Striving to Relieve Poverty. Activity Report 2013-2014 Malawi Relief Fund is a UK Registered Charity established to relieve poverty in Malawi. Over the past few years we have developed projects and programmes thas have made a real impact to the lives of thousands of children and families across Malawi. Our programmes have been designed to assist the poor, educate the children and develop sustainability programmes that improve opportunities and the life chances of local people. This report provides a snapshot of our activities and programmes we have delivered. Thank You This has been an eventful year with new exciting projects aimed at relieving poverty and supporting the less privileged. The local people continue to struggle to survive. Our aim has been to try to improve life chances by equipping them with education and skills to increase their opportunities to earn a livelihood. We wish to thank all our donors for their tremendous support without which we would not be able to deliver any of these projects. Improving Access to Education01 //////// Creating Teachers for Tomorrow

Malawi has an acute shortage of Primary School Teachers. In partnership with Mariam Girls Teacher Training College. MRF has sponsored 80 students to train as teachers covering all their costs.

As part of the programme the Students are posted in Government schools for training and once qualified 95% of the students will secure employment with government schools.

This professional development programme will empower local women and improve the life chances and will allow them to sustain their families.

02 //////// Chipoka Education Centre

MRF have developed the centre and now provides Islamic Edcuation and secular education to 120 children including boarding for 90 students. MRF are currently building staff quarters and urgently require Lillah funds to complete this project

03 //////// Educate a Child:

Whilst primary education in Malawi is free, many children are unable to a�ord the fees for secondary education marginalising and excluding many children from receiving basic education.

MRF is committed to ensuring as many children as possible are able to ful�l their potential and receive a basic education. Our sponsorship programme pays for a students fees, where necessary accommodation or travel and basic resources. For less than £3.50 per week we can educate a child and improve their life chances.

We also sponsor students to go to University and complete the studies either in Malawi or at universities in other countries.

04 //////// Early Years – NurseryOur nursery provides education to 3-5 year old children preparing them for school life. At the nursery we also provide them with a meal, which for many can be there only meal of the day.

07 //////// New Masjid and Maqtab Program in Remote Areas

Build a Masjid for £8,000or a Maqtab for £3,500

05//////// Shukran Orphanage

Malawi has over 1 Million Orphans.

Shukran Orphanage is our flagship project where we provide a caring and supportive living environment for upto 60 children.

The orphange aims to give the children a good start in life and an oppurtunity to develop and reach their full potential

06//////// Tawbah/Repentance NikahProgram

There is a misconception among the Malawian Muslim community that onceyou make your Nikah Islamically at the Mosque, the marriage does not last long and that Islamic Marriages are very expensive. As a result many do not perform the Nikah.The Tawbah Nikah Programme sponsored by Malawi Relief Fund UK (MRF) was one of the first such programme where local Scholars raised awareness about the importance of Nikah. In all 168 couple completed the Tawbah and Nikah ceremony. MRF supported the couples with their Dowry and also provided a Waleema meal for the family.

08 //////// Women’s Development Program:

Skills and Livelihood Project is another very exciting project aimed at support-ing women in particular widows. Through a structured programme over 7 months, the women learn new skills such as tailoring aimed at making them self-su�cent. On completion the women are provided with a sewing machine and a starter pack so they can start to earn a living. We are currently supporting 75 women.

09 //////// Winter Cropping:

To ensure sustainability of communities living in disaster prone areas MRF launched the Winter cropping programme.

Winter Cropping is a practice of culti-vating another crop in the dry season (April to August) taking advantage of the residual moisture within the lowland areas.

Small holders are provided with farm-ers packs including fertiliser, seeds and support, to plant another crop to promote sustainability and self-reliance the program produced excellent results

Improving Access to Clean Water12 //////// Access to Clean WaterMRF is comitted to improving access to clean water and reduce ill health and avoidable health.1 in 5 of the population still has no access to clean water. You can sponsor a water well for just £400.

Malawi has one of the highest levels of preventable blindness. It is estimated that 10,000 people in Malawi become blind every years due to cataract.

Only 1 in 7 people requiring catatract surgery receive them. You can restore ones vision for just £30

Health and Well-Being

11 //////// Winter Warmth ProgrammeMRF distributed blankets to thousands of children, elderly and local people. MRF also distributed blankets to 4 hospitals.
