LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Good work by MLA will boost public faithSir, In the news item ‘MLA’s office renovated’ published in Mambalam

Times (issue dated Feb. 25 - March 3, 2017), it was stated that B.Sathyanarayanan, T. Nagar MLA, has renovated his office adjoining ShivaVishnu Temple, Usman Road to enable his constituency residents to meetand present him grievances for appropriate resolution. The MLA has alsoannounced that three PDS shops, Amma drinking water booth and AmmaMarunthagam will be inaugurated very soon. He has also announced thatmini bus service will be introduced on the Ellaiamman Koil-Koyambeduand West Mambalam-Egmore routes. In the unhealthy political environ-ment of the State in the last year or so, I welcome the proactive announce-ments by the MLA and I hope that he fulfills them all at the earliest. It willgive lot of confidence to the residents of T. Nagar and Mambalam, aneighbourhood with innumerable civic issues. The MLA was chided by anumber of residents for supporting Sasikala when he went for a walk inthe park, but he can root out the negative thoughts by acting on hispromises and doing good work in the constituency. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Hoping for good work by T. Nagar MLASir, This refers to the news item ‘T. Nagar MLA cornered in park during

morning walk’ published in Mambalam Times last week. It was stated thatthe MLA, B. Sathyanarayanan, was heckled by fellow-walkers in JeevaPark, T. Nagar for supporting AIADMK General Secretary V. K. Sasikalaand extending support to Chief Minister Eddapadi K. Palaniswamy.

The walkers must be commended for the extraordinary courage shownto question the MLA. I hope that the MLA takes it positively and improveshis image by doing good work in the constituency. Election after election, nominees of leading parties try to woo voters by making tall promises, butonce they win and become MLAs, they do not care to work for theconstituency but are busy following their own personal and politicalagendas. I sincerely hope that Sathyanarayanan, who is a first time MLA,proves me wrong and works for the benefit of the residents of theneighbourhood. He made some tall promises last week, and just acting onthem will be a good start in the right direction. V. S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T. Nagar

An honest auto driverSir, I would like to share a pleasant and memorable experience I had

on March 1 with an auto driver. I had booked the auto through Ola and thedriver Raja came promptly and dropped me at my bank. As I was gettingon with my business in the bank, I did not even realize that I had forgottenmy Motorola smart phone in the auto. After about 20 minutes, even as Iwas standing in the line, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I turned aroundto see the auto driver with my mobile in his hand. He handed it over sayinghe had found it in the passenger seat. I was floored by the honesty of theauto driver and thanked him for his noble act of driving back all the wayto hand over the phone. He refused to accept money and went away. SinceI had his number, I called him in the evening and he came over to my house.I complimented him again and enquired about his family details andpersuaded him to accept some money to meet his daughter’s educationexpense. As we mostly read only negative reports about Chennai autodrivers I felt it is important to bring about the good deeds done by GoodSamaritans like Raja.

His contact number is 81900 19954. Prof. Dr. Rameeza. A. Rasheed,D3, Vijay Srinikethan, 8, Giri Road, T. Nagar. Ph: 2834 3289

Are PDS officials campaigning for subsidy tobe given up?

Sir, It has been reported by many residents that following the imple-mentation of the National Food Security Act by the Tamilnadu Govt., theauthorities have, albeit in a hush-hush manner, started a campaign urgingration card holders to give up the food subsidy under the Public Distribu-tion Scheme just like the campaign by the Central Govt. to give up LPGsubsidy. It has also been reported that there is a sudden short supply ofprovisions, rice and other items in PDS shops in the past few months. Myconcern now is the short supply genuine or a deliberate attempt to plugthe scheme thereby forcing card-holders to opt out of it? Instead of thiscampaign, the authorities should tighten the stock monitoring system toensure that PDS items are not diverted to the open market and also takestringent measures to prevent bogus billing. V. S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Will the smart city project ever see daylight?Sir, We have been hearing for the past two years about Chennai

Corporation’s smart city project in which T. Nagar, the most commer-cial and the least civic friendly hub of the city, is expected to get a facelift.

Chennai and Jaipur were selected in the first phase of the Smart Cityproject announced in 2015 by the Union Ministry of Urban Develop-ment and Rs. 200 crores was allotted to each city for the project.

While Jaipur has gone ahead with the project implementation, timeand again we only see fancy announcements made by Chennai Corpo-ration officials through the media, but there seems to be no progressat all.

A special purpose vehicle to supervise execution of the project wascommissioned last May, and now, due to the current political scenario,Vardha cyclone and the impending drought, the deadlines are likely tobe missed and the project might be put on the back burner.

The first ‘Pedestrian Plaza’ trial in T. Nagar evoked a good responsefrom the residents, but the second one, which was postponed multipletimes and conducted last week without proper media coverage, onlyevoked lukewarm response.

Jaipur has shown good progress. In the 13 months since the an-nouncement, the city has set up a citywide Wi-Fi network.

I now wonder if the project will ever take off. R. Badrinarayanan,Cart Track Road, T. Nagar

Narrow concrete roads not suitedfor smart city projectBy Our Staff Reporter

Under the smart city project, Chennai Corporation has earmarked23 interior roads in T. Nagar for smart street facilities like Wi-Fi,recreational spaces and better lighting.

But, according to urban planners and project consultants, most ofthe streets selected are narrow with concrete surface and do not fit therequirements.

They said that with the streets already narrow, it will be tough toprovide for parking space or widen the footpaths.

“We have to erect smart lamp-posts at strategic locations, widenpavements, earmark parking space and build rainwater rechargestructures on both sides of the road. But since most roads are concrete-paved, key features like underground ducts for utility cables will betough to make”, said an official. “Most of these streets are 6 to 9 meterswide, while the minimum requirement is 12 meters”, he added.
