Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr., born in St. Louis on November l7, l878, graduated cum laude with an A.B. in chemistry from Harvard College in l900. He received an A.M. from Harvard University in l90l. Mallinckrodt wrote his master's thesis on "Dietary Studies with Harvard Students." In l948, Washington University in St. Louis awarded Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. an honorary doctorate of laws. After the completion of his master's degree, Mallinckrodt, Jr. returned to St. Louis to join the family business, the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. In 1911, he married Elizabeth Baker Elliot (1884-1973). They had three sons, Edward III (1912-1932), Henry Elliot (1914-1945), and George Elliot (1920-1968). In 1867, Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. (1845-1928) and his two brothers, Otto and Gustave, founded the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. The firm became the first to manufacture fine chemicals west of the Mississippi. Original products produced by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works included bromides, iodides, chloroform and spirits of nitrous of ether. Gustave Mallinckrodt died in 1877. Otto Mallinckrodt died in 1878. Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. incorporated Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in 1882, the same year it began production of photograph chemicals. By 1889, the company had expanded into offices in New York and New Jersey. In 1889 Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. joined with four other producers of liquid ammonia to form a separate company, the National Ammonia Company. He served as President of the new company until the DuPont Company bought it in 1928. Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. remained chairman of the board of Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, and directed its operation until his death in 1928. However, Mallinckrodt, Jr. also took an active role in the company. He served as director (1901-1965) and as Vice-President and Assistant Treasurer from 1918-1928. Under the guidance of father and son, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works opened branches in Philadelphia (1904) and in Canada (1913). It also

Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr., born in St. Louis on November l7, l878, graduated cum laude withan A.B. in chemistry from Harvard College in l900. He received an A.M. from HarvardUniversity in l90l. Mallinckrodt wrote his master's thesis on "Dietary Studies with HarvardStudents." In l948, Washington University in St. Louis awarded Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. anhonorary doctorate of laws.

After the completion of his master's degree, Mallinckrodt, Jr. returned to St. Louis to join thefamily business, the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. In 1911, he married Elizabeth BakerElliot (1884-1973). They had three sons, Edward III (1912-1932), Henry Elliot (1914-1945),and George Elliot (1920-1968).

In 1867, Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. (1845-1928) and his two brothers, Otto and Gustave,founded the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. The firm became the first to manufacture finechemicals west of the Mississippi. Original products produced by Mallinckrodt ChemicalWorks included bromides, iodides, chloroform and spirits of nitrous of ether. GustaveMallinckrodt died in 1877. Otto Mallinckrodt died in 1878.

In 1889 Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. joined with fourother producers of liquid ammonia to form a separate company, the National AmmoniaCompany. He served as President of the new company until the DuPont Company bought itin 1928.

Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. remained chairman of the board of Mallinckrodt Chemical Works,and directed its operation until his death in 1928. developed barium sulfate for x-ray diagnosis, morphine and codeine. In 1922, the companybegan to sell analytical reagent chemicals which it had earlier developed for its own use.From 1901-1928, Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. conducted research on the purification,preservation, and packaging of anesthetic ether. He continued this research through 1960, bythen he had sixteen patents, and had written several scientific papers on ether.

Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. succeeded his father as Chairman of the Board and Chief ExecutiveOfficer of the company in 1928. He retained the positions through 1965. During his tenure,sales for Mallinckrodt Chemical Works grew from $9 million to $47 million. EdwardMallinckrodt, Jr. also presided over the firm's expansion into other areas of manufacturingincluding the production and sales of pharmaceuticals and production of purified uranium foratomic energy. In 1942, at the urging of Dr. Arthur Holly Compton, a Nobel Laureate inPhysics, Mallinckrodt, Jr. agreed to produce the enriched uranium used in the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction at the University of Chicago. Mallinckrodt operated a uraniumplant for the Atomic Energy Commission at Weldon Springs, Missouri beginning in 1955.

Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. also gained renown as a philanthropist, humanitarian, andconservationist. He served on Washington University's Board of Trustees from 1928-1942. Inhis father's name, he endowed a Department of Pediatrics, a Department of Pharmacology,the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (1928), and a Professorship of Pathology. In 1947,Mallinckrodt, Jr. also established at Washington University, a Professorship ofAnesthesiology in memory of his son Henry Elliot Mallinckrodt.

At Harvard University, Mallinckrodt, Jr. continued a tradition of financial support begun byhis father in the 1920s. A $500,000 gift from Mallinckrodt, Sr. initiated the building of achemistry laboratory called the Edward Mallinckrodt Memorial Laboratory. EdwardMallinckrodt, Jr. also established the Edward Mallinckrodt III chair of anesthesiology in1936. Harvard Medical School also benefitted from Mallinckrodt endowments, most notably,the financial support given to Ward 4 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Laterrenamed Mallinckrodt Ward 4, the project devoted its resources to the study of diseases thatare difficult to diagnose and cure. Mallinckrodt, Jr. also donated funds to build an addition tothe Harvard Divinity School and revitalize its programs. As a conservationist, Mallinckrodt,Jr. helped to preserve a natural area in upper New York State and the Dinosaur NationalMonument in Colorado and Utah. The preservation of Tucker Prairie in Missouri alsoreceived funds from Mallinckrodt, Jr.

For his work in science, preservation, and education Edward Mallinckrodt received severalawards. These included: the 1952 Midwest Award given by the American Chemical Society,St. Louis Section; the Horace Marden Albright Medal for Scenic Preservation by theAmerican Scenic and Historic Preservation Society in 1961; and the 1962 Humanities Awardfrom the St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

Edward Mallinckrodt's social affiliations reflect his interest in astronomy, geology, ballistics,and conservation. Some of these affiliations include: charter membership in AmericanChemical Society; the Society of Chemical Industries; the Adirondack League Club; theAmerican Alpine Club; the Sierra Club; the Harvard Club in New York; and the Boone andCrockett Club.

In December 1965, Mallinckrodt, Jr. resigned as Chairman of the Board of MallinckrodtChemical Works. He served as Honorary Chairman until his death on January 19, 1967.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. papers document the Mallinckrodt family history; EdwardMallinckrodt, Jr.'s personal efforts in science, medicine, conservation, and education; hisactivities as Chairman of the Board of Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, and the corporateoperations in manufacturing and product development. The collection contains eight series:

1) Family History, 1798-19812) Personal Papers, 1898-19673) Contributions l921-l9664) Harvard University, l909-19665) Washington University, 1911-19666) Mallinckrodt Chemical Works Records, 1846-19807) Journals and Scrapbooks, 1878-19618) Photographs and Glass Slides, 1867-1959

The first series includes legal papers, biographies, correspondence, awards, familygenealogies, a cash ledger, an apprenticeship contract, a master's thesis, and social registerdocumenting Mallinckrodt family history. Extensive correspondence with Karl S. Catereflects Edward Mallinckrodt's efforts to help his German relatives recover from the affectsof World War II. The series also contains Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr.'s letter of resignation asChairman of the Board of Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in December 1965; notification ofhis honorary law doctorate from Washington University (1948), the Humanities Award hereceived from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat in 1963.

The personal papers series, divided into eight subseries, documents Edward Mallinckrodt'sinterest and activities in conservation, photography, travel, and ballistics. Mallinckrodt's workto help preserve natural areas in Upper State New York, Dinosaur National Monument inColorado and Utah, and Tucker Prairie in Missouri can be found in subseries 3. Subseries 5contains information on the legal and financial administration of the $2 million trust fund foreducational, humanitarian and philanthropic purposes left by Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr. in1928. Correspondence makes up the bulk of the material found in subseries 2. Brochures andpamphlets also can be found. The subseries on travel (8) contains maps, financial accountsand a manuscript on brown bears written by Edward Mallinckrodt in the 1920s; plusbrochures and correspondence. Subseries IV includes the Special Bullet project.

Series 3, 4, and 5 document the many groups, organizations and individuals who benefittedfrom Mallinckrodt's financial contributions. The Harvard and Washington University seriesreflect the largest endowments made from the trust fund and include those for chairs ofanesthesiology at both institutions, the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at WashingtonUniversity, the Mallinckrodt Memorial Laboratory at Harvard, Mallinckrodt "Ward 4" atMassachusetts General Hospital, and gifts to the Harvard Divinity School. Series 4 and 5 alsocontains more than information on endowments. They reflect Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr.'sactivities as a member of the Board of Trustees at Washington University (1928-1942), thevisiting committees for Chemistry and Geology at Harvard, the Harvard Board of Overseer

(1927-1933) and the Harvard Class of 1900. Included in the series are correspondence,brochures, memorial plans, publications, reports, and commencement programs.

The Mallinckrodt Chemical Works series are divided into two subseries, corporate recordsand product development. Subseries one traces the company's history from the late 1890s to1980s. Correspondence makes up most of the material in the corporate papers, but thesubseries also contains legal papers, annual reports, pamphlets, blueprints, publications,manuals, a company history, newsclippings and notices. Topics of particular interest includestrikes, lawsuits, the 1933 Century of Progress Exhibit, and labor relations. Subseries onecontains the material from Dr. Paul A. Krueger and includes the manuscript, A Company inTransition (1967), some historical highlights, and "A Tribute to Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr."

The Product Development subseries documents the company's efforts to produce its line ofchemicals, pharmaceuticals, and uranium. The subseries contains correspondence, reagentcatalogs, brochures, pamphlets, drawings, plans, regulations, surveys, processes, bulletins,price lists, product notices, and data books, with the production of ether as a primary topic.

Series 7 and 8 contains journals, scrapbooks, photographs, and glass slides. The journals andscrapbooks mostly document Edward Mallinckrodt's interest in chemistry and theMallinckrodt Chemical Works. Series VII includes journals with chemistry notes,correspondence, a day book, and ether notes. The scrapbooks include programs,correspondence, chemical formulas, and pamphlets. Series VIII has photos and glass slides ofthe Mallinckrodt family, of Edward Mallinckrodt's trips to Alaska and Yosemite Park, thefamily residence, the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, and still photos from the Ether filmdepicting the first operation using ether.
