Poland historically contained manylanguages, cultures and religions onits soil. The country had a particularlylarge Jewish population prior to WorldWar II, when the Nazi Holocaustcaused Polands Jewish population, estimated at 3 million be ore the war,to drop to just 300,000. The outcome othe war, particularly the westward shi to Polands borders to the area betweenthe Curzon Line and the Oder-Neisseline, coupled with post-war expulsiono minorities, signi cantly reduced thecountrys ethnic diversity.

Since the beginning o his career, orSabri, art is a way o li e, along withall its complexities. His belie in artmaking, especially paintings as aninherent social process that submergedhim in technical and materialadvancement through experiments.By this, increases his sensitivity inthe visual language and other artisticpossibilities.

Initially trained as a graphic designer,Sabri embarked on a li e long searchin his creative direction, and hadexperienced a very signi cant change

in his journey o sel -discovery. Whathe usually regarded as his secondaryinterests, i.e. graphic design and digitalprints, have signi cantly

    KERONCONG SERIES (REVISITED)SABRI IDRUS

contributed to his process in masteringhis own visual language. The elementso balance and surprises, discoveredthrough the exploration o contrasts,an aesthetic strategy he o ten usedwith his digital sketches merged into akind o extrasensory mechanism thatusually works e ciently or his laterdevelopment o works on canvas.

One thing that attracted Sabri were theexperiments in basic elements; playingaround with lines, space, volumesand colors. These basic elementswere always being put into tests in

his works; considering the notion thatmeaning within those elements arecomplex, slippery, multi aceted andindeterminate.

Parallel to this, Sabri also o tenuses paint as paint, colors as colorsand orms as orms. Most revealingabout his approach in creating hisprogressive body o works is the

ostering inscrutability or aestheticreasons. From his vantage point o viewon aesthetic obscurantism, missing orinde nable knowledge is seen as simplyanother aspect o his works inherentincompleteness; an open-endedapproach that allows him to fexiblytake them to another level or urtherdevelopment.

Sabris interests in those obscurantismlies in his details o creating marks andprints o in-between spaces, tensionvoids, jagged edges, the tension othe transition during the process omaking and moments that are rozenand captured within di erent strategicoperations. His anxiety in experiencingsurprises during his process holds bothexcitement and also danger. This risk

had cost him a lot in the production ohis works, but at the same time makingSabri being more ready and opentowards the inevitable consequences. Itis a bittersweet com ort in his tendencyin liberating painting rom clichnarrative and orced meanings.

Art+Tecture(s) are photographic worksthat communicate the architectural

representation o beauty - holisticallyand mystically. The dynamism andprovocative moment o the architecturalpieces are captured in a dynamicperspective convention. Spatialinteraction, either visible or not, asRudolph Arnheim says: the world oimages does not simply imprint itsel

upon a aith ully sensitive organ.Rather, in looking at an object, we tryto reach out on it. We move throughspace around us, go out to distantplaces where things are ound, touchthem, catch them, scan their sur aces, trace their borders, measure their linesand so on. It is an eminently active
