Making Comparisons

In English we add –er to adjectives to make comparisons such as smarter, faster, taller, etc.

There is no ending to add on to adjectives in Spanish to make comparisons so we use más or menos.

Más + adjective + que

More+adjective+than

Example…Shaq es más alto que

yo.The “more tall”

works like our –er.

Menos + adjective + que

Less+ adjective + than

Yo soy menos alta que Shaq

I am less tall than Shaq.

The “less tall” is like saying shorter.

You can use the same concept with

nouns to make comparisons.

Example…Bill Gates tiene más

dinero que yo.

Just like you wouldn’t say gooder or badder in English there are words for better and worse.Mejor= betterPeor= worse

Others that don’t use más or menos:

Mayor= olderMenor= younger

Yo tengo 26 años.Mi hermano tiene 31

años.Él es mayor que yo.Yo soy menor que él.

Use tan…como for adjectives that are

equal.Example…

Sra Stanley es tan simpática como Sra

Echel.

Use tanto…como for nouns that are equal.

Example…Tengo tantos años

como T-Pain.
