Inclusive Fitness leads the way in providing accessible physical activity and in increasing participation amongst disabled people. 83% of disabled people have taken their custom to competitors when faced with inaccessible or unwelcoming services, so not only will Inclusive Fitness make a social change within your local community but it also makes good financial and business sense! The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) has been established for over 10 years, with a national coverage of 400 IFI Mark gym facilities. Managed by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), the IFI Mark is fundamental in addressing inequality in physical activity; to reach inactive populations, raise awareness of the benefits of exercise and create demand. Making Physical Activity Accessible to All The principles of providing accessible fitness for disabled people to this scale has attracted approximately 100,000 new disabled users, who have completed an induction within a local Inclusive Fitness gym; equating to over 1.6 million visits! However, statistics from the Active People’s Survey 5 still show that only 7% of disabled people participate in physical activity 3 x 30 minutes a week at moderate intensity (as recommended by Sport England in 2011) compared to 16% of non-disabled people.

The IFI Mark is an accreditation which can be achieved at three levels; Provisional, Registered and Excellent and awards leisure facilities upon their commitment to improving customer service, policy and provision of accessible physical activity.

The accreditation framework encourages continuous improvement to ensure that facilities offer disabled people more choice and opportunities to enjoy the benefits of physical activity.

The process of attaining the IFI Mark consists of a thorough facility audit undertaken by our independent auditors; Direct Enquiries, who are the UK’s leading access and compliance firm. From the audit you will be provided with an audit report and action plan considering all elements of Inclusive Fitness. The action plan will identify ways of reducing risk, enhanced health and safety and improvements to service provision for disabled users at each of the accreditation levels.
