MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF REFUGEES | AUGUST 2020 COVID-Relief Distribution Begins! “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10 You made it possible for Impact Hope students and their families to receive support during COVID-19. We want to say a big THANK YOU!! During these challenging times, students returned to their refugee camps while the Rwandan government put school on hold for safety measures. Our desire remains the same: to offer hope of a better life for refugee youth. That is why we invited you to help us provide basic supplies as a way to help student families in the camps, now with more mouths to feed. Thanks to you, they received rice, cooking oil, beans, Kawunga (cornmeal with beans) and soap. Aurea, our field coordinator with ADRA Rwanda, reported, “They are VERY happy. Students and parents are so thankful!” (Continued on page 3.)

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF REFUGEES | AUGUST 2020

COVID-Relief Distribution Begins!“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of

God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

You made it possible for Impact Hope students and their families to receive support during COVID-19. Students and parents are so thankful!”

Tumusifu makes liquid soap to sell in jerry cans.

Your Impact Goes Beyond Education!

My name is Tumusifu. I live in Gihembe camp. I am a producer of liquid soap and I have now become a mobile money agent from the profit of the liquid soap project. My group members and I started our project of liquid soap after learning about the production in high school. We got an idea of developing the skills we learned into business. At that time, in 2017, we started a small business by contributing small amounts of money and then produced liquid soap to supply our school [Gahogo Adventist Academy]. Our business has developed! We started with using two jerry cans [five gallon containers] to produce the soap and now we have increased to 40 jerry cans. This achievement is because Impact Hope sponsors who paid our school fees to learn and receive the knowledge needed to help us start our project. Thank you!

“Thank you for your commitment of helping us!”

My name is Ester and I am from the Nyabiheke refugee camp. First, I would like to greet you and say thank you for all Impact Hope has done for me. I am so glad to share my story. After completing my studies, a friend helped me to find a job and now I am working in Kayonza City at the market. I sew and sell items like thread, African women’s clothing/wraps, and sewing machines. Now I have my own machine to sew clothes and that helped give me money to get materials/tools to sell for tailoring. In my small ability, now I can pay my rent and buy basic needs with my own money. Impact Hope is the one who helped me through giving me skills in hand to push me to do all these things even through the challenges. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you and Impact Hope!

One of the primary goals of Impact Hope is that the students will move beyond dependence as refugees into self-sufficiency and better opportunity. Five years into the program, we are now seeing many graduates taking big steps and starting their own businesses. Here are stories from three of those students, in their own words. Thank you for your part to bring them to this point!

My name is Janvier. I am from the Gihembe refugee camp. In 2018, I graduated high school with the help of Impact Hope and also received vocational training [through the Impact Hope training program] at Gitwe with your sponsorship. After leaving school, I took the skills I received and started a small shop selling different snacks located in the Gihembe camp. Thank you for your commitment of helping us! May God bless you!

“Thank you for your commitment of helping us!”

Janvier is a small snack shop entrepreneur in Gihembe camp.

Most Impact Hope university students have had to shelter in place in their university housing. One of these students sent this letter of appreciation for the continued support from Impact Hope.

“I’m humbly appreciative for the food support that was given to the Impact Hope scholars. Thank you for the maize flour, rice, oil, beans, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste. I’m more than happy and thankful for this support and care of saving the lives of refugees. I’ve been seeing the call for fundraising for this support which showed me the effort made. Thank you very much. Impact Hope sponsors are parents and show their care for us students. The continuation of stipend to the university students in these terrible days has been a very nice thing. All the activities you do are so touching and surely God will reward you.”
