Boom or bust? Analysing the profitability of mortgages Coventry Building Society consulted the School of Management when it wanted to create an effective tool to analyse the profitability of its portfolio of mortgage products.

ProfessorLynThomasbuiltacomputerisedpricingmodelthatcouldtakeaccountofmanyvariablefactorsinthehomeloanmarketindifferenteconomiccircumstances.Simplermodelsalreadyexistbutoftendonotincludecomplexrisksfromdefaults,fallinghousepricesorchangingloantovaluefigures.Therearealsodifferencesintheprofitabilityofbuy-to-letandself-certificationmortgages.

“Mortgagesarelong-livedproducts,oftenlasting25years,andmuchcanhappenoverthelifeoftheloan,”Lynexplains.“Weuseddatafromthelasttenyearsprovidedbythebuildingsociety’sanalyststomakethemodelascomprehensiveaspossible.”

ManagementscientistDrJuliaBennellandMathematicsProfessorChrisPottscontributedtheirexpertisetothethreeyearprojectaspartofaKnowledgeTransferPartnership(KTP).Thisprogrammehelpsbusinessesboosttheircompetitivenessbytappingintouniversityknowledge,technologyandskills.DrNikPearsonwasengagedforthreeyearstoworkdirectlywithLogicalTransportontheproject.

LogicalTransportDirectorofBusinessDevelopmentAlanWillsonsays:“Overthepasttwoyearsourrevenueshaveincreasedbymorethan300percent.OurrelationshipwiththeSchoolsofManagementandMathematicsattheUniversityofSouthamptonhasbeen,andcontinuestobe,asignificantcontributortothissuccess.”

University of Southampton specialists in management science and computer science are jointly working on ways of making the airline industry more efficient.

Theyareexploringhowaircraftengineoverhaulsystemscanbeimprovedtoreducethetimetheseenginesspendinworkshopsaroundtheworld.Thisinvolvesinvestigatingcomplexairlinesupplychainsandschedulingsystems.

TheEngineeringandPhysicalScienceResearchCouncilawardedamajorgrantfortheworktoDouglasMacbeth,ProfessorofPurchasingandSupplyChainManagement,alongwithProfessorNickJenningsandDrAlexRogersfromtheUniversity’sSchoolofElectronicsandComputerScience.TheworkwascarriedoutincollaborationwithRolls-Royce.

“Supplychainsareverycomplex,”saysDouglas.“Businessleadersneedasmuchinformationastheycantounderstandwhatisgoingonsotheycanmakeinformeddecisionsandourjointresearchwillbringnewinsightstotheseissues.”

Computeragentsarebeingusedtoexploredifferentmethodsofcreatingbetterschedulingsolutionsinthiscomplexanddynamicsetting.Thesearecomputersystemswhicharecapableofflexibleautonomousactionindynamicandunpredictablesituations.

Cargill Ocean Transportation, a global shipping agency managing many hundreds of dry bulk carriers, wanted to develop the skills of its staff up to Masters degree level. The School of Management worked closely with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers to devise certificate-level modules which could be delivered on site in Cargill’s offices in Geneva and Singapore. The University of Southampton’s Institute of Maritime Law is also involved in delivering this programme.

Inthenextphase,staffwilltakemodulesselectedbythecompanyfromtheUniversityofSouthampton’sMBAprogrammetoearnaDiploma,somewillthengoontowriteadissertationfortheirMastersdegree.

ScrapstorecollectsunwantedsurplusandwastegoodsfrommanufacturersintheSouthandredistributesthemontoartists,schoolsandsmallbusinesses.Its430membersusethematerialsinworkingwith49,000childrenand5,700adultsinandaroundSouthampton.Anationalorganisation,ScrapstoreisrunlocallybyacommitteeofvolunteerswithprojectworkerBeckyWilliams.

PostgraduatesOscarDemello,RavinderSinghandNanthanatSrisawangwonganalysedtheoperationanditsBusinessPlan,spoketoeveryoneinvolvedandmaderecommendationsonhowitcouldbeimproved.

The Business Development team

Professor Douglas Macbeth An expert in supply chain management, Professor Macbeth came to Southampton from the University of Glasgow. He was founding director of SCMG Ltd, consultants in Supply Chain Management, procurement and logistics, which was spun out of the University of Glasgow after a series of academic research projects. He had nine years experience in industry in operations management roles in electricity supply and consumer durable production before starting his academic career.

Tarsha Jonas Tarsha is Business Development Co-ordinator. She trained as a business systems analyst and has worked in telecoms, data, finance and manufacturing in the UK and South Africa.

Where to find us

By Road

M3 – Exit M3 at junction 14, following signs for Southampton (A33). Follow the A33 into Bassett Avenue and follow map/signs to the Highfield Campus.

M27 (West or East) – Leave M27 at junction 5 (Southampton Airport), and follow maps/signs to the Highfield Campus.

By Rail

Fast trains from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth stop at Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway. Trains from Portsmouth and Bristol/South Wales stop at Southampton Central. The Uni-Link U1C bus service runs from Southampton Central and the U1A service from Southampton Airport Parkway to the University.

By Coach

Southampton Coach Station is at Western Esplanade, in the city centre. The University’s Uni-link buses connect the Highfield Campus and the city centre.

By Air

Southampton International Airport is about 20 minutes from the Southampton Campuses by bus or taxi. There is a full domestic service, as well as flights to mainland Europe and the Channel Islands.
