IntroductionMalaikaKidsTanzaniaaimstohelpsomeofthe2millionorphansinTanzania.VolunteersintheUnitedKingdom,theNetherlandsandtheUSAsupportMalaikaKidsTanzania.Asnosalariesarepaidtothesevolunteers,morethan95%offundsraisedgodirectlytoTanzania.Ouraimistoimprovetheeducationandhealthofasmanymostvulnerableandorphanedchildrenaswecanandpreparethemforaself-supportingfuture.WesupportalocalinitiativerunbyaTanzanian,NajmaManji,whowasstrivingtohelplocalorphanslongbeforewebecameinvolved.Togetherwithher,wedevelopedandimplementedamodelforallthoseunderprivilegedchildrenbroughttousbythelocalWelfareoffice.Wegivethesechildrena‘family’andaneducation.Forthisweruntwoprograms:onetheRelativesSupportProgramwherewesupportpoorrelativestotakecareoftheiryoungfamilymemberbroughttousbyWelfare,andanotherforchildrenwithoutrelativeswhocansupportthem.Thechildrenwithoutrelativesarewelcomedintoourpurpose-builtChildren’sVillage,wheretheyliveinsmallfamilyhouses,lookedafterbylovinghousemothers.Wherepossible,werunourorganisationinasustainableway,usingsolarenergy,pumpingourowndrinkingwater,growingourownvegetables,andcollectingrainwatertoirrigatethem.Weraisefundslocallybysellingsomecrops,offeringplacesinournurseryclassforfeesandappealingforlocaldonors.Wecurrentlyhelp163children(68intheChildren’sVillage(CVM),78intheRelativesSupportProgramme(RSP)and17intheReceptionHome(RH)).Thisisanetincreaseofsixchildrenduring2018andthemovementinnumbersin2018isshownbelow: Children’sVillage RelativesSupport ReceptionHome Totals

TheMalaikaKidsconcept SomeorphanagesinAfrica,IndiaandSoutheastAsiahavebeenrightlycondemnedfortakingchildrenawayfromtheirverypoorfamiliesandhaveusedthechildrentoraisemoneyforthepeoplerunningtheorphanage.
Wedotheopposite.WhenthelocalWelfareofficebringsachildtousaskingforourhelp,ourfirstactionistoseektofindafamilymembertolookafterthechild.Wetalktothechildforcluesandtakethemtoareastheymayremember;weuselocaltelevisiontoadvertiseinthe‘lostchildren’slot.Sometimes,achildhasbecomelostandcannotfindtheirwayhome.
Ifweknowofsomeonewhoneedshelptocareforachild(typicallyagrandmother),ourfirstpriorityistoprovidemonthlyfoodpackages,medicalinsuranceandeducationsupportsothatthefamilyunitcanstaytogether.
OnlyifweandtheWelfareauthoritiesagreethatnobodycanbefoundtosupportthechild,dowetransferthechildtotheChildren’sVillage.Ouraimistolookafterallofourchildrenandeducatethemappropriatelyfortheirability,sothattheycansurviveinthetroubledTanzanianjobmarket.
CommunicationwithstakeholdersCommunicationwithstakeholderstakesplacethroughourwebsite,MailChimpnewsletter,regularcontactswithourmajorandregulardonorsandreportstodonorsonspecificprojects.
Achievementsin2018During2017andcontinuingin2018weradicallyuppedourgameateverystageoftheeducationalprocessforourchildren,aswefeltmorethanbeforethatagoodeducationimprovesthechancesforourchildrenforabetter“life”afterMalaikaKids.Startingatthepre-primarylevelbutalsoatprimary,secondaryandfurthereducationweinvestedmoreinbetterschoolscarefullyselectedforeachofourchildren.NowmostofouryoungprimaryschoolchildrencanspeakEnglishquitewell.AfterbeingtaughtEnglishatournurseryschoolandtwoyearsatthenearbynewprimaryschoolLifewaylight,wehavechildrenagednineandyoungerwhocanholdaconversationinEnglish.Itmaynotyetbesophisticated(forexample“whatisyourfavouritevegetable?”),buttheyareconfidentinbothspeakingandcomprehension.SpeakingEnglishisenormouslyimportantinTanzania.SecondaryeducationislargelycarriedoutinEnglish,sothosewhofallbehindinlanguageatprimaryschooltendtofallfurtherbehindorfailatsecondaryschool.AndemploymentprospectsincreaseconsiderableifapplicantsspeakgoodEnglish.

FortheMalaikaKidsorganisationsintheNetherlands,theUSandtheUKtheextrafocusoneducationmeantagreateremphasisonfundraisingforthispurpose.WearepleasedtohavefoundanumberofdonorsinHollandwillingtosupportthiscause.
AsneartheChildren’sVillagetherearenopossibilitiestofollowprofessionalcourses,anumberofourteenagechildrenhadtomovefromourChildren’sVillagetoDaresSalaam.MostofthesechildrenwenttoliveinourReceptionHome,therebyunfortunatelyseriouslyreducingthecapacityofourlocalorganisationinTanzaniaforintakeofneworphans.TheearliermentionedexpansionofourfootprintinDaresSalaamwasthereforehighontheagenda.
WewouldalsoliketogivespecificthankstoallthedonorswhoreactedtoourappealtoraisemoneytoenableustotakeinmorechildreninourVillage.
Andofcourse,wethankthecompanies,serviceclubs,schoolsandtheothergroupsofindividualswhohelpedusbyorganisingspecificfundraisingevents.

2018-AYearofSolidImprovementInvestmentsintheyearspriorto2018arenowpayingoff.Mostofthestaffhavebeeninpostforseveralyears.Theexperiencegainedisbearingfruit.Inaddition,thestaffhavereceivedeffectivetraining.Inparticular,in2018everyoneattendedaprestigioustwo-weektrainingcourseatDaresSalaamUniversityfocusingonchilddevelopment. Thecourseparticularlyreferencedtheissuesaroundchildrenincareandinvolvedstafffromseveralotherorphanages.ThiswasanewandexcitingexperienceforMalaikaKidsstaff.Asonepersonwhojoinedthecoursesomewhatlatersaid,'Iseemycolleaguescomebackchanged'.Itwasalsogreattohearthat,againandagain,MalaikaKidswasheldupasamodelofbestpractice.
Issuesthatstruckthemasbeingimportant'takeaways'fromthecourseincluded:
! theimportanceoffullengagementwiththechildsothathe/shefeelsconfidenttoexpressanxieties
! thecrucialrolesofnurtureandaffection! theneedtodevelopthepotentialtalentofeachofthechildren! optionsfordiscipliningchildrenlogically,avoidingseverity! greaterawarenessofsafetyhazards(fire,electricity,etc.).
Asked,whatcanMalaikaKidsdoevenbetter?Severalgroupsrespondedthattheywouldbenefitfrommoreregulartraining,andalsothat,whereappropriate,thechildrenshouldhaveasayinthedecisionsthataffectthem.
Wealsoheldin-housetrainingonsafeguarding,ledbyAlisonClewlowandFrancescaEdwardsfromMalaikaKidsUK.Thisfocusedongroupdiscussionsondifficultsafeguardingscenarios,andhowtotacklethem.Thelevelofconsensusandunderstandingborewitnesstothecohesivenessoftheorganisation.

AlsoourVillageManagerJamesKalingaandShezanManji,ourofficemanagerattendedseminarsinSouthAfricaandUgandaorganisedbyTheELMAFoundation.Ithelpedthemtogainabetterunderstandingoftheimportantrequirementsforchildren’swelfare(suchashealthandnutrition),identifyingdifferentchallengesandwaystoalleviatethem,developingariskmanagementplan,etc.
Children’sVillageMkuranga
IllustratinglifeatCVM,anoldergirlcomments:“I'monholidayfromschoolatthemoment.Wehaveasix-weekbreakbetweenourtwoterms.Ihavestudyingtodobutalsolotsofsparetime,soIamhelpingMadamTumainiinthepre-primaryclass.Ofcourse,IstillcallherMadamasIwasinherclasswhenIwasalittlegirlandcamefirsttotheChildren'sVillage,tenyearsago.BeforethatIwasinKinondoniwithMamaNajma.ItisstrangetobeworkingalongsidemyteacherandIlovehelpingthechildren.I'mevenearningabitofextrapocketmoney.I'm16now.Igetupatabout6.00am,thesameasatschoolandhelpgetsomeoftheyoungerchildrenreadybecausetheyareatprimaryschoolandtheydon'tbreakupuntilnextFriday.SomeofthemgotoMkurangaPrimary,whichiswhereIwentwhenIhadgrowntoobigforMadamTumaini'sclass.Inmyyeartherewere238childrenintwoclasses.SomeoftheteacherswereveryhelpfulespeciallyMadamMbwambowhotaughtusEnglish.IlovedKiswahililessonsbecauseweweretaughttheproperKiswahililanguageratherthantheversionwespeak.Someoftheteachersbeatthechildrentoomuch.ItwasalongwalkfromtheVillagetoschoolandsometimesMalaikakidswerebeatenbecausetheywerelate.Iwasnotbeaten.
IpassedmyStandard7examwellandchosetogotoJohntheBaptistSchool.Whenwegotosecondaryschool,weboardsowestaythereexceptfortheholidays.Ihadverygoodfriendsatthatschool,butIdidnotlearnwellbecausetheteacherskeptchangingandIwas

unhappy.MamaNajmaandFrancescaEdwardscametovisitandwhentheysawhowsadIwas,theyarrangedformetogoStMatthew'swheresomeotherMalaikakidswerestudying.AtStMatthew'swhenwegetup,wecleanthedormitory,whichIsharewith9othergirls,andthenstartlessonsat7.00am.At10.00amwehavea45-minutebreakandsometeathenmoreclassesuntil2.00pm.Lunchisthesameeveryday:ugali,beansandvegetables.It'sabitboring!After45minuteswegobacktoclassforlessonsuntil5.00pmwhenwereturntoourdormitoryandwashourclothes.Supperisrice,beansandvegetableseverydayexceptSaturday,whenwehavemeat.MyfavouritesubjectsareCommerce,Geography,History,Kiswahili,EnglishandCivics.IfindMathsandPhysicshard.TheteachersarehelpfulbutgofastandIfindithardtounderstand.IfIask,EmanuelhelpsmewhenIambackintheVillage.AtStMatthew'sIamdoingbetterandmostlytheteachersareeasiertounderstand.Ihavenotfoundanygoodfriendsthereyet,partlybecausesomeofthegirlshavebadhabitsandIdon'tlikethat.IhavetwoyearstoprepareforOlevelsandthenanothertwoyearsbeforeAlevels.ThenIreallywanttogotouniversityinDaresSalaamorDodoma.
Rightnow,duringtheholidaysIlikebeingathomedoingmyhomework,readingandhelpingwiththecooking.IlikecookingandIamgoodatit!Ilovehelpingmyyoungerbrothersandsisters.Ireadthemstoriesandhelpthemwiththeirschoolworksotheycandowellandgotosecondaryschool.EstherismyMamaandIlikeherverymuchandshelovesmesomuch.
IntheVillagetheeveningsaredifferent.Weplaysportat5.00pmeveryday.ThisweekwehadaspecialeveningtowelcomeourvisitorsfromBritainandlotsofusperformedTanzaniansinging,dancinganddrumming.Somenightsthelibraryisopenandwego
andchoosebookstoread.Onceaweekwehaveafilmnight.Theotherevening,Ihad26oftheyoungerchildrenaroundmeplayinggamesonthesportsfield.TheydidasItoldthem,soIknowIcouldbeateacher.”

EducationEducationisattheheartofeverythingwedoforourchildren.Wewantthemtogrowuptobewell-balancedadults,abletofendforthemselvesintheworkplacewithoutthenormalfamilybackgroundandnetworkofsupportthatotherchildrenmighthave.
Wehadthreeveryyoungchildrenin2018andthishasnowrisentofive.Duringtheday,theyaretakencareofinourcrèche.Laterintheday,theyreturntotheirMamas,whointurninvolvealloftheirfamilyincaringfortheyoungones–especiallytheolderboys!

MadamTumainirunsthein-housenursery.Thisgivesourchildrenanexcellentstartwhentheygotoprimaryschool.Wetypicallyhavearound10Malaikachildrenintheclass,andin2018afurthersixexternalchildrenpaidfeestoattend,helpingtopaytheteacher’ssalary.Thisnumberofexternalchildrenhasnowrisentonine.
WecontinuetopayafeeforouryoungerprimarychildrentoattendLifewaylight–aschoolrightonourdoorstepthatteacheschildreninEnglish,withclassesof30orless.Wehad21attendeesin2018.Theyseemtoenjoyschoolandtheirmarksaresystematicallyhigherthanthechildrenwesenttothelocalprimaryschool.AndtheirEnglishisprettygood!
OurolderchildrenattendMkurangaPrimarySchool(19in2018).Theclasssizesareenormous,andtheteachinghasbeenunderstandablyweak.OurremedialclassesintheVillagehavehelpedalittle,butmostofthechildrendonothavestellarmarksandtheirEnglishispoor.Goingforward,wehopetohelptheschoolwithextraclassroomsand,wherepossible,relymoreheavilyonLifewaylight.

Wealsohavetwochildrenwithseverementalhealthproblems,whoattendaspecialschoolovernightMondaytoThursday.
Wehave13childrenwhoattendsecondaryschoolonaboardingbasis.TheyarefulltimeintheVillageforamonthinsummer(December)andagaininwinter(June).IntheVillagetheytypicallyworkonthelandoronmaintenancefrom7amto10am,whenthetemperaturesstarttosoar.Thentheymayhavesupervisedaccesstoacomputer,willhelpmotherswiththeyoungerones,andreadbooksfromthelibrary.
ReceptionHome
ManyofourolderchildrenhavereturnedtotheReceptionHomeinDaresSalaaminordertocompletefurthertraining.In2018,wehadboysstudyingwelding,motormechanicsandelectricalengineering.GirlswerestudyingSocialWork,sewingandhotelmanagement.Oneboyisdoingaresidentialcoursetobecomeaclinicalmedicalofficer,andonegirlis

undertakingaresidentialMontessoriteachingcourse.Findinggoodjobsisthenextchallenge!WecontinuetoreceivechildrenintotheReceptionHome.AllthisactivityledustobuildanextensiontotheReceptionHomein2018,takingthenumberofbedsfrom14to20.
RelativesSupportProgram
ThepurposeofourRelativesSupportProgrammeistotrytokeepchildrenwithafamilyunit,evenifthefamilyisdesperatelypoor.Anexampleisthisblindwoman,who,withhelpfromthegrandmother,triestolookafterfourchildrenathome.Weprovideamonthlyfoodpackage,fortnightlyvegetables,medicalinsuranceandeducationalsupport–allaimedattheaffectedchild(thoughweknowthefamiliesshare).Whereappropriate,wepushhardforbirthcontrolinordertominimisethenumberofchildrenindistress.
Wealwayscheckthatthechildisgoingtoschool,andnotworkingathomeforthefamily.

CommunityBasedReintegrationprojectACommunityBasedReintegrationpilotprojectstartedafewyearsagowiththehelpoftheDutchNGOWildeGanzenandwascompletedin2018.TheaimofthisprogramwastotrytomakeMalaikaKidsTanzanialessdependentondonationsfromabroad.Wegave6caregiversoforphanedchildrenintheRelativesSupportProgramaloanwithwhichtheystartedorexpandedtheirbusinesses.OurorganisationinTanzaniaismonitoringtheprogressandgivesadviceifandwhenneeded.Thepreliminaryevaluationshowsthattheprojecthasbeensuccessful.MalaikaKidsTanzaniacannowstopprovidingthesecaregiverswithmonthlysupportandexpandtheRelativeSupportProgrambysupportingnewcaregivers.Weareconsideringexpandingtheprojectbyprovidingmoreloanstoothercaregiversourselvesorbylookingforalocalmicro-financingpartnertohelp.
Agriculture
Uptonow,ouragriculturaleffortshavebeenthwartedbyacombinationofpoorsoil,veryhotweather,irregularrain,locustsandourowninexperience.Wenowsuccessfullycultivategreenvegetablesallyearround–animportantcontributiontothechildren’sdiet.

Wehaveplantedagroveofpapayatrees.Theseareinindividual‘pots’andaredrip-fedwatereverymorningandnight.Inadditiontogreensandpapaya,wehaveplanteddrought-resistantpineapplesandcassavaonafewacresoflandthat,withthehelpofWingsofSupport,hasbeenrecentlyreclaimedfromforest.Overtime,wehopewemayraisefundsfromcashcropsales–butwearenotquitethereyet!
OtherDevelopmentsin2018

Wecontinuetolookforadoptionandlong-termfosteringoptionsforourchildren.Andwhenourchildrenare‘placed’(uptonow,threeintotal)wedoourownfollowuptoensurethatthechildisbeingproperlylookedafter-asinthispicture,whereateacherinatownabout20milesawayhasadoptedoneofourboys.
FundraisinginTanzaniahasbeensuccessful.InthecentreofthispictureisarepresentativeoftheIrishEmbassy,whichgaveussupportin2018.Werepeatedoursuccessinwinningafurtherthreeyearsofsupportfromamajorphilanthropyorganisation,theELMAFoundation.BookAidalsodelivered500children’sbookstohelpreplenishtheVillagelibrary.
WeincreasedthecapacityofourReceptionHomeinDaresSalaamby9beds.

successfullookafterothersintheirfamily;itisourstrongbeliefthatinthistraditionliesthelong-termsustainabilityofMalaikaKids.Wehopethatacohortofourgrown-upMalaikaKidswillcontributetothechildrenwhofollowthemandtreatthemastheirownfamily.Inthelastfewyearsourannualrevenueshavefluctuatedsignificantly,whereastheactivitiesofMalaikaKidsinTanzaniacontinuetogrowandthereforeneedincreasingfinancialsupportandlongtermcommittedfunding.Inordertobeabletocontinuethissupport,MalaikaKidsNetherlands,MalaikaKidsUKandMalaikaKidsUSAagreedthatitisnecessarytocreateacontinuityreserveoutoftheannualnetresultsofthethreefundraisingfoundations.Itwasagreedthatweshouldaimtobuildthecombinedcontinuityreserve(i.e.thesumtotalinthebooksofthethreefundraisingfoundations)atthreetimesthebudgetedcostoftheTanzanianoperations.In2018MalaikaKidsUKandMalaikaKidsNetherlandscontributedtothecontinuityreserveagainsothatitnowstandsat€606,451(2017:€573,160).Thecontinuityreservenowamountstojustovertwotimestheoperationalbudget2019ofMalaikaKidsTanzania(TZS715,000,000,approx.€280,000).ThelevelofthecontinuityreservewillbereviewedannuallyinthelightofdevelopmentsinTanzaniasuchasthenumberofchildreninourcareandlocaleconomicfactors.
FinancialControls Wesetanannualbudgetfortheyearahead,separatedintomonthlyrecurringitems-food,salaries,fuel,etc.andanallowancefor‘incidentals’,whichmustbespecificallyrequestedandagreed.Thesemaybenewshoes,schoolbags,repairtothevanoradayouttothezoo.Suchitemsareagreedandpaidonlyafterscrutinyanddiscussiontoensuretheexpenditureisnecessaryandbestvalueformoneyisobtained.
ApaymentoftheagreedamountismadetoMalaikaKidsTanzania’sbankinDaresSalaameachmonth,andallexpenditureinTanzaniaisreceiptedandrecordedbyourlocaladministrativestaff.ThebooksandbankaccountsinTanzaniaarereviewedonamonthlybasisbytheInternationalTreasurer,ensuringthegreatestpossiblefinancialdisciplineandaccuracy.
ConclusionWearepleasedwhichwhatweachievedin2018butareawareofthechallengesaheadinfurtherdevelopingtheorganizationandhelpingmoreorphanedandvulnerablechildren.Long-termfundraisingandattractingayoungergenerationofTrusteestocontinuetheworkwestartedaretwoessentialchallengestobeovercome.
Outlookfor2019Oneofourbiggestchallengesfor2019is…jobs!Wehavehelpedtoeducateourchildrenasbestwecan,butthejobmarketinTanzaniaisveryweakforyoungpeople.Gettingourcropofnewlyqualifiedchildrenintoadequatelypaidemploymentisnotgoingtobeaneasytask.

14yearsafterweopenedourdoorsinTanzania,alargenumberofourchildrenwillbeleavingourcareinthecomingyears.ForourorganisationinTanzaniaitisachallengetoensureallofthemwillfindsuitablejobs.Asaresultofchildrenleavingourcare,thereisnowsomesparecapacityinourChildren’sVillage,whichcanbeusedtoaccommodatetheneedy.
InclosecooperationwithSocialWelfarewewilltrytofillthiscapacity.However,oftenchildrenbroughttousbySocialWelfareareonlywithusforashorttime.Throughtheirandournetworkweare(luckily)oftenabletofindtheirparentsor(distant)family.Theyarethenreunitedandleaveourcarewithinafewmonths.In2018thetotalnumberofchildreninourcaregrewby6.Wewelcomed31newchildrenand25leftourcare.For13childrenwefoundnewfosterhomes;12childrenlefttheMalaikaKidsprogram.
Althoughwearepleasedwithwhathasonceagainbeenachievedin2018,weneedtoincreaseoureffortstogetayoungergenerationofsupportersinterestedtojoinMalaikaKidsandhelpusensurelong-termcontinuityofourorganisationandtoachievesteadyandsolidprogress,buildingonwhathasalreadybeenachieved.Stabilityisamajorissueforourkids.Almostallarecarryingmajorpsychologicalscarsfromtheirearlychildhood,andittakestimetoworkthesethrough.
