You might know a domain name simply as the Web address or “.COM.” Whensomeone types a domain name into a Web browser, the requested Web page opens. For example, the domain name www.yourpersonaldomainname.com locates anInternet address for “yourpersonaldomainname.com.”

TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS

A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the part of the domain name located to the right of thedot (“.”). The most common TLD in use today is .COM, closely followed by .NET and.ORG. There are several other popular top-level domains, including .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME,.WS and .MOBI.

Top-level domains have certain guidelines attached, but are generally available to anyregistrant, anywhere in the world. Exceptions are restricted TLDs (rTLDs)—whichinclude .BIZ and .NAME—that require the registrant to represent a certain type ofentity, or to belong to a certain community. For example, the .NAME TLD is availablestrictly to individuals.

A top-level domain can also be of geographic significance and only available toregistrants in the locale defined by the TLD. These are called country-code TLDs(ccTLDs) and include such top-level domains as .US (United States), .EU (Europe), .TV (Tuvalu), .CC (Cocos Islands), .DE (Germany), .JP (Japan), .BE (Belgium), .UK (United Kingdom), .NZ (New Zealand) and .CN (China).

Tip: If the .COM you want to register is already taken, you can check to see if it’s available with an alternate TLD. You may also want to consider registering all or some of the more common TLDs of the same domain name in order to protect your brand, your site or yourself from someone else with your brand orname in mind.

To find out which TLDs we currently offer, or for more information on registeringdomain names, please visit our Web site at www.GoDaddy.com. Visit today and youcan get a 1-year, new domain name, transfer or renewal for only $1.99* with each and every new, non-domain product you buy—no limit!

* Plus ICANN® fee of 20 cents per domain name year. Certain TLDs only.

Once you complete registration, how you use your new domain name is up to you. Here are a few of the most common options:

Get a personalized email address. An email account can be a great way to put your domain to use, and gives you a personalized address that friends, family and business contacts will easily remember and associate directly with you.

Put your Web site on the Internet. If your site design is complete, you will need to acquire a hosting account to upload your site on the Internet. If you have not built your Web site, there are several easy and affordable options for you to quickly put together a professional, quality site (see Chapter 2—Building a Web Site).

Launch your own blog. Establish your online presence by creating ablog. All Go Daddy domain names come with free, easy-to use blogging tools to let you take advantage of this popular format, without additional software or experience.

Forward domain names that are similar to your primary domain name. The more domain names you register, the better. You’ll prevent others from registering a similar domain name to yours. What to do with all these names? Forward them to your main domain name!

Turn your parked domain into cash! It’s easy with CashParking. Whether you have one domain or a growing portfolio, CashParking can turn those domains into a cash generator! Each time someone clicks on advertising that generates revenue on your parked pages, you share in the revenue.

Sell a domain name for a profit. Domain names can be a great investment. Visit The Go Daddy Domain Name Aftermarket®(www.TDNAM.com) when the time comes to buy, sell or find a previously registered domain name.

Wait. Maybe you haven’t decided what to do with your new domain name. There’s no rush. You can leave it parked with Go Daddy for the length of your registration.

TO TRANSFER A DOMAIN NAME

You may transfer your domain name from your current registrar to Go Daddy at any time (within the restrictions set by ICANN® and your current registrar). Note: ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or transferred within the last 60 days.

Go Daddy offers a fast, automated, risk-free domain transfer thanks to an innovative Rapid Transfer System™ that spares you steps and saves you time (transfers are often completed in five days or less, but may take up to seven days to complete).

HOSTING YOUR DOMAIN NAME

Hosting (also known as Web site hosting or Web hosting) is the business of housing, serving and maintaining files for one or more Web sites, and providingInternet access (bandwidth). In a sense, you rent space on a computer to hold yourWeb site. Your host, the computer where your Web site files are stored, assigns anaddress (DNS) for your files to your domain name so that anyone can find your Website on the Internet by typing in your domain name.

Go Daddy is an excellent choice for Web hosting, providing customers with world-classhosting and servers. Unlike many of its competitors, Go Daddy owns, operates andsupports the hosting plans and servers it provides, down to the very last cable and disk. With Go Daddy, you’ll get fast, dependable hosting and servers, 24/7 live support, unbeatable prices and and free access to our exclusive Go Daddy Hosting Connection.

While our shared hosting plans are ideal for most individuals and small businesses, our dedicated servers and virtual dedicated servers are perfect for hosting multiple traffic-intensive Web sites on one server, running enterprise or gamingapplications, or operating development environments. You have the option of purchasing a preconfigured dedicated or virtual dedicated server plan or the flexibility to build your own server.

In order to choose the right hosting or server plan, you’ll need to consider a few things:

How was your Web site designed? How much traffic or how many visitors do you expect monthly? How large is your site? What Web applications will you need? How many sites do you plan to host?

Visit www.GoDaddy.com/Hosting to see which Go Daddy Hosting or Server Plan works best for you.

WEB DESIGN BASICS

There are principles fundamental to Web design that you should keep in mind whencreating your Web site: Design for the lowest common denominator. Rememberthat not every user—not even the majority of users—have the fastest computer on themarket with a 19- or 21-inch monitor. When designing your Web site, accommodatean 800x600-pixel view and an average processor speed. In other words, don’t use alot of large, high-resolution graphics on a page that defaults to a 1600x1200-pixelview. Ideally, your visitors should be able to see the whole page, or at least themajority of the page, without having to scroll.

In addition, you don’t want your visitors waiting five minutes for your graphics to loadbefore they can view the page. Try to keep your use of graphics or images to aminimum and optimize file sizes as much as possible. Include images only wherethey support the content of your page. Also, try not to include too many images on asingle page. If your pages take too long to load, it will discourage your visitors andthey may move on to a different Web site.

And remember that it iseasier on the eyes to read dark text on a light background than light text on a darkbackground. Ideally, it is best to have black text on a white background; the morecontrast the better. It is also important to know that Sans Serif fonts are easier toread on a computer screen than Serif fonts are. (Serif fonts are typefaces that have“tails” on the letters, like Times New Roman or Courier. Sans Serif fonts are typefacesthat do not have “tails” like Arial or Verdana.) On a computer screen, Serif fontsusually appear blurry, especially in smaller font sizes. Choose one Sans Serif font typeand stick with it throughout your site.

Organization and navigation. Arrange your pages and links in a logical flow soyour visitors can make their way around your site without getting lost or having tosearch for additional information. Navigational menus help visitors jump quickly frompage to page or find their way back to a page they previously viewed. One importantrule: Don’t move the location of your navigation on each page, forcing the visitor tolook for it.

Give your visitors relevant content. Visitors come to your site looking for contentthey believe they will find on your site. If your domain name has the word “cats” in itand your content is all about kitchen appliances, your visitors will not return.

Try to ensure that each page of your site has a specific point or main idea, and thenstick to that point. If you have additional content that is related, link to that content asa related page. Keep your page content short and to the point.

Getting potential prospects and customers to visit your Web site may prove to be oneof the most challenging undertakings when entering the online world. Many factorsinfluence your site’s visibility and how quickly and easily visitors can locate it.Understanding search engines and search result rankings are important keys togetting your Web site listed higher in search results. Keep reading for more ideas onhow to increase your Web site traffic.

DOMAIN NAME VARIATIONS

You should consider registering any variations of your domain name(s) that yourvisitors may possibly mistype in their browser when searching for your site—the cost isminimal, but the return on investment can be tremendous.

Start by registering the most common alternatives to your chosen domain name:such as misspellings, alternate spellings or other names your business may beknown as. These are simple variations or misspellings of your domain name, such as“yourepersonaldomainname.com” or “yourpersonaldomanname.com.”

While you can’t anticipate all of the possible alternatives, starting with the simple andobvious alternatives can save your customers hours trying to figure out why they can’tlocate your site. You can forward these variations of your domain name to your actualWeb site so that your customers or visitors who mistype your domain name will stillfind themselves at your Web site.

BRAND IDENTITY

Ever heard the story about the Web entrepreneur who built a booming business onhis .COM, only to find a competitor making money off his identity by registering the.NET version of the entrepreneur’s domain name? Unfortunately, it’s not just a story.

This technique of buying up domains that are similar to existing business domainnames, then demanding extraordinary fees to sell them, is called cyber-squatting.Although there are laws to protect those with a legitimate claim to a particulardomain name, it can be cheaper to buy the domain name than to sue thecybersquatter.

To avoid this, many companies register multiple domain names containing theirprimary name. So in addition to registering yourpersonaldomainname.COM, they alsoregister yourpersonaldomainname.INFO, yourpersonaldomainname.BIZ,yourpersonaldomainname.MOBI and so on. By taking related domain names out ofcirculation, they can be sure no one else will be able to infringe on their online brand. And, of course, keep these domain names for their own future use.

GETTING TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEB SITE

Driving visitors to your site is one of the greatest, and most important, challenges on theWeb. We’ve already discussed some effective and affordable ways to increase traffic andmarket your Web site, Go Daddy’s Business and Protected Registrations (see page 5).But perhaps the most powerful tool for boosting your site’s traffic is making sure yoursite is optimized for search engines. Your Web site may be perfect, but if it’s not designedand organized in a way that makes sense to search engines, it may never be seen.

Most Web site traffic and online purchases come from search engines or directories likeGoogle®, Yahoo!®or MSN®. Internet users enter keywords on these search engines inorder to receive a listing of Web sites most relevant to their keywords. Although akeyword may return thousands of results, most Internet users will only browse throughthe first 10, maybe 20 entries in the results and may actually visit less than five of thepages listed before searching for a new keyword. ADVERTISING ONLINE

Although search engine optimization can go a long way toward promoting a Website, the only way to guarantee a high search engine ranking is to join a pay-per-click advertising program. While pay-per-click can be a costly solution, Web visibilityis guaranteed for those willing to pay for it. Pay-per-click is usually based onadvertiser bidding, where the advertisers bid on the highest ranking for a givensearch phrase. The highest bidder gains the highest ranking; the second-highestbidder gains the second-highest ranking; and so on. The advertisers are then billedthe bid amount each time a visitor clicks to the site via the paid-inclusionprovider’s search engine listing.

Although bidding is the most common way to determine the per-click cost, some pay-per-click providers charge a flat click-through fee. Pay-per click programs are offeredby search engines like Google®, Yahoo® and Windows Live™ Search, all of whichprovide listings for a number of leading search engines, directories and Web portals. In search engines, pay-per-click listings generally show up either as SponsoredListings or as regular search results. In some cases, the listing will mention the per-click cost to the advertiser.

Traffic Blazer introduces users to the top paid placement search engines like Google,Yahoo, & Windows Live Search. Joining these programs will add your business to thesearch results of the Internet’s top search engines, directories and portals.

SUCCESS STORY

Known as “The Animal Whisperer™, ” Colleen Paige found her calling, love and passion for animals at an early age. At 18, she was faced with eviction and the taskof having 24 hours to find a home for “Spike,” her handsome German Shepherd.Colleen vowed to do whatever she could to prevent this from ever happening again toanyone—dog or human.

Colleen now spreads her message as an international animal trainer/behaviorist, TVpersonality and author. And while her love and support for animals is legendary, itwas support of another kind that brought her to Go Daddy.

“Because of a problem with a credit card showing fraudulent charges, I had to blockmy card,” says Colleen.

Go Daddy then made several attempts to bill the card, with no success, and wasforced to take Colleen’s site off the Internet.

“If I had used any other company I’d have been waiting forever on hold,” says Colleen,“only to then wait a week or more for my site to come back up. I panicked becausemy site is my business...my life! Before I even hung up the phone with Go Daddy, however, the site was back up and running. I was floored!”

A Copyright is a form of protection provided to authors of “original works ofauthorship”, both published and unpublished. Copyright protects the form ofexpression rather than the subject of the expression.

Federal copyright registrations are issued by the U.S. Copyright Office. They give thecopyright owner exclusive rights to reproduce the copyrighted work, to preparederivative works, to distribute copies of the work and to perform and display the work publicly.

A Trademark is a word, name, symbol or device which indicates the source of aproduct and distinguishes it from the products of others. A service mark identifiesand distinguishes the source of a service instead of a product. Trademarks are issuedby the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. DEVIOUS DOMAIN NAMES

Whether you’re new to domain names or a seasoned veteran, you should consider registering any under-handed versions of your domain name(s) to protect your personal and professional identity (harmful domain name alternativescan include, but are not limited to, “ihateyourpersonaldomainname” or“yourpersonaldomainnamesucks”).

While you can’t anticipate all the possible alternatives, starting with the simpleremoval of the more obvious domain names can save you legal hassles and frustration in the event a third party attempts to use these names in a way that is harmful to you or your business.

In the event that someone else does own a harmful version of your domainname, consider backordering that name and getting it off the market the second itbecomes available.

(The only exceptions would be if the price the registry charges increased, or if you took advantage of a limited-time, special price. If the registry increases our cost, yours will go up by no more than the same percentage ours did.)

2. Risk-free, money-back guarantee transfers.A domain transfer occasionally fails. This is usually due to your former registrar trying to keep your money, even though that registrar is legally required to comply with your transfer request. With Go Daddy, you’re protected by a Rapid Transfer System™ that saves time and eliminates errors, extracting critical information automatically. You no longer need to find it and type it yourself. And there’s a Transfer Concierge team trained, dedicated and available to you 24/7. Lastly, Go Daddy transfers are absolutely risk free and fully refundable. If your transfer to Go Daddy fails for any reason, you will be notified and issued a refund. Guaranteed.

3. More free, value-added services with every domain.Go Daddy is proud to have you as a customer and wants you to get the most out of your domain ownership. With every domain purchase, you receive all the following, FREE: Personalized Email; Hosting with Web Site Builder; Quick Blogcast; Photo Album; Change of Registrant; Parked or “For Sale” Page; Domain Locking; Status Alerts; Domain Forwarding; Domain Masking; Total DNS Control and 100 Email Forwards.

9. Fierce protection of your personal information.Go Daddy works hard to prevent your data from being “mined.” And unlike some of our competitors who will happily sell your information to anyone for a price, Go Daddy will never under any circumstance make it available to third parties, unless legally required to do so. (Please do understand, though, that information in the Whois database is public domain. Go Daddy does everything possible to prevent screen access to it, but under certain circumstances, it can be obtained.)

10. Unique, valuable and innovative software and services. At Go Daddy, you can get everything you need to make the most out of your domain ownership and Internet experience: private “unlisted” registrations; Traffic Blazer® (search engine registration); c-Site® (copyright application); Secure SSL Certificates; Merchant Accounts and more.
