1 Timothy 2-3

Timothy is left in charge of the church members

in EphesusTimothy was young and Paul writes some advice on how to meet some of the difficulties he faced from some of the prominent members.

Timothy faces challenges with men and women

Qualities of a Bishop“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach:”

1 Timothy 3:2-3

“Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, no a brawler, not covetous;”

“Filthy Lucre”

1 Timothy 3:3 Life and Teachings of Jesus

Filthy lucre is blood money; that which is obtained through theft and robbery. It is that obtained through gambling or the operation of gambling establishments.

Filthy Lucre is that had through sin or sinful operations and that which comes from the handling of liquor, beer, narcotics

Filthy Lucre is also money that comes from bribery, and from exploitation.

“Compromise money is filthy, graft money is unclean, profits and commissions derived from the sale of worthless stocks are contaminated as is money derived from other deceptions, excessive charges, oppression to the poor and compensation which is not fully earned. I feel strongly that men who accept wages or salary and do not give commensurate time, energy, devotion, and service are receiving money that is not clean. Certainly those who deal in the forbidden are recipients of filthy lucre.” –Spencer W. Kimball

Qualities of a Woman“…that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;”1 Timothy 2:9-10

“But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Qualities of a Husband“One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in

subjection with all gravity;”

1 Timothy 3:4-5

“(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?”

Warnings to a Woman

“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection…But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”1 Timothy 2:11-12

“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.” 1 Corinthians 14:34

Should Women keep silent in Church?

‘May women speak in church? Yes, in the sense of teaching, counseling, testifying, exhorting, and the like; no, in the sense of assuming rule over the Church as such, and in attempting to give direction as to how God’s affairs on earth shall be regulated: ‘A woman has no right to found or organize a church—God never sent them to do it.’ Paul is here telling the sisters they are subject to the priesthood, that it is not their province to rule and reign, that the bishop’s wife is not the bishop.”—Bruce R. McConkie

Warnings to a Bishop“Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.”

1 Timothy 3:6-7

“Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil”

Quality of a Wife

“Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

1 Timothy 3:11

Three goals for Women1. Study diligently

2. Pray earnestly.

3. Serve willingly

Although Paul was speaking of bishops, most of these are qualities that the Lord expects all men to develop

Physically fit

Willing to pay tithes and offerings

Qualities of Today's Man

Dressing modestly, and unblemished by body piercings and tattoos

Choosing uplifting entertainment

Not using crude, profane or vulgar language or gestures.

Keeping sexually pure

Repentant

Honest

Sabbath observer

Upholding priesthood covenants

Having a Faith in Jesus Christ

Qualities of Today's Woman

They have ‘more trust in the Lord (and) more hope in his word’ This inner spiritual sense seems to give them a certain resilience to cope with sorrow, trouble, and uncertainty.”--James E. Faust

“Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world…will be drawn to the church in large numbers…female exemplars will be a significant force in both the numerical and spiritual growth of the Church in the last days.”--Spencer W. Kimball

“The women are a great deal more inclined to believe the truth than the men; they comprehend it more quickly.”--Brigham Young

“Nevertheless neither is a man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord”(1 Corinthians 11:11)
