THE AVM STORY - 75

A cursory glance at the ‘Matrimonial, columns of Indiannewspapers reveal the preference and prejudice. ‘Wanted fairbride.....!’, so run the advertisements.

The aversion towards black skin in women seems to bedeeply embedded in the Hindu male psyche. It was indeedcommendable that Meiyappan chose to take this theme in‘Naanum Oru Penn’. Not many films focused on this sociallyrelevant theme have been produced in India. Not many wouldrisk such ventures except pioneers and socially consciousfilmmakers.

This film was produced under the banner of Murugan Broth-ers, a partnership firm with the sons of Meiyappan - Murugan,Kumaran and Saravanan - who were now fully involved in filmproduction.

The dark-skinned woman who suffered in her married homewas played with immense depth and empathy by C. R.Vijayakumari. A sensitive actress, she was good in such rolesand her performance struck deep sympathetic chords in bothfemale and male moviegoers and it led to the success of the film.

Her husband in the movie was the Tamil film star S. S.Rajendran (also her husband in her private life at that time). Two great actors and popular stars also had roles in thesuccess. One was S. V. Ranga Rao and M.R. Radha.

S.V. Ranga Rao (1918-1974) was a much talented multi-lingual star and actor of high order and merit who could carryany role with depth, feeling and conviction. M.R. Radha was astage and screen star and cult figure of his day. In his heydayshe was a major draw with his roles of villainy.

In ‘Naanum Oru Penn’, the dark woman is unlettered too andthe villains try to take advantage of her illiteracy but she turnsthe tables against them and emerges victorious, astonishingone and all. The positive approach of an oppressed womanfighting the system and winning appealed to audiences and thefilm was a solid hit. It won the President’s Silver Medal for theBest Regional Film of 1963. It also won other awards from theFilmfare Magazine, Bombay, and Film Fans’ Association,Madras for the Best Tamil Film.

‘Naanum Oru Penn’ was remade in Hindi as ‘Mein Bhi LadkiHoon’ (1964) with Meena Kumari in the lead role as the dark-skinned woman and the Hindi film star Dharmendra as hero.It was also produced in Telugu as ‘Naadhi Aada Janme’ (1965)with N. T. Rama Rao and Savithri in lead roles. The remakestoo were directed by Thirulokachandar.

By now Thirulokachandar was well established as talentedfilmmaker and he moved ahead making more hits. Later heturned producer too, thanks to the initial break and backinggiven by Meiyappan.

His next film for his alma mater was ‘Kaakkum Karangal’1965). It had the star pair S. S. Rajendran and C. R. Vijayakumariin the lead roles and the plot line was inspired by the famousbest-selling Somerset Maugham novel, ‘The Painted Veil.’ Thisfilm too fared well.

With a well- equipped and managerially organized studio withexcellent technicians and film production facilities under hiswings, Meiyappan had many producers coming to him to makepictures as joint ventures. As an enterprising entrepreneurand shrewd businessman, he offered them his studio facilitiesas a package deal for a share in the film and its profits. He gavethem raw film stock too. In the credits of such films the AVMProductions banner did not appear along with those of theproducers. However many such films were not only successfulat the box-office but also became memorable movies. Theyproved profitable for Meiyappan and also gave him the plea-sure and satisfaction of having contributed much to theirmaking in his studio.

It all began in Tamil with ‘Kula Deivam’ (1956) and such filmsincluded ‘Deiva Piravi’ (1960), ‘Paava Mannippu’ (1961),‘Paarthaal Pasi Theerum’ (1962). ‘Pacchai Vilakku’ (1964),and ‘Babu’ (1971). Interestingly Sivaji Ganesan played the leadrole in all of them (except ‘Kula Deivam.’

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND

Yeddiyurappa’s miner-gang ran smack into a boulder namedHegde and the honest Indian shouted ‘Eureka’. Law and justicehave for the nonce overrun the maggots because there are stillhonest legal eagles like friend Hegde and the dedicated group oflieutenants who provided him with the armament scatteredaplenty by the thieving horde. The billion plus of this God-filledcountry say “Thank you, Santhosh”.

Justice K. S. Hegde, father of Santhosh, was in the line ofsuccession to be the Chief Justice of India but Prime MinisterIndira Gandhi ignored the queue and plopped a pliable friend on thejudicial throne. Hegde and three others, men of flesh and steelminds, resigned at this obvious dishonesty of the executive.

Santhosh, the intrepid son of K. S. Hegde, could not hail the ironlobby and say, “Well done, boys. Dig and be merry since the naturalresources of the country belong to all, and the fact that the iron oreshappen to be in Bellary does not disqualify you from your ambitiousproject of exploiting the boon and sharing it with your citizenbrothers who receive a paltry pay from the public coffers”.

I, a Keraliyan, did my B.A. in Presidency College Madras wherea tall gangling guy named Chandrasekhar Hegde used to sit nextto me. I do not know if Santhosh is related to him, but, from ourassociation for two years in B.A., I looked upon the sect as anintellectually higher one than common clay.

Chandrasekhar Hegde strayed into a mighty pharmaceuticalCompany and retired as G.M about 4 years ago, and a friend of 50years became dust on a fell evening when he was watering hisplants, leaving the world to darkness and to me. I am one up on himbecause it is good to be alive.
