festivals and events

gulgong Folk FestivalLocated in the charming historical gold rush town of Gulgong in the Central West of NSW (about 4 hours from Sydney) the Gulgong Folk Festival, for 28 years, has long had a reputation as one of the best small music festivals in the country and is well worth the post-Christmas, pre-New Year's drive.

“... for its size this festival regularly punches above its weight.” Timber and Steel, Nov 2013.

“ One of the best music festivals in Australia.” Trad and Now, March 2013.

Featuring the cream of Australia's up and coming Folk, Country and Blues artists, the best thing is - this year again the festival is totally FREE.

It is a magnet for the serious music aficionado and has a reputation par excellence in music circles for its imaginative and innovative artist repertoire. Wander the historical township, walk into the many venues and soak up the atmosphere. Start-ing with an opening party on the Friday night, 26 December, the festival runs on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December and is one for the whole family.

The full line up will be on the website, and here are some of the highlights:

Bearded Gypsies, Daniel Champagne, Crooked Fiddle Band, Sweet Jelly Rolls, Freddie White (Ireland), Lexi Marie (Canada), Genevieve Chadwick, Honey (for-merly Fig Jam), 19-Twenty, Squeeze Box Trio, The Fruit Trees, Southerly Change, String Theory, Allan Caswell, Out of Albindon, Terry Serio, The Plough, Slightly Off, and much more.

Markets, street concerts, busking, street entertainment, food and of course the leg-endary camping and dorm facilities of Red Hill Environmental Centre and School located right next to the original gold diggings.

The CORNSTALK Gazette DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015 7The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au

The Illawarra Folk Festival will be celebrating its 30th Pearl Anniversary in 2015.

Special events include the inaugural fringe street band festival HONK! Oz (free three-day street music festival in Wollongong, www.honkfest.org.au), an extended program of youth opportunities including the launch of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra, a new venue featuring songwriters circles, the “It’s a Pearler” song and tune

writing competition (see below), and a special 30th anniver-sary exhibition.

The highlight of the four-day festival will be the Friday night costumed Pearl Ball, where the weekend will kick off in style with a fantastically flamboyant concert, and run into the wee hours with gypsy dance bands and a sea shanty session guar-anteed to tickle the sternest of swashbucklers!

The Thursday of the festival is also expanding to include more concerts and activities and as always, proceeds will go directly to charity organisations, this year’s recipients being Cystic Fibrosis NSW and The

Denny Foundation.A major focus this year is to provide more opportunities to young people interested in playing folk mu-sic. As well as the highly successful folk music school, youth concerts and the Youth Traditions Awards, young musicians aged 15 to 25 are also being invited to take part in the new national youth folk orchestra, Folkaphonic. This exciting new concept developed by golden fiddle winner Emma Nixon and artistic director David De Santi will continue beyond the fes-tival to offer performance opportunities around the country, workshops, camps and special projects.

As well as booking many new national and international art-ists, the committee have made sure to invite back some of the many beloved musicians who have supported the Illawarra Folk Festival over the years, and made it the flourishing com-munity event it is today.

Then there is the 30th Pearl Anniversary Song and Tune Writ-ing Competition.Calling all songwriters and tune writers! The Illawarra Folk Festival invites all songwriters and musicians residing in Australia to enter our

30th Pearl Anniversary song contest - It's A Pearler! Gener-ously sponsored by our friends at APRA AMCOS! Prizes to be announced.

Australian composers of all ages will be able to submit new compositions with a pearl reference, connection, theme or title. How you include the pearl theme is entirely up to you, as long as it's obvious enough for

the judges to recognise it! Depending on the category, sub-missions will be judged on the following criteria:

Creativity, Originality, Lyrics (excludes songs that do not have lyrics), Melody, Arrangement, Overall likeability

Categories

1. Open Song Section, 2. Open Tune Section 3. Youth (U25) Song Section, 4. Youth (U25) Tune Section

Acclaimed singer songwriters Archie Roach and Shellie Mor-ris will headline the 20th Cobargo Folk Festival in February.

Organisers of the festival are delighted that a collabora-tion with the Bermagui Four Winds Festival helped secure $30,000.00 in funding from the NSW Government to assist in bringing these artists to the community festival from February 27th to March 1st 2015 in Cobargo.

Festival Director Dave Crowden said he was thrilled to work with Four Winds on the project and grateful for the funding support. "It's fantastic that the NSW Government recognises the importance of supporting community festivals and music development in regional areas,” he said. "This support has enabled us to bring artists of the calibre of Archie and Shellie to our festival to inspire audiences, musicians and performers from across the Bega Valley and beyond."

“It’s going to be another great festival, with so many extras happening this year. Shellie Morris will be leading indigenous youth song-writing workshops in the six months leading up to the event, and will join Archie on stage at a special performance on the Monday following the festival in Wallaga Lake.”

Early-bird tickets are on sale now from the website www.cobargofolkfestival.com

Australian entertainer Ami Williamson is also on the bill for Cobargo 2015. Since 2000, has toured Australia and abroad with her celebrated show, performing at major venues and festivals including Woodford Folk, Port Fairy, National Folk Festival and Sydney’s State Theatre.

Indigenous Darwin-based singer/songwriter Shellie Morris is one of Australia's most treasured artists, creating songs of power and inspiration. She has travelled the world both as a solo artist and as part of collaborations like The Black Arm Band. Her feet are firmly planted in the soil of the Northern Territory where she spends a lot of her time when not record-ing or working on programs around the world. She spends much time travelling around the bush, doing songwriting workshops with communities and travelling around the world

vALe: edward gough Whitlam July 11, 1916 October 21, 2014,

The Whitlam Government provided unprecedented support to Australia’s arts sector, helping a generation of creative Australians to give voice to a new independent, confident and distinctively Australian cultural identity. In his 1972 election campaign speech, Whitlam stated that his government’s arts policy would be guided by four cardinal objectives: ‘to promote a standard of excellence in the arts, to widen access to, and the understanding and applica-tion of, the arts in the community generally, to help establish and express an Australian identity through the arts and to promote an awareness of Australian culture abroad’.

Australia’s cultural heritage was protected with landmark legisla-tion, and the creation of the Australian Heritage Commission and the Register of the National Estate. These measures helped to identify, protect and conserve sites significant to Australia’s social history for the benefit of future generations.

singing and writing. Shellie shares the message of her music with young Indigenous people, always encouraging, inspir-ing and touching the hearts of those who cross her path. From the Arafura Sea and the Yolngu regions of Arnhem Land to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara deserts of greater Central Australia, across the Tanami to Kintore and Lajamanu and into the Kimberley, and from the Torres Straits to Redfern, Shellie shares her music, her stories and her pas-sions.

Darlo by Night (acapella choir from Darlington)

Mummers Play (Medieval-cum-C21 seasonal mayhem from Black Joak Morris)

Folklore (lively 6 piece Celtic band - Old world sounds for a new sound world)

Carol Singing and an Informal Session (bring voice + any other instrument)

Brian Jonathon is an emerging new singer-songwriter on the Sydney folk scene. His all-original songs sing for social justice, of life and times (past and present) and of the some-times darkly humorous absurdities of modern life. Inspired by a lifelong immersion in contemporary and traditional folk music, Brian has sung in folk clubs in his native Ire-land, in England and more recently in Sydney where he now lives. Brian is a regular at the monthly Gaelic Café singing sessions, producing a new song every month relevant to the night’s theme.

Black Joak Morris: Mummers Play – The Joakers in this Morris Dancing Troupe have written a Mummers Play which promises to be full of hilarity and topical referenc-es. Morris dancing and Mummers plays both have roots in ancient traditional customs. Both have been part of English life for hundreds of years and are associated with fertil-ity rites and ancient Anglo-Saxon village

customs. Mummers plays are comic in style and generally involve a battle between two or more characters, represent-ing good against evil. Usually they feature a doctor who has a magic potion which is able to resuscitate a slain character. blackjoak.morris.org.au

Folklore - this group brings together the fine talents of Rosie Mc-Donald, Fiona McVic-ar, Cliona Molins, Ken O'Neill and Anthony Woolcott, all well-regarded musicians on the folk festival scene as traditional-style ses-sion players, soloists and members of bands, Mothers of Intention, RAPT, Triantan and Jiggery. For these time travellers in sound, past is present is future, the human state really not changing over the millennia despite the march of time. Together, they unlock the secrets shrouded in the words, music, symbols and stories of the past - from murder ballads and songs of revenge to rousing sea shanties; from songs of the joy of lovers reunited to choruses delighting in the seasons; from lively Bard songs to beautiful and tender love songs; from toe tapping, skirt-swirling fiddle tunes to evocative mist-swirling airs on the harp. With 2 guitars, 2 Irish bouzoukis, fiddle, ParaCeltic harp, bodhran and 4-part vocal harmony, Folklore explore the depths and breadth of the folkloric canon to bring you the music that inspires and nurtures them. facebook.com/folkloresydney

dance newsSydney Playford Dance groupThe final dance for the year will be on Tuesday 2nd Decem-ber, with several callers and some interesting dances, at the usual venue, the Bush Music Club, Hut 44, Addison Road Centre, 142 Addison Rd, Marrickville, 7.30pm.

The past year has seen a large number of dances done (listed at facebook.com/sydneyplayford), taught by various callers: Julie Bishop, Keith Wood, Heather Clemesha and Pat George. Everyone has appreciated the privilege of dancing to live music,

organised by fiddler Ralph Pride, who also leads the half-dozen or so musicians. Dancer numbers have ranged from 10 to 24.Please note, there will be NO Playford dance in January. Playford dancing will resume on Tuesday 3rd February 2015.

Portarlington 2014This year the Traditional Social Dance Association of Victoria (TSDAV) was celebrating their 20th year of the Spring Dance Weekend at Portarlington. And once again, it was a great suc-cess.

There was the usual mix of dance styles and local and interstate callers.Peter Ellis (Bendigo) led simple but fun (and lively!) dances from the 'Gay Nineties to the Roaring Twenties'. Norm Ellis taught dances, some quite inventive, from the last 20 years of TSDAV's annual Dance Composers Competitions.

Matthew Robertson was the teacher for a Scottish dance workshop. A fiddler, he also ran a Scottish music workshop for musicians; and, with Duncan Smith (piano), Julia Arnold (double bass), and guest David South on accordion, provided great music for different styles of music at the Saturday night dance. Everyone was encouraged to dress in 'Roaring

Twenties' style for that dance – and there were some spectacu-lar outfits, especially among the ladies!

The hambo, a tricky Swedish couples dance, needed a workshop all to itself. It was taught and demonstrated very effectively by Canberra's

Roger Gifford and Christine Ridgway, so that dancers got the hang of the steps (women's pattern of steps is crucially differ-ent from men's).

Putting them together with a partner will take more work! Everyone tried hard, and requested it again for the Farewell Dance on Sunday afternoon.

Roger also had a workshop of Nordic dances.

Julie Bishop (Sydney) taught American contras – but the hit of the workshop was an Australian contra by Peter Foster from Canberra, who writes some incredible dances.

It is a lovely weekend of dancing, in the beautiful bayside town on the Bellarine peninsula east of Geelong, with a lovely crowd of dancers – who come from South Australia, NSW, and Queensland, to dance with their Victorian friends.

Shanty SessionWe're looking forward to a jolly night of sea songs that mention Christmas at our 11th December Shanty night - but nautical songs that reference food and drink will be just fine!

Regulars know that there is an op-portunity for everyone to lead songs and all are encouraged to join in the choruses. We take a very liberal view of what constitutes a sea song so don’t hold back! And bring a friend or four! It's one of the most magic ways to spend an evening in Sydney - on board a historic sailing ship alongside at Darling Harbour with Sydney lights sparkling all around. The evenings just now are perfectly balmy, so it looks like we'll have our first session on the deck.

The ship opens at 7.30pm and we start at 8. We break for sup-per around 9, followed by a shanty circle where everyone can contribute. The ship stays tied to the wharf, so you can arrive and leave at any time.

Visitors are asked to donate $7 per session, of which $5 goes totally towards the maintenance of this exceptional ship and

$2 towards supper. (Members of Sydney Heritage Fleet, only $2 for supper. To become a SHF member go to shf.org.au/membership-volunteering/memberships/ - the cost is $60 per year, $35 concession.)

Directions: If walking from the city, walk over Pyrmont Bridge, turn right into Murray St, walk past the big white National Maritime Museum and straight ahead you should see the James Craig.

The closest public transport is Pyrmont Bay station for the Light Rail.

Parking may be available on Wharf 7 opposite the James Craig - Do NOT park in front of any of the glass doors. Off Murray St, Pyrmont, turn into the driveway to the left of the Wharf 7 building then turn right before the Wharf 7 Build-ing - press the button on the Intercom on the building side of the gate, give your name and tell them you are there for the Shanty Session on the James Craig.

Whether you enjoy sitting quietly and listening; or joining in loudly for the chorus; or leading a song, you’ll be welcome at this singing session on board a wonderfully restored 140 year-old tallship.

Shanty Session Co-ordinators: Mike Richter 0419 992 119, Margaret Walters 0427 958 788 or 9698 2206.

More than a life:John Meredith. the Fight for Australian tradition - by Keith MckenrySome thoughts from R.Dale Dengate.

Keith MeKenry is to be congratulated on compiling his biog-raphy on John Meredith.

It was a challenging task as John Meredith, aka Merro, had an exceptional life full of travels around Australia in search of traditional material. And it was a ‘fight for Australian Tradi-ton.’ The book gives details of meeting people and getting to know them before he collected their recollections of music, song and verse from the Australian experience. His files recorded the precise place and date when the song was sung, but McKenry often has the reader flipping back pages to lo-cate the possible year: was it ’84 or ’87? Merro was extremely important in the field of Australian Folklore and the founding of Bush Music Club and much more.

Although Merro kept copious notes and filed them me-thodically before he lodged them in the ANL – where I have enjoyed reading them to refresh my memory of all the stories Merro shared with John D. and myself from 1960s onwards. We spent many a weekend at ‘Walden’ and later at ‘Rose Cot-tage’ and Merro joined us for many of his birthdays, until he decided it was becoming like the ‘Summer of the Seventeenth doll’. Merro was ambivalent about birthdays and the age-ing process although he loved special dinners with fine food, wine and song, so he did resume them in his 80s, when the Woodlands would drive him to Glebe for the night. They were always memorable evenings. The book recalls many people’s recollections of sharing pleasurable meals with Merro in the bush and homes all over Australia where the fight for Austral-ian Traditions continued.

The first section about Merro’s parents and youth has relied on the files Merro had deposited in the library; yet initially, I didn’t recognise the character. Although the book evokes so many memories, the John Meredith that McKenry has written about is not the person that John and I had known, especially during the 1960s. McKenry paints a sad, lonely image of Merro, but that is not my recollection; he was certainly a pri-vate and thoughtful man, but he had many friends with whom he shared his philosophies and passions.

Merro began the way he continued through his life. He could be charming or pugnacious yet‘ seemed to have an uncanny ability to establish rapport and be welcomed into the home’. On his return visit, the folk had often thought of further recol-lections.

During 1964, while Merro resided at the Argyle Steps flat, still part of the Rock’s tenements with the eccentric landlady, we enjoyed the tales when we joined him at his retreat in the Bargo brush, at Walden over the weekends. As all the visitors to Walden recalled, Merro was an exceptional host.

There were many shared activities during the day such as sketching, bush walking or reading from his well selected book shelves and playing music, but Merro always did the cooking and brewing. Merro, himself read widely and often had special books that arrived from overseas in discreet wrappings. At night we all shared the delicious meals Merro prepared with wines and long hours of music, song and discussions. We heard of his frustrations with the problems in getting work printed and the obstacles which arose from the various people with whom he had to deal.

In Chapter 13, covering the years 1960-64, the search for a publisher for Folk Songs of Australia and the 1963 visit from Pete Seegar captured some of the complex responses of that period. Seegar was less than welcome in Merro’s opin-ion, because of the domination of the folklore from USA, but Alan Scott did invite him to the BMC in Sept’63. Alan never let John D forget that instead of singing one of his contempo-rary Australian compositions he sang ‘ Yo, ho-ho and a bottle of rum.’!

Mc Kenry deals with the complexities of the changing folk scene and characters involved in it, as well as the complex alliances and feuds.

This was an intense time in the Australian social and politi-cal scene as well as in the cultural scene. There would be different view points about this period and Keith has referred to some of the controversies. Controversy is always good for spawning interest.

The later part tells of Merro’s amazing journeys with friends for collecting versions of folk material and making record-ings for the ANL Oral history collection. Merro made a prac-tice of encouraging others to collect and to write. This is an important section as it indicates the range of material and the people from whom it was collected and why the collections of John Meredith as so valuable to Australia.

In the fight for Australian tradition there are so many more stories and folk who made them, but Keith McKenry has managed to cover a wide range of them and started a sound dialogue, so here’s to extending the knowledge of Australian Tradition and folklore.

cd review

Steadfast - Margaret Walters (margaretwalters.com)

Margaret Walters has been an important stalwart of the folk scene for as long as I can remember. Her contribution to folk music in Australia has been immeasurable, and this should be celebrated and acknowledged at every turn. Her latest CD, Steadfast, is appropriately named, for she has been true to her calling ever since she began singing more than 30 years ago..

Her efforts have been on two main levels: Her warm and unique voice, with its special emphasis on a cappella singing and her own style with its decorations and strong emotional expression, has been heard just about anywhere there is folk music happening in these parts. She has also lent her voice to others, such as her important collaborations with song-writer John Warner and The Roaring Forties.

In addition, she has been a big promoter of folk music in gen-eral. This has been through concerts, festivals and events in which she has participated or has herself instigated, through information-sharing, and through the many informal singing sessions she has tirelessly organized – one way to keep the folk music she so loves alive for everyone. She has taken her singing to England on several occasions, where she has been welcomed, sharing many of our Australian songs with her audiences as well as bringing back to us songs she has heard during her travels.

It is against this backdrop that Steadfast has such a special meaning and role. It is Margaret Walters at her best, a faith-ful showcase of her special voice and style, as well as the range of songs she has collected and sung over the years.

I have often wondered, “Where does she get all these songs?” Many in this CD are quite new to me. They are all presented in her own way, and most feature a traditional sound, even if not actually traditional. Each one is appealing in its own right, and there are little stories and twists to keep our interest. Some of the more serious songs, delivered with emotion and fervour, are towards the end. They creep up on the listener to demand closer attention and are a testament to the social and environmental concerns that permeate much of

Margaret’s singing.

No doubt there are still people around who are surprised to find that unaccompanied singing can be interesting even with-out embellishment from instruments, but Margaret has already shown that it can be successful and she takes it further with Steadfast. Anyone, whatever his or her musical preference, can enjoy this style of singing as she presents it here -- it is definitely not a niche album. Surprisingly, it is even great to have playing in the background – something I normally don’t recommend! But I find it relaxing to put the CD on during the day & just let the vocal sounds & the melodies wash over me.

An attentive listen, of course, is in order and there is a rich variety of themes, sentiments and fine music to reward the discerning listener.

Lovely harmonies from Christina Mimmochi add a new dimension to several of the songs. One of my favourites is a charming ballad by Anne Lister entitled Rosemarie, based on a traditional Flemish song and beautifully adapted. The harmonies add poignancy and sweetness, and I just kept on listening (one of the longer songs) to find out what happened to the heroine – like many of the songs Margaret has chosen, strong womanhood wins out!

If you know Margaret Walters you will be more than satisfied with her latest offering. And if you are not familiar with her work this will be a fine introduction.
