoring
operations, whether your challenges are with
your team or your customers... we offer you a
multicultural classroom in which to gain new
perspectives and expertise.
Together, you will not only learn whatdifferentiates an exceptional international
leader from an exceptional national one, but
also develop the skills to make the transition
for yourself. The programme is your passport to
global leadership.

Programme content
Management Skills for International
Businessdemands active involvement in the
uniquely multicultural environment that is
created over five days on campus. A typical
half-day session might use a short case study,
an exercise, role play and a series of short
lectures or videos as catalysts for discussionand learning. The content is based on INSEADs
world-leading research in the field of global
leadership much of it carried out by the
programme faculty themselves.
Understanding global organisations
In these three sessions, led by Jos Santos,
participants will explore the challenges
companies experience when moving from
local to international to global, such as how to
be both locally responsive and internationallyintegrated. Classes will reveal both why and
how companies put in place multidimensional
work structures, including the ever-popular
matrix system and investigate the practical
implications for managers.
Global leadership expertise
In these two sessions, led by Paul Evans and
Paul Saunders, participants will analyse the
differences between the skill sets required for
effective local and global leadership. They will
explore the specific leadership challengesthat come with leading in multidimensional
structures and develop tools to increase their
effectiveness at managing within a matrix or
other complex organisational format.
Cross-cultural management techniques
In these five diverse sessions, led by Erin
Meyer, participants will learn to decode how
culture impacts business effectiveness and thus
develop tools to influence clients, suppliers
and colleagues from a variety of countries.Participants will develop an understanding of
cultural differences, the skills to manage those
differences effectively and the knowledge to
navigate in complex multicultural situations.
In addition, they will explore how the most
effective leaders and companies are learning
to leverage cultural differences as team and
organisational assets with a view to doing so
themselves when they return to work.
Participant profile
The programmes cross-cultural learning
environment is ideal for managers who are
transitioning from national to international
leadership roles or who would like to improve
their ability to lead effectively in a multi-
cultural environment.
Management Skills for International
Businesswill most benefit senior managers
currently (or about to be) posted abroad, as
well as executives based at headquarters
who manage (or are about to manage)
international activities. Participants might be in
charge of international outsourcing activities,
international sales or cross-border M&As.
This programme is also invaluable for
executives in companies that have been
successful nationally and are now movinginto other countries. In addition, it is ideal
for managers in public organisations, or
government agencies with international
activities. Participants come from a wide variety
of functional and national backgrounds.
