Director, Management Career Services

It is my pleasure to share with you a review of Management Career Services’ activities for 2011. Highlights for the year included impressive graduate employment figures for the first alumni of Corporate Residency MBA, reaching the milestone of 10,000 co-op work term successes in the Commerce Co-op program, having Bachelor of Management students begin their optional internships, and accepting the opportunity to provide full career development services to students in the School of Information Management. In addition, Management Career Services celebrated recognition from both Dalhousie University and colleagues in the Canadian career education profession, with the acceptance of two awards, both of which highlight the dedication and innovation of our team. This document is intended to be a brief overview of our activities and statistics. We would be happy to provide more comprehensive information at your request.

Introduction

New Initiatives

myCareer

After significant development work throughout 2010, the myCareer system was successfully launched in

January 2011. This web tool provides many enhanced services to students and employers including:

» Access to co-op, full time, part-time, summer jobs, internships and volunteer positions in one centralized

web space

» On-line appointment scheduling with co-op and career advisors

» Event registration and interview scheduling

» Personalized job posting searches and application document

storage

» Access to career resources

» Self-service options for employers to manage their job postings,

review applications and schedule interviews

School of Business Alumni Mentoring Program » In April 2011, we concluded the pilot year of the SBA Alumni

Mentoring Program with 13 student—alumni matches.

» The positive feedback from both mentors and mentees encouraged further development of the

program

» In the Fall 2011, 41 matches were made. The SBA program is serving as a trial for a larger Dalhousie wide

program

» Plans for Fall 2012 include the integration of the myCareer technology to manage the program data

and facilitate administrative efficiencies

Toronto Corporate Tour (May)

» 51 student participants from the Bachelor of Commerce,

Bachelor of Management and Master of Business

Administration programs

» 21 companies visited in 3 days including: P&G, Publics

Modem, BMO, Deloitte and RBC

» Mock interviews and elevator pitch feedback conducted

by 17 volunteer employers

» More than 100 attendees at the alumni reception hosted by

AON

Ottawa Federal Government Tour (December)

» 36 student participants from the Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Library & Information

Studies, Master of Resource & Environmental Management and Master of Public Administration

programs

» 16 Federal Government Departments visited in 2 days including: Environment Canada, Library

and Archives Canada, Auditor General and Citizenship Immigration Canada

» 22 alumni and government representatives attended the mock interviews and Alumni Panel

» 75 alumni attended the Ottawa Tour Reception

Super Wednesday (September)

» 11 employer participants from 7 different organizations

» 34 student participants

» 74 interviews conducted: 65 pre-scheduled and 9 wildcard interviews

» 100% of students had interviews; total student interviews increased by close to 10% from 2010

and student no-shows decreased 15%

Tap the Talent (September)

» 16 employer participants from 7 different organizations

» 31 student participants

» 95 interviews conducted: 62 pre-scheduled and 33 wildcard interviews. Total student interviews

increased 24% from 2010

» 94% of students had interviews with 7 students receiving at least 1 job offer

Interview Competition - Scotiabank Sponsored (November)

» Joint 1st place winners from Dalhousie; Daniel Bartek and Michael Parcon

» 8 employer participants from 6 different organizations

» 15 student participants from Dalhousie University

MCS Career Success Workshops (each semester)

» 9 workshops facilitated:-

Cover Letter Success, Winning Resumes, Networking 101, LinkedIn, Job Search, Informational

Interviews, Interview Tips and Tricks, Career Path Assessment and All Inclusive Career Success

2012 Corporate Residency Recruitment Activity

The first cohort of the CR-MBA Program graduated in May.

» 89% secured post-graduation employment; 95% received employment offers by December 2011

» Average annual salary is $67,000

2011 Graduate Employment Data

» 35 students in attendance for the September 9th interview day

» 55 employer participants from 25 different organizations: 48 employers conducted interviews on

campus and 7 employers conducted Skype and/or telephone interviews

» 192 interviews were scheduled: 160 pre-scheduled and 32 ‗first impression‘ interviews

» 22 job offers extended and accepted within a number of days; 5 offers made from first impression

interviews, 3 of these were accepted by the students

» 8 new employers have recruited CR-MBA students this year

» In total, 64 job opportunities have been available for students

» 97% of students secured a job by December 2011

Master of Library & Information Studies (MLIS)

Bachelor of Management Program Optional 8-12 Month Internship

Students in the MLIS program recently became full service clients of Management Career Services. MLIS

students now have access to one-on-one appointments, events and professional development programming.

235 students attended the customized workshops that were offered in the winter and fall semesters,

some of which involved Library Professionals

A total of 50 student advising appointments were conducted

14 MLIS students and 2 MLIS/MPA students participated in the December 2011 Ottawa Federal

Government Tour, which featured a mock interview with a member of the public service, an alumni

panel discussion, networking reception and visits to 6 government departments including the

Library of Parliament and Library and Archives Canada

Master of Resource & Environmental Management (MREM)

During the 2010/11 academic year, Management Career Services provided limited contracted services to

students in the School of Resource and Environmental Studies.

A total of 5 workshops and 2 tutorials were designed specifically for MREM students

6 MREM Students participated in the December 2011 Ottawa Federal Government Tour which

featured a mock interview with a member of the public service, an alumni panel discussion,

networking reception and visits to 6 government departments including Environment Canada,

Natural Resources Canada and Fisheries and Oceans

Internship Location and Salary Averages

2012 Internships Preparation Nine students, representing 4 program majors (Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Public Sector Management,

Leadership and Organizations, and Environment, Sustainability and Society) have been selected to complete

an internship next year.

Ben Valcour had this to say about his internship experience with Irving Shipbuilding, ―I highly recommend the

optional internship. It gives you an opportunity to apply what you‘ve learned in the classroom, gain some work

experience and build a network of professional contacts before you even graduate."

―The internship program at Dal has provided Irving Shipbuilding with a very positive experience. The knowledge,

efficiency and professionalism displayed with our student placement was a tremendous resource for the finance

group in 2011.‖ - Susan Smith, Supervisor, Irving Shipbuilding.

Recognition and Outreach

Celebration of 10,000 Work Term Successes:

20 years after becoming a Bachelor of Commerce Co-op Program,

Dalhousie‘s School of Business celebrated 10,000 co-op work term

successes on November 4th. Faculty, staff, students, employer partners

and alumni gathered in the atrium of the Kenneth C. Rowe Manage-

ment Building to sign the ‗10,000+ Co-op Successes‘ banner and grab a

slice of cake to celebrate the milestone.

MCS Awards:

Management Career Services has been recognized for excellence this year – twice! We are proud winners of

the Canadian Association for Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) Award for Innovation in Student

Engagement and Dalhousie University‘s first annual Healthy Workplace Award.

Day of Service:

On June 2, MCS lead the second annual Day of Service; an outreach effort to give back to the community.

Faculty of Management staff and faculty were engaged in three, day-long projects in HRM at St. Stephen‘s

Elementary School, Spencer House Seniors Centre, and Wee Care Development Centre. Projects included

gardening, yard work, painting and deck maintenance, cleaning and organizing.

Conference and Association Participation:

The Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) held it‘s annual regional professional

development session in Newfoundland in June. Robert Wooden and Lori Bauld presented an outline of our

award winning Career Success Workshop initiative, and Anna Cranston reported on co-op funding programs

across the country. In addition Anna Cranston completed her term as the Chair of CAFCE Atlantic, and

Robert Wooden and Jessica MacKenzie were elected to roles on the executive team.

In the News:

Management Career Services was featured extensively in the Globe and Mail‘s ‘A Primer for Student Job

Hunters‘ article in June, and during a CTV TV Live at Five segment in November on ‗Making a Good

Impression‘.

National Mentoring Program (NMP):

The National Mentoring Program is an innovative semester-long mentorship and leadership-training program

which links students, corporate mentors, and non-profit organizations in a unique partnership. With the support

of our corporate sponsor, Nova Scotia Power/Emera, three students completed summer terms with United

Way, Clean Nova Scotia and Symphony Nova Scotia.

"The NMP was more than a co-op term for me, it was an opportunity to work for an organization who really

needed the help. I finished the summer knowing I had made a difference in our community. Anyone can say

they're a self-starter, but I can prove it. The NMP provided me with more practical and meaningful work

experience than I ever thought possible in 12 weeks.” - Erin Sullivan, Student.

Social Media:

Management Career Services now offers students more ways to stay connected to career development tools

and events. The addition of Twitter, LInkedIn and Blog pages to the already existing Facebook group, allows

MCS to engage students and employers in discussions and information sharing.
