• Giving credit to Kevin Watson.• Brief discussion the main reason men are not in small groups.• How Class meetings are different from other meetings.• Wesley’s Class meeting‐ more important than worship?• How Sunday School gifted us and how it moved us in a different direction.  Did we gain more than we lost? 

• The mechanics‐ Role of the leader, things that can go wrong, and some keys for your group.

• Using technology and what that allows us to do.  

Meet Kevin Watson

My introduction to Dr. Watson 

• Fall of 2014‐ Council of Bishops Meeting in Oklahoma City.• I read the book.• I have multiple meetings each week using Zoom.us (Began with Skype, then Adobe Connect, then Google+, then Zoom)  (you’re on zoom now).

• So I set a meeting for the next 8 weeks‐ 3 clergy, 3 laity, no one knew everyone but me.  3 in different parts of TN, 1 in AR, PA, Il. (and me)

• I designed the schedule so we would end in February 5, 2015.• We are still meeting‐ I guess I did not do a good job of explaining 8 weeks.  Only 1 of the 6 has dropped out. 

March meeting of the Conference Presidents of UMM• I decided to pitch this to NACP‐ roughly 80‐100 leaders all in the US• If 30 agreed….• They did the 8 week session on‐line with 8 within their conference (8 districts)…..

• Those 8 did this with 10 who were members of different churches…. • Those 10 churches did this with 12 people in each church….• By Christmas how many would we reach?• 28,800 • Wesley said “give me one hundred men… they can shake the gates of Hell and will set up the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth” 

• Do the math just from this webinar. 

So why don’t men (and women) “do” groups?

• “I don’t have time to prepare.”• “I don’t know enough.”• But the REAL reason is TIME.• These are 1 hour a week, no prep, they have the skills needed.• But you and I know, a 1 hour meeting is not 1 hour‐ travel to the place, get some food on the way….a chunk of the morning/afternoon/evening is shot.

• If the meeting was only an hour, and you could be “at” the meeting from anywhere, and the group could even pick a weird time to do this, it works. 

• Tuesday night at 9:30, 7AM, noon, when our wives have another meeting…• You don’t even have to wear pants.

Not all groups are same

• Affinity Groups‐ united by a similar passion, interest or hobby‐ these are good “back‐door” ministries to establish a relationship with a church‐ but rarely do these groups make disciples‐ they are not set up to do that.

• Information‐driven Groups‐ curriculum based‐ these are topical studies, Bible studies‐ the focus is learning more about our faith. They assume that the right knowledge will lead to discipleship, that right knowing will lead to right living… There are great benefits of these meetings but they are not the best way to make disciples.  (DISCIPLE comes close)

The transformation‐driven group

• This is not about a mastery of content‐ but changed lives• It is an open discussion as to where you have experienced God this week. 

• Where have you felt the Holy Spirit move you or attempt to move you this week? 

• They are focused primarily on living rather than learning. • In my experience, men in particular have a “historic” relationship with Jesus. “When I was a kid…Before we had kids…4 years ago…..”

• Talking about where you have seen Christ this week, opens your eyes and heart‐ this is an on‐growing relationship, one that transforms.

This is not new‐ it was the foundation of Wesley’s revival and sparked a movement.• The preparation for the Class Meeting in Wesley’s day was to be watchful for God every day, ever listening for the Holy Spirit. 

• Yes, he wanted you to search the scriptures and do good every day.• Yes, there was a method that he wanted each member to follow.• But in the Class Meeting members talked about “how it was with their soul.”  Again this was not historical‐ it was a question of God being present in our lives each day.

• In comparing Wesley to other pastors within the movement, his commitment to these meetings made more disciples. 

A Class Meeting‐ more important than Worship?• Yes, in fact if you missed 3 meetings in a quarter without an excuse, you were no longer in the church!  Excommunicated! 

• But looking at Wesley the reason is very clear.  • What was he making? What was the goal? • It wasn’t membership or attendance.  He did not want more pew sitters.

• His goal was “to make disciples” and the place that happens is in these meetings.

If you want to start an interesting conversation• If you want to move forward with Class Meetings in your local church or across your district, and you get some push back, ask these questions: 

• “If our mission is to make disciples, where is that happening in our local church?”  

• “Where is it that people of faith can share their God sightings, those coincidences that we know are so much more?”

• If we look for light we will find it; if we are looking for Christ, he will make his presence known to you.  

• Wesley wanted and we need, men and women with an on‐growing transformational relationship with Christ.  

So is Sunday School bad?

• Watson raises the question, did we lose more than we gained? • We clearly got smarter.• We clearly know more about the Bible.• We have studied and confronted very hard social issues.• But we stopped sharing our failures and our doubts.  We stopped sharing where faith has triumphed in our lives. We stopped telling others where we were challenged this week.  

• But we are not making disciples at the rate the world needs; at the rate our church and communities need; at the rate the Kingdom needs.

O to be a movement again!

Role of the leader

• Watson has a great teaching on Reclaiming Lay Spiritual Leadership.• Leaders need to be vulnerable‐ share openly their relationship with God.

• They need to expect the Holy Spirt will show up for the meeting.• They need to expect transformation, lives being changed.• They are a gentle guide and a good listener.• The leader knows that if things go well‐ it is because of God.

What the leader should not do or be

• They are not teaching or the teacher.• Resist combining this work with a book study.• They need not have all the answers‐ since they don’t….• They are not the spiritual guru who can solve every person problems.• They are not a therapist or an expert.• They need to control the time‐ start time, stop time and making sure folks allow time for everyone to share.

• The group can grow in numbers but stay at or below 12 or a number that matches the time.  

• Start another group rather than overloading the one group.

Ways to make sure this doesn’t work: 

10. Don’t start one.9. Meet irregularly.8. Turn this into a curriculum study group.7. Make this an intense accountability group.6. Select a Class leader based on anything other than spiritual maturity and spiritual leadership.

5. Allow one person to dominate.4. Have ALL the answers.3. Hide during the meeting.2. View the group as a place to gather some great gossip. 1. Be unwilling to be challenged to grow in your faith and be transformed by the grace of God.

Other issues that can derail this

• Meet for more than 90 minutes• The group needs to know that they are not in control, but the Spirit is.• Decide ahead of time how you will set up the groups.• Are these going to be mixed groups or male groups and female groups?

• If they are mixed groups is it all couples? • I have found men are more open and honest with other men.  

Technology

• Great for younger men and women who use this all the time.• If you can do this webinar, and Facebook, you can do this.• It opens the door to people who would never be available. • Opens the door to folks who travel.• We have guys that do this on a laptop, an inexpensive tablet, or a smartphone.  

• If the meeting is set for an hour, it actually is an hour.  • This is done by invitation‐ so it is not open to just any person on the internet.  

• It can be a mix of face to face, and technology.  

So what are the next steps?

1. Get the book‐ www.seedbed.com or available on Kindle.2. Invite folks to join at a particular time each week for 8 weeks.3. You will do one chapter from the book a week.4. In addition to the mechanics of the Class Meeting, you will also gain an interesting perspective on Wesley and his theology.5. The groups can continue after the 8 weeks, or 6. Start other groups in their church or district or conference or7. Both! 8. A follow‐up email will be sent to each of you on April 5th, just to see how you are doing.
