BSP International Foundations and Colets Piling have collaborated on a British-designed and purpose-built piling rigWhen UK-based piling contractor Colets Piling became aware that its rental customers were in need of a piling rig to top-drive steel or precast concrete piles for small to medium-sized housing projects, it decided to approach BSP International Foundations and ask them to design and build a mast and piling hammer to fit on a JCB excavator. The main criteria for the rig were easy transportation without the need of movement orders; reduced cost of piling mats for the rig to run on, as this can significantly increase the cost of the housing development; and increased productivity with quicker set-up, faster drive times and reliability. Colets Piling appointed JCB to supply a number of base units from its JS range. These machines have already been introduced into the contract and rental fleet of Colets Piling in rotary versions, making this the first driven rig of its type.BSP, in turn, offered a JX25-8 fitted with a 2t dropweight hydraulic hammer and a 13m-long mast. Research showed a larger interest in a machine that could cope with 8m piles, so the JX25-8 was the final choice.
Key featuresOne key consideration in the design was the overall mass of the rig. The JX-8 exerts a ground pressure of only 82 (kN/m^2 which is further reduced once the hammer is in place and sitting on the pile - as the pile takes the weight of the hammer. The rig then only guides the pile into the ground while the hammer is driving. The JX track base is square for maximum stability. With a working radius of 3.1m, the mast can be spotted anywhere around the base. Five degrees of mast rotation left or right helps iron out un-level ground. The rig can self-erect its mast without the help of other plant. The JX also has two dedicated lift winches, one to lift the hammer and the other to lift the pile with a maximum weight of 1.5t. Moreover, hydraulic arms retain the bottom of the pile to guide it in place once the pile has been located into one of the dedicated helmets under the hammer. The hydraulic hammers driven by the base unit are from BSP’s DX range, designed to be versatile with a low power consumption (40KW). It is estimated that over 250 linear metres of pile can be driven in one shift using the JX rig. So whether it is more piles driven or piles driven in a shorter space of time, it can adds up to a cost-effective solution. The hammers are also capable of driving steel tubes, ‘H’ piles, wooden or precast concrete pile sections to an ultimate load-bearing capacity of over 1,000KN.The hammer retains a dedicated helmet or cap suited to the pile to be driven, keeping the centre line of the hammer in line with the pile. This ensures maximum transfer of energy from the hammer into the pile. A plastic dolly is used in the helmet to stop metal-to-metal contact of the drop weight on to the helmet. Shock absorbers built in to the hammer dampen the pile recoil, reducing vibration to the cage and hydraulic cylinder assembly. This can reduce any downtime of the hammer or the rig.Once a job is completed, the mast is lowered and the JX rig can be driven on to a low loader, without the need to remove the hammer from the mast.
The collaboration between Colets and BSP has resulted in a purpose-built rig, ready for work in less than six months.

Rig Specification
Calculation of the peak ground pressure at any slewing position of the rig fulfils the requirements of EN16228-1 Annex F by including the effects of wind and dynamic forces of slewing, traction, leader adjustment and lifting of hammer and pile.Alternative ground pressure data is provided, based upon the FPS Rig loading code for input into the BRE platform design method. (BRE report 470 – Working Platform for Tracked Plant 2004). This methodology does not however include provision for the effects of wind or dynamic forces as required by EN16228Pressures based on 3.370 m ctrs tumblers x 700mm track pads
