Do You Make Deals With God?Part 1: The First DealFree Printable SermonUses:Bible studiesChristian teachingsSermons

I have often been told; "You can't make deals with God!", Yet I constantly find myself, doing justthat by trying to make deals with Him for things I want or desire in exchange for what He wants-even though I know that in the end I will obey His will and not mine. This study is about makingdeals with God, in it we will discover people who have tried or made deals with God in the HolyBible and what the results of those deals were.God Made The Very First Deal

The very first deal (and the first commandment told to mankind) was when the Lord God toldAdam and Eve that they could eat from every tree in the garden with one exception they were notto eat from the tree of good and evil. Eat of the tree and die or do not eat from the tree and live.

And the Lord God cammanded the man, saying of every tree of the garden thou mayestfreely eat: Gen. 2:16But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day thatthou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Gen. 2:17

God's command became a deal when He told Adam and Eve that if they eat from that tree that

they would surely die. Clearly, if they do not eat from the tree then they will live and if they do eatfrom the tree they would die-that was the deal-the very first deal recorded in the Holy Bible.

    The First Deal Breaker

The serpent twisted God's words when he talked to Eve by the tree of life and convinced her toeat the fruit from the tree of good and evil knowing that Adam and Eve did not know what deathreally was because the earth and everything in it was new. Whether, there was no death prior toeating of the tree of good and evil or if God was speaking of a spiritual death will be discussed inanother study. The fact remains when Eve ate of the fruit and gave some to her husband Adamthey would no longer live forever, suddenly knew they were naked, and as a direct result of their

deal breaking actions they had to be kicked out of the Garden of Eden along with several otherpunishments. However, as soon as they ate the fruit their eyes were opened and they suddenlyknew the difference between good and evil.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to theeyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Gen. 3:6

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed figleaves together, and made themselves aprons Gen. 3:7

Prior to this point Adam and Eve had not sinned, knew of no evil, no death, and no punishments. This example shows us that when we break a deal with God, our punishment will be harsh andswift.

    The First Blaming

Adam and Eve knew they had broke the deal, were ashamed of what they did, and hid from Godto avoid the punishment which was sure to result from their deal breaking actions. Prior to thisfirst sin, first desception there was no evil and the Lord God often walked in the garden talkingwith Adam and Eve but because of their actions God would no longer be able to walk and talkwith them. When we break a deal with God He gets angry because He makes sure that whatknow what He expects of us when we read and study His word. When God came looking for

Adam and Eve, at his usual time he found them hiding because they were afraid of what theirpunishment would be for disobeying God and neither of them wanted to take the blame for their

direct disobedience, probably thinking that by shifting the blame they could avoid punishment.People often do things they know are wrong but do not want to accept the blame or theconsequences of their actions and it has always been that way since Adam and Eve comitted thefirst sin-the first act of disobedience-the first deal breaker.

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: andAdam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees ofthe garden. Gen. 3:8And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? Gen. 3:9And he said, I heartd thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and Ihid myself. Gen. 3:10

And he said, Who told thee that thou was naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof Icommanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

    Adam blames Eve

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. Gen. 3:12

    Eve blames the Serpent

And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman

said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Gen. 3:13

The first punishment for disobedience for the first sin-breaking the deal with God

Before making a deal with God it is of utmost importance that we are aware of the punishmentthat will result from the act of disobedience or the act of breaking a deal you make with God. Goddoes not take disobedience lightly. Basically, if God says not to do something you automaticallyagree to His terms of the agreement when you become saved and baptized. Adam, Eve, and theserpent received a severe punishment not only on themselves but on all generations to come!

    God cursed the serpent

The first punishment was meted out to the serpent. God cursed him above all cattle and beasts ofthe field, made him crawl on his belly and eat dust, and made him an enemy of the woman for therest of his existence:

    1. Cursed above catle and beasts of the field2. Crawl on his belly3. Eat dust4. Become the enemy of woman

And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed

above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dustshalt thou eat all the days of thy life: Gen.3:14And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; itshall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Gen. 3:15

The womans curses are pain in child birth and submission to her husbands authority which arestill in effect:

    1. Pain in child birth2. Submit to her husbands authority to rule over her

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly mulitply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrowthou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule overthee. Gen. 3:16

    God cursed the man

God reprimanded the man for listening to his wife when he knew that it was wrong and did itanyway, in spite of the fact that God had commanded Adam not to eat of the tree. Adams curseswere many and were given to him and all generations after him:

    1. The ground curse2. Eating from the ground curse3. The curse of thorns and thistles4. Hard work5. Death

The ground and eating from the ground curse

And unto Adam he said, because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eatenof the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt no eat of it: cursed is the ground forthy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the day sof thy life; Gen. 3:17

The curse of thorns and thistles

Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; Gen.3:18

The curse of hard work and death

In the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thoutaken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Gen. 3:19

And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and, lesthe put forth his hand, and take also fof the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Gen. 3:22

Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whene hewas taken. Gen. 3:23

So he drove out the man and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and aflaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. Gen. 3:24

Whether to God or people; Breaking your word is not an option

In the bible promises are called covenants. God made many covenants to us and He keeps Hisend of the bargain you can be sure. When you speak your vow out loud you are expected to dowhat it is that you said you would.

And Mose spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is thething which the Lord hath commanded. Num. 30:1

If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall notbreak his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. Num. 30:2

    Summary

Very much like any deal, contract, covenant or promise. If you make an agreement whether it bewith God or man, you should always hold up to your end of the deal. If you are unsure if you arecapable of holding up your end of the deal then you should not make the agreement. If you breakan agreement, for whatever reasons be prepared to face the consequences for your actions.Unfortunately, in many cases, the consequences for your actions have a direct affect on otherpeoples lives as well, which should be taken into consideration prior to making an agreement. When you accept responsibility for something, make an agreement or a deal, so to speak, then itis your moral obligation to fulfill your end of the bargain, you must hold up to your end of theagreement whether it be with God or man or suffer the consequences, you and anyone you haveinvolved in it. Be careful of the agreements you make. Be sure that they are in line with the wordof God. Be assured that if you make a promise to God that He will be sure to hold you to it.
