Bringing Clean Water to India
By Advances
M idea has established its first overseas water quality
testing laboratory in India. Midea’s Water Heating Division held
the opening ceremony of the laboratory at 9:30 a.m. on April 26
in Bawal, Haryana.
New water purifiers from Carrier-Midea India (CMI) are
expected to start selling in August this year. CMI General Man-
ager Krishan Sachdev attended the ceremony, saying it was an-
other leap forward for the joint venture.
With India’s market capacity for water heaters at 7 million
units, the joint venture expects to achieve a market share of 10
percent
within
five
years.
Research
will be
done
into how
to tailor
the products to the needs of the Indian consumer.
Providing clean water to its population of 1.3 billion is
one of the
biggest
challenges
India faces.
No short-
age of tour-
ists has
learned this
the hard
way.
With
over 100
quality is-
sues detected in local groundwater, CMI will bring its water up
to the standard required by the Indian National Accreditation
Laboratory. In its cooperation with Carrier, Midea will do what
it does best – improve the lives of millions of people.

E urovent, Europe's industry association for indoor
climate technology, last week tested and validated 18 models of
Midea's variable refrigerant
flow (VRF range). These in-
cluded the 2-pipe heat pump,
the 3-pipe heat recovery and
mini VRF, certified for their
cooling and heating perfor-
mance, energy conservation,
and noiselessness.
Certification by the Brus-
sels-based industry association reassures customers of excep-
tional quality and high performance and demonstrates that
Midea’s VRF range meets efficiency requirements.
Peter Guan, Vice President of Midea Commercial Air
Conditioning (CAC) said: "Besides residential air conditioners,
Midea has extended its range of
Eurovent certified products
from chillers to fan coils units,
and now also our VRF range.
This underlines our approach of
providing comprehensive solu-
tions."
Eurovent is Europe’s Industry

Partnership with ZigBee Goes up Another
Notch By MIP
T he ZigBee Alliance, a non-profit association
of companies creating, maintaining and delivering open,
global standards for the low-power wireless Internet of
Things (IoT), this week announced that Midea Group
will be accepting a seat on its Board of Directors. This
follows Midea accepting an invitation to become a mem-
ber in January and in March upgrading its ZigBee mem-
bership to that of ―promoter.‖
"Midea is dedicated to creating innovative products
and open smart life service operating platforms that sup-
port a comfortable lifestyle," said Dr. Ethan Xue,
Midea’s Director of Product Strategy and Operations.
"ZigBee Alliance technologies are the leading low-
power wireless IoT communications technologies world-
wide with millions of deployed devices across every conceiva-
ble application space, including appliances. Participating in the
Alliance at the Promoter and Board levels allows us to invest
further in our goals by working with other major brand lead-
ers and technologists to design and deliver around the prom-
ise of the Internet of Things, which is the future of consumer
products," Xue added.
Midea Group joins Comcast Cable, Itron Inc., The Kroger
Co., Landis+Gyr, Legrand Group, NXP Semiconductors,
Philips, Schneider Electric, Silicon Labs, SmartThings, Texas
Instruments and Wulian on the ZigBee Alliance Board of Direc-
tors.
Tobin Richardson, ZigBee Alliance president and CEO
praised the upgrade. "As an extremely influential brand that
understands what consumers want and expect in
connected appliances and home systems, Midea
adds to the leadership strength of our Board and
the momentum of the overall Alliance," said Rich-
ardson.
John E. Osborne II, chairman of the board for the
ZigBee Alliance and general manager of The
Kroger Co. R&D expects big things of the IoT
―smart home‖ industry. ―Midea's expertise in
product design and the Alliance's leadership in the
wireless IoT movement makes for good synergy
and opportunity. We're especially pleased to have
Midea join our Board of Directors," said Osborne.
Founded in 2001, ZigBee simplifies wireless prod-
uct integration and reduces the time it takes prod-
ucts to get to market, while reducing costs and
risks for product manufacturers looking to intro-
duce energy-efficient wireless control into their
products.

Welcoming Those Responsible for Rapid
Russia Growth
F ifteen distributors of Midea-brand products in Russia
were taken on a tour of Midea’s global headquarters and Kitchen
Appliances Division in mid-May. They were invited for being
representatives of the top three Midea-brand distributors and
leaders in e-commerce.
A report on China Central Television on May 23 claimed
that Midea sells 12.5 products around the world every second.
However, many people are unaware of the company’s long his-
tory and vast product range. This tour helped to strengthen ties
and tap potential.
They were given a tour of the exhibition center, history
museum, the innovation center and factory. Outstanding distrib-
utors were also presented with certificates.
About Midea Orient
The tour was organized by Midea Orient, a wholly-owned
subsidiary based in Moscow. Founded in late 2011, the subsidi-
ary started by selling products of the Kitchen Appliances Divi-
sion and has since spread to other products.
In December 2013, Midea-brand microwaves had a mar-
ket share in Russia of less than 1 percent. Last year it broke into
the top three with a market share of 7.6 percent and achieved
17.2 percent in the first quarter of 2016 (ranking second). It has
an excellent chance of becoming number one by 2018.

ry product our consumers use. We are happy for our collabora-
tion with Eros Group whose vision is in line with Midea’s strate-
gy to expand its distribution network to offer better services to
local consumers in Middle East, including the UAE and some
other GCC countries,‖ said Justin Liu, Business Development

syntax, has remained substantially unchanged since the 7th
century. In other ways, however, modern forms of style, word
sequence, and phraseology are simpler and more flexible than
in classical Arabic. If visiting Egypt on a business trip, it is
advisable to have one side of your business card translated into
Arabic.
3. Dining
It is advisable to dress conservatively and remove your
shoes before dining. If dining at someone’s home, compliment
the host on the house.
Wait for the host or hostess to tell you where to sit and
eat with the right hand only. It is considered a sincere compli-
ment to take second helpings. Leave a small amount of food
on your plate when you have finished eating. Otherwise they
will keep filling it up for you!
4. Interpersonal relations
As with anywhere, who you know is more important
than what you know. Egyptians prefer to do business with
those they know and respect, therefore expect to spend time
cultivating a personal relationship before business is conduct-
ed.
Unlike other cultures (e.g. Japan), direct eye contact is
considered a sign of honesty and sincerity, so be prepared for
disconcertingly intense stares. Expect to be offered coffee or
tea whenever you meet someone, as this demonstrates hospi-
tality. Even if you do not take a sip, always accept the bever-
age. Declining the offer is viewed as rejecting the person.
5. Meetings
Appointments are necessary and should be made ahead
of time. Confirm the meeting one week in advance, either in
writing or by telephone. Reconfirm again a day or two before
the meeting.
Business meetings generally start after prolonged inquir-
ies about health, family, etc. If you send an agenda and presen-
tation materials in advance of the meeting, send both an Eng-
A s the location of one of Midea’s overseas factories
and an increasingly business-friendly environment, Egypt is a
country very much worth learning about. Here are ten things
you need to know if
visiting the North
African country:
1. Islam
Islam is prac-
tised by the majority
of Egyptians and
governs their person-
al, political, economic and legal lives. Friday is the Muslim holy
day. Everything is closed. Many companies also close on Thurs-
day, making the weekend Thursday and Friday.
During the holy month of Ramadan all Muslims must fast
from dawn to dusk and are only permitted to work six hours
per day. Fasting includes no eating, drinking, smoking, or chew-
ing gum. Expatriates are allowed to do those things in private.
At sunset, families and friends gather to celebrate the breaking
of the fast (iftar).
2. Arabic
For al-
most 13
centuries
Arabic
has been
the writ-
ten and
spoken
language
of Egypt.
Before
the Arab
invasion in AD 639, Coptic, the language descended from an-
cient Egyptian, was the language of both religious and everyday
life; by the 12th century, however, it had been totally replaced
by Arabic.

8. Food
Some consider Koshari - a mixture of rice, lentils, and
macaroni - to be the national dish. Ful Medames is also one of
the most popular dishes. Fava bean is also used in making
falafel, which originated in Egypt and spread to other parts of
the Middle East.
9. The Ancients
Egypt has a complex relationship with its ancient culture.
On one hand it is proud of the homegrown nature of the civi-
lization and grateful for the tourist dollars it brings in. On the
other, Egypt is a predominantly conservative Arab society and
some segments frown upon the pagan nature of the pharaohs.
When radical Salafi party Al-Noor won 20% of the vote
in 2011, Egyptian Islamists campaigned to erase pre-Islamic
history, even wanting to cover the pyramids with wax or de-
stroy them outright. Unlike in, say, China or Greece, your host
country’s ancient civilization may not be the most polite topic
of conversation.
10. National sport
Though
basketball,
golf, tennis
and swimming
are all very
popular,
Egypt’s na-
tional sport is
probably soc-
cer. It is the
most successful national team in Africa, having won the Africa
Cup of Nations on seven occasions.
In 1934 it became the first African and Middle Eastern
team to appear in the FIFA World Cup and its last appearance
at the World Cup was in 1990 when it drew 1-1 with a Holland
team containing Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank
Rijkaard.
lish and Egyptian Arabic translation.
6. Negotiations
Expect a fair amount of haggling. Egyptians seldom see
an offer as final. Egyptians do not like confrontation Decisions
are reached after great deliberation.
If the government is involved, discussions will take even
longer since approval must often be given by the ministers of
several departments. Business moves at a slow pace. The socie-
ty is extremely bureaucratic and it may take several visits to
accomplish a simple task.. Egyptians abhor saying 'no' so if they
do not respond, it usually is a negative sign.
7. Gift giving
If you are
invited to an
Egyptian's home
for dinner, bring
good quality
chocolates, sweets
or pastries to the
hostess. Do not
give flowers, which
are usually reserved for weddings or the ill, unless you know
that the hosts would appreciate them.
A small gift for the children shows affection. Always give
gifts with the right hand or both hands if the gift is heavy. Gifts
are not opened when received.

of affection with a member of the opposite sex. Do not touch
the top of anyone’s head or their shoulder. You should pass
items with both hands though nothing must be passed over
anybody’s head.
It is considered aggressive to stand with your hands on
your hips or with your arms crossed. It is also a conservative
culture in which shorts and other revealing clothing are only
worn at the beach.
4. Business etiquette
Initial meetings are normally just used for getting to
know each other. Appointments are required and should be
made several weeks in advance.
In meeting and bidding farewell, handshakes are the
norm between members of the same sex. Silence is also com-
mon in meetings where someone disagrees with another but
remains quiet so as to not cause a loss of face.
5. Vietnamese
About 60 percent of modern Vietnamese words are of
Chinese origin. Many basic words, like geographical terms,
were adopted from the millennia-old languages of the Red
River and Ma River deltas.
In Vietnamese, each syllable has one of six tones, which
completely alters the meaning of the word, and one, two or
three of 11 distinct vowel sounds. In the 17th century, French,
Portuguese and Spanish Catholic missionaries, aided by Viet-
namese preachers, developed a new writing system as a means
of spreading the gospel to a wider audience.
After winning independence from France - the Roman-
ized version of the Vietnamese writing system - quốc ngữ
(script of the national language) – was recognized by the Viet-
namese government as the nation’s official writing system.
This has greatly facilitated dialogue between Vietnam and the
West.
6. Economy
Since the mid-1980s, through the Đổi Mới reform peri-
W ith an economy that is growing steadily through
trying times for much of the world, a rich and ancient culture,
and some of the world’s most beautiful scenery, Vietnam is a
useful country to know about.
1. Philosophies
Vietnamese philosophy includes both traditional Confu-
cianism and Vi-
etnamese local
religious tradi-
tions. Later in-
fluences include
those brought by
French colonial-
ists and Marx-
ism.
Confucianism
became the
dominant philosophy during the bắc thuộc period (111BC-
c.938AD) when Chinese rule was established in Vietnam. The
presence of Confucianism is very much evident in the approach
toward hierarchies, family, marriage and seniority in today’s
society.
Vietnamese philosophers include Lê Quý Đôn (1726-
1784), Cao Xuân Huy (1900-1983), and Lương Kim Định
(1914-1997). Their influences came from Buddhism, Taoism,
and Catholicism.
2. Face
As with other cultures that have been influenced by Con-
fucianism, the concept of face is as important as it is complicat-
ed. Someone can be given face by complimenting them for
their hospitality or business acumen. Accusing someone of
poor performance or reprimanding them publicly will lead to a
loss of face.
3. Personal space
There is much that travellers to Vietnam need to know
about personal space and social taboos. Avoid public displays

10. Manmade
beauty
Vietnam is at
the forefront of the
conversation be-
tween East and West
and the ancient
world and the mod-
ern. It has numerous
architectural sites
that typify this.
Hoi An is an old
town along the Thu
Bon River. Its architecture combines traditional Vietnamese
designs and techniques with those from nearby countries,
mostly China
and Japan. It
boasts family
cult houses,
dedicated to
the worship
of ancestors
and commu-
nity houses,
used for
worship of
ancient sages.

spots worth seeing include the stone church in Nha Trang
City, Ham Rong Gardens in Lao Cai Province, and The Huc
Bridge in Hanoi.
od, Vietnam has made a shift from a highly centralized planned
economy to a socialist-oriented market economy which uses
both directive and indicative planning.
Bloomberg noted in January
that while the world’s larg-
est emerging economies
including Russia and Brazil
falter, Vietnam’s steady eco-
nomic growth at near 7
percent this year will make it
among the fastest-growing
markets in the world.
7. Pho
Pho is the national dish of Vietnam and is sold every-
where from exclusive restaurants to street corners where grand-
mothers set up makeshift kitchens. For this version, all of the
components—noodles, beef brisket broth, herbs, —are served
separately.
8. Music
Vietnam has a number of folk music traditions: Chèo is a
form of generally satirical musical theater; Quan họ is an im-
provised a capella style of singing largely used for courting ritu-
als. Ca trù is sung mostly by females and it is thought to have
originated in the imperial palace where women would entertain
powerful men.
Since the 1980s, Vietnamese pop music has been influ-
enced by that of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.
Vietnam’s most popular singers include Hồ Quỳnh Hương
