Mali Empire
TSW 5 compare the empires of Mali and Songhai
In 1240 Mali formed on the southern area of Ghana
The Malinke people ruled the area and were ruled by Sundiata
Sundiata formed a powerful army and captured the capital of Ghana
Once they reestablished trade routes and expanded the empire
In 1076 the Almoravids attacked Ghana weaking the trade routes that went through them
Mali Empire

Timbuktu was where the desert and savannah met along the Niger River
As Islam spread Timbuktu started to become the center for Islamic studies
Sundiata supported the development of food crops, cotton farming and cotton weaving
Sundiata made the city of Timbuktu the center of trade and culture
Mansa Musa

Mansa Musa was a devoted Muslim but he let his people practice their own religions
In 1324 Mansa Musa started his pilgrimage to Mecca
On his pilgrimage he brought tons of slaves, camels and pounds of gold
Once Sundiata died the leaders continued to expand the most popular one was Mansa Musa
Mansa Musa rode on horse back and his entourage had gold and silk

They wanted to trade more with the Mali empire
More trade led to an increase in wealth
Mansa Musa also brought important Muslims back with him
Those who saw the pilgrimage caravan were impressed
They built a mosque in Timbuktu and scholars taught history, theology, and law in the city
Mali’s Decline

This internal fighting weakened the empire
Eventually Timbuktu was attacked and conquered
The neighboring Songhai people gradually gained control due to the internal fighting
When Mansa Musa died in 1332 people fought over who should take over
The Songhai took over Gao and Timbuktu greatly weakening their empire in

The Berbers eventually captured Timbuktu in 1433
By 1500 rebels and invaders had taken over most of Mali’s
Mali was no longer a strong empire
In the north the Berbers conquered much of Mali’s territory
Songhai Empire

In 1468 Muslim leaders in Timbuktu asked the Songhai king Sunni Ali to overthrow the Berbers
Sunni Ali drove out the Berbers and killed lots of people
Sunni Ali had the reputation of being a powerful and harsh ruler
1365 Songhai took over Gao but were unsuccessful in creating an empire
Sunni Ali went on to conquer neighboring lands and was powerful until he died in 1492
Askia Muhammed

Askia Muhammed wanted the throne and fought to take it from Sunni Ali’s son
When Askia Muhammed succeeded he took over control of the salt mines
Having this control caused the empire to expand even more
After Sunni Ali’s death his son was named successor
Expansion caused Askia to organized the government

Then he put a governor in charge of each province
Askia also appointed people as director of finance, agriculture, army and navy
He also set up a highly organized tax system
He started organization by dividing the land into provinces
Islam spread throughout the empire but in rural areas they still blended Islam with traditional beliefs
Songhai’s Decline

The rulers after him were weak and in 1580’s Morocco raided the salt mines
Finally in 1591 Morocco captured Timbuktu and Gao
Shortly after their capture the Songhai empire collapsed
Askia’s son removed him from the throne
During this time most West Africans were still living in kinship groups and life continued as before
