PBS CELEBRATION—DECEMBER

PBS Party for December

The monthly incentive party for December is PJs, Placemats and Pay It Forward. Students may wear pajamas to school (or comfy clothes), they can decorate a placemat. The placemats will be delivered to a local church or shelter that serves food to the homeless. Donating an item to the shelter is an optional activity.

Items in need include detergent, bleach, paper towels, decaffeinated coffee, napkins, razors, foot powder and deodorant.

The goal of the monthly PBS (Positive Behavior Support) Party is to recognize positive behavior around the school.

Research shows that students achieve at a higher level when they know the expectations and feel safe. Positive Behavior Support helps us improve on both these areas.

We want students to feel good about themselves and come to school happy and ready to learn!

The 2014 Holiday Gift Shop was our most successful yet, raising over $1000 for the Maire PTO!

Thank You – To the Maire PTO for giving us the op-portunity to spread a little holiday cheer once a year! Although it’s time for us to step down as co-chairs, we’ve had a blast transforming the Holiday Gift Shop from a money loser to a money maker...raising over $3000 in the past five years thanks to all the Maire families who love to shop!

Thank You – To the unbelievably talented Chelsea Groustra for single-handedly personalizing anything and everything for an amazing five years in a row. You truly are one of Santa’s elves!

Thank You - To our incredible volunteers who pitch in wherever needed and support us year after year: Claudia Ashkar, Elizabeth Connors, Nancy DeGrand, Sandy Kempa, Julie Lamb, Rebecca Marchetti and Susan Miller. Your friendship and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated…not to mention your excellent gift wrapping skills!

Thank You - To our awesome middle school and high school Maire alumni and friends for their exuberance and superior salesmanship: Sarah Ashkar, Elizabeth Calcaterra, Abby Carolan, Katie Costello, Chloe Lamb, Natalie Liening, Cameron Marchetti, Evelyn Pacifici, Lauren Sancya, Carolyn Shrader, Leo Smith, Rachel Stone, Ryan Trombly and Alexandra Walz. It’s no coincidence there were more holiday gifts sold this year than any other!

Thank You - To George Flora for finding all those ex-tra tables and cleaning up after us, always with a kind word and a smile on his face.

Thank You - To Sonja Franchett, Brooke Bertolini, and Conni Karpinski for enthusiastically promoting the event with posters and flyers.

Thank You - To Glen Hipple for graciously allowing us the use of his Music room and for stopping by to say hello!

Thank You – To our husbands, Paul and Dan, for their endless support and patience.

We hope you’ve had as much fun as we did.

Happy Holidays!

Diana Sancya and Debbie Payne-Walz

Our Maire students collected a whopping $848.39 for UNICEF this Halloween. Way to go!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Ever wondered why Maire has a Diversity Committee? -Diversity Committee Guest Column Writer

As a first time parent of a Maire Kindergartner, I was pleased to learn that Maire has a Diversity Com-mittee. My first question was what does this committee do and what could I learn by participating in it? Let’s begin by defining what diversity means in terms of our Maire families. Diversity encompasses a broad spectrum of defining human characteristics. Succinctly, diversity is what makes each one of us different from the other. Some differences are more easily discerned than others. These differences in-clude race, religion, national origin, gender, disability, changing families, and identity expression. Your daughter might be different because she wears glasses or braces. While glasses and braces are common-ly accepted differences, others may not be. My son might be different from your daughter because his father is black and his mother is white. Where might that difference fall on the scale of acceptability? How about a child whose parents are divorced? What if another child’s parents were born in another country and English was not their first language? What if your son preferred to wear girl’s clothing? How might your child be treated if he had autism or severe food allergies? Or what if your daughter’s friend had parents of the same sex?

As a parent, you know the love you have for your child supersedes any difference. You also know you’d vow to protect your child from any unnecessary hurt. Why do we have a Diversity Committee? To edu-cate ourselves about the diversity within our Maire families, to limit any adversity diversity might arouse, to find ways to make school a safe, fun, educational and accepting environment for each Maire student, and to celebrate the beauty that exists in our diversity. After all, our similarities as human be-ings outweigh every difference. We believe we are one human family and we seek to create a culture of love and respect for every student at Maire; please support our efforts on behalf of your child and every student at Maire.

Respectfully submitted, Shannon Baltimore
