The Greatness of Jesus in the Messiness of Life Mark 6:45-52 Jesus is greater than all that is against us. And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. Mark 6:48a Text Message: o Some translations say they were, “straining at the oars.” o Notice that unlike the prior storm in Mark 4, their lives are not in danger, they are not in fear for their lives, etc. o This account simply means the disciples were not making progress, they were “stuck ,” or “spinning their wheels.” o Yet notice that the very thing that had them in a mess is the very thing Jesus walked upon : And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Mark 6:48b o We could say that where they were straining, Jesus was reigning ! The wind and sea posed no obstacle to Him! o Do you realize that Jesus knows your messes in life? That what is threatening you is no threat to Him? That His power within you is greater? o The story contains some interesting questions: Why did Jesus make his disciples go before Him in Verse 46? Why did Jesus wait so long to come to them in Verse 48? Why was Jesus going to pass them by in Verse 48? Jesus is greater than all of our “unknowns .” And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Mark 48b Text Message: o Notice the Bible doesn’t say that Jesus came walking on the water ! This blurred distinction to us is important here. o To first-century Jews: 1) Water was something you drank and used to bathe. 2) The sea, however, was dangerous and a haunt of demons. o Demons were believed to cause storms and disasters at sea. o The root of this fear was the unknown . o Many of our fears are also rooted in the unknown. o In the midst of our messiness and fear of the unknown, Jesus says, “Take heart; it is I.
