James 1:27

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our

God and Father is this: to look after orphans

and widows in their distress, and to keep

oneself unstained by the world.

Many years ago, people just like you began to have a burden for Malawi, Africa. The overwhelming

needs of the widows and orphans were heartbreaking, yet the tremendous hunger for Jesus was

humbling and exciting.

A ministry was born to care for these vulnerable women and children, and teams continued to travel

to Malawi to share the gospel to the local villages. Over time, the need was realized to build a full-scale

orphan care facility, creating not only a central place to care for the widows and orphans, but a hub for

unlimited ministry opportunities.

Esther’s House has the capacity to house up to 100 residential children and currently has programs

in place to meet the needs of many other orphans and widows living in the surrounding community.

The ministry of Esther’s House continues to expand through visionary projects such as medical clinics,

educational opportunities, vocational training and agricultural sustainability.

The opportunity to participate in a Team Journey to Malawi is available many times each year through

our various partnership churches. Team Journeys are usually 12 days in length and comprised of

varying numbers of adults of all ages. Through a series of training meetings, team members are

educated in the Malawian culture, taught evangelism and discipleship methods, and given special

projects to help meet the physical needs of those they are going to serve. Teams focus on areas

such as medical through the hosting of area clinics, construction through building new structures

or repairing existing facilities, and sharing the gospel through hut to hut evangelism, planting new

churches and village VBS/discipleship classes.

Having no previous experience with missions, I was unprepared when I felt God call me to go to Malawi to serve. I went willingly, yet was filled with anxiety and uncertainty, unable to imagine what impact a stay-at-home mother of four could possibly make on the mission field. God worked through me in a mighty way during my time in Africa—and for the first time I discovered a new heart and passion for something much greater than myself. God has ignited a passion in me not only for the wonderful people in Malawi but also for daily involvement in mission work here at home.

The Short-Term Journey is available for those individuals wanting to give anywhere from 1-6 months

of volunteer service to the people of Malawi. Short-Term applicants are evaluated to match skills and

interests with current ministry needs in areas such as education, working with children, construction,

journalism/photography, bookkeeping, hygiene/nutrition and discipleship. Short-Term servants are

trained stateside and given a personalized ministry agenda, but will work under and alongside the

local missionaries to provide leadership and direction while serving in Malawi.

The Extended-Stay Journey is a mix between the Team Journey and the Short-Term Journey. It is

designed for those who desire to participate in a Team Journey experience but then wish to stay and

extend their service for a longer period of time. Extended-Stay applicants participate fully as part of

the team but are then provided with a personalized ministry agenda for the duration of their stay.

The Long-Term Journey is for those individuals, couples, or families who feel called to give a part of

their lives in full-time missionary service. Long-Term service is considered to be anything longer than

six months, but is typically measured in years. Long-Term ministry needs exist in areas like teaching,

administration, management, construction, medical, and evangelism/discipleship.

One of the goals of Pure Mission is to allow the Body of Christ to come together to meet some of the

world’s greatest needs, a direct fulfillment of Titus 3:14 which says “And our people must also learn

to devote themselves to good works for causes of urgent need, so that they will not be unfruitful”.

Partnership churches can get involved with this incredible ministry by hosting Team Journeys,

adopting projects and raising awareness. Pure Mission will provide all Partnership churches with

training materials and a customized agenda for journeys or information and resources specific

to the desired area of support.

After graduating from college, I was extremely excited about serving God in Malawi for 6 months. I had never been involved in missions, and I was nervous about how God would be able to use me while I was there. The time that I spent in Malawi has been the most rewarding of my life—I was extremely blessed by the Malawian culture and by the opportunity to serve their community and the children of Esther’s House through this ministry. I am excited about how God has given me a new heart and passion for missions work and I know that this is just the beginning!

The cost of a journey to Malawi varies with the type of journey, the length of stay, and fluctuations in

airline prices. Typically, the one-time travel cost is the large bulk of the expense, with the exception

of the Long-Term stay. Team, Short-Term and Extended-Stay Journeys are all-inclusive, covering food,

lodging, vehicular transportation, security, insurance and most ministry supply costs.

Because of the considerable travel cost required to get to and from Malawi, securing the support of

others through the donation of funds is a major part of the preparation work for most missionary

journeys. Training will be provided on the specifics of how to successfully raise the necessary funds

using the simple yet effective approach of online fundraising and support letters.
