PRINCIPAL’S NOTES I am pleased to say that the major excursion last week to Bathurst and the snow fields was a fantastic success. Everyone found the Bathurst Goldfields very interesting doing such things as panning for gold and seeing a real working blacksmith shop and steam engine, powered historical mining machinery all working as they were over a century ago. We had a great sing along around the campfire before retiring for the night. Before leaving Bathurst the bus did the lap around Mt. Panorama as well as stopping for a visit to the National Motor Sports Museum. Tuesday night saw us arrive at Cooma, where we all went to be fitted for our snow gear (skis, boots, pants, jackets and helmets) before settling into the new motel. Everyone was very excited about the next day at the snow. The snow fields didn’t disappoint. Many students went from seeing snow for the first time in their lives, to being able to ski down the small beginners slope by the end of the first day, with those with more experience having their lessons up the chairlifts and down the nearby slopes. That evening, everyone had a great time as our motel host arranged karaoke as well as pool and table tennis competitions with fellow patrons from Korea and Indonesia. The second day at the snow saw everyone progressing with additional lessons. Unfortunately some rain appeared making things a little uncomfortable for some students, seeing more and more students congregate in the kiosk area out of the cold. However, skiing was still fine for the brave with most students progressing to be taken by their instructors either up the slopes or even over to further slopes. Unfortunately, the snow set in and we had to leave earlier than planned to ensure that the bus was able to get out. That night the entertainment was Mendooran’s Got Talent, with students showing plenty of nerve and a sprinkling of talent to provide a great night’s entertainment. I am pleased to say that the whole excursion went without injury or major incident. All students showed exemplary behaviour and manners, often receiving positive comments from our hosts and bus driver. We would all like to thank Mr Bearman for organising a wonderful excursion. I would also like to conclude by commending Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Finemore, Mr Burke and Mr Hollingworth not only for spending the week away from their families to manage the excursion, but also for the calm and friendly nature that they showed in all situations to ensure that a great time was had by all.

YEAR 2/3/4/5 NEWS Welcome back to our Year 4 snow travellers! We all missed you and our class was so quite without you! This week we will complete our CWA poster, where we are researching Timor Lest. In Maths for the remainder of the term we will be concentrating on subtraction and times tables. Remember Year 2-you need to know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and Year 3 and 4 should be able to master 2,5,10 times tables now as well as getting to know their 3,4, and 6 times tables and up! Handwriting has been particularly pleasing with Mrs Waters presenting Principal awards to many in our class. I am very happy that most Homework and Home reading has been handed in regularly and any student who reads more than either 3 Home readers or a chapter book per week will receive 2 win bins per book. If you have any soft cardboard rolls eg: from alfoil, gladwrap, paper towel etc please send them in ASAP- we need to pot up seedlings. # Thankyou to every student in the class who now have their own pencil case and equipment! For art we have been learning about Aboriginal Dot paintings. These paintings have formed the border on our wall display for our patchwork quilt entitled ‘Being Australian’ for our COGS unit. We have almost completed our Fathers Day presents and the students can’t wait to give it to them!

SSSHHH! This is something we are making Dad for Father’s Day! Have a great week!

ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITY SPORT PROGRAM Active After School Community Sport Program will hold its last session for the term this Thursday afternoon from 3.10-4.30pm. Last week students enjoyed a range of putt putt golf activities under the COLA with only a few students managing a hole in one around the golf course. Students will remain at the school this week as we continue our golf program. We look forward to seeing all our healthy active participants Thursday!

YEAR 4/5/6 NEWS Welcome back to all those lucky individuals that went on the excursion last week. Everyone in my class is so excited and are all trying to recount funny incidents - the noise levels go up! Obviously everyone had a truly great time, but we are also very happy that everyone came home safely with a heap of new and exciting experiences under their belts. While the excursion people were away those of us left at school had a great week – the students left in my room had some wonderful experiences mentoring younger students and helping other teachers. We all enjoyed the week and we also learned a lot. This week we will slowly ease back into our normal routine. Our COGS units are progressing well, and our FOR activities – Readers’ Theatre - are into the final stages of production. Ask your child about our plays and maybe receive an invitation to watch! At this stage we are planning to deliver our plays in class for dress rehearsal and final production at the Primary Assembly on Wednesday. All are welcome. May I share a thought with you that was a piece of sage advice I received years ago regarding my own children. ‘In twenty years will your child remember that you did a great job (shopping? cleaning? lamb marking? whatever) or will they remember you coming to their school and respecting and encouraging their efforts?

The next four weeks have a lot of events planned. The Year 12 students have their Trial HSC examinations later this week. Transition meetings are planned for: Year 10-11 on the 4th September and Year 6-7 on the 12th September. A flier went home last week to endeavour to find the preferred time for these meetings. COMMUNITY NEWS BINNAWAY/BARADINE/COONAMBLE 16’S RUGBY LEAGUE

TEAM The team includes Mendooran Central School students: Steven Leask; Robert Austin; John Monk and Jamie Sharpe.

Twenty boys, aged from 14 to 16, from eleven different towns all combined to make up this year’s Binnaway/Baradine/Coonamble 16s rugby league team. This team consists of Graham Adams, Wyatte Andrews, William Hay, Lewis Varty, Jacob Murray, Dean Evans (Baradine), Tray Blattman, Cody Canham (Coonamble), Jokota Bowling (Gwabegar), Travis Couley (Wee Waa), William Hain (New Mollyan), James Harris (Coonabarabran), Robert Austin, John Monk, Steven Leask and Jamie Sharpe (Mendooran), Albert Nolan (Neilrex), Evan Ryan (Gulargambone), Saxon Whipper (Binnaway) and Joe Bowen (Weetaliba). Being a bit rusty throughout the competition games, winning just two games out of eight, they are coming good when it really matters – during the final games. On Saturday 25th August, they came up against Coolah/Dunedoo in the minor semi-finals, an opponent which they hadn’t defeated previously, and won 10-4, allowing them to move on to the major semi-finals, coming up against Gilgandra in Gulgong on the 1st September. Coaches Peter Leask, of Mendooran, and Rupert Thorpe, of Baradine, are both extremely proud of the boys’ efforts, sighting obvious difficulties in getting together for training, due to their variation in hometowns, as a hindrance in their 2012 campaign. The side has exceeded Group XIV’s expectations in making it to the final three, being up there with Coonabarabran and Gilgandra. Well done so far boys and we wish you the best for the remainder of the finals series!
