Malaria Figures
• 3.3 billion people at risk of malaria in 2006• 1.2 billion at high risk (>1 case/1000
population) mainly in the WHO African (49%) and South East Asia Region (37%)
• Estimated 247 million episodes of malaria in 2006
• 80% of cases in Africa are from 13 countries• Estimated 881,000 malaria deaths in 2006
Malaria Control
Targets of 80% coverage for 4 key interventions:1) Insecticide treated bed nets (ITNs) for people at risk2) Appropriate anti-malarial drugs for patients with
probable and confirmed malaria3) Indoor residual spraying of insecticide for
households at risk4) Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy
UNDP Statement on Malaria
• ‘Malaria control efforts are paying off, but additional effort is needed.’
TuberculosisTarget 6c: Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of
malaria and other major diseases
• 6.9 Incidence, prevalence and death rates associated with tuberculosis
• 6.10 Proportion of tuberculosis cases detected and cured under directly observed treatment short course (DOTS)

Geographical distribution of
HIV-positive TB cases, 2006
For each country or region, the number of incident TB cases arising in people with HIV is shown as a percentage of the global total of such cases. AFR* is all countries in the WHO African Region except those shown separately; AMR* excludes Brazil; EUR* excludes the Russian Federation; SEAR* excludes India.
UNDP Statements on Tuberculosis
• The incidence of tuberculosis is leveling off globally, but the number of new cases is still rising
• Reaching global targets for tuberculosis control will require accelerated progress, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and the CIS
Tanzania – progress MDG6
• HIV cases detected 1990: 5.5 ; 2000: 9.4; 2005: 6.8; 2015: <5.5 On track
• Number of malaria cases and incidences (cases per 100,000) 2000: 500,000; 2005: 65,745; 2015:18,062 On track
• Number of tuberculosis cases and incidences (cases per 100,000)1990:188; 2005: 479 (No further information)
Issues intrinsic to MDG 6 and prospects
Difficulties/Problems
1. Inappropriate targets eg ART roll out2. Inappropriate indicators3. Lack of cohesion and focus within and
between communicable disease programmes eg how to communicate and report results.
4. Lack of links and cohesion with other MDGs. (some with MDG1)
