NO HOLDS BARREDGaana Gandharvan

Isn’t it almost oxymoronic that the “Mellisai Mannan” has beencondemned without a hearing by the unseen tribunal whosepraises he has sung through soulful music since the day he couldcall his mother “Amma” for the Goddess of Music to rejoice in!

Even invoking his pet Gods was not sufficient for an extendedexit-line for the mendicant to overstay his tenancy of this beautifulworld full of good people, flora and fauna, about whom and aboutwhich he has, in his short worshipful 87 years, created music toplease all hearers.

His name in the passport document, for entry all over the world, embraces the whole universe with the stamp “VISWANATHAN”.His universe was an overflow of his universality that speltcohesion and oneness of every creation on earth.

When I was living in Kannur, having escaped from Hitler’shordes in East Africa, Viswanathan was a music teacher in myvillage but his vocal chords were the most praised human organsthere. A distant relative of mine, Neelakanta Bhagavathar, wasapproached by our hero for inspiration. They recognised theirrespective claims to further expansion and this perhaps aided ourhero’s climb to the summit which he reached faster than anynovice.

There was a blank in the journey to recognition but he zoomedand landed in Madras, from where his real musical journey to thetop began, aided and abetted by his pleasing personality anddedication to the cause so dear to his psyche: music.

After we settled in Madras in 1945, Viswananthan expanded inthe independent atmosphere of India and his music took wings forhim to soar to the heights his talents took him to deservedly. Asmusic directors, he and Ramamoorthy rose like eagles in themusic world so high without even thinking that the stragglersbelow are no good. Since there were no more worlds to conquer andthe next coveted ascension is to be one with divinity, the GaanaGandharvan has quietly escaped.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Pedestrian plaza project delayed due to protestby commercial lobby

Sir, The proposal to put up a pedestrian plaza on ThyagarayaRoad from Bashaym Road to Anna Salai seems to have metwith stiff opposition from shopkeepers. The shopkeepers fearthat if the plaza comes up, they may incur loss ofbusiness. Following the opposition by the commercial lobby, the civic body is on a mission to convince the shop owners.Chennai Corporation must bear in mind that the pedestrianplaza is being planned for the comfort of the public. As such, why should it bother about the shopkeepers and try to convincethem? If the shopkeepers continue to oppose it, will the civicbody give up the project? Does not such a move send a wrongsignal to the public? The shopkeepers have been doing businessgiving maximum inconvenience to the public. Even thefootpaths meant for pedestrians have been usurped by theshopkeepers. If the civic body has any concern for the public,it must go ahead with the proposal by ignoring the protests ofthe shopkeepers.— V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T.Nagar

Roadside eateries a health hazardSir, Of late, a number of unlicensed mobile eateries have

come up in several nooks and corners of the streets in T. Nagar, selling fast food. Even the commercial complexes in the suburbhave put up sheds to sell fast food. While the aroma emanatingfrom these food items would tempt people to eat them, thequestion is: Are they made hygienically and are they fit enoughfor consumption? At the very look and the way they are keptin the open with flies encircling the food items, one could easilyjudge that these items are not hygienic and unsafe for humanconsumption. The quality of water and oil used to make theseitems is also unknown. Wax coated paper cups are widely usedto serve beverages and other snacks like peanuts and chatitems. Do these roadside outlets come under the purview of theHealth Department and do Health Inspectors sample the foodsold by these outlets? There have been several instances ofpersons coming down with stomach infection or fever aftereating at these roadside outlets. To add to the problems ofhealth, many of these eateries, including some hotels, let outwaste into the drainage pipes which often get blocked causinglot of problems to the residents. When there is so much of hypeand hoopla over the noodles made by the giant Nestle, onewonders why there are no efforts on the part of the authoritiesto stop proliferation of mobile/roadside eateries and saleof unhealthy food that is consumed aplenty by the denizens.—T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, RanganStreet, T. Nagar

Authorities should enforce stricter laws to curbchain snatching

Sir, Of late there has been an increase in the incidence ofchain snatching in the city. It is almost reported daily in themedia. It has more or less become a full time profession formany as they go uncaught. It is also disturbing to note that inmany cases the culprits have been found to be educated youthswho do it for obtaining fast buck to splurge on luxuries. The hugeincrease in price of gold has made this crime more lucrative. Many incidents go unreported as the investigation process istedious and expensive. Even when a culprit is apprehended, thelaws are lax enough for him to get out on bail easily. It hasbecome an ordeal for a lone woman walking on the road.Recently in our neighbourhood, a lurking chain snatcher struckin the morning when the woman of the house was drawingkolam in front of her house. Will the police and law makersenforce stricter penalties to mitigate the crime?— Dr.Chidambarakumarasamy, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

Residents should lend support to TNRWASir, This is with reference to the article ‘T. Nagar Residents

Welfare Association on member recruitment drive’ publishedin Mambalam Times last week. The association is renderinga very good service to the neighborhood with respect to civicissues. It is fighting for the eviction of unauthorised hawkers, who have occupied the entire service lane of Usman Road andbattling for the pedestrian’s rights. It organises frequent meetswith the elected representatives and authorities of the variousgovt. departments to discuss and find solutions to civic problems.Through its diligent efforts, long standing Metrowater issueswere solved in a number of neighbourhood colonies. Theassociation also has a legal wing to fight against the large scalebuilding norm violators and law breakers. More and moreresidents should rise to the Association’s call and enroll asmembers and render their service to create a pollution-free,hawker-free and violation-free T. Nagar.— Sooryan Basheer,Ramanathan Street, T. Nagar

Do not close down Railway Station Post OfficeSir, There was a proposal to shift Railway Station Post Office

(Station Road, West Mambalam) to some other rented place. But it appears that the proposal has been shelved and theauthorities have instead decided to merge it the Main PostOffice in Postal Colony, West Mambalam. It will affect seniorcitizens like me as Postal Colony Post Office is not withinwalking distance of Station Road. I request the postal authoritiesto reconsider the decision and allow the Railway Station PostOffice to continue in the present location for the benefit of thenearby residents.—T.V. By Our Staff ReporterAfter an enthusiastic re-

sponse on the inaugural day onJune 29, the number of com-muters on the Chennai MetroRail (CMRL) has dropped dras-tically on weekdays.

For regular commuters who

CMRL witnesses steep drop in passengerson weekdays

self drive or use other means ofpublic transport, it is a combi-nation of reasons, includingconnectivity, high fares andaccessibility to the station thatdeters them from switchingover to Metro Rail.

The commuters are far andfew at Ashok Nagar station onweekdays. The photos takenduring the morning peak hourson a weekday shows close toempty platforms and coaches. However, good crowds can beseen on Saturdays and Sun-days when non regular com-muters travel to experience theride. A.L. Bhatnakar, a seniorexecutive with CMRL, saidthat the drop in passengercrowds was expected as CMRLhad only opened a small stretch

of 10km. It was more of atrial beginning for us, hesaid. Once the 20 km stretchfrom Egmore to St. Tho-

mas Mount becomes operational, the connectivity will improve andmore and more passengers wouldopt for Metro Rail, he added.
