    Dear Readers

    Sheillah

May I take this opportunity to introduce MAN Magazine.

A bi-monthly publication that has been created to

accommodate the wellbeing of men. A publication that dishes

out all the info that you need to know arraying from the

fastest cars, construction, nance, export and import, sports,

technology, fashion, the latest gadgets as well as relationships

and reviews on an extensive range of subjects. I think its also

a good stepping stone for the ladies out there who would like

to use this as a laboratory to study men and get to also know

what they think of the opposite sex.

Just like the MAN slogan states, Legends in Motion,

the cover of our very own rst issue has been graced

by a legendary Motivational and Inspirational speaker,

Mr. Azim Jamal. A very smart and principled Jamal talks about

his passion for his work, family and life in general and goes on

to also enlighten us on the journey of his branding of The

    Corporate Su.

Having given you the highlights of the mainMAN in this issue,

I am not going to go on about what you should expect to read

in this issue. Not for starters but Id recommend that you take

your time to get familiar with MAN magazine and tell me

what you think. Theres a wide range of astonishments yet to

be revealed. You know how men can be full of surprises now

    dont you. Enjoy!

pair of clutches split the power

    transmission between odd- and

    even-numbered gears. If youre, say,

    accelerating in second gear, third

gear is already engaged but the odd clutch

is disengaged. When you want to up shift, you touch a paddle on the left bar, and in an

instant the even clutch disengages and the

odd one engages. Theres no detectable interruption in power to the rear

wheel. Such systems have been around for quite a while in racing cars and are

about to become fairly common in some run-of-the-mill production cars, like

the Ford Focus. However until now, no one but Honda has managed to make

one small enough for motorcycle use. If anything this new 1237cc V-Four has

ditched that unnecessarily complex valvetrain and adopted a conspicuously

simple one: the Unicam design as seen on Honda single-cylinder dirt bikes.

Unicam motors have, as the name implies, a single overhead cam. The intake

valves are actuated directly by the lobes, while the exhaust valves are operated

    via rockers.

Someone who failed his exams in

school and struggled as a child. Science

was not his cup of tea. He did much

    better in Accountancy and Sports.

However it is only when he openedhis birth-day (what he was born with)

gift and switched from Accounting for

business to Accounting for life that he

really began to shine his light.

Give us a brief account of your up-

    bringing?

My grandfather moved to Africa from

India when he was 14. It took him 4

decades to become successful in Africa.

I was born in Kisutu where we had no

oor in the house, moved to Upanga,

then Kariakoo. We were about 45

people living in one big house - my

dad, his several brothers and sisters

and all their children. The house

was always full with lots of children.

Our house was never short of

    abundance!

Later, I studied in Mombasa and UK

    before migrating to Canada and

    marrying a wife from India.

Today, I live with my parents who are

totally Eastern and my children who

are totally Western. And I am half East

(born there) and part West (worked

there). So I have the best of west and

    east in my house.

Did you ever envisage that one day

the world will know Azim Jamal or

that you would be a sought-after

    inspirational speaker?

Yes, there was something inside of me

always waiting to unfold and explode!

Is it really what you wanted to be?

As a child, I had no idea or direction.

At 18 it began to gradually change.

At 21 onwards my desire got a little

stronger. However, it was only when

I was 43 when I hurled myself totally

into this career after a soul stirring

    experience working as a volunteer.

What inspired you then and when did

    it happen?

I was so shaken by poverty and

conditions of the Afghan refugees that

I wanted to help people like them.

I realized that even though I had 3

    professional accounting degrees I

was not passionate as an accountant.

What is Jamals typical day like canyou take us through it?

I wake up at 1.30 am, read, write,

think till 4 am. Meditate from 4 to

5 am, then exercise, followed by

    days activities including speaking,

    coaching, consulting and family time

depending where in the world I am.

Is inspirational speaking a talent, a God-

given gift or is it something that couldbe learned and enhanced over time?

It is a God-given gift which can be

    enhanced by focus and practice.

    How would you characterize your

    style of speaking?

I like to begin by understanding the

client need and pain followed by the

ideal objectives of the client. Myspeaking is thus tailored in response

to client need and objectives. I try

to avoid the monologue style of

    speaking. I prefer the interactive

    where the participants are engaged.

Do you think it can work here in

    Tanzania knowing the typical

    Tanzanian mind set?

Absolutely! I have been coming to

Tanzania every 3 to 4 months for the

past 3 years and have built a good

    steady and recurring business here.

I have also begun speaking at

    Dar-es-salaam University where the

    message has been well received.

What else are you involved in and that

    you really enjoy doing?

I am always doing some voluntary

work. I work with various AKDN

    organizations including the ones in

    Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

    Do you usually work alone?

Yes and No. When I wake up at 1.30 amand work, I am alone. During the day it

is full of people especially when I am

speaking, consulting or coaching. If I am

doing research and reading, I do it alone.

What do you do in your free time?

Any games, a sport for relaxation?

I love spending quality time with my

wife Farzana and my children Sahar

and Tawq. My parents live with us andare great role models for my children

and I cherish my time with them. I love

playing football with my son Tawq and

obviously coaching him. Being with my

daughter keeps me on my toes because

she is so quick and insightful. Also I

    enjoy following the English Premier

    League and Champions league, and

    watching my favorite team Manchester

    United play.

    Anytime for family?

Absolutely! I am 7 to 8 months out of

the year home with the family. Since my

work is exible, I get a lot of quality time

with them. This is a big blessing for me.

    How do you dene success?

Being authentic and achieving the goals

you set for yourself (not the ones

    others set for you).

What advice would you give someone

    treading your footsteps?

Be focused. Know what you want and

more importantly why you want, what

    you want.

Is there a limit for you career-wise?

The sky is the limit! The key is to do

things for the right reasons and enjoy

the ride. The destiny is in the journey!

Where do you go from here?

To continue to shine my light and

inspire others to shine their light. To be

a loving father, husband, son and human

being. To live one day at a time and to get

better and better everyday in every wayand making a difference to one and all.

Describe some of your most important

    career accomplishments.

On May 28th, 2009 in New York at

    the worlds largest book convention,

Book Expo, my co-authored book The

Power of Giving won the prestigious

Nautilus Gold award for the category

social change / activism / peaceful

    solutions. The Nautilus Book Awards

    recognize and reward world-changing

books. This is the 9th annual award.

is what I am best at - I was born to do

this and reects the Corporate Su

approach - inspiring leaders at all levels

to unleash potential and regain balance.

As an entrepreneur, you are able to

keep many balls in the air. How do

you do this? What tips can you offer

    others?

I believe in less is more! In other words

having clear weekly and monthly goals

which are aligned to your long term

vision is what gets the best results.

If you have too many priorities, you

have no priorities! Instead of having a

To Do list, start doing an Undoing

List. The key is to do less and do it

well and ensuring the less you pick todo is very important work.

    Youve worked with many award-

    winning individuals. What are the

    lessons youve learned from them?

They work with a good team.

    They are focused, disciplined and

determined. They have clear goals and

execute around a tight set of priorities.

Would you like to offer any advice to

people wanting to go into your line of

    work?

It is a very fullling work. However, you

    need patience, resolve & determination.

It takes time to become successful. It

took me a good nine years! For me, the

struggle was worth it as I got better

    and better at my craft.

    What is your philosophy towards

    work?

Work is a sacred act, a

    prayer. Give yourself totally

    to work and perform with

    pride. Work denes who you

are. Picasso once said work is

    the ultimate seduction.

    Past winners include: His Holiness

the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra and

    Eckhart Tolle. An experienced team

    of book reviewers, librarians, authors,

    editors, bookstore owners, and leaders

    in the publishing industry carefully

select the nalists and winners in a

    three-tiered judging process.

Also my books including The Corporate

Su, 7 Steps to Lasting Happiness and

The Power of Giving are published in

many countries and translated in nine

    languages.

The Power of Giving has hit # 1

twice on Amazon once topping Harry

Potter and Da Vinci Code and on 17th

    October 2009 hit # 1 on Barnes &

    Noble.

How did you discover your passion for

    writting?

    Actually, speaking came much more

    easier and natural for me.

I got better at writing over time.

However, I still need an editor to

go through my work! I am strong

    on content and natural ow

but not as strong on grammar.

If you had not chosen to share your

gift of inspiration speaking, what else

    would you have done?

    I had three professional accounting

degrees - Fellow of the Chartered

    Association of Certied Accountants

    (FCCA), Chartered Financial

    Planner (CFP) and Certied General

Accountant (CGA) and was a senior

partner in an accounting rm. I was

good at sports, selected for Tanzania

National cricket team and East African

combined schools when I was 18. Also

won many trophies in football, table

    tennis and cricket including voted

Sports man of the year twice. I could,

therefore, have been a good sports

    coach.

Also, I would be passionate doing NGOwork. However, I feel my current work

    TECHNOLOGY

    We are already

    beginning to

    see what the

    future holds for

    Internet TV. If

you miss your favorite television program

you can go to the networks website and

watch the episode in its entirety. In fact,

many networks are promoting the fact that

you can catch up on all the episodes that

you may have missed in order to be caught

up on popular serial dramas such as Lost

and 24. Missing one or two episodes of

those programs can leave a viewer confused

as to what is happening on the series and

    can alienate the viewer.

That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Technology is changing at warp speed and

part of the allure of internet television is that

you can decide when you choose to watch

the program There is no need to sit in front

of your TV for that must see episode as we

once did. That is why network executives

are trying to come up with ways to make

Internet TV an interactive experience for

viewers and gure out how they can reap

    the rewards of such efforts.

Most households outtted with cable or

satellite television services are familiar with

video on demand. Users can select from

a list of available movies, documentaries

and cartoons what they would like to view

and the time that they want to watch the

program. A fee is added to the service

for each program that is selected. The

interactive TV model would build upon the

popularity of video on demand and enhance

    the service.

The latest advance in Internet TV is

called IPTV or Internet protocol TV, also

known as interactive personalized TV. It

is attempting to bring television viewing

to home watchers in a way that has been

personalized just for the viewer. IPTV is

taking advantage of mash-up technology so

there are various layers of music, graphics,

video and text on screen. As a viewer you

can select what information you want to be

    displayed.

For example, there might be scrolling

text shown to the viewer as he positions

the remote control in a certain way that

would be hooked into an entertainment

database such as IMDB. The text will give

the viewer an actors name and past movie

and television credits. If the viewer was

watching sports, he would be able to get

access to the players stats. With another

remote control button the viewer could

nd out what outt the actor is wearing

and order it for himself right from the

comfort of his own sofa. Users will be

able to interact through their television

the way that they currently do with their

computer. This functionality adds a new

dimension to voting polls that so many

    reality television shows use today.

IPTV is currently being tested now

to work out the delivery system.

    The programming will be delivered

by network infrastructure such as a

broadband device. In order for the

product to become a success, there will

need to be sufcient infrastructure to

handle the demands of the users. No

one will be happy if the feeds are slow

or if the picture pixilated or breaks up

    during the transmission. The ongoing

testing will also be trying to determine

the average user interest in such a

service. Streaming video and live video

feeds are becoming more popular, but

users currently can only get this type of

    entertainment from the internet.

After watching an episode of the reality

show Big Brother, wouldnt it be great

to opt in and buy the live video feeds

to continue watching what happens in

the house right from your television?

The same technology will also make it

possible to chat with other viewers of

the video feeds. A separate device like

a Sidekick that is attached wirelessly

to your television would enable the

viewer to chat and text each other

    while watching the streaming videos.

You can get a taste of online TV by

putting online TV into any search

engine. The results will be lists of online

    TV aggregators. The aggregators gather

television programming from all overthe world and allow users to watch the

    programs online.

    All videos require Windows Media

Player or Quick Time real Player to be

installed on your computer in order to

watch the programs. If you were curious

to see what a news programming from

Vietnam or Italy looks like, you can watchit from your computer.Online TV allows

you to choose which programs you are

interested in from a variety of different

ways. You can select programming by

country of interest or genre. Genres

    consist of cartoons, childrens shows,

    games, drama, comedies, humor, news,

and adult programming. Full length prime

time television shows are available to

watch for free as are full length major

    motion pictures. The site generates

revenue by the advertising it runs.

    Television networks are embracing the

Internet. The CBS network signed an

agreement with YouTube to show various

clips of their programs on the popular

social network site and have reported an

    increase in network television viewing

since the clips have hit YouTube. The

network is reaching viewers that they

have not been able to reach before.

Television is starting to embrace the

model of operation similar to the music

industry. A recording artists releases his

album and all of the songs are available

to the public should they decide to listen

to the music whenever they wanted tohear it. Television networks have been

    operating on the networks programming

schedule and not the television viewers

schedule. That is about to change with

the advances that are being made with

IPTV. You wont have to wait a whole

week to see the next installment of The

    Ofce.

    INTERIOR DESIGN

    Many people run

    out and purchase

    formal furniture

    for their dining

    rooms only to

    nd out later

that they prefer a more casual setting.

Perhaps this has happened to you,

nding yourself in a fully-furnished dining

room that feels terribly out of place.

Fortunately, you do not need to be stuck

with your costly mistake. By using just

one or a few of the following tips, you

can transform a formal dining room into

    a casual dining milieu.

Instead of dark rich colors like red or

dark blue, paint your walls in a lighter

hue. Choose bright airy colors like

yellow, white, or light green. For added

interest, do a faux wall treatment to

give the look of aged paint. This is

    accomplished by using Venetian plaster

treatment or a washing technique with

    thinned furniture stain.

    Simplify your multilayered formal

window treatment by removing some of

the layers. Leave behind only one layer,

like the window topper or the sheer

    translucent curtain, shades, or blinds.

Use a whimsical rod instead of the

    formal cornice board.

    Paint dark, intricately-carved tables and

chairs a light color. This is a quick way

to make formal dining furniture emerge

less formal. If you think you may want

to convert it back to formal use in the

future, you should use slipcovers and

    tablecloths instead.

    Instead of simple boring tablecloths

and slipcovers, make your room more

interesting by using a mix of patterns on

the chairs and layering your tablecloths.

Be unique and creative in your fabric

    choices.

Try using a chenille white throw blanket

spread on your table to turn the mood

from formal to laid-back. If you have a

wall-to-wall carpet, you may want to

layer a lightweight rug with a simple

A formal china cabinet can be difcult to cover up or disguise. You can

change the look of it by changing what you display in it. Put away the

gold-trimmed china and crystal glassware and display simple clay and

    rustic pottery instead.

Another option is to use it somewhere else in the house, and replace

it with an iron and wood bakers rack or a simple wall shelf.

Instead of hanging a formal oral still life painting complete with a

tapestry on the wall, or simple illustrations.

Put away your fancy candleholders and gold accessories and display

1Always use cash flows and notaccounting income to create yourinvestment decision. Cash flows are the

result of the total effects of implementing

the project or investment scenario only

    after all costs are removed!

2Do not include sunk costs in yourinvestment analysis. They are alreadyspent, gone, kaput; use only the costs that

will be incurred by the new projects or

investment. There will be a tendency to

see how much youve already invested.

Use sunk costs to justify going ahead with

the project anyway DONT! It would be

irrational to use past expenditures to

consider a verdict which can only affect

    the future!

    3You must consider opportunity

costs as costs of the project orinvestment. If you use something that

could be used for something else, the

cost to replace the use of the something

else must be included in your capital

    budgeting analysis. Always consider

alternative uses of capital and resources

as costs to the capital budgeting project

    or investment.

4Look beyond. You must consider not

just the rst order of consequences,

but the orders of consequences following

your project decision. Build a scenario of

    contingencies given the project decision.

Look at the downstream effects of the

decision, what are the side effects? Are

there hidden costs, if so add them to the

decision. Will the project steal market

    share from ongoing investments? What

is the expected effect of these losses?

5What are the effects of the non-

    conformities. Dont let the hypothesis

you make about the present and the

future be blinding. In the world we live

in today, things alter overnight! What

    about the nonconforming assumptions

you make? How flexible are the beliefs

that you have established the project

    parameters upon? Accounting for this

now, will keep the value of the project

    in real terms.

6Consider the utility of time notjust the time value of money. Withchange occurring so rapidly, how quickly

you get to the marketplace often

determines how much utility is available

for your investment decisions. It is

    enormously intricate to calculate the

utility of ideas ; often the marketplace is

the only valuing entity; but as a planner

you must gain a feel for what happens if

youre not rst, your project is outdated

before you go online, or sudden shifts in

    macroeconomic factors change project

    assumptions. There arent ant guarantees.

But, he who ventures forth blindly, even

though with courage and certainty, may

    need a parachute!

7Consider risk management, contingency planning and disasterrecovery as a cost of the project! Risk

    analysis, business interruption and

    disaster recovery are important factors

when considering the ultimate cost or

discountability of cash flows. What is the

risk level of the project or investment?

How can this cost be factored into

the calculation? If the project is a total

failure, is wiped out by unforeseen

    contingencies or even hampered by

personnel problems, what will be the

effect on the company, organization orinvestment?

8Last, but not least, a maxim fromProfessor Sharpe at StanfordUniversity who says, it is important to

    remember that investment opportunities

    may influence ones consumption decision

    and that consumption opportunities may

    influence ones investment decision.

    The most common methods

    of exporting are indirect

    and direct selling. In

    indirect selling, an export

    intermediary normally assumes

    responsibility for nding overseas

    buyers, shipping products, and getting

paid. In direct selling, the producer

deals directly with a foreign buyer.

    The paramount consideration in

    determining whether to market

indirectly or directly is the level of

resources a company is willing to

    devote to its international marketing

effort. These are some other dynamics

to reect on when deciding whether

    to market indirectly or directly:

    The size of the rm.

    The nature of its products.

    Previous export experience

    and expertise.

    Business conditions in the

    selected overseas markets.

    DISTRIBUTIONSCONSIDERATIONS

    Which channels of distribution should

the rm use to market its products

    abroad?

Where should the rm produce its

products and how should it distribute

    them in the foreign market?

    What types of representatives, brokers,

    wholesalers, dealers, distributors,

retailers, and so on should the rm

    use?

What are the characteristicsand capabilities of the available

    intermediaries?

    INDIRECT EXPORTING

    The principal advantage of indirect

marketing for a smaller company is that

it provides a way to penetrate foreign

    markets without the complexities

and risks of direct exporting. Several

kinds of intermediary rms providea range of export services. Each type

of rm offers distinct advantages for

    the company. Commission or buying

agents are nders for foreign rms that

    want to purchase domestic products.

They seek to obtain the desired items

at the lowest possible price and are

paid a commission by their foreign

clients. In some cases, they may be

    foreign government agencies or

governmental rms empowered tolocate and purchase desired goods.

    Foreign government purchasing

    missions are one example.

    Export managementcompanies

An EMC acts as the export

    department for one or several

producers of goods or services. It

solicits and transacts business in thenames of the producers it represents

or in its own name for a commission,

    salary, or retainer plus commission.

    Some EMCs provide immediate

    payment for the producers products

    by either arranging nancing or

    directly purchasing products for resale.

Typically, only larger EMCs can afford

to purchase or nance exports. They

usually specialize either by product or

by foreign market or both. Because

of their specialization, the best EMCs

know their products and the markets

they serve very well and usually have

    well-established networks of foreign

    distributors already in place. This

    immediate access to foreign markets

is one of the principal reasons forusing an EMC, since establishing a

    productive relationship with a foreign

representative may be a costly and

    lengthy process.

One disadvantage in using an EMC is

that a manufacturer may lose control

    over foreign sales.

    Most manufacturers are properly

concerned that their product andcompany image be well maintained in

foreign markets. An important way for

a company to retain sufcient control

in such an arrangement is to carefully

select an EMC that can meet the

    companys needs and maintain close

communication with it. For example, a

company may ask for regular reports

on efforts to market its products

and may require approval of certain

types of efforts, such as advertisingprograms or service arrangements. If

a company wants to maintain this type

of relationship with an EMC, it should

    negotiate points of concern before

entering an agreement, since not all

EMCs are willing to comply with the

    companys concerns.

    Export trading companies

An ETC facilitates the export ofdomestic goods and services. Like an

EMC, an ETC can either act as the

    export department for producers or

take title to the product and export

for its own account. Therefore, the

terms ETC and EMC are often used

interchangeably. A special kind of ETC

is a group organized and operatedby producers. These ETCs can be

    organized along multiple- or single-

    industry lines and can represent

    producers of competing products.

    Export agents, merchants, or

    remarketers purchase products

    directly from the manufacturer, packing

    and marking the products according

to their own specications. They then

sell overseas through their contactsin their own names and assume all

    risks for accounts.In transactions

    with export agents, merchants, or

    remarketers, a rm relinquishes control

    over the marketing and promotion

of its product, which could have an

adverse effect on future sales efforts

    abroad. For example, the product

could be under priced or incorrectly

positioned in the market, or after-sales

service could be neglected. On the

other hand, the effort required by the

    manufacturer to market the product

overseas is very small and may lead

to sales that otherwise would take a

great deal of effort to obtain.

    Piggyback marketing

    Piggyback marketing is an arrangement

    in which one manufacturer or

    service rm distributes a second

rms product or service. The most

    common piggybacking situation is

when a domestic company has a

contract with an overseas buyer to

provide a wide range of products or

    services. Often, this rst company

does not produce all of the products

it is under contract to provide, and itturns to other companies to provide

    the remaining products. The second

    company thus piggybacks its products

    to the international market, generally

    without incurring the marketing and

    distribution costs associated with

    exporting. Successful arrangements

usually require that the product lines

be complementary and appeal to the

    same customers.

    DIRECT EXPORTING:

    why you should venture.

The rewards of direct exporting for a

    company include more control over

    the export process, potentially higher

prots, and a closer relationship to

    the overseas buyer and marketplace.

These advantages do not come easily,

however, since the company needsto devote more time, personnel, and

    corporate resources than are needed

    with indirect exporting. When a

    company decides to export directly

to foreign markets, it habitually makes

    internal organizational changes to

    sustain more complex functions. A

    direct exporter normally selects the

markets it wishes to penetrate, chooses

the best channels of distribution for

each market, and then makes specicforeign business connections in order

    to sell its product.

    EXPORTING, IMPORTING & DISTRIBUTION

    22/49

The rest of this chapter discusses these

aspects of direct exporting in more detail.

    Organizing for export

A company new to exporting generally

treats its export sales no differently from

domestic sales, using existing personnel and

    organizational structures. As international

sales and inquiries increase, however, the

company may separate the management of

its exports from that of its domestic sales.

    The advantages of separating international

    from domestic business include the

    centralization of specialized skills needed

to deal with international markets and the

benets of a focused marketing effort that is

more likely to lead to increased export sales.

A possible disadvantage of such a separation

is the less efcient use of corporate resources

    due to segmentation.

    When a company separates international

from domestic business, it may do so at

different levels in the organization. For

example, when a company rst begins to

export, it may create an export department

with a full or part-time manager who

reports to the head of domestic sales and

marketing. At later stages a company may

choose to increase the autonomy of the

export department to the point of creating

an international division that reports directly

    to the president.

    Larger companies at advanced stages

of exporting may choose to retain the

international division or to organize along

product or geographic lines. A company

with distinct product lines may create an

    international department in each product

division. A company with products that

have common end users may organize

geographically; for example, it may form a

division for Europe, another for the Far East,

and so on. A small companys initial needs

may be satised by a single export manager

who has responsibility for the full range of

    international activities.

The prostate gland is an organ

that is located at the base or

    outlet (neck) of the urinary

    bladder. The gland surrounds

the rst part of the urethra. The urethra

is the passage through which urine

drains from the bladder to exit from the

penis. One function of the prostate gland

is to help control urination by pressing

directly against the part of the urethra

that it surrounds. Another function of

the prostate gland is to produce some

of the substances that are found in

normal semen, such as minerals and

sugar. Semen is the uid that transportsthe sperm. One can manage quite well,

    however, without his prostate gland.

In a young man, the normal prostate

gland is the size of a walnut. During

    normal aging, however, the gland

    usually grows larger. This enlargement

with aging is called benign prostatic

    hypertrophy (BPH), but this condition

is not associated with prostate cancer.

Both BPH and prostate cancer, however,

can cause similar problems in older men.

For example, an enlarged prostate gland

can squeeze or impinge on the outlet of

the bladder or the urethra, leading to

    difculty with urination. The resulting

    symptoms commonly include slowing

of the urinary stream and urinating

    more frequently, particularly at night.

    Prostate cancer is a malignant

    (cancerous) tumor (growth) that

consists of cells from the prostate

gland. The tumor usually grows slowly

and remains conned to the gland for

many years. During this time, the tumor

produces little or no symptoms or

outward signs. As the cancer advances,

however, it can spread afar the prostate

    into the surrounding tissues. Moreover,

    the cancer can metastasize (spread

    even farther) throughout other

areas of the body, such as the bones,

lungs, and liver. Symptoms and signs,

    therefore, are more often associated

    with advanced prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the most

common malignancies in men andthe second leading cause of deaths

    from cancer. Most experts in this eld;

    therefore, recommend that beginning

at age 40, all men should undergo

    yearly screening for prostate cancer.

    The cause of prostate cancer

is unknown, but the cancer is

thought not to be related to benign

    prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)

    The risk (predisposing) factors for

    prostate cancer include advancing age,

    genetics (heredity), hormonal inuences,

    and such environmental factors

    as toxins, chemicals, and industrial

    products. The chances of developing

    prostate cancer increase with age.

    - OR JUST AN ITCH?

    IS IT SERIOUS

    MEDICAL

  • 7/30/2019 MAN Magazine Issue 01

    24/49

To date, however, no specic prostate cancer

gene has been identied and veried. Genes,

which are situated on chromosomes within the

nucleus of cells, are the chemical compoundsthat determine specic traits in individuals.

    Testosterone, the male hormone, directly

stimulates the growth of both normal

prostate tissue and prostate cancer cells.

    Not surprisingly, therefore, this hormone

is thought to be involved in the

development and growth of prostate cancer.

Thus, prostate cancer under age 40 is extremely

rare, while it is common in men older than 80

years of age. As a matter of fact, some studies

have suggested that among men over 80, between

50 and 80% of them may have prostate cancer!

Genetics (heredity), as just mentioned, plays a

role in the risk of developing prostate cancer. Forexample, African American men have a higher risk of

getting prostate cancer than do Japanese or white

men. Environment, diet, and other unknown factors,

however, can modify such genetic predispositions.

For example, prostate cancer is uncommon in

Japanese men living in their native Japan. However,

when these men move to the United States, their

incidence of prostate cancer rises signicantly.

Prostate cancer is also more common among

family members of individuals with prostate

cancer. Thus, a person whose father, grandfather,

or even uncle has prostate cancer is at an

increased risk for also developing prostate cancer.

    LEARNING & READINGFOR CHILDREN

    Every parent knows the

    magnitude of reading for

their child. The issue is not in

wanting your child to read, it

is in getting your child to read. Children

do things that they enjoy doing. The

trick lies in teaching your child to enjoy

    reading.

Learning to read involves learning theconcepts of letters and words. Letters

put together form words, words put

together tell stories. By reading to your

child, you teach that child that written

words tell stories and that stories can

convey you to wonderful places and

events. Knowing your child and his or

her interests will help guide your choices

when it comes to books. Choose subject

matter that is of interest to your child,

and your chances of encouraging your

    child to read will increase.

Reading needs to be directed to your

childs level of development. Choose age

    appropriate books and subject matter

for your child. Just as in television viewing

and internet access, it is necessary for

you as a parent, to be aware of what

your child is reading and to indemnify

that their reading choices will not be

    detrimental to their development.

Choose brightly colored books that will

    grab your infants attention.

    Continue to givebooks as gifts,

    and encourage

    your child to give

    books as gifts too.

    PARENTING

    MAN OCT- Nov, 2009

Words are not necessary at this age. By

describing the pictures to your infant,

you are providing the foundation for

learning that the pictures can tell a

story or provide a description. Choose

board books or comparable books that

allow your infant to have tactile contact

with the story and let your infant look

through their picture books on their

    own. Encourage it!

Try to establish a set reading time every

day. At bedtime or naptime, reading can

help relax the child and give both of

you something to look forward to each

day. Select books that have a rhyming

cadence or fairy tales that are familiar

to your child. Familiarity with a story

encourages your child to return to a

book and will help hold their interest.

Repetition will help your child memorize

    passages or entire books. Memorization

can help lead to word recognition and

is an imperative part of the learning to

    read process.

At this stage, your child may be learning

to spell their name and recognize the

letters in their name. Encourage this

letter recognition by asking your child

to point out different letters that they

    recognize when reading. Support letter

    recognition and memorization of the

alphabet. Have your child point out

those letters that they recognize. Start

    working in word recognition, words

such as mom, dad, no, yes, are words that

    the child can easily identify.

Allow your child to begin selecting

their own books to read. This will help

you trail your childs interests and can

guide future book choices for you. Visit

a book store with your child. Most bookstores have detached childrens sections

that are designed with the intention

of getting your childs attention. What

an important way to pioneer the

opportunities to read, all those books

set up with the sole intention of being

read. It can get your child asking for

    books!

Teachers will now be working withyour child attempting to teach him or

her to become a better reader. Reports

will come home designed to track your

childs reading. It is important to have

a set time for reading at home each

    afternoon or evening. The television

and video games need to be turned off,

and your child needs to be focused on

reading. Reading aloud to your child isstill important. You can introduce chapter

books and read one or two chapters

from the book together each evening.

Your child will remember this together

time long after they have started reading

on their own. By investing your time with

your child at this stage, you emphasize

the importance you place on reading.

    Include books in your gift-giving

strategy for your child. Choose books

that you know will interest your child.

Start your child on series books such

as The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The

Magic Tree House, Nate the Great, The

Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, etc.

Series books can create a separate world

for your child that they cannot wait to

get back into each day. By this age, you

have helped to create an active interest

in reading for your child. For some

children, the challenge will not be in

keeping your child interested in reading,

but in getting them to read the material

they need for school. Teach your child to

    explore alternative methods for nding

reading material. Introduce them to the

card le at the library where they can

research by subject. Keep track of your

    childs reading progress. Conversations

with your childs teacher can help you

gauge your childs reading level and

ensure that your child is on track with

their reading. It is critical that your child

has the proper reading foundation now

so that they do not have educational

difculties later. If your child is struggling

with their reading, there are many

programs set up in most schools to help

get your child back on track. Your childs

    teacher should be conscious.

Continue to give books as gifts, and

encourage your child to give books as

    gifts too.

It is possible to pass your love of reading

on to your child. It is also probable

to create a love for reading in your

child when reading is not one of your

passions. Reading opens a whole world

up for your child. Teach them that books

are the keys to learning about life, and

    that books are our friends.

Where did the nameBongo on setderive from?

Essentially it came up as contemplation.

There is a lot of hear-say of late about

the youth being productive in society. So

we thought that as young Tanzanians weshould do something about it in a unique

way. Being the patriots that we are, we

decided to look at phrases from the

other side of the coin; instead of having

the casual I love Tanzania, we resulted

to keep it more youth by using Bongo

On Set. Its a phrase that was brought

to life by three dynamic young friends

    namely; Soba Sanganya, Muhidin Samze

    and Daniel Eugene.

What is the intention of Bongo onSet to the public? How do you expect

people to depict this new trend?

It is meant to portray nothing other

than nationalism. This is simply all about

    ones love for their country.

Why did you venture in this business?

We ventured because we knew we were

capable of doing something sensible. Its

also a fast way of sending messages to

the public. Business wise, its cheaper to

    promote or advertise your product.

What have you gained from this

    business?

We have achieved our dream. We have

    popularized ourselves and are making

money lots of cash which has enabled us

to establish our new products. If you take

a good look at our products, you will getto see the vast difference between the

    primary products and others.

How is the market responding to your

    product?

We have been well received and people

    love our products.

How do you feel about Bongo on set?

We are taking it as a challenge and it

keeps giving us the urge to do more. Its

very motivating to see people wearing

your designs and seeing something that

youve produced being well received by

    the public.

How do you manage your business as

    youngsters?

Our business is very small and simple

so we normally handle the sales

    and marketing. The biggest degree

attained here is none other than

time management. We have time for

    everything.

What is your business guiding principal?

Quality. Anyone in the fashion or

branding industry will tell you the same.

If you produce a product with class, be

rest assured that your product will sell

itself with no hustle what so ever.

Whom do you expect to wear Bongo

Our product is an open market product.

Absolutely anyone can gladly wear it.

Is there anything we should know about

How do you balance between school

    and your branding business?

Its very easy; during weekdays we

concentrate on school and over the

weekends we deal with the branding

    business.

What do you intend to do in the future?

    Danny:Business man

Whom would you love to work with

    locally?

    Anyone who produces good quality

    products works for us.

Whom would you love to dress?

A.Y; he tends to do lots of shows outside

the country. Hed denitely make the

    perfect ambassador.

What have you done to advertise your

brand outside dare salaam so far?

We have taken the initiative to provide

t-shirts to a few local artists such as

C-pwaa to help spread the wings of

bongo on set. We also provide t-shirts

    FACTS YOU

    DIDNT KNOWABOUT WOMEN

    Y

    awning, a woman covers a

    mouth with a palm, instead

    of a st.

Shaking hands, a womanalmost does not shake it.

    Overwhelming majority of women

consider washing with water and soap

harmful (What exactly they use to wash

faces - look in a bathroom).

On an offer to show hands a man often

    stretches open palms. Women stretch

hands palms downwards, probably toshow irreproachable manicure.

Women do not like, when their hands

are free. Therefore they always carry a

handbag with themselves - to nger its

strap, hold its edge and dig in it all the

time. Everything will approach for the

lack of a handbag - a fan, gloves, a book,

    a ower.

Sitting down, women compress knees or

simply hold them in parallel. Therefore in

public transport it is more preferable to

have a lady as a neighbour.

    Aspiration to compromise, inherent

in a female, affects in how they tell

abusive jokes. They can dare to tell even

a dirty joke publicly. But will murmur a

keyword so mufedly that anybody will

    disassemble nothing.

Even more often they try to transfer

    an indecent highlight using mimicry,

    gesticulation and a desperate look.

Dressing, a woman rstly will put on ashirt, then - trousers. Men usually act on

    the contrary.

    Woman prefer keeping loose change

and banknotes in the same place. Their

    pockets seldom ding.

At a punch a woman exposes a thumb

    forward.

Theyve always been smarter than you

think -- even back when they were

encouraged not to think. In the late

18th century, the popular book A

Fathers Legacy to His Daughters by

John Gregory, urged young women to

hide their good sense: If they happened

to have any learning, it was meant to

be kept a profound secret, especially

from the men, who generally looked

at women with jealous and malignant

eyes on a woman with great parts, and a

    cultivated understanding.

Women prefer unfaithful spouses to have

meaningless sex. Having sex, a woman

thinks of whether she looks beautiful.

A word of warning to all the guys out

there contemplating an affair : If you must

cheat, keep in mind that whatever youdo and whoever you do, dont fall in love.

Women in general have an easier time

(for lack of a better term) coping with

your one night of meaningless sex than

they do if you have developed emotional

feelings for the woman. The oppositeis true for men: meaningless sex is

devastating to us. Women who cheat

    and develop emotional attachments or

bonds with another man are less likely

    to permanently damage their current

    relationship

Women have no respect for logic they

can openly disagree with themselves and

    still be right.

They can carry on complex relationships

with men, with or without our

participation; there is nothing in the

world more fragile than an unbreakable

    woman.

They are born able to read minds and will

    always nd our inability a disappointment;

and nally, women are a contradiction in

terms. This is a statement that doesnt

    make sense.

No matter how hard men try to gure

it out, Its also one that goes a long way

in explaining why women are all so

glorious and beautiful and why men cant

stop falling in love with them.

    SAFETY

    TRAININGFOR YOUR

    TEAM

    Does your construction

    team require safety

    training? Construction

    safety training is

    sometimes left up to the

safety manager, who either takes over

the job of training the construction team

or designates other personnel such as a

site safety coordinator or supervisor to

do the training if the manager is too busy

    with construction projects and other

    important matters of business.

While it certainly is feasible to have

one of your own to be in charge of

    construction safety training, sometimes

the lack of personnel, the lack of

experience in safety training, and the

lack of the knowledge, skills, and abilities

necessary to perform such a task makes

    everything a little more complicated.

For example, whoever is in charge of

training will have to spend considerable

time planning and preparing for the

    actual safety training, particularly if

theyve never done it before. If the safety

    manager has the required knowledge

and experience, but lacks the time to do

it, then he or she will need to spend time

    anyway training the designated trainer.

If this is the case for your construction

team, why dont you consider hiring a

certied safety trainer to come in and

do the training for you? Even if you

have someone on staff available to train

your construction team, hiring out is a

    worthwhile option to consider.

Certied safety trainers, as the name

would suggest, are trained in and

    knowledgeable of all matters related

to safety (in general) and construction

safety (in particular), so you would know

    that your construction workers would

be receiving accurate, thorough, and top-

    notch information.

    In addition, construction safety trainers

are trained and experienced in effective

safety training methods and also possess

an understanding of how adult learners

learn, which essentially means if you

choose a good trainer, that is that you

can be assured your construction team

members will not only receive the

    information, but actually remember

it and become involved in the safety-

    training process.

Yes, hiring a certied safety trainer will

cost you money up front, but it could

also save you a lot of money in the long

    run.

Because of the high-quality safety training

your construction team will receive, you

are helping to prevent future accidents

that could put out some of your workers

as well as damage equipment that would

have to be replaced. In addition, youll

be saving a lot of time, seeing as you

wont have to prepare to teach safety

training yourself, or spend time training

a potential trainer who has never done

this before. Finally, its simply so much

more convenient to hire out than to

attempt to undertake the task of training

    your construction team yourself.

Perhaps you dont personally know of

    any local construction safety trainers

who might be available to come and

train your team. So where do you nd

one? One idea is to ask around and see

    if anyone knows one.

When considering a number of seemingly

    qualied certied construction safety

trainers, make sure they have the

    required education, certications, and

other necessary training; that they are

experienced in their job; and that they

have references to back them up.

    Compare their rates, but dont

necessarily go with the lowest (assuming

its the best deal) or the highest (assuming

youre getting the best quality). Check

    out each candidate carefully.

Eating red meat several times a week may be linked

to increased rates of heart disease, cancer, and

obesity. A healthy substitute to beef, mutton, and

pork may be found in a variety of sh. If youre

not sure how to swop your family from eating creatures

on four legs to those with ns, here are some ideas that

    may be of use.

    1. Buy fresh sh at the market. If you are the seafood man,

try lobsters, crab, or the octopus. There are many varieties

and styles of sh to choose from.

    2. Look for canned alternatives. Salmon, tuna, herring,

mackerel, and sardines are just of the processed sh that

can be stored for long periods of time. There are even

lunch-size packets available for individual meal servings.

Processed sh may contain added salt or include bones,

so be careful when you open a can.

    3. Experiment with sh dishes. Fish isnt just for dinner

enhancement. Deep Fried Tilapia not only introduces a

main meal, it can serve as the meal itself when accompanied

by any food or salad. Kids would love sh sticks or ngers,

and you can enjoy steamed sh for a change. No matter

what the reason for eating, sh can ll a gap and make a

    good impression.

    4. Make sh a worthwhile substitute. Instead of a steak on

the grill, go for any sh of your choice. Fried pork cutlets

can be exchanged for sh llets.

    5. Check the safety level of your sh. Some long-lived

species of salt and fresh water sh contain questionable

levels of mercury from polluted streams Bottom feeders

that include shellsh may not only contain minerals, but

may carry a form of bacteria that can be deadly for those

that consume this type of sh. Fish is an effective substitute

    Nutritional benets of apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away This old adage may

be truer than you think. Recent studies have suggested

that the consumption of apples can help control weight

gain, lower the risk of heart disease and ght cancer.

Though most people think the esh of the apple is the

most delicious part, the skin is unquestionably the most

    nutritious.

The apple skin contains 4 milligrams of quercetin, an anti-

oxident compound preventing oxygen molecules from

damaging individual cells. This can prevent cell changes

that can lead to cancer. A Finnish study concluded that

men who had the highest intake of quercetin lowered

their risk of heart disease by 20%. This compound has also

been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors and keep

    cancer cells from spreading.

bers found in apples is called pectin. Pectin reduces

the amount of cholesterol produced in the liver, slows

The oddly named dish bubble and squeak comes

from that same distinguished country that also enjoys

sophisticated dishes such as Toad in the Hole and

Spotted Dick. Those ignorant men unfamiliar with

British cooking can stop blushing now: were really not

    kidding about that last one!

Ideally a simple dish made from fried cabbage and potatoes,

bubble and squeak has about as many variations as it does

eaters. Reasons for the name are fairly abundant, but the

most credible explanation seems to be that it bubbles in

the pan (the potatoes) and squeaks (the cabbage) in your

    mouth.

A greasy breakfast is one of the best ways to get going

again after too much of the night before. Were fond of

the time-honoured bubble and squeak for this reason.

Its tasty, but just tasteless enough to be harmless to jittery

stomachs, and lling without being too greasy. At any rate,it does not stipulate a great deal from the partied-out

    cook:

    Shredded potato

Finely sliced cabbage ,Butter Salt ...thrown into a pan in

desired quantities and fried until cooked and brown.

The variations occasionally involve a change of green

vegetable, but more frequently they involve the potato.

For those who havent sworn off the hair of the dogthat bit you idea, take note: this is a somewhat hearty

dish that goes well with a Bloody Mary made with a light

to season the bubble and squeak with pepper, vinegar, or

    even hot sauce. Bon Apetite!

How much caffeine is okay for a healthydiet?

A look at the effects of caffeine on thenervous system, dehydration levels andenergy levels.

Caffeine is a stimulant found in many beverages and foods.

The uses and applications of this compound are many. It

may be used as an enhance in energy, pain management,

thermo genesis and weight loss. Along with these uses it

can also cause some potentially dangerous conditions in

    the human body.

Caffeine is a stimulant that works by increasing the activity

level of the central nervous system (CNS). This increase

raises the heart rate and contraction rate of muscles in

the body. It also causes an increase in thermo genesis

which is your bodys metabolic rate.

This translates into the release and utilization of stored

energy which is derived from fat cells.

The numerous effects caffeine has on the human body make

it a very desirable ingredient to put into the body. Along with

the perceived positive effects also come some negative andpotentially hazardous side effects to over usage.

Caffeine is a diuretic and can cause the body to lose water at

a rapid rate. Hydration is the most important health factor

to consider in the human body. Using caffeine for weight

loss or an energy boost causes the body to enter a state

of dehydration. Most common uses of caffeine suggest using

it before and during exercise. This puts the body into even

more of a dehydrated state. Always match your caffeine

beverage intake with equal parts water of to help stave ofdehydration.

Using any stimulant can create a mental and physical

addiction in the human body. Caffeine increases energy levels

two ways. It causes an increase in CNS activity and mental

acuity. This in turn endows an energy boost during physical

activity and lessens the physical symptoms of fatigue. The

dependency that occurs is based on the effect caffeine has

on the body. With daily usage the body will build a tolerance

to the effects caffeine provides. This will create the need forusing more and more caffeine to achieve the desired effects.

Limiting caffeine to occasional usage for an energy boost will

    lessen the bodys dependency.

Considering the factors that caffeine has an effect on it is a

moderate stimulant that provides some desirable effects. Most

people can use caffeine and have no undesirable reactions.

People with any sort of hypertension, high blood pressure,

or cardiac concerns should avoid caffeine. The simple effect

it has on raising the heart rate puts the risk factor way tohigh. Also any person using medications should consult with

their medical professional on the contraindications caffeine

    may have with the medicine.

A cup of coffee or a diet soda contains enough caffeine to

obtain the effects caffeine offers. When the daily consumption

of caffeine becomes abusive and constant that is usually when

the body suffers from the negative effects that caffeine can

cause. The most probable success pattern for caffeine usage

is to limit yourself to one caffeine source a day.

top speed of 257 mph+ and

reaching 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. This

baby cost nearly half as much as

the Bugatti Veyron, yet has enough

power to top the most expensive car

in a speed race. It is estimated that

only 25 of this exact model will ever

In 1994, the McLaren F1 was

    the fastest and most expensive

car. Even though it was built 15

years ago, it has an implausible top

speed of 240 mph and reaching 60

mph in 3.2 seconds. Even as of today,

the McLaren F1 is still top on the

list and it outperformed many other

    supercars.

    $440,000. A supercar with

    dynamic stability control and a

top speed of 205 mph+ and it

can reach 0-60 in 3.9 seconds.

The Porsche Carrera GT applies the

absolute calibers of a true racing car to

    offer an unprecedented driving feeling

    on the road.

This is by far the most expensive

street legal car available on the market

today. It is the fastest accelerating car

reaching 0-60 in 2.6 seconds. It claims

to be the fastest car with a top speed

of 253 mph+. However, the title for the

fastest car goes to the SSC Ultimate

Aero, which exceed 253 mph pushing

this car to 2nd place for the fastest car.

    ADifferent Me is Cole searching

for that one man that can

make her whole. Sure, its not

a new topic. However, the allure to aKeyshia Cole album is how well she

can deliver that concept through her

voice and lyrics. Her hit single Love

wouldnt have been as massive had it

not been for the emotion that emoted

from her throat. On her latest venture, the stress and conict isnt

as prevalent in her voice. Rather, a pleasant smile can be heard

in this outing for better or worse. Songs like You Complete Me

and Brand New feature Cole at her nest. Both songs exhale a

certain relief that provides a soothing soulfulness similar to what a

warm blanket and bowl of soup can provide on a chilly night. The

moody production of Oh-Oh Yeah-Yea gives Keyshia a canvas to

paint her feelings on while Nasir Jones drops by to punctuate the

offering. As good as her life may be now; it always doesnt translate

on record. Some songs just fall a at. This Is Us may be a good

song for any other vocalist. But for Keyshia, it lacks the energy

    that she is known for.

    Human is at

    its core an

    album of

    ballads, but from time

    to time it shows that

    Brandy can still put

    together something

to make you move. Right Here (Departed), a rhythm

heavy joint that adds some electronic synths and

heavy claps to the usual ballad formula while Brandy

lays down her typically awless lyrics. It doesnt have

the sonically adventurous energy of her last album

Afrodisiac, but its enough to get your head nodding. Its the same story on Piano Man, an echoing track

thats (thankfully) an ode to her musical partnership

with Darkchild, not a cover of the Billy Joel song. The

swirling production feels upbeat, but Brandy embeds

the tracks with a somber quality with lyrics like,

sing me a song about heartache, I promise I can sing

every word. what makes a radio hit has changed a

lot since the days of Sittin Up In My Room, and she

would have done well to connect with some of the

    industrys younger blood.

    old singer-songwriter says

    tribute to the Rat Packs

Steinem of R&B on Miss Independent: She moves

like a boss. . . . Thats why I love her. Beyond its genuine

lyrics, Gentleman also proves that Ne-Yo is a brilliant

pop omnivore, gifted with a silky voice and an ability topull everything from the Beatles to Stevie Wonder to

clubland synths under his sonic umbrella.

    Aquick look at the writing

    and production credits for

    Lionel Richies latest reveals his

obvious desire to connect with an

    audience too young to remember

mid-80s hits like Dancing on the

Ceiling and Hello. Akon, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Tricky Stewart

and the-Dream all contribute to an album with an up-to-the-minute

digital sheen. Yet thanks to Richies confidently grown-up vocals

and his consistently mature subject matter. Heres a guy whose

romantic timeline stretches past tonight to Forever and a Day, as

one track puts itJust Go never sounds calculated or desperate. In

fact, highlights like Im in Love and Im Not Okay showcase

a cultivated cool. Perhaps a first for this longtime champion of

    tenderness and devotion.
