This pattern uses a technique which I am very fond of: dry brushing. Dry brush is an eff ective technique where you slowly build your paint layers to develop depth by layering from dark to light. Often when I use this technique I will use one brush that I do not clean until I have layered all of the paint colors. When dry brushing remove most of the paint onto a dry paper towel before applying the paint to the surface, this gives you a light paint application which can be somewhat transparent or more opaque depending on the amount of paint you apply. The beauty of the technique is that you can apply the paint so that your base layer shows through and changes the value of subsequent layers. In this pattern I chose to use a “dirty brush” between paint colors. Since we are working from dark to light leaving the previous paint color on your brush gives you a graduated change between paint applications.

Base the center background using a slip slap brush technique, using a back and forth motion, load your 1" fl at wash with Snow White and dip one corner of the brush into Indian Turquoise and begin moving your brush around slip slapping the paint onto the surface, reloading your brush as needed until you have achieved a mottled marbled look.

Base the corner squares with Indian Turquoise, fl oat shade with Sapphire, and dry brush highlight with Light Butter-milk.

Base the rectangular borders with Wa-termelon Slice, dry brush with Orange Flame, and fl oat shade with Napa Red.

Load the 6" X 6" Sunny Sketch stamp with Indian Turquoise, align the stamp so that it stamps in the corner lining up with the side and bottom of the center of the wood piece, repeat the stamp on the opposite side of the center rectan-gle. Note the pattern photo for place-ment.

To load your stamp use a small damp sponge to tap the paint onto the sur-face of the stamp. This will take a little practice to achieve the right distribu-tion of paint, as well as how wet to keep your paint while prepping the stamp. Work quickly, pounce the paint onto the surface of the stamp and take the stamp directly to the wood surface. Using one of the clear handles helps to stabilize the stamp and allows for greater control when stamping. Once you have posi-tioned your stamp on the wood surface press with even pressure to transfer the paint to your surface. If you do not get a good image it might be that your paint is drying too quickly. You can remove the paint from the wood surface by wetting the paint with a bristle brush and wiping it off with a paper towel. Do this quickly before the paint has time to set up and begin to dry. Then reapply paint to your stamp, position the stamp on the surface and press the image onto the surface. Clean your stamp when you are fi nished. Do not leave paint to dry on your stamp.

Stencil the words onto the bottom and side rectangular shapes with Napa Red. Choose the message you want to ap-

pear in these border areas, most of this will be covered slightly with the images.

Transfer the sun to the top of the signboard. Note how it overlaps into the center rectangular area, and paint the area on the blue background with Watermelon Slice. You will use the background paint color in the top border area to develop the sun. Dry brush the sun with Orange Flame. Using the dirty brush from the previous paint application load your brush with Jack-O-Lantern Orange and remove much of the paint on a clean paper towel and dry brush over the circular portion of the en-tire sun which is above and below the grooved border. Load your dirty brush with Orange Twist, and using the same technique removing much of the paint on a clean paper towel drybrush over the previous layer. Load this dirty drybrush from your previous paint applications with Moon Yellow; remove much of your paint and dry brush the sun area. You have now worked from dark to light and have developed the colors for the sun. Using the same dirty brush from the previous paint applica-tions load your brush with Neon Scorching Yellow and lightly dry brush over the sun.

Float shade on the red rectangular area with Napa Red to shade behind the sun and the sun’s rays.

Float shade the sun’s rays which overlap onto the blue background with Sapphire. Float highlight the rays with

Orange Twist and deepen with Neon Scorching Yellow. Lightly dry brush highlight the sun’s rays with Orange Twist. Using a SL line the lines forming the rays with Metallic Gold. Note the pattern photo for placement

Base the hair with Burnt Sienna, line highlight with

Honey Brown and Light Buttermilk. Thin a small puddle of Burnt Sienna down to a transparent consistency. Using the SL add in small amounts of the transparent Burnt Sienna to tone down the highlighted areas. This is simply meant to tone down the highlights but also can add additional tonal values since you are using a transparent wash over lighter highlighted areas. You may need to reapply some of the highlight paint colors once you have toned down the value of the hair. Using a SL line additional highlighted areas in the hair with Metallic Gold. Thin Soft Black down to a thin transpar-ent consistency. Using the SL line shade with Asphal-tum and Soft Black. Painting hair is a balancing act to develop the tones and values of the hair. Work back and forth between paint colors to develop the hair. When Soft Black is thinned down it takes on a dark brown value and adds nice shaded detail to the hair. Note the line art for the direction lines in the hair.

Using the dirty brush from the previous paint application add Moon Yellow and deepen by randomly dry brushing in the high-lighted areas. Wash Neon Scorching Yellow over the highlighted areas. Float shade with Watermelon Slice and dry brush Watermelon Slice into the darker areas of the folds of the pinafore. Note the pattern photo for placement.
