— Stephen Johnston, Principal Term 1, Week 6 • 8th March 2019

Stepping ForwardThis brings week 6 to a close and we are now well and truly into the school year. Children have all settled into the school and, for new students, Intermediate will now be feeling pretty normal. This is now a good time to be encouraging your children to step forward and have a go at new things. We have multiple sports teams up and running, children are learning musical instruments, Mr Horne is starting rehearsals for the school production, house leaders and school councillors have been elected and library monitors are up and running, as well as Kapa Haka. Ask your child if they stepped forward and had a go at some of these opportunities. If they haven’t stepped forward, encourage them to keep an ear out for new opportunities.

PAT TestingThis year we have moved to PAT testing. This is the first time that we have done this in several years. In the past we relied on e-Astle testing, however we believe that PAT testing now offers us better information. Your child’s teacher will share some of the findings from the PAT testing at the three way conferences, later in the term.

CampSchool camp is rushing towards us. I know that some children will miss out on this because of money. This is a fantastic camp and the parents and children from last year still talk about it. If you are going to find it difficult to pay for this, please see me as soon as possible. If you would like to start paying for this now, please see Sue in the office and she will help you set up and automatic payment system. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

School DonationsWe won’t badger families about the school donation, but I would like you to know how important it is to the running of the school. Funding in New Zealand creates a free education system. The Government provides enough funding for the “Core,” curriculum. They consider camps, trips, events, 1:1 devices to be more than “core,” so we are not funded for these, or for a minimal amount. The donations you provide go a long way towards helping with these additional opportunities.

MathsThis year all teachers have been involved in developing a very different maths programme. Over the next few newsletters, I will start to share how this is different to how maths was taught in the past. The changes we are making are very well researched in New Zealand and overseas. One of the key concepts that we are teaching is a: “Maths Mindset.” This concept come from Jo Boaler’s research about maths and Carol Dweck’s research about “growth mindset”. Both of these people work out of Stanford University, which is a university that is well known for its educational research. You can find lots of information about both Jo and Carol online and I encourage you to have a read.

Trips and EventsEach term we try to have at least one schoolwide trip or event. This term all classes have completed their trips to the Rocky Shore and yesterday we had “Rhythm Interactive,” interactive music experience for our students. We wouldn’t be able to do this without the contributions from whanau, so thank you to all those families that have contributed towards these events. If you haven’t paid for this yet, please do so as soon as possible.
