Speakers Examine Nursing’s Role in Stroke Care

Tere is a growing recognition of the importance of evidence-based nursing, and the practice is still undergoing many developments.

A session on “Evidence-Based Nurs-ing,” from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday in room 502 A, will explore what evidence-based nursing practice is, the current state of evidence-based nursing for stroke care and the importance of nursing involvement in developing guidelines for stroke care.

“Evidence-based practice for nursing care in stroke is gaining momentum, but it has a long way to go,” said Kate Maddox RN, MS, CS, stroke nurse practitioner for the University of Michigan Health System’s Department of Neurology Cardiovascular Center, Ann Arbor. “This session will help nurses and others involved in stroke care understand how to evaluate current nursing practice and what still needs to be done to establish the basis for providing effective stroke care.”

Maddox will co-moderate the session with Karen Rapp, RN, BSN, CCRC, Univer-sity of California, San Diego. The session will feature four speakers from across the country.

Shirley Frederiksen, RN, MS, Ann Arbor, Mich., will speak on “Evidence-Based Nursing for Stroke in the ED.” Robin Saiki, MSN, ACNP, University of Colorado, Denver, will cover “Applying Evidence-Based Nursing to Stroke Unit Care.”

Session Explores PCA Stroke Management, InterventionsW

hile 5 to 10 percent of strokes affect the posterior cerebral artery (PCA), they are among the most severe and debilitating of strokes.

A 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. session today on “Cur-rent Endovascular Management of Acute Pos-terior Circulation Strokes” in Room 408 AB will delve into the management, techniques, interventions and surgical revascularization of PCA strokes.

“Endovascular techniques now have emerged to the point where patients can bene t tremendously, not only in the acute setting, but in the long-term prevention of further strokes. While these lesions are dif cult to treat with open surgical techniques, open surgical tech-niques offer some preventive ef cacy in terms of reducing the risk of stroke,” said Felipe Albuquerque, M.D., assistant director of endo-vascular neurosurgery, Barrow Neurosurgical Associates, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix.

Albuquerque and David Fiorella, M.D., Ph.D., professor of clinical neurological surgery and radiology, Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Medical Center, will co-moderate the program.

Experts Address Mysteries of Gender Differences in Stroke

Not only is stroke an underappreciated problem in children, but it also strikes more boys than girls and manifests differently in each gender, major

topics that will be addressed during “Gender Differences in Stroke: Insights from Its Origins in Childhood” from 7:30 to 9 a.m. today in Room 502 A.

“There’s a difference between boys and girls in the incidence and etiology of stroke, the underlying mechanism and how they respond to it. Highlighting this interesting observation will be the focus of this symposium,” said co-mod-erator Nabil J. Alkayed, M.D., Ph.D., professor and director of the Cerebrovascular Research Division and Core Molecular Laboratories and Training, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Oregon Health and Sci-ence University, Portland.

Timothy J. Bernard, M.D., co-moderator, said it is also important to understand why

males have a greater predisposition for stroke than females.

“From the newborn to the 80-year-old, there is something about how males are put to-gether that predisposes them to having arterial ischemic stroke,” said Dr. Bernard, co-director of the Pediatric Stroke Program, University of Colorado, Denver, and The Children’s Hospi-tal, Aurora, Colo.

The symposium will begin with an “Overview of Gender Differences in Stroke in Adults: Lessons from Clinical Research” presented by Louise McCullough, M.D., Ph.D., director of Stroke Research, University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, who has conducted basic science research on gender difference in adult stroke. Her lecture will focus on risk factors, epidemiology, clinical presentation and outcomes in adult stroke in men and women.

The International Stroke Conference offers exceptional learning opportunities for attendees.

The morning presentations will cover:• “Medical Management of Posterior Circula-

tion Strokes” — Christine Anne Wijman, M.D., associate professor of neurology and neu-

rological sciences and of neurosurgery, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Univer-sity Medical Center, Palo Alto, and director of
