What is Ramadan?

❑ The 9th month of the Islamic calendar

❑ The month when Qur’an was revealed to

the Holy Prophet sa for the first time.

❑ As the Qur’an was revealed during the month of

Ramadan, we should try even harder than

normal to read it regularly and try and

understand its meaning.

❑ During this month, Muslims are commanded to

fast from dawn till dusk.

o However, should Atfal be fasting?

“The month of Ramadan is that in which the

Qur’an was sent down as a guidance for

mankind with clear proofs of guidance and

discrimination. Therefore, whosoever of you is

present at home in this month, let him fast

therein. But whoso is sick or is on a journey, shall

fast the same number of other days. Allah

desires to give you facility and He desires not

hardship for you, and that you may complete

the number, and that you may exalt Allah for His

having guided you and that you may be

grateful.”

❑ Read Surah Baqarah, verse 186:

The following account from Hazrat Musleh Mauood (ra) sheds

some light on who should fast

The example of Promised Messiah

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, the son of the Promised

Messiah, states that:

“To make a child younger than 12 years old is a crime

in my eyes. In addition, to make a child of age 12 to

15 is simply a mistake. Children older than 15 should

be encouraged to fast every now and then, while after

the age of 18 we should deem fasting compulsory.”

“When we (the children of the Promised Messiah)

were young, we also wanted to fast during Ramadan

but the Promised Messiah would never let fast. Rather

he always tried to instil the purpose and status of

fasting in us so that we had respect for fasting”

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, then states that:

“These age guidelines he had given should obviously

be varied according to the physical growth of the

child as a child may be 16 years of age, but

physically it may be of an equivalent age of say a 14

year old. It is quite wrong to assume that forcing a

young child, of say eight years of age, to fast will

earn the parents any reward. On the contrary, it will

invite God’s displeasure."

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam

Ahmad Qadiani (AS)

What can we learn from

this extract?

It is not compulsory on young children (Atfal) to fast

for the whole month. One alternative is to fast once

A. Spiritual benefit

B. To ask for forgiveness

C. To seek the right path

D. Physical benefit

❑ Whom does it benefit?

A. Does Allah benefit from our sacrifice or

is it actually good for us?

What other things should we do while

fasting to seek maximum reward?

Why do we fast?❑ What is fasting?

A. From when till when?

B. What are the main restrictions concerning

food, water and activities?

❑ Name the five pillars of Islam.

❑ This shows how important fasting is

The Qur’an Challenge

• All Atfal should try and read as much Holy Qur’an as possible.

For extra blessings, complete the recitation of the Holy Qur’an

at least once during the blessed month of Ramadan.

• Why? The Holy Qur’an was revealed in the month of Ramadan

• Recitation of the Holy Quran is immensely blessed.

• However, the main focus should be on trying to understand

what the Holy Qur’an teaches us.

➢ For example, the rights of Allah and Mankind

• Sit with your parents to make sure that you do not make any

mistakes.

What are the three “Ashraas”?

The Holy Prophet (sa) has stated that the first ten days of this month are to

attain God Almighty’s mercy, the middle ten days are to seek His forgiveness

and the last ten days one seeks to be saved from the hellfire.

Our beloved Hazoor’s Guidance

1. “Some people observe their fast and then announce that they’re fasting with

great pride. This is not an enormous sacrifice which needs to be announced. In

fact, even after making the greatest of sacrifices, a true believer remains anxious

as to how and when God Almighty should become pleased with him, let alone

announcing it openly to others.”

2. “After offering supplications for only a few days, some people have the

grievances that God Almighty did not accept their prayers. If we do not listen to

God Almighty’s commandments and do not act on them, do not set out in

search of His love, nor do we become His true servants and instead only pray

when we are faced with hardships or difficulties, then how can one complain

that their prayers are not answered by God Almighty. Therefore, we must first

reform ourselves and indeed, in order to reform ourselves, it is vital for one to

pray for them to reap the blessings of God Almighty. Thus it is also vital to pray

for this. In turn, God Almighty will provide the means for our contentment and

satisfaction.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor

Ahmad (aba)

3. “In order to derive the benefits of Ramadan, the fundamental guideline is

that our fasts and every deed of ours should be performed for the sake of

acquiring taqwa. Many people say that we have prayed abundantly, however,

our prayers have not been accepted. They should first assess their own

condition and determine whether they are giving precedence to faith and

they are treading on the path of taqwa or have their worldly endeavours

maligned them. Thus, this is also a condition for the acceptance of prayers.”

4. “Every coming day should allow us to progress in our understanding of

God Almighty. We should not become stationary at one place, nor should we

become like those people who observe fasts due to the influence of society

and as an act of pretention”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor

Ahmad (ab)
