Beijing hoped “relevant countries will not hype up the tensions in theregion”, Lu said.

Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force Commander Hiromi Hamano toldreporters that Wednesday’s joint training exercise — which he termed ahumanitarian and disaster response drill — was a success.

The Philippine Navy said the drill was a search and rescue exercise. And aspokeswoman for Philippine President Benigno Aquino said this week’s activi-ties “should not be taken as an affront” to any other nation.

A spokeswoman for the Japanese defence department said its Orion wasnot used to spy over the South China Sea.

“The purpose of this exercise is to enhance the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force’s capabilities in humanitarian support and disaster relief, not toconduct surveillance activities,” she said.

Philippine Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said there has been an“increasing convergence” of the two nations’ security concerns as he stressedthe need for a visiting forces agreement with Japan that would pave the wayfor larger exercises.

“The maritime challenges both our countries face place both of us almost inthe same boat, with a common neighbour causing alarm and causing concernfor both of us,” Gazmin said in a speech in Manila.

Gazmin cited China’s declaration of an air defence identification zone in theEast China Sea and its major reclamation work on South China Sea reefsclaimed by the Philippines.

MANILA: The Philippines said Thursday itwants to acquire defence equipment fromJapan, as the two allies strengthen defenceties in the face of China’s increasingassertiveness in the South China Sea.

Manila was particularly keen on the P-3COrion surveillance plane flown by Japanesepilots during recent joint exercises over dis-puted waters also claimed by Beijing, adefence ministry spokesman said.

“Yes, we are interested in getting a P-3,”Peter Paul Galvez told reporters.

“Natural ly, we are look ing i f i t wi l l

become an excess defence article, then wecan get it at a very low price,” he addedwithout giving further details.

Cash-strapped Manila has been strength-ening military ties with better-equippedallies such as Japan and the US as tensionshave f lared with regional superpowerChina.

Beijing is locked in disputes with severalneighbours over its claims to almost theentire South China Sea, where it has startedreclaiming land, as well as with Japan overislands in the East China Sea.

The Philippines has conducted navalexercises with Japan and is now pushing foran agreement to allow large-scale joint mili-tary exercises similar to those it holds annu-ally with the US.

It has also asked a United Nations tribu-nal to reject China’s claims to most of theSea, a move angrily rejected by Beijingwhich says the world body has no authorityin the matter.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino vis-ited Japan earlier this month where he dis-cussed closer defence relations, including

the transfer of military equipment for hiscountry’s poorly equipped armed forces.

The US-designed P-3 plane, which wasfirst released in the early-1960s, servesmainly as a maritime patrol aircraft.

Galvez also said the Philippines was alsointerested in Huey helicopters, adding thesewould be easy to “absorb” as the militaryalready has several of the aircraft.

MANILA: Philippine airlines will no longer bebanned from flying into Europe, aviationauthorities said Thursday, after the EuropeanUnion removed all remaining Philippine carri-ers from its safety blacklist.

The EU list, which has included Philippineairlines since 2010, bars from operating inEuropean airspace any airlines it deemsunable to meet international safety stan-dards, or whose civil aviation authorities can-not provide the necessary safety oversight.

“All airlines from the Philippines, bannedsince 2010, have been released from the (airsafety) list and are therefore allowed to oper-ate in the European airspace,” a statementfrom the EU office in Brussels said.

The EU lifted the safety ban on flag carrierPhilippine Airlines (PAL) in July 2013, and lastyear also released Cebu Pacific, the country’slargest airline.

The latest decision lifts restrictions on theseven remaining Philippine carriers, said EricApolonio, a spokesman for the Philippine civilaviation authority, now allowing budget andsmaller airlines to fly to Europe.

Among the seven carriers are the

Philippine units of AirAsia Berhad, the pio-neer of budget flights in Asia, the aviationauthority said.

The decision comes after a five-man EUsafety assessment team gave a positivereview of the airlines following a series ofinspections in April.

“This is truly breaking news since it is thefirst time that the entire aviation sector of onecountry is removed from the European AirSafety List,” said Lubomir Frebort, the EUcharge d’affaires in the Philippines.

While the seven carriers largely serviceonly domestic and Asian routes, Apoloniosaid the EU decision will still benefit them.

Previously, European insurance companieswould not cover people who flew on airlineson the EU Air Safety List, he said.

“European tourists will be encouraged touse low-cost carriers in the Philippines now,”boosting the number of visitors who willwant to fly around the archipelago, he toldAFP.

PAL now flies to London and is planning toadd more European destinations, while CebuPacific is applying to fly to Italy.—AFP

MANILA: Politics dictated the Aquino admin-istration’s allocation of resources, and InteriorSecretary Mar Roxas, the presumptive admin-istration presidential candidate, has been thebeneficiary of this practice, according to VicePresident Jejomar Binay.

After quitting the Aquino Cabinet anddeclaring himself leader of the opposition,Binay has taken his antiadministration act onthe road, criticizing the government for mak-ing more people poor and not doing enoughto help them.

Binay’s visit on Friday to Navotas City, hometown of his erstwhile spokesperson andclose ally Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, was hisfirst public event since attacking the Aquinoadministration during his speech at theCoconut Palace on Wednesday.

Throughout his Navotas visit, Binay wasrepeatedly introduced as the country’s nextPresident. In turn, he told the residents thatwhen he becomes President, Tiangco will bethe House Speaker.

Going around Navotas, Binay was at hisbest “noncampaigning” mode, directing hisantiadministration attacks at Roxas, his poten-tial rival for the presidency.

He claimed that funds that should have

gone to the housing agencies he headed wereinstead funneled into Roxas’ Department ofthe Interior and Local Government, which hesaid did not even have the mandate to buildhouses.

“This is what’s happening in the govern-ment today. Politics dictates who would begiven the bigger budget, especially their owncandidates,” he told reporters. —Inquirer.net v

KUWAIT: Beyond expectation occurred in the seventhweek of the Philippine Bowling Association in Kuwait(PBAK) 2nd Season Team Tournament 2015 eliminationround when puny teams decimated the high andmighty teams both in the outer and inner circle of the“magic 8”. Giant killer Mangaf Strikers surprised the fiz-zling Cozmo 2602-2447, LEAF stopped top rank TravelClub 2715-2652, Tsamba Strikers ejected UAE Exchange2778-2662 from the elite group and the strugglingSwooping Eagles took advantage of theintricateBowlersmate 2930-2507. The other rated teams whoposted victory were All Star Strikers, Thunder Dragonsand the Original Pin Killers.

The Swooping Eagles demean the puzzledBowlersmate in their 3-game scheduled match up thatcaused the latter standing slide from second to sixthposition 961-814/ 961-853/ 983-840. To overcome theabsence of the prolific bowlers Jess Tolentino gambled

by using his two lady bowlers with huge handicap butluck is remote and lost the game with very low output.Eagles top scorers were Riz Roque (573), Danny Solis(543), John Caldwell (526) assisted by Alonzo Bush andJocelyn Ty while Bowlersmate bowlers were YousefKhalil, Fe Ferrer, Josie Lorino and Aji Varghese.
