November 7, 1997 Western Regional Center of Excellence holds an institutional meeting at the University of California, Los Angeles.

December 5, 1997 Midwestern Regional Center of Excellence held Strategic Planning Meeting in Chicago, IL.

December 17, 1997 The Project receives the institutional Strategic Plan from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH).

December 24, 1997 CSUDH received $15, 000.00 funding for Year -1 Strategic Planning activities.

December 1997 APA received Eastern Center of Excellence‘s Strategic Plan.

December 31, 1997 Participating institutions returned approximately 1400 surveys to APA for analysis.

January 1998 Research Seminar course and Lecture Series were again offered for the semester at Miami-Dade Community College, Kendall Campus and the University of Miami. Course taught at University of Miami by core team member Victoria Noriega, Ph.D. and Kirsten Thomas, M.S. at Miami-Dade.

January 1998 APA/NIGMS Progress Report submitted to NIGMS.

January 13, 1998 Morgan State University received $15,000.00 funding for Year -1 Strategic Planning activities.

February 1998 CSUDH selected eight students to participate in Scholars program. Four students are African American. Four students are Latino/a/Hispanic.

February 1998 Planning Meeting held by CSUDH to discuss collaborative events held at each of the Western Regional Center of Excellence institutions. CSUDH will hold a collaborative event in February 1999. Santa Monica College will hold an event, March 1999.

February 20, 1998 California State University, Dominguez Hills holds an orientation meeting for institutional APA/NIGMS Project scholars.

February 25, 1998 APA received the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) institutional Strategic Plan.

March 1998 UCLA hires a graduate student to assist with project development and begins recruitment for program participants.

March 2, 1998 Western Regional Center of Excellence holds a Planning Meeting at CSUDH.

March 4, 1998 Southeastern Center of Excellence‘s Psychology Research Initiatives Mentoring Experience (PRIME) project continues its lecture series. Today marks the thirteenth of a series of eighteen lectures on varied scientific research.

March 12 - 14, 1998 Rocky Mountain Region held their Strategic Planning Meeting in Lame Deer, Montana.

March 17, 1998 APA received the Southeastern Regional Center of Excellence‘s Strategic Plan.

March 23, 1998 UCLA received $15,000.00 funding for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities.

March 31, 1998 University of Miami received $15,000.00 funding for Year- 1 Strategic Planning activities.

Spring 1998 A new bio-psychology course held at Truman College. Current project core team leader and core team members teach the course. Class enrollment is 17. Thirteen are ethnic minorities.

Spring 1998 Six students selected from UCLA to participate in the APA/NIGMS Project activities. Four students are Latino/Hispanic, two students are African American.

Spring 1998 The second Psychology 365 class begins at the University of Miami. The course’s purpose is to prepare students to enter careers in the scientific study of psychology, prepare students for the PRIME Summer Grant Program, and assist in early preparation for a major in psychology. The first session had 14 students, 11 were ethnic minorities, the Spring 1998 session had nine students, five were ethnic minorities.

April 1998 Beth Argus, member of the UCLA Core Team attended a budget proposal workshop for schools interested in establishing a Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program. This program is part of the TRIO programs which are federally funded and share many of the same educational opportunity goals as the APA/NIGMS project.

April 1998 Four students from the Eastern Regional Center of Excellence were selected to participate in the Enhancing Research Training Opportunities for Ethnic Minority Student in Psychology (ETEP) summer program held at the University of Maryland, College Park.

April 7, 1998 Prince George’s Community College received $2500.00 to complete their needs assessment surveys.

April 8, 1998 Miami Dade Community College (MDCC), North Campus officially withdraws from the project due to a major reorganization of MDCC. .MDCC, Kendall Campus remains in the project.

April 18, 1998 APA/NIGMS Scholars from the Western Regional Center of Excellence participate in a GRE workshop by Princeton Review hosted by UCLA. The workshop included a practice GRE test, feedback on performance, and suggestions for test taking strategies.

April 20, 1998 University of Maryland received $15,000.000 for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities.

April 20, 1998 Miami Date Community College, Kendall Campus funded $2,500.00 for completion of the needs assessment surveys and $15,000.00 for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities.

April 21, 1998 University of Maryland, College Park received $15,000.00 funding for Year-1 Strategic Planning demonstration activities.

May 1998 Eight students selected to participate in the Summer Mentorship Program from the Southeastern Center of Excellence’s institutions. Mentors selected for each of the PRIME students.

May 1998 Graduate student selected for the PRIME program at the University of Miami. Students will develop research curriculums to be implemented during Summer Mentorship Program with PRIME students.

May 1998 Western Region determines their collaborative project will be called the APA/NIGMS Scholars Program.

May 1998 The second edition of the Pipeline is distributed to approximately 2,000 persons.

May 6, 1998 APA/NIGMS Project hires Nicole Monteiro, MS, as Project Research Assistant.

May 8, 1998 APA/NIGMS Scholars from the Western Regional Center of Excellence, attend the Psychology Research Conference at UCLA.

May 14, 1998 UCLA Behavioral Neuroscience Graduate student presents to CSUDH APA/NIGMS scholars on “Careers in Biobehavioral Neuroscience” at Dominguez Hills.

June 1, 1998 Western Regional Center of Excellence selects six students to participate in the program. Selected are two African Americans and four Chicana/Latinas. Orientation for students held June 22, 1998.

June 1 - August 7, 1998 The Southeastern Region Center’s Psychology Research Initiatives Mentorship Experience (PRIME) Summer Research Program begins at the University of Miami. Ten students, recruited from all three participating institutions, participate in the 10-week summer session.

June 1, 1998 ETEP Summer Fellowship at the University of Maryland, College Park begins.

June 5, 1998 SGU met with the core team between USD and SGU regarding telecommunications possibilities between the three institutions.

June 16, 1998 APA receives Santa Monica College’s institutional Strategic Plan.

June 22, 1998 APA/NIGMS Scholars from the Western Center of Excellence attend a project orientation workshop.

July 1998 UCLA organized “Graduate School in Psychology” workshop for APA/NIGMS Scholars and Summer Research Program participants.

July 1, 1998 Santa Monica received $15,000.00 for Year - 1 Strategic Planning activities.

July 6, 1998 APA receives the Midwestern Regional Center of Excellence’s Strategic Plan.

July 13 - 17, 1998 Summer Public Health Research Videoconference and Institute on Minority Health held at Truman College. The project is sponsored by: the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill School of Public Health, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology, Department of Maternal and Child Health, Center for Distance Learning and in collaboration with the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Association of Schools of Public Health. APA/NIGMS Project supports the institution’s participation.

July 15, 1998 Project Core team faculty, other invited faculty, and ETEP program participants from the Eastern Regional Center of Excellence participate in a brown bag conversation hour at University of Maryland, Department of Psychology. ETEP student participants present an overview of current research projects.

July 23, 1998 - Fall Semester 1998

Chicago State received $15,000.00 funding for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities. Biopsychology class was taught at Truman College. Twenty-four students enroll in the course. Thirteen of the 24 students are ethnic minorities.

Fall 1998 Psychology 365 taught at University of Miami class begins. Seventeen students enrolled in the course. Eleven of the 17 are ethnic minorities.

August 1998 DKMC collaborated with Student Support Services to sponsor orientation activities for incoming DKMC students. DKMC distributed packets of University of South Dakota Psychology and Human Services Programs to all student Advisors for recruiting and career information purposes.

August 10, 1998 Truman College received $15,000.000 funding for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities.

August 16, 1998 Project holds a luncheon meeting during the APA Annual Convention in San Francisco, California to discuss institutional updates and other relevant project information. Approximately 20 core team members participated in meeting.

September 1998 Chicago State University opens the Life Sciences Center.

September 1998 CSUDH and Santa Monica College program participants attend a collaborative lab visit at UCLA.

September 1998 DKMC collaborated with Student Support Services to sponsor student mentoring and tutoring support through newly organized Student Learning Support Center on DKMC campus. Support continued throughout Fall Semester 1998. (August 1998 -- December 1998).

September 1, 1998 CSUDH identified new students for their APA/NIGMS Scholars program.

September 3, 1998 Request for supplemental funding submitted to NIGMS for Planning Conference.

September 11, 1998 CSUDH held orientation meeting with APA/NIGMS Scholars.

September 19, 1998 APA received Rocky Mountain Strategic Plan.

September 21, 1998 APA was notified that supplemental funding was awarded from NIGMS for the National Planning conference.

October 1998 CSUDH hires a graduate student to assist with the project.

October 1998 UCLA initiated additional recruitment activities to identify two additional participants for their project.

October 1998 UCLA identified all African American and Latino/Hispanic psychology majors with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.

October 1998 UCLA hosts a collaborative site visit for the Western Regional Center of Excellence.

October 1998 UCLA students are matched with faculty mentors. Students signed an Acceptance Agreement stating that they would work a minimum of eight hours a week on research from October 1, 1998 through June 10, 1999. Students also completed a Learning Contract with the assistance of their mentor.

October 1998 APA Staff initiates work on competitive renewal of grant application.

October 1998 Students from the Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence attend Red Road Retreat in Vermillion, South Dakota.

October 1998 DKMC purchased recruiting supplies to enhance recruiting efforts. Recruiting personnel provided with specific information regarding opportunities in biomedical research and human services.

October 1998 DKMC formed an informal student group to discuss student needs on campus, including learning environment, student resources, staff and personnel as resources, cultural inclusion in curriculum, etc. This group met periodically throughout Fall semester 1998.

October 1, 1998 The Southeastern Regional Center of Excellence’s first of six PRIME Lectures begins for the Fall semester.

October 5, 1998 APA/NIGMS Project hired Grant Writer, Beverly Lyles.

October 5, 1998 University of South Dakota, Sinte Gleska University and Dull Knife Memorial College received $15,000.00 for Year-1 Strategic Planning activities.

October 9, 1998 Core Team Leaders of the Western Regional Center of Excellence meet to discuss the progress of the APA/NIGMS program at SMC.

October 14, 1998 APA/NIGMS Project hired Conference Planner, Wanda Robinson to organize and coordinate Planning Conference.

October 16 - 18, 1998 SGU attend Red Road Retreat in Vermillion, South Dakota.

October 19, 1998 APA/NIGMS Project held a Planning Conference meeting at APA.

October 23, 1998 UCLA held a collaborative workshop for APA/NIGMS Scholars Program Participants. Fifteen students and faculty from UCLA and CSUDH participated in lab visit/workshop and discussion of research and graduate school.

November 1998 Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence mails first issue of “Psych on the Rise” newsletter.

November 1998 UCLA program participants attend a seminar on careers in biobehavioral research related to psychology. Speakers include faculty from the Health Psychology and Clinical Psychology area.

November 13, 1998 CSUDH project held a workshop on graduate school admission and application process. Dr. Michael Laurent, from CSUDH’s Student Development presents.

November 18, 1998 Truman College and Chicago State University held an Open House at Truman College.

November 30, 1998 SGU held a “Meet the Instructors and Students” gathering in the Human Service Department.

December 1998 Florida International University reaffirms project participation and provides APA a project update and overview.

December 2, 1998 A regional teleconference took place with Health and Mental Health Directors of four Bemidji Area reservations so that practicum sites can be developed for Rocky Mountain Regional participating Native American students. Subsequent site visits planned for January 1999.

December 5, 1998 Graduate student assistant for the UCLA APA/NIGMS Project held a “hands-on” graduate school application preparation workshop.

December 11 - 13, 1998 The project’s Invitational National Conference “Planning for the Future: Ethnic Minorities in the Biomedical Sciences” held in Washington, D.C. Attendance totaled 65 people that included Core Team Leaders from each the 15 participating institutions, Core Team Members, the Project‘s Lead Consultants and four distinguished observers. Clifton Poodry, PhD provided the opening address.

December 22, 1998 APA initiates appropriate paperwork for Year-2 funding for the participating institutions.

January 1999 DKMC placed psychology Graduate Student from the University of Montana on its campus throughout Spring Semester 1999 as an intern.

January 1999 Local tribal community members utilized as guest presenters in DKMC Course.

January 1999 Students invited to attend START seminars at Prince George’s Community College to be held during the Winter 1999 and Spring 1999 quarters (January 1999 - June 1999).

January 1, 1999 USD initiated work with four potential reservation placement sites for Native American graduate students in clinical psychology in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

January 14 - May 6 PSYC690 was co-taught by USD Core Team Leader and the Director of USD’s Alcohol & Drug Studies Program for clinical psychology graduate students interested in working with Native American communities.

January 15, 1999 Dr. Hector Myers, Core Team Leader for UCLA held a workshop on writing statements of purpose for graduate school admission.

January 26, 1999 CSUDH received second demonstration grant for $15,000.00.

January 28, 1999 The University of California, Los Angeles, Miami-Dade Community College, Kendall Campus, Morgan State University and the University of Miami received their second project demonstration grant for $15,000.00.

January 30, 1999 UCLA students required to complete first draft of their statement of purpose. Students receive written feedback from the graduate student coordinator and graduate assistant.

February 1999 UCLA identified a total of eleven students for their APA/NIGMS Honors Program.

February 1999 CSUDH paid stipends to all nine scholars following their satisfactory completion of project requirements.

February 1, 1999 CSUDH identified a new student for APA/NIGMS Honors Program.

February 1, 1999 APA submits competitive renewal application for the APA/NIGMS Project.

February 3, 1999 UCLA students are invited to attend a workshop and tour sponsored by the UCLA Resource Center.

February 6, 1999 Interested students at UCLA, CSUDH, and SMC participate in a GRE workshop offered by Princeton Review.

February 11, 1999 UCLA selected eleven students to participate in the APA/NIGMS Program.

February 11, 1999 UCLA initiated the development of a database of African American and Latino psychology students.

February 18, 1999 Sinte Gleska Core Team members and students participated in a recruitment program at St. Francis Indian School and Todd County high school, both local tribal schools.

February 25, 1999 Chicago State University receives second demonstration grant for $15,000.00.

February 25 - 26, 1999 Rocky Mountain Regional Center held a retreat in Rapid City, SD.

February 26, 1999 Planning meeting held for the Western Region. At the meeting it was decided that CSUDH would prepare a regional pamphlet for the APA/NIGMS Program and that UCLA would begin preparing a regional newsletter.

February 26, 1999 CSUDH held a Collaborative Event for the Western Region. Dr. Silva Santos presented on “Mental Health Distress and Mexican Immigrants” and Dr. Michael Laurent presented “Careers in Psychology.”

February 26 - 27, 1999 SGU Core members and USD’s Core Team members met at the Holiday Inn in Rapid City to plan the agenda for AIHEC presentation, the June Mentor Course/Workshop to be held at USD, and a logo design from the Rocky Mountain group.

February 28, 1999 CSUDH hosted a collaborative event for UCLA and SMC students. Dr. Silvia Santos presented her research on acculturative stress and Mexican immigrant families.

March 1999 UCLA initiates work to develop a listserv for all APA/NIGMS program participants and core team members.

March - April, 1999 CSUDH APA/NIGMS Scholars were offered SPSS Workshops. Nine students participated.

March 4, 1999 The University of Maryland received their second grant for project demonstration activities for $15,000.00.

March 12, 1999 SGU faculty members participated in high school recruitment program, local tribal school.

March 16, 1999 Sinte’s institutional team prepares and manages SGU’s Human Service Club’s Inipi (sweat lodge).

March 19, 1999 UCLA held a workshop on presenting and attending research conferences for their project students.

March 21 - 24, 1999 Members of the Rocky Mountain Regional Center participated and/or presented at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) in Billings, Montana. Faculty, undergraduates, and high school students mentored by the project attended. Delegates from all three institutions participated.

March 25, 1999 Karen Gunn, PhD, Core Team Leader for SMC participated in SMC’s Black Collegians Program to recruit students into the APA/NIGMS New Scholars in Psychology Program (NSPP).

March 29, 1999 SGU held a “Meet the Instructors and Students” luncheon in the Human Service Department. Ten staff, faculty and 30 students attend.

Spring 1999 Second issue of the Vermillion High School Native American students’ newsletter “Psych on the Rise” is published and sent to all reservation high school students in the region.

Spring 1999 USD Student Life Department established a graduate assistantship position to collect information related to the retention needs of Native American students on the USD campus.

April 1999 DKMC held its annual Career Fair. Educational and Career opportunity booth provided by DKMC Psychology students.

April 1999 SGU hired a consultant to work on developing an interactive technology link between the three Rocky Mountain Regional institutions.

April 1999 Five of the participating APA/NIGMS CSUDH Scholars participate in poster presentations at the Western Psychological Association Convention in Irvine, California. Eight students attended the meeting.

April 1999 Princeton Review conducted a free GRE Practice Test and Review Session that was open to all psychology majors at CSUDH. Fifty students attended.

April 8, 1999 SGU held a culturally-relevant presentation to students on alcohol and drug abuse in the Native American community.

September 1999 Dr. Maria Hurtado-Ortiz was recruited to participate as a new core team member for California State University, Dominguez’s core team. Dr. Hurtado-Ortiz is a developmental psychologist.

March 30 - 31, 2001 The 4th Annual Building Bridges Conference entitled “Walking with Balance: Integrating Biculturalism in Education” was held at the University of South Dakota. More than 150 Native American high school and college students, teachers, and community members attended from across South Dakota and Nebraska.

Spring 2001 UCLA held a one-day Princeton Review GRE workshop for all students. The review included a mock test, evaluation of students’ performance, and discussion of strategies for taking a computerized GRE. CSUDH and SMC students were invited to attend this event.

Spring 2001 UCLA PROPS students are required to meet with Program Coordinator and Graduate Mentor on a quarterly basis to discuss academic progress and planning.

May 15, 2001 The APA/NIGMS Project awards supplemental funding to FIU, The Rocky Mountain Region, Prince George’s Community College and Morgan State and UCLA. The four awards total approximately $30, 000 and will provide special funding for the development of institutional/regional special projects and activities focused on tracking of students or the development of tracking procedures/software, evaluation of project activities and outcomes and other identified special activities.

May 27, 2001 Dr. Sherry Palamara of MDCC presented the fifth in the PRIME lecture series, “Biomedical Research in Psychology”. Eight students attend the lecture.

Spring Quarter 2001 Rocky Mountain Regional Institution FBC holds weekly faculty and student luncheon and meetings were held throughout the quarter to establish and maintain relationships among students, faculty, student families and staff. A variety of career, academic activities occurred during these meetings.

Spring & Summer 2001 Seven students majoring in Human Service and Allied Health at Ft. Belknap College attended a total of ten biomedical research conferences throughout the country.

Summer 2001 Eight FIU students are selected to participate in the PRIME program for a 15-week during Summer C Session. Students enroll in PSY 4616 and PSY 4930 - Research methodology and Graduate School preparation taught by Core Team Member Dr. Bennet Schwartz. Five Hispanic students were selected and three African-American students.

Summer 2001 MDCC offered SLS 1401 Psychology for Career Adjustment and ISS 1935 Social Science Seminar for MDCC admitted to the PRIME Summer Internship. A total of eight students completed both courses at MDCC.

Marks the first of a series of nine Noon Presentations focusing on Native American health and wellness topics with different guest speakers sponsored by Sinte Gleska’s Core Team. A total of 382 students, faculty, staff and individuals from the community attend these weekly presentations.

March 29, 2002 UM developed Just for University of Miami Psychology Students To Accelerate Research Training (JUMP START) to respond to the growing number of students who were interested in PRIME but who did not have all of the prerequisite courses.

Spring 2002 SMC NSPP Program identifies eight new students to participate in the Program. Five are Latino(a)/Hispanic and three are Black. Eight students from the previous year remained with the program. All students participate in monthly four-hour program meetings during the regular semester. During 2001-2002 academic year, the students met 12 times.

Spring 2002 UCLA held a Celebratory Breakfast at the end of the year. Faculty and graduate students, sponsors, speakers and other interested individuals were invited to attend. Participating students’ posters were displayed at the breakfast.

Spring 2002 UCLA administers first large-scale e-mail questionnaire mailing to UCLA alumni from funding received throughout the APA/NIGMS Supplemental award. Fifty-five percent of alumni contacted provided information for the database.

April 2002 Twenty-two Truman Community College students visit CSU and tour the Life Science Center, were provided information on careers in psychology, summer research internships offered by CSU, and toured the chemistry and psychology departments.

April 2002 Scholar Juan Madera at CSUDH was accepted into nine programs in organizational psychology and two PhD programs in counseling psychology.

April 2002 CSUDH Scholar Angel Holliday accepted into Master’s Program in School Counseling at CSUDH.

April 5 - 6, 2002 Building Bridges Conference held in the Rocky Mountain Region. One hundred Native American high school and college students attend.

April 8, 2002 UCLA PROPS students participate in a three-part series GRE workshop. Each section emphasized a different section of the GRE. Sessions occurred April 8th, 15th and 22nd.

April 11, 2002 CSU’s Department of Psychology held its 4th Annual Spring Colloquium entitled “Spring Colloquium 2002: The ABC’s of Trauma.” Carl Bell was the keynote speaker. Three-hundred students attend the event.

April 11, 2002 More than 50 students attend a GRE and graduate school preparation seminar conducted by Dr. Andre Halliburton at CSU as part of the Spring Colloquium, coordinated through the CSU Life Science Center.

April 15, 2002 Prince George’s Community College held the 4th START conference. Dr. Kimberly Jefferies-Leonard from MayaTech provided the keynote address on establishing a research career. More than 200 students attended the event from local high schools and colleges. Fall 2002 Five UM faculty members donated their time to give lectures to students for the Regional Lecture Series. During the Spring semester, six UM professors donated their time.

Fall 2002 A 30-page Research Manual was updated describing all psychology faculty research at the University of Miami. Over 200 copies were made and distributed to 100 new freshman psychology majors at UM, and used to encourage them to become involved in research early in their undergraduate careers. Copies were also disseminated to High School teachers, prospective students, and other interested parties.

Fall 2002 CSUDH selected two new students to participate in the APA/Scholars Program. With the eight continuing students, the program totals 10 participants.

Fall 2002 Annette Ford and Angela Williams, both former SMC NSPP students transfer to California State University, Long Beach.

April 2004 PGCC’s 5th Annual START Conference is held at PGCC. More than 250 students participate by presenting their research that includes students from PGCC, local colleges and high schools.

April 2004 The Annual Mae P. Claytor/Martin D. Jenkins research conference is held at Morgan State University. The event attracts more than 100 attendees including students, faculty and invited guests.

April 2004 Several FIU PRIME 2003 Fellows participate and present in FIU’s Psi Chi conference.

April 2, 2004 CSU holds the first National Research Conference entitled “Urban Living and Mental Health” for graduate and undergraduate research students.

April 14, 2004 Week #2 for UCLA PROPS students continues with “Careers in Mark Research” and Research Perspectives in Psychology” presented by May Levinson, PhD and Stephen Engel, PhD respectively.

April 19-22, 2004 Wellness Week presentations attracts more than 230 students’ participation in presentations focusing on issues on Native American issues, traditions, mental and spiritual health. The event is sponsored by SGU.

April 29, 2004 CSU hosts the Annual Psychology Department Colloquium. The all-day event provides students the opportunity to interact with diverse professionals as well as partake in presentations and seminars. Dr. Joseph L.. White was the keynote speaker. Two hundred fifty students participated in the event. Awards were presented to students for their outstanding research.

May 2004 - August 2004 FIU PRIME Fellows initiate their summer research projects with identified mentors. Selected are six students, all Hispanic students, five females, one male. MDC students who participate at FIU include one Hispanic/Latina, and three Hispanic/Latino males.

May 5, 2004 UCLA’s five-week Spring Semester continues with Tony Scinta, Graduate Mentor presenting “Research Presentation Tips and Discussions of Research Papers” for PROPS students.

May 6, 2004 Morgan State University holds its annual Martin D. Jenkins/Mae P. Claytor Undergraduate Research Conference. Dr. James Jones, APA/NIGMS Co-Investigator presents the keynote address. The event attracts approximately 200 students each year.

May 19-June 2, 2004 PROPS students make their respective research presentations as part of their required activities as a participating PROPS student.

May 28-30, 2004 Red Road Gathering for Eagle Butte Community/Cheyenne River Reservation is held. Approximately 150 attendees participate in the event which is also attended by USD’s CIA members, USD faculty and UCS graduate students.

Summer 2004 Three Native American high school students participated as part of the Research Apprentice Program (RAP) a 6-week, 30 hours/week work in psychology research (June 6-July 13, 2004. Students made poster presentations at the end of their stint. Core Team Leader Dr. Todd-Bazemore, Native American graduate students as well as Dr. Mark Daniels participated in the event.

June 2004 For the past year, the LSC with the assistance of Core Team Leader Dr. Ivy Dunn continues to conduct GRE workshops and graduate school preparation workshops for the year that focuses on the application processes and writing graduate school essays.

June 6 - July 13, 2004 USD participates in the Research Apprentice Program where three Native American high school students engage in early research. The program is held at USD.

June 9, 2004 Week 10 of the PROPS seminars culminates in a commencement breakfast for all student participants.

Fall 2004 UCLA conducted outreach efforts and held two information sessions in the Department of Psychology for potential students.

Fall 2004 Through CSU’s Life Science Center, more than 100 students visited the LSC. The Center provides information on scholarships, internships, careers in psychology and graduate programs, as well as maintaining a database of student project activities. The LSC manager also coordinates students and faculty seeking research.

Fall 2004 Students from UCLA PROPS program meet individually with Graduate Student Mentor to discuss and facilitate the identification of faculty sponsors for their future research.

Fall 2004 Eight students (seven Latino/a, one African American) are selected for PROPS program beginning in January 2005 at UCLA.

Fall 2004 CSU’s mentoring program, initially conducted through the NIGMS project is institutionalized through an external grant from the State of Illinois as part of funding focused to improve retention and graduation rates. The two-year grant provided cash bonuses for student mentors and mentees received free laptops. To date sixty students have been mentored through the application of Dr. Ivy Dunn, Core Team Leader and Rachel W. Lindsey, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

UM continues to hold its 10-week summer PRIME project. Seventeen UM students participated this summer. Five students from MDC participated as affiliates in the summer PRIME. Students worked with their research mentor for 20 hours per week and met with both the Director of the Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Victoria Noriega and their two graduate student supervisors. The 10-week session provides information to students ranging from poster session and development to GRE overview for prospective graduate students. All UM PRIME students are required to make a research poster presentation at the end of the 10-week session.

Fall 2005 Each academic year, since the inception of the Life Science Center at Chicago State University, approximately 100 students visit the center which is funded by the APA/NIGMS grant. The LSC provides students information on scholarships, internships, careers in psychology and graduate program information as well as informs students seeking research opportunities available through faculty members who are seeking research assistants for their respective grants.

Fall 2005 Truman Community College( TCC) initiates grant recruitment for students enrolled in CALFS or Center for Advancement in the Life Sciences Program. Students participate in weekly meetings to discuss goals, plans, student progress and receive advising. A total of twelve ethnic minority students participate in identified activities designed to assist and aid students in critical science courses, are provided information on internships and general information pertaining to biomedical, behavioral and psychological work and research.

Fall 2005 Truman reestablishes its Bio-Psychology course this fall. Mr. Greg Robinson from the Department of Psychology co-teaches this course.

Fall 2005 CSU through the LSC, formed a collaborative relationship with the Center of Urban Mental Health Research, a new research institute at CSU. September 30, 2005 Orientation held for the SMC NSPP Project. Three students attend Nine meetings held throughout the 2005-06 Academic year which attracted a total of 10 consistent attendees. The four-hour meetings consist of learning forums, advising and personal assessments, and mentoring sessions from the NSPP coordinator or core team members.

October 3, 2005 OEMA prepares and submits “The Academic TRANSITIONS Project,” a competitive grant application, in response to HRSA’s Pathways to Health Professions Program RFP. The TRANSITIONS project used the APA/NIGMS Project as a model for providing mentorship and support at key transition points between high school and post-secondary education, 2-year institution and 4-year institution transfer, and 4-year institution and advanced degree programs. During the review process, the Pathways grant program was suspended due to budget constraints.

October 5, 2005 Truman students participate in weekly Science Club meetings initiating on October 5.

October 8, 2005 Morgan State University receives Year-1 for $19,300 for completion of activities associated with project requirements.

October 14, 2005 The annual Mid-Atlantic Teachers of Psychology Conference is held. Dr. Stephen Chew, Professor and Chair of Samford University’s Department of Psychology presented the keynote. PGCC sponsored the event whose theme was engaging students in research. Both high school and college faculty attended the event.

October 20, 2005 SGU sponsors student wellness training for community presentations. Seven students participate.

October 21, 2005 SMC holds NSPP meeting. Six students participate in the informational meeting. Orientation packets were distributed as well as student assignments exploring psychology as a major.

October 21, 2005 Chicago State University holds a meeting with incoming Core Team Leaders to discuss the future projects of the region. Topics include new grant personnel, identification of a potential startup problems, collaborative programs and ideas, student tracking, and future regional meetings.

October 22-24, 2005 Red Road Gathering is held at USD. The annual event, which focuses on issues of spiritual, mental and physical health addressing Native Americans, provides workshops to more than 350 Native Americans.

October 2006 OEMA conducts the 2006 APA/NIGMS Project Evaluation Survey. 13 out of 14 institutions complete and return the survey, which asked about the success and impact of specific aspects of the project, as well as the institutions’ general satisfaction. Overall satisfaction with the project was high, with a total mean of 4.5 out of 5.0.

January 10 - March 14, 2007 Eighteen student participants at UCLA met for the weekly seminars and panel discussions that made up the Winter quarter of the PROPS program. Topics included the graduate school application process, research ethics, and careers in psychology.

January 17, 2007 OEMA prepares and submits Revised Renewal Application in response to the denial of funding of the January 2006 grant application. Funding of this application was denied.

April 4 - June 6, 2007 During the Spring quarter of the PROPS program, 18 UCLA students attended weekly seminars. Seminar topics included GRE preparation, advance degree program alternatives, and research presentation methods. During the second half of the quarter, students delivered presentations of their research.

May 2007 Seven CSUDH students travel to Vancouver, Canada to present posters at the Western Psychological Association Convention.

Summer 2007 UM conducts its annual PRIME Summer Program, where students work closely with a faculty mentor and other members of the faculty’s research team for ten weeks on an individual research project, and attend weekly career and skill development meetings. 17 students participated.

July 26, 2007 The UM PRIME Summer Program culminates in its closing ceremony, including student research poster presentations. Students, faculty, and participants’ friends and families attend.

August 2007 OEMA publishes the sixth issue of the Pipeline newsletter. The cover story, titled “Project Perspectives,” describes the experience of FIU student, Tiffany Brannon, as an APA/NIGMS Project participant. After graduating with honors and being awarded a Ford Fellowship, Brannon enrolled in a Social Psychology PhD program at Stanford University. She largely credited her success to the mentorship she received.

August 19, 2007 OEMA hosts the Annual APA/NIGMS Project Directors’ Meeting during the 2007 APA Annual Convention in San Francisco, California. The breakfast meeting offered project core team members, mentors, and students an opportunity to provide updates activities and network with each other.

Students were asked to rate their satisfaction with their experience with their mentor and with the project, as a whole. Each of the 32 student respondent received an incentive of $9.99. Spring 2008 UMD welcomes three new students (2 Black females and 1 Black male) to its ETEP program. The students joined the laboratory research teams of Drs. Sandra Gordon-Salant, Jens Herberholz, and Stephen David.

Funding of this application was subsequently denied. Consequently, additional activities and use of remaining funds took place under an Extension of Time Only.

May 18, 2008 UM hosts kick-off brunch and orientation for the PRIME Summer Research Program. 14 students attended.

May 22-25, 2008 CSUDH student, Denise Manquero, travels to Chicago, Illinois to present at the Association for Psychological Science’s Annual Convention. The presentation was titled, “Beliefs about Diabetes among at-risk Latino students.”

Summer 2008 FIU partners with the McNair Scholarship Program to offer its summer research program. Drs. Leslie Frazier, Dionne Stephens, Ryan Winter, Wendy Silverman, Bill Kurtines, Marilyn Montgomery, and Lorraine Bahrick offered intensive research mentoring. Eleven students (10 Hispanic/Latina female and 1 Black female) participate, five of whom were also named McNair Scholars.

June 2 - July 25, 2008 CSUDH conducts its annual summer research program that provides psychology undergraduates with intensive mentored research experience, graduate school preparation, workshops on psychology careers, and a stipend. Drs. Ramona Davis, Mark Carrier, Maria Hurtado-Ortiz, Keisha Paxton, Carl Sneed, Silvia Santos, and Tara Victor offered mentorship to 10 primary students (5 Hispanic/Latinos females, 1 Hispanic/Latino male, 4 black females).

July 7-18, 2008 Truman offered its Biopsychology Workshop. The program included a two-week intensive classroom, and literature and laboratory research experience. Students worked with bullfrogs as specimens for a variety of experiments. Seven students (3 Black females, 1 Asian male, 1 Asian female, 1 Hispanic/Latino male, 1 Caucasian female) participated in the program.

March 2009 Seventeen UCLA students present at the University’s Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference in Los Angeles, California.

April 6, 2009 FIU sends acceptance letters to the six 2009 PRIME Fellows (3 Hispanic/Latina female, 2 Hispanic/Latino males, and 1 Black female), notifying them of their acceptance into the summer research program, requirements for participation, and the $1000 stipend.

Summer 2009 FIU offers its Summer Psychology Fellowship. Drs. Bill Kurtines, Lorraine Bahrick, Gordon Finley, Daniel Wright, and Bennett Schwartz offered intensive research mentoring. Six students participate.

Summer 2009 UM conducts its annual PRIME Summer Program, where students work closely with a faculty mentor and other members of the faculty’s research team for ten weeks on an individual research project, and attend weekly career and skill development meetings. 22 students participated.

Summer 2009 UCLA hosts its Summer Research Program, which offers students a $3000 stipend along with the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on research projects, obtain research skills, define academic interests and objectives, and become an active member of the UCLA research community. Five students (including 4 Hispanic/Latina females and 1 Black female) were mentored by Drs. Caroline Crump, Catherine Sandhofer, Nim Tottenham, Scott Johnson, and Robert Bjork.

May 20, 2009 UM hosts kick-off brunch and orientation for the PRIME Summer Research Program. 22 students attended.

May 22-25, 2009 CSUDH students, Lauren Lewis and Denise Manquero, travel to San Francisco, California to present at the Association for Psychological Science’s Annual Convention. The presentation was titled, “Acculturation, gender, and health indicators among at-risk Latino students for Diabetes. “

June 2009 OEMA awards competitive grants of up to $15,000 for summer programming to UCLA, FIU, and UM.

July 23, 2009 The UM PRIME Summer Program culminates in its closing ceremony, including student research poster presentations. Students, faculty, and participants’ friends and families attend.
