1.1 Meaning and Objective of Planning

Planning plays a great role in every field of life. As physical education and sports are concerned, planning also

plays a role in their harmonious development, which is impossible without a suitable programme of physical

education and sports. In fact, unachievable things can be achieved by involving in high quality programmes

in physical education and sports. But it needs proper planning in the field of physical education and sports.

We can get the maximum benefits from such programmes only when we make effective planning of sports

programme. In the schools across India, there is a lack of planning in the field of sports. For participation in

various tournaments, teams are selected at the 11th hour. Players are not given proper training. They hardly

get a few days to practice. They are not properly motivated towards sports. How can we expect their

harmonious development? In fact, a well-planned programme of physical education and sports is the need

of the hour for our schools.

Planning is a primary function of management. Proper plans set the basis for leadership, organisational

structure and evaluation. It is important to establish a sound planning foundation. Such an approach depends

on an organisation’s view of sports and its role in the community. This view or philosophy can often be

ascertained by examining the overall goals and purpose of the organisation.

Objectives of planning

(i) Planning enables to become proactive rather than reactive – to clarity organisational purposes and

direction.

(ii) It initiates and influences outcomes in favour of the organisation.

(iii) It exerts more control over its destiny – deciding where it wants to be in the future.

(iv) Adopt a more systematic approach to change and reduce resistance to change.

(v) It improves financial performance and use resources effectively.

(vi) It increases awareness of its operating environment (for example, competitors, government policy,

threats).
