The Big Toddle’s theme this year is a breath of fresh air! We’re bringing Nature to life, with opportunities for inventive, creative and crazy dressing up, plus the all-important Toddle event where little ones can stretch their legs and enjoy all the great outdoors has to offer.

Nature is everywhere. Just look around you and you’ll soon see plenty of wild and wonderful dressing-up ideas. If you need a little extra inspiration, we have a few ideas below to get you started!

Be bug-tastic Insects and bugs don’t need to be creepy! Think a little snail with tiny antennae and a curly swirly house on its back, a beautiful black and red ladybird or a stripy black and yellow buzzy bee!

Go wild Animals you might find in the garden are a great idea, like a furry fox, but you could look even further for inspiration... how about a lion from the jungle with a big crazy mane?

Get colour creativeNature is full of beautiful colours for a really eye-catching outfit. Think gorgeous grass green, beautiful sky blue or brilliant berry red.

Fauna fun Flowers, trees and plants all offer lots of dressing-up opportunities. How about making a headdress using leaves, flowers or feathers?

The Big Toddle is a great way for little ones to learn about helping others, whilst raising vital funds for vulnerable young people. Every single penny raised goes directly to Barnardo’s. There are lots of ways to make fundraising fun. We’ve got some inspiration and ideas below, but be as imaginative as you like in coming up with your own!

Colour-tastic Nurseries and playgroups could offer face-painting on the day or download the colourful footsteps activity from our website for little ones to colour in and take home, with a suggested donation from parents/guardians.

Food Everyone loves a tasty treat, so why not add a delicious extra touch to your Toddle with a Teletubbies-themed picnic or a cake sale for parents, friends and family members to enjoy?

From the age of nine, Jay has been looking after his mum who suffers from fibromyalgia. Jay’s dad left many years ago so he was the only one who could look after her. After his mum had a fall while he was out, Jay worried this would happen again. Whenever he was at school, he would call to check she was okay, and he was bullied because he was different to the other children.Jay was referred to Barnardo’s. He was given a one-to-one support worker so he could discuss his fears and anxieties, and his mum was given the professional support she needs.

At Barnardo’s, we believe that a child’s future should never be defined by their past. Every child deserves to play, learn and live a happy life. With your help, we can support some of the most vulnerable children in the UK like Megan and Jay, and improve their life chances by offering them a brighter future.

Most eight year olds are thinking about playtime with their friends. But for Megan, life was very different as a carer for her mother and younger brother, Ben. Shouldering such responsibility at a young age was a lot for her to take on, and she became isolated from her friends and stopped focusing on her school work. Megan was supported by a Barnardo’s service that helps young carers. She started attending a group, where she made new friends who understood what she was going through. She has now started university and has a bright future ahead of her – all thanks to the support of fundraisers like you.

Megan and Jay’s stories show how fundraising for Barnardo’s can transform vulnerable children’s lives. Their stories are true, however, names and images have been changed in order to protect the privacy of the children we help.
