Greetings to all our esteemed members!

Following elections in July 2015, the new management committee has already conducted two meetings, and I must say the committee members showed great enthusiasm to take our club to the next level.

However, as they say, before building any tall structure the foundation must be solid. One of the key focus points of the committee, in the next quarter, will be to review all our existing systems, controls, operations and make improvements where necessary. This will eventually increase efficiency, improve revenue, and control costs.

In order to increase patronage in our club we need to have effective communication channels with all our members. The committee supported the idea of producing a monthly newsletter whereby information related to club activities can be shared with all club members. As a result here we are graced with our first issue of“Maisha” at the Arusha Gymkhana Club.

My sincere appreciation goes to the entire Editorial Committee, led by Mr William Lobulu the Editor of the Arusha Times who worked in collaboration, as a dedicated team, with Aatsa Atogho, Urmi de Baghel and Jennifer Ware.

The editorial team would surely appreciate your regular contributions on any interesting matters that could enliven the newsletters and draw the attention of our esteemed members. It is worth noting that the publication sustainability will, to a large extent, depend on paid advertisements displayed in the newsletter.

I hope you enjoy the first fruits of the editorial committee, and we welcome your suggestions for further improvement. Welcome aboard.

Hiten Nathwani, Club Chairman

Te n n i s N e w sCould there be a better opportunity to show case the ten-nis talents simmering at AGC? Besides the Eddies Kiddies tournament that has been a tradition spanning the past 8 years, many things are happening on all four courts of the club—many even extending beyond Tanzania.

This year, the tennis section recently hosted an interschool competition thanks to Mzee Eddie, Lady Urmi and Captain Aatsa. They brought together ISM Arusha Campus, Brae-burn and ISM Moshi teams. These teams ranked first, second and third-respectively.

Dr Tony Frisby was beaming as he awarded trophies and medals to teenagers that were visibly elated to have been part of an exciting tournament. More excited cheers came during another competition from Sherri’s shed where spectators – students, parents, and coaches watched!

While children in good schools have better exposure to tennis as a means to staying fit, the Tennis Section also has the Youth Development Program (YDP). The YDP scouts hidden and otherwise lost talents from local schools and provides tennis coaching.

We welcome the AGC Newsletter! Hongera, new management!

~Aatsa Atogho, Tennis Captain

GOOD SERVE: A serve is good (in play) if it lands within the box diagonally across from the server. The receiver can then return the ball anywhere within the court lines. If the server does not get the ball within the box on two tries, the receiver gets the point.

S n o o ke r N e w s

The snooker section at the Arusha Gymkhana Club is buzzing with activities after a brief lull this year.

Under the captainship of Mzee Aziz and his team, the section has organized a few activities including Pot Black Competitions and the July annual Friends of Snooker Tournament.

Pot Black is a straight knockout competition open to all club members. All matches are just one frame long, and the draw is random.

Events planned for September include POT BLACK as well as a SPANISH TILES OPEN TROPHY which will run together with a fundraising event for the refurbishment of the Snooker Section.

H e a l t h T i p sCan Caffeine Improve Exercise Performance?by Sandy Todd Webster on Jul 21, 2015, web

Anecdotally speaking, have you noticed that you feel better during and after training when you’ve put some caffeine in the tank? Research reported in the June issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (2015; 47 [6], 1145-58) confirmed that while caffeine improves endurance exercise performance, the ergogenic mechanism(s) behind this effect remain unclear.

Researchers found that consuming a dose of 5 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight (about 2-3 cups of coffee, depending on your size and the type of coffee) before a training bout improved cycling performed with the legs.

However, the same dose did not improve cycling performance for subjects using upper-body ergometers (“pedaling” with the arms). Re-searchers ascribed this difference to the fact that caffeine provided strength gains in subjects’ legs but not in their arms, likely because more muscle was turned on in the legs.

A second part of the experiment showed that when researchers controlled how the exercises were performed (cycling with arms or legs for 30 minutes) and suggested that exercisers cycle at about 60% of maximal ability, subjects experi-enced lower levels of perceived exertion and less muscle pain. When exercise intensity rose, neither perception of effort nor pain levels decreased.

After 8pm, members and guests shall be decently dressed while in the main Club House.

Sports wear such as caps, shorts, shoes with nailed soles, swim wear or other objectionable clothing will not be allowed.

A member of Management may request any indecently dressed per-son to leave the Club House or remove the objectionable wear.

Color the turtle!

H u m o r & P u z z l eTHE RAISE:

A successful man, working as a sales representative in a large company, tells his boss one day, “If you want me to continue working for you, I need a 20% raise. You have 24 hours to give me an answer. I have four companies chasing me, so let me know your decision”. The boss is alarmed. “In this recession, a 20 percent raise? So many employees are being laid off, and so many others have seen a major cut in their salaries, yet you want a 20% raise?” “I will not argue with you,” says the employee. “As I said, there are four companies pursuing me, so just let me know your deci-sion.”

Next day, the boss calls him in, and says that due to his great performance he decided to comply and will give him the request-ed raise.

“Great,” the man says, “ I will continue gladly with you.”As he was leaving, his boss asked, “Out of curiosity, who are the four companies chasing you?” “Oh” man responded, “Master Card, Visa, American Express, and the mortgage company.” MORAL: Investigate before making a decision.
