The iconic year of 2018 brings about many historic occasions to reflect the
history of war and peace in Europe: It has been, for example, 10 years since
the declaration of independence of Kosovo and the Georgian-Russian
armed conflict, 50 years since the Prague Spring and the students’
movements in Europe, 100 years since the end of World War I and 400
years since the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War.
From 14 to 19 November 2018, the Körber Foundation together with its
partners organises this year’s EUSTORY Next Generation Summit in Berlin
to focus on the processes of making, negotiating and maintaining peace
in Europe.
Join the EUSTORY Summit and dive into history together with 120 young
Europeans as well as experts from the field of academia, journalism,
education and arts. Share your perspectives on the past and experience
that history can not only divide us, but can also serve as a starting point
for international understanding.

The First World War ended 100 years ago. Yet, the Armistice of Compiègne, signed in November
1918, marked only the beginning of the following peace negotiations in Paris. The agreements
shaped the 20th century and the continent as a whole. Imagine you had been one of the
diplomats negotiating this peace: How would you have represented your countries’ national
interests to end the war?
Dive into the role of a diplomat of one European country and become part of a simulated Paris
Peace Conference. You will be assigned a country and learn about its interests and aims
concerning the conditions for peace. In the negotiations, you as a diplomat will defend “your”
country’s position on cession of territory, the setting of national borders, disarmament and war
guilt. Thus, you can not only deepen your historical knowledge on the topic but also have the
chance to write history anew: with the historical insights of what was about to come in the 20th
century, what would you as a diplomat have done differently? Find out and re-negotiate the Paris

With each passing day, we have less and less of a connection to what came before us. History
needs to be re-narrated consistently if we want to save it from oblivion. The legacy of perpetrators
in history is an issue that requires particular attention and responsibility from all of us. How can
we use creative expression as a means to reconnect with history?
In this workshop, we will make use of the methodology “New Forms of Remembrance”, a practice
using provocative, charged locations to inspire our work, find new creative ways of
commemoration in order to give the next generation a chance to understand history and their
place in it. We will visit the house of the Wannsee Conference, where on 20 January 1942, fifteen
high-ranking Nazi officials met to discuss their plan to deport and murder European Jews. We will
use this as a starting point to dive into questions of guilt and the legacies of perpetrators: Are only
those guilty who wield the guns? How responsible are the perpetrators of the pen? Where in your
country do these questions arise? Through a series of writing and performance exercises, we will
try to expose our emotions and express the complex nature of guilt, responsibility, war and peace,

A work of art disappears in times of war. Years later, dedicated researchers find out that
combatants of a former war party stole the artwork; it was sold several times since then and is now
exhibited in the country’s national art museum. Morally perhaps a clear-cut case, but legally
inconclusive: Whose art is it?
Twenty years ago, in 1998, more than 40 countries and many international non-governmental
organisations agreed on the “Washington Principles”, which form the moral and political bases for
restitutions in the case of Nazi confiscated art. Can this attempt to right historical wrongs ensure a
more peaceful and respectful present? You will explore the history of artworks in museums and of
their previous owners. Here, provenance research, which deals with the origins and “paths” of
artworks, is essential. In this workshop, you will acquire insights into the toolkit of a provenance
researcher. On an excursion, you will then step into actual provenance research at a museum of
the “Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation” in Berlin. In small groups, you will develop a media

Can a single person influence the course of history in times of international integration and
globalisation? Personal histories of civic activism in the 20th and 21st century show that the
individual still can make a difference. But they also raise the question to what extent it is justified
or even necessary to break the rules or a would-be peace to stand up for your values and beliefs?
Take the chance to engage in intensive cross-generational encounters with civic activists from
different European countries and historical contexts. You will be introduced to the methodology
of oral history and will have the opportunity to prepare and conduct professional interviews with
civic activists from various age groups. As individuals, they decided to challenge an existing
situation at some point. Which lessons can we learn from their different experiences of self-
assertion in European history? Where in your family, region or country can you find examples of
people who raised their voices to bring about change? And what is it you want to improve today?
All your experiences and debates will be collected and brought together in an immersive stage
production.

History is on every street corner: Monuments and memorial sites shape cities and public
remembrance all over Europe. They are closely connected with the experiences from the past and
are meant to keep certain memories alive. But are they truly ‘set in stone’ or does their meaning
change over time?
This bilingual English-Russian workshop focuses on the role and history of memorials in the
cultures of remembrance all over Europe. You will meet experts working with memorials from the
past and the present in Berlin: They focus also on those memorials which have been abandoned
and demolished at various points in the past. These discarded memorials are part of the exhibition
“Unveiled – Berlin and its Monuments” at the Zitadelle Berlin, which you are going to visit. By
exploring a memorial from this exhibition and one from your hometown or region, you will
discover the origin stories of these monuments, analyse their forms and designs, decode their
messages, place them in their historical contexts and critically discuss their relation to and
relevance for the present. Finally, together with the other participants from this workshop, you

Do you sometimes have the impression that history only happens in big politics and that the
experiences of people, families and regions are overlooked? In this workshop, you will become a
historical detective, put your ear to the ground to find the stories and histories of Europeans and
make their voices heard.
In this workshop you will get the chance to find out how historical events affected people from all
over Europe and are still influencing the young generation of today. You will receive professional
journalistic coaching in the journalistic skills of research techniques and in arranging and
presenting your findings in a text or an audio format. By conducting interviews with interesting
persons, you will gather information, learn about the relevant historical events and arrange them
in a journalistic piece. The young Editors’ Team of the History Campus will be a part of this
workshop, which will give you the opportunity to get “backstage” insights into the History

Why should we look at a conflict from the 17th century to solve some of today’s conflicts? Are
there really parallels between the Thirty Years’ War and contemporary conflicts? Can we learn
from history and if so, which lessons can we draw and where are the limits?
In this workshop you will deal with the Peace of Westphalia, which in 1648 ended the Thirty Years’
War in central Europe. We will use it as a specific historical experience but also as an analytical tool
to understand and shed a new light on the roots of current conflicts and political rivalries. Can
historical research on “Westphalia” provide a creative approach to resolve or at least to gain a
better understanding of longstanding conflicts? Can you think of an event or conflict from your
own background or experience, which shows similar historical roots or striking historical parallels?
You will get the chance to meet experts and scholars who have been working on taking this new
path and reinvent the Peace of Westphalia. Explorative learning is an open and dynamic
methodology and the participants will have the chance to work with history off the beaten paths
