Malvern Retreat House is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors

has approved the Strategic Plan 2014-2017.

“This Plan outlines the goals and direction of our efforts at Malvern Retreat House in order better serve our retreatants in the years to come,” said James A. Fitzsimmons, President of Malvern Retreat House. “It will serve as a road map for the next three years.”

The Strategic Plan was prepared over the past year-and-a-half by the Board of Directors and Associates of Malvern Retreat House, with a good cross-section of Malvern constituents; it was facilitated by Edward F. Swenson &

Associates, Inc., via the Nonprofit Center of LaSalle University School of Business.

The bulk of the process involved assessing the needs of Malvern’s constituents and potential constituents. As part of this process, Malvern hosted “Listening Sessions,” which brought together interested parties from three groups of people in the Fall of 2012: Women, Young Adults, and a General Session (comprised of men and women of all ages). “The participants’ valuable feedback and insights helped shape this strategic plan to help Malvern better address the spiritual and temporal needs of each of these groups,” said Fitzsimmons.

Malvern seeks to operate under the Guiding Principles outlined in our revised Vision and Mission Statements, with a foundation of the core values of Worship, Discipleship, Hospitality, Respect, and Excellence.

The plan incorporates programming and organizational strategies centered on three major goals:

• Programming that Conforms to the New Evangelization Mission

• Enhanced Retreatant Experience• Organizational Sustainability

As Francis Marx, Immediate Past Chairman, noted after our 100th Anniversary celebration, “Ultimately, Malvern’s goal is to set our sights firmly on what needs to be done to ensure that Malvern is around for the next 100 years, so that our beloved Malvern Retreat House will be here for our children, grandchildren, and all future generations to enjoy.”

“These initiatives leave me optimistic and encouraged about the direction in which Malvern is headed,” Marx concluded.

Dear Retreatants:

In his recent homily on Palm Sunday, Pope Francis urged the faithful, including himself, to ask themselves “Has my life fallen asleep?” This call for self-reflection is consistent with our mission here at Malvern. Our mission statement challenges us to come to these holy grounds to deepen our personal relationship with the Lord. Our call to discipleship, like the early disciples, is a call to strengthen in our hearts and minds the commitment to our gift of faith. I hope your Lenten season provided you with a genuine opportunity to prepare for Easter Sunday and the upcoming Pentecost celebration in order to light a fire in yourself and strengthen our faith community here at Malvern and in your parish.

In this issue of Prosit, you will see the new Executive Committee members of the Board of Directors. I would like to thank the outgoing officers for their service, especially Frank Marx, who served as Chairman of the Board for six (6) years. Their attention to detail and focus on a vision for our ministry has enabled us to be in a strong position for years to come.

Our Three-Year Strategic Plan has been completed after nearly eighteen months of planning, discussion and writing. I would like to thank our facilitators Ted Swenson and Jennifer Shropshire for their help in keeping us on track. In the lead article, you will see the three main areas we will embark on in our roll-out of the plan. The planning used focus groups, listening circles and individual interviews to develop these strategies. Thank you to all who helped shape this working document.

One of the shining moments in 2013 was the anonymous gift of 1 million dollars for our Capital Campaign. This gift will enable us to fully

complete the renovation of St. Joseph’s Hall. A component of the gift is a $500,000 matching gift requirement. We are working diligently to raise the $500,000 to fully meet the intention of the donor and help us then begin the refurbishment of St. Joseph’s Hall. Please give generously when you receive your notice and enable us to update our facilities for all retreatants especially our elderly and disabled persons.

We are pleased to announce that Sr. Pauline McShain and James Foley will be the honorees to receive the St. Joseph the Worker Medal at our Annual Communion Luncheon on November 16, 2014. These two honorees have given much to our ministry, and I would ask you to put the date on your calendar. This year we will host the Communion Luncheon on our grounds.

Our thanks to Pat Ciarrocchi for forwarding a reflection on her recent trip to Rome to cover the Philadelphia Delegation for the 2015 World Meeting of Families to be held here in our own

Archdiocese. Malvern Retreat House will be represented on the planning committee, and a call for volunteers will go out to enlist your support to organize this massive event where an estimated 1 million-plus pilgrims will come to Philadelphia to join in the expected Papal Mass on the parkway. It is expected we will need 7,000 volunteers to manage the events. I’ll get back to you when additional information is available.

Our Young Adult Ministry continues to flourish. The group meets here monthly and is planning their annual retreat on May 30-31. Please pass this on to other young adults you know, and see if we can continue to develop this important ministry.

In addition, we have had a wonderful response to our growing day and evening of reflections, including Valentine’s Evening of Reflection, Widows and Widowers Day of Reflection, and our Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA retreat). See our website for the complete list.

We recently lost two former Board members and CA Captains. Bill Kelly and Bill Walsh passed into

eternal life, and they leave behind a strong legacy of faith here at Malvern and in their parish and family. May you rest in eternal peace and may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Thank you for your ongoing prayers and thoughts, and may this spring season give you much strength, joy and good health.

What is a Spiritual Retreat?

I am sure every Malvern retreatant who has invited friends or family members to accompany them on a retreat has encountered some version of this question: What is a retreat … what’s it all about?

Even though we have been on retreats, it can be challenging to explain the nature of a retreat to someone who has not had the experience. Yet, even for us veteran retreatants who think we know what a retreat is, it is valuable to think about this question: What is a retreat all about -- What are the Essential Elements of a good retreat?

In many ways, shouldn’t the Essential Elements of a good retreat be the same elements in living a good Christian life? In other words, shouldn’t a good Catholic man or woman be engaged each day in a schedule of religious practice that leads to growth in holiness? If anything, the difference between a retreat and daily Christian living should be intensity, and the deliberate concentration of time. In Malvern language, we call a retreat an opportunity to intensify our personal relationship with Jesus so that we are more capable of presenting him to the world.

The divinely given model of retreating, or making a good retreat, is our Blessed Mother. Her nine months of pregnancy was her intensified time in solitude to ponder the words of the Angel who conveyed to her the Word of God. She nurtured the Son of God within her so that she could then present Christ to the world. A retreatant is doing the same – spending intensified time in solitude with God so that he/she can present Christ to the world!

So then, with Mary as our model of retreating, let’s look carefully at the Essential Elements of a Retreat especially as they are revealed at the Annunciation as recorded in Sacred Scripture (Luke 1: 28-38).

The angel Gabriel said: Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you (Luke 1:28).

In the solitude, in the quiet of Malvern, God

speaks: Hail retreatant, favored one … you who are taking your time and giving it to me. On retreat we become more deeply aware that we are favored by God, for has He not created each of us uniquely and personally. The Lord is always with us, but on retreat we deliberately place ourselves at the disposal of God. We place ourselves consciously in the presence of the One who is always present to us.

And therefore, are we not blessed like Mary, the Mother of God? For through Baptism, confirmed in Confirmation and intensified regularly in the Eucharist, God Himself abides within us. God blesses us by making us His tabernacles on earth, like Mary. We are blessed because we carry in ourselves the fruit of her womb, who is Jesus the Lord!

During retreat, like when we are in deep prayer, we come to a deeper recognition of sinfulness. Yet, while our sinful state distinguishes us from Mary who was without sin, simultaneously we experience the loving mercy of Jesus and the supportive prayers of Mary, the Immaculate Conception. Blessed are we retreatants who come to know more deeply that we are loved and forgiven.

So again, what are the Essential Elements of a Retreat, and what must one do to have an authentic, Catholic retreat experience?

From our meditation on the Annunciation, our reflection on the Blessed Mother, and our knowledge of the Church’s practice of prayer throughout the ages, three Essential Elements of a Retreat can be identified:

1. Encountering Christ by Meditating on God’s Word

Sacred Scripture is an essential ingredient to a good retreat. In fact, without the Word of God, retreating into God does not happen; without the Word of God, we perish!

From the beginning of time God has communicated Himself to human kind. The God of Life and Love has given life and love to each of us. Through our reading, study and meditation on Sacred Scripture we discover God as Creator (Life) and Redeemer (Love). We truly encounter God Himself by pondering His sacred word; we learn who God is and how to be with Him. By praying with the Scriptures, God shows Himself to us as He really is, and in turn He teaches us how to respond to Him through prayer.

2. Encountering Christ in the Celebration of the Sacraments

By meditation we recognize our separation from God because of our sins. We see more clearly that we are in need of Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation if our sins are to be forgiven, and we are to be healed. The retreat sets the stage for the retreatant to humbly acknowledge his/her dependence on Christ and then express it through the Sacrament of Penance.

The celebration of Holy Mass is the centerpiece of any retreat, indeed in the life of the disciple. It is the fullest expression of Catholic worship and the fullness of devotion to God. At Mass the Word of God proclaimed in our midst takes form in Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. Christ becomes flesh for us in sacramental form. Truly the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Christians. Everything we do on retreat flows into the Mass, and everything we accomplish flows from the Mass.

3. Encountering Christ in the Silence An atmosphere of quiet with specific places where talking is prohibited is not an option on a real authentic retreat. Prayer is directing one’s full attention to God; prayer is making oneself available to God alone. One who is in love makes himself/herself completely attentive to the one loved. We cannot be attentive to God while sustaining conversations with others. Noise is an evil in the midst of those trying to be open to God’s promptings. Talking in places designated for silence is a serious act of disrespect to God and other retreatants. Silence is the sacred context within which an encounter with God is made possible.

May God continue to bless Malvern, may God grace those who come on retreat, may we perpetuate our retreats by daily meditation on His Word and by our frequent celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. With your Grace, may we believe and therefore Speak!

God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel, and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Keep a separate notepad for your Recruiting efforts. Each day you invite someone, write their name down on your notepad. Until you run into them again, keep them in your daily prayers. Seeing the notepad on a daily basis will help make sure you do not forget to pray for this person. Make sure you have the notepad in a constant place where you will encounter it on a daily basis. This way you can easily remind yourself of whom you are trying to recruit. These names will grow so fresh on your mind that when you next encounter them, you will be prepared to follow up on your invitation. The common theme among the top recruiters at Malvern is to pray for their prospects and persistently extend the invite in a gentle manner.

Malvern Retreatants Host Scripture Study “We ‘Cast the Nets,’ and Jesus Brought His People!”

Last year, Pope Benedict and Pope Francis renewed the chal lenge of the New

Evangelization, a call for all Catholics to seek a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and to encourage others, including inactive Catholics, to likewise experience this personal encounter. At Malvern, our rector, Monsignor Joseph Marino, and our Board of Directors, have responded by dedicating the next three years to advancing the goals of the New Evangelization. He has initiated a series of programs to encourage our retreatants to invite both active and inactive Catholics to retreat at Malvern in 2014 and empower our members to actively spread the gospel in their homes, parishes, and workplaces.

One of the Saturday afternoon workshops on our 2014 retreat schedule trains retreatants on how to start a scripture study group in their parish. The prayer of the New Evangelization asks, “If not me, then who will proclaim the gospel?” Lee Melair, Joe Gilbert and Tom Moore, members of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Group, were encouraged by this prayer and asked their pastor, Fr. Stephen Leva, for permission to conduct a parish Lenten scripture study program at St. Alphonsus Parish in Maple Glen. With Fr. Leva’s support, they spoke at each Mass on the weekend before Ash Wednesday, inviting parishioners to sign up for the eight week Quick Journey Through the Bible series, which is the series featured in Malvern’s Saturday afternoon workshop. They had bought 20 workbooks for

the program, and, to their surprise and delight, 80 parishioners signed up for the series that runs every Tuesday evening in Lent. Tom, Lee and Joe each took a turn facilitating the Quick Journey program.

Said Lee, “Expecting not more than enough people to fill our meeting room, we were overjoyed to have to find a place to hold almost 100 people who were eager to put meaning to the words of scripture and provide them with an evangelization

tool of their own.”

Said Tom, “While talking to parishioners about the series, I could sense the same need I had before joining our Bible Study Group. To begin reading scripture is a significant chal lenge; providing “tools” to help with this challenge encouraged parishioners to register.”

He continued, “Once the sessions started, the Holy Spirit joined us – beginning with the prayer for the New Evangelization. The attendance remains exceptional, the group discussions are thought-provoking, the gratitude is obvious, and our group grows in spirituality weekly. All of this has energized our Tuesday morning Bible Study Group, all of whom are humbled by this experience; we ‘cast the nets,’ and Jesus brought his people!”

One Journalist’s Reflection

On Sunday, March 23, 2014, I left Philadelphia for the Vatican. It was the sixth time in more than 20 years that CBS 3 Eyewitness News asked me to travel to St. Peter’s and the symbolic heart of the Catholic Church, to tell a story that our Philadelphia audience was eager to hear.

This time, the eagerness was palpable. A Philadelphia delegation of civic leaders and philanthropists had a date with Pope Francis. They were nervous, awed, and prepared to fulfill the mission for which they were sent – invite the Pope to visit Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families in September of 2015.

As broadcast journalists, my photographer, Will Kenworthy and I were honored to tell the story.

No matter how many times I’ve had the opportunity to visit Rome, as I walk across the ancient stones of St. Peter’s Square and look up at Michelangelo’s dome atop the Basilica – I am breathless. Its beauty, and grace … its scale and spirit… and its resonance of the people, arms filled with prayers become a witness to faith.

I am never casual about that.

This trip was different from the others –the first was Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua’s elevation to Cardinal. Later, St. Katharine Drexel’s Canonization, Pope John Paul II’s 25th Anniversary, Pope John Paul II’s death and funeral, and last year, Pope Benedict XVI’s historic resignation.

This time, the Philadelphia delegation, led by Archbishop Charles Chaput, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, had an agenda. There were meetings with the Pontifical Council for Families – which will be sponsoring the World Meeting – and then, the audience with Pope Francis.

At the start, we knew our delegation would be special guests at the Papal General Audience on Wednesday morning. But there also was an expectation that there would be a “private audience” – somewhere in a room at St. Peter’s. The media wouldn’t be permitted to be inside. We were expecting just photographs to tell our story.

That was UNTIL, we had word of a Vatican-ordered change, Tuesday night – less than 12 hours before the audience. Now, the Philadelphia Papal Team would meet Pope Francis, at the end of the general audience, under the canopy where the Pope sits, just outside the doors of St. Peter’s. They still would have a one-on-one introduction, and an opportunity to make a pitch to come the Philadelphia. For us, we could cover the meeting in the open.

Initially, I had a sinking feeling. Did the Pope cancel on us??? Was the delegation crushed???

I was waiting for a good natured “spin” on the change of venue. But that morning, I can honestly say, no one was bothered by the change. In fact, to a person, they were enthusiastic about the idea of pitching Philly in front of 100,000 people in St. Peter’s Square. It took them six minutes. The greeting, the pitch, an exchange of gifts, a blessing.

In the rain, I was ten rows behind the delegation. At one point, a patchwork of umbrellas blocked my view. But my photographer, Will, was 10 FEET away from Pope Francis. Pictures like that make the story intimate. For a TV audience, you want to bring them inside the power of the moment. I believe we did.

And that six minutes made an impression. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the President of the Pontifical Council for Families, tweeted that the Holy Father was impressed with Philadelphia’s enthusiasm.

I was impressed with the gentle expression on Pope Francis’ face, after the audience, meeting with children eager for his blessing. No grandfather has ever had a more loving look in his eyes.

Francis is holding up a different lens for Catholics worldwide to see their faith. The prayer is that Philadelphians will see that for themselves next year.

What are your job responsibilities?I am responsible for scheduling in and supervising the midweek and weekend wait staff and dishwashers. I also am here to make sure the dietary needs of the retreatants are met and to assist the captain with whatever they need over the course of the weekend.

What do you like most about your current job at MRH?I love meeting the new people who come to experience the wonder that is Malvern Retreat House. I love assisting our guests in any way that I can, whether it be simply a smile and a kind word or ensuring their dining experience is a good one. I also thoroughly enjoy working with the teenage staff on the weekends. My background is secondary education and working with these kids keeps me on my toes!

if you have ever attended a retreat at MRH, what is your favorite? is there a particular year that’s the most memorable for you?I have attended the McShain-Horstmann Family Retreat every year for the past 10 years with my husband and children, and before that I attended the Labor Day Family Retreat with my own parents and siblings. There have been many memorable moments over the course of these retreats, but nothing beats the time spent in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with my husband and children. Something so special happens in that room.

What is your favorite movie?My favorite movie is Braveheart.

What is your favorite book?My favorite books are the Game of Thrones Series.

Who is your favorite singer or band?My favorite band is The Dave Matthews Band.

What activities do you like to do when you’re away from work?When I am not at work, I love spending time with my husband and three children, enjoying the outdoors or having movie nights.

What place would you like to visit one day?I would love to visit Greece one day.

Hello, my name is Fr. Andrew Apostoli, and I wanted to let you know about a retreat I will be giving this summer at Malvern Retreat House on July 11, 12, and 13th.

It’s a retreat about Our Lady of Fatima. Many people are interested in Fatima, but have not heard all of the facts. I speak a lot on Fatima, and I have a book on Fatima, entitled, Fatima for Today, the Urgent Marian Message of Hope, and people tell me they learn things that they had not known before about Fatima. I believe that may be part of the reason why the peace Our Lady promised is not coming—because we have something to do with that, too — it wasn’t just the Pope’s consecration. You can be assured Pope John Paul II knew what he was doing, and that the consecration was accepted by Heaven. But what about all the other things involved in Fatima? Do you know what they are?

Even Pope John Paul II himself said that Fatima is more important now than it was in 1917.

We are approaching the 100th Anniversary of this great apparition, with an urgent Marian message of peace for the world.

So, if you want to learn about Our Lady’s message, and what you can do to help speed up the fulfillment of Our Lady’s promises at Fatima, especially the Triumph and an era of Peace that she said will come when enough people do what she has said, please come to the retreat. I’m sure you will learn a lot that you probably had not known or heard before in any way.

You Will Never Be the Same!

Ken Johnston, CA Captain of the Edward J. Friel, Sr., Memorial Group, has been a Man of Malvern since 1993, and takes great delight in reaching out

to bring the Gospel message to others.

“Ken’s faith is as authentic as you can get. You can see it in his eyes and the way he presents himself,” says Patrick Benner, Malvern’s Recruitment Manager. “He has unabashedly and tirelessly committed his daily life to bringing others to faith in Christ.”

Yet it wasn’t always that way for Ken. In his story below, Ken recalls his path to get to that point. Central to his witness is his personal encounter with Christ, which changed his life. As a result, his deep hunger and thirst to bring souls to Christ is very evident; his driving motivation is that he wants everyone to experience the same thing he has experienced—a personal encounter with Christ.

Malvern has played a significant role in my spiritual life. There were many, many steps in between my first retreat and starting my Gospel Reflection Group. I had been away from Church for quite a few years. My daughter started attending St. Luke’s in 1990, which kind of “forced” me back to Church. On December 30, 1991, in the middle of an alcoholic blackout, I was led to someone who would help me get into recovery. I got sober and was plodding along, when a couple friends invited me to come to Malvern. I had no idea what to expect. They joked about bowing in certain doorways and walking backwards through others.

In August 1993, I made my first retreat at Malvern in the Edward J. Friel, Sr. Memorial Group. It was on that retreat that I had a spiritual experience and knew that I was supposed to be there. I went to Confession, made the Stations of the Cross and prayed the Rosary for the first time in many, many years. I knew that this was where I belonged. On Sunday morning I woke up and knelt on the floor by my bed to pray. I started to cry and cry and cry.

It seemed like hours, and I could not get off that floor. After everyone left after Mass, I stuck around and remember walking around to different shrines and

being drawn in by the sculpture of Jesus in the Agony of the Garden behind St. Joseph’s Hall. I could relate to that agony after all I had put my family and myself through. I could also relate, now, to the resurrection.

I left Malvern on fire, and it was that experience that led me to seek answers to all the questions I had about the Catholic Church; it started me down the path to a deeper Catholic spirituality.

I came back the following year knowing that it would never be like my first retreat, just as no second experience is

the same as the first. I now return on the same weekend each year to try to help others discover what I found there. I then make another weekend each year in order to find the quiet time and the message that God is trying to get through to me that I cannot hear in the “busyness” of the world.

In addition to his retreats at Malvern, Ken’s numerous ministries and outreaches include starting the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s first unit of The Calix Society, “an association of Catholic alcoholics who are maintaining their sobriety through affiliation with and participation in the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous.” In 2010-2012, he served as national president of The Calix Society, a two-year term. He started a men’s Gospel reflection group at his parish, St. Luke the Evangelist in Glenside, and also helped the women begin a women’s group. In 2013 he began a new ministry, “Not Saints Yet,” to help re-evangelize Catholics in recovery. You can hear Ken on his twice monthly radio appearances on 800 AM, in the “Healing Hour of Prayer” on the 2nd and 4th Friday each month. Ken entered the postulancy for the Secular Franciscans (SFO), and will take his final vows as a professed member in 2016.

The Miracle of Malvern: Evangelization in Action

Boxing, martial arts, contact sports, taking people to jail in his job as Deputy Sheriff in the

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. That was how Jesse Romero used to channel his competitive fire, his spirit. Then, in 1986, a fellow officer challenged Jesse to pick up a Bible and use Faith instead of force as a way to find escape from the pressures of police life.

As Jesse rediscovered his Catholic roots, he also realized that most Catholics really don’t understand the basics of their faith, choosing to live out their lives in a kind of spiritual coma. For them – and us – Jesse is a five-alarm wakeup call. You see, during his years as a Deputy Sheriff, Jesse experienced the dark side of society every day; and yet he also saw the evidence of God’s work in some of the most unexpected places. What made the difference? Faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesse recalls the next step in his faith journey: “being evangelized through the Charismatic Renewal in 1988 while attending a Conference at the Los Angeles Sports Arena with 20,000 other Catholics who were on fire for Jesus! It was contagious. I have never been the same and have been active in the Renewal ever since.”

Today, Jesse is committed to keeping the Faith alive by speaking throughout the United States. He will be directing the upcoming National Charismatic Retreat at Malvern Retreat House, in Malvern, PA, June 27-29.

Attendees are in for a treat, because Jesse has the ability to make the sometimes-complex teachings of the Faith understandable with his straight-talk, Christ-centered approach. His message may be simple, but when delivered with his trademark energy and conviction, the audience is left with

the indelible impression that our Catholic Faith is something to be worn visibly and proudly, not kept hidden away (Matt 5: 14-16). The phrase “use it or lose it” takes on a whole new meaning in his hands.

He will be joined by Kathleen McCarthy, President of In His Sign Radio Network, a renowned preacher with healing gifts; and Fr. Robert Hilz, TOR, or "Fr. Pentecost," as some call him, a Franciscan Friar based in Loretto, PA, who has been active in the Charismatic renewal movement and healing ministry since his ordination in 1970. Fr. Bob and Kathleen McCarthy will offer a special healing service with anointing of the sick on Saturday night.

Young Adult Ministry Re-Energizes Malvern Retreat House

Young Adults throughout the region are excited to take part in Malvern Retreat House’s monthly Get-Togethers held on the fourth

Sunday of each month. During these Get-Togethers, men and women in their 20s and 30s participate in Mass, dinner, and an activity for fellowship, which provide spiritual growth and community-building as they become an important part of the Malvern Community. Fr. Peter Huynh, LC, himself a young adult, celebrates Mass at each Get-Together; he will also serve as the Retreat Director for the upcoming Young Adult Retreat, to be held May 30-31.

Malvern’s Young Adult Retreat - May 30-31 invites men and women in their 20s and 30s, single and married individuals, to strengthen their relationship with God and others. This year’s retreat “The New Evangelization—I Believe, and Therefore, Speak…” will feature inspiring talks by Fr. Peter, who will share with retreatants the meaning of the New Evangelization, provide ways to enhance their prayer life, and help them live the New Evangelization in their daily lives. ArtShow2014: a Record-Breaking Success

ArtShow2014 at Malvern

Retreat House was a record-breaking success this year, with over 1250 people attending and over 500 fine art pieces sold.

Malvern Retreat House President J a m e s A . Fitzsimmons said, “We could not be happier with the outcome of the show. This was the third year, and each year it has grown in terms of artists and attendees.” He added, “I’m told this has become one of the premier art shows in the Philadelphia Region. It really is a great event.”

The Complimentary Wine and Cheese Social on the evening of January 31 drew a record number of attendees who enjoyed the lovely reception and beautiful art displays magnificently showcased in the McShain-Horstmann Family Life Center.

Over 100 juried artists were accepted to showcase and sell their work in this year’s event, which ran from January 29 to February 2. These fine art pieces included paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glasswork, and jewelry. The special feature of ArtShow2014, Abstraction—What’s the Attraction? was on display throughout the entire five-day event, featuring works from 15 abstract artists.

“The Art Show Committee wanted a dynamic regional show with a special focus on non-representational work,” said Lynn DelPorte, Chair of ArtShow2014, “We asked the jury to consider unknowns and artists that would fit in our special focus exhibition of abstract art. We had a record-breaking year in sales, particularly in the abstract room. Kathleen has been involved in healing ministry for over four decades. She has the gift of storytelling that readily touches people’s hearts. Her willingness to share her faith and wisdom has established her as a dynamic instrument for proclaiming God's word to both believers and inactive Catholics of all ages.

Kathleen has experienced the death of a husband, loss of a house through fire, and personal and family illness. Through it all, her uncompromising love of God and faith in His love for her has been her source of strength in weakness and her light in darkness. As many have seen on her retreats over the years, she is a gifted speaker who shares with enthusiasm and motivates many hearts to experience the living God.

Fr. Bob recalls his first experience in the Charismatic movement: “My first assignment was teaching religion at Bishop Egan High School in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. My first week there, Brother Dominic took me to a Charismatic prayer meeting at Mary Joyce’s home, which really shocked me, because in the seminary we were taught that those ‘charismatic things’ were only needed at the beginning of the Church to help it get started (as in Acts of the Apostles.” Fr. Bob stayed with that little prayer group for 11 years, which, by 1975, had grown to 450, known as Great Shepherd Prayer Community, meeting in the

gym of Bishop Conwell High School. Several of that group also attended Friday prayer meetings at St. Boniface Church in Philadelphia under Brother Panky and Fr. Vincent Walsh.

Vatican officials note that with 600 Renewal Movements worldwide, the Charismatic Renewal has touched more people than any other of the movements all over the world.

What Can People Expect? Who Will Benefit from the Retreat? Says Jesse: “Charismatic retreats touch the affective side of our soul in such a way that it is life-changing. Christianity after all, involves the head and heart.”

The book of Acts is alive and well today. “I have seen the power of God at work in healing and delivering people from sin and evil spirits,” says Jesse.

“Come, let the Holy Spirit stir those graces within you that you have already received in Confirmation, when the Bishop laid hands on you!” Acts 2:1 says, When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. “Notice the Holy Spirit wants unity, the power comes when we are together!” says Jesse.

V In MemoriamWilliam t. Walsh, former Board member and CA Captain of the Holy Family Group, died on December 18, 2013. Bill was a 55-year retreatant with the Holy Family Group, and served Malvern Retreat House as a member of the Board of Directors from 1970-1979 and from 2000-2008. Known affectionately to his children and friends as “The Sarge,” Bill

is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Barbara, and 15 children. He was also the beloved “Papa” to 29 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bill joined Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1948, served as an Equitable agency manager in Philadelphia from 1955 until 1982, co-founded Walsh Associates with his daughter Stephanie and son Matthew in 1984, and remained active in the business until his death. Bill was a devout Catholic and a very active member and prolific fundraiser for numerous civic, religious, business and academic organizations, including Malvern Retreat House, where he was an enthusiastic proponent of Malvern’s Good Shepherd club, whose members have included Malvern Retreat House in their estate planning.

A daily communicant at 6:30 a.m. Mass for 50 years at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Bryn Mawr, Bill served as a Eucharistic Minister at the church in recent years.

Our condolences to the Walsh family and the Holy Family Group.

William H. Kelly, former Board member and CA Captain of the Mid-May Group from 1994-1998, passed away March 15, 2014. A 58-year retreatant, Bill served Malvern Retreat House as a member of the Board of Directors from 1983-1994. Bill was the beloved husband of Ruth Ann and the loving father of six children; he had 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He enjoyed a successful criminal justice career with the City of Philadelphia and subsequent tenure as professor of criminology at Temple University. Bill was active at St. Timothy’s Church and participated in many worthy charities of the Knights of Columbus as a third degree Knight. As a highly reputable criminologist, Bill was invited to become a member of the esteemed Vidocq society, a highly-selective, international collaborative of retired forensic/criminology experts dedicated to the resolution of previously classified “unsolvable” crimes. Bill brought to the Vidocq society a case on which he had labored for years—that of a murdered innocent who came to be known as “America’s Unknown Child.” Bill was determined that this child’s story would be told, and worked tirelessly for justice on the boy’s behalf.
