It can also enhance your vehicle’s resale value. This section of the Warranty and Services Guide is designed to help you make sure your vehicle receives proper and timely maintenance. It includes factory-recommended maintenance guidelines as well as logs in which to document your vehicle’s maintenance history. In addition to scheduled maintenance, your Lexus requires ongoing general maintenance such as fluid checks and visual inspections. These procedures are listed on pages 44–45 of this booklet and described in detail in the “Maintenance” section of the Owner’s Manual. Maintaining your vehicle according tothe recommendations in this bookletis required to ensure that your war-ranty coverage remains intact. Youshould keep detailed records of vehi-cle maintenance, including date ofservice, mileage at time of serviceand a description of service and/orparts installation performed. Themaintenance logs in this booklet are agood place to record this information.If you sell your vehicle, be sure to giveyour maintenance records to the newowner.

Lexus will not deny a warranty claimsolely because you do not haverecords to show that you maintainedyour vehicle. However, damage orfailures caused by lack of propermaintenance are not covered underwarranty.

Maintenance and repair services maybe performed by you or by any auto-motive service provider you choose.Lexus will not deny a warranty claimsolely because you used a service

provider other than a Lexus dealer-ship for maintenance and repairs.However, damage or failures causedby improper maintenance or repairsare not covered under warranty.

Your dealer may recommend morefrequent maintenance intervals ormore maintenance services thanthose listed in the scheduled mainte-nance log. These additional servicesare not required to maintain your war-ranty coverage. Ask your dealer foran explanation of any recommendedmaintenance not included in thescheduled maintenance log.

In addition to scheduled maintenance,your Lexus requires ongoing generalmaintenance such as fluid checks andvisual inspections. The recommendedguidelines for inspections are listedbelow. Please refer to the “Mainte-nance” section of the Owner’s Manualfor a detailed description of inspec-tion procedures.

When RefuelingWhen refueling, perform theseinspections:

• Check engine oil level using the dipstick

• Visually check engine coolantlevel on the see-through reservoir (under cover)

• Visually check brake fluid levelon the see-through reservoir

• Visually check power steeringfluid level on the see-throughreservoir (under cover)

• Visually check condition of battery (under cover)

• Check level of windshield washer fluid

Every 30 DaysAt least once every 30 days, performthese inspections:

• Check tire pressure

• Check tires for damage and wear

When Cleaning the Interior • Remove dirt and dust with a

vacuum cleaner. Wipe dirty sur-faces with a soft cloth dampenedwith warm water.

• When cleaning carpet or clothinterior, remove dirt and dustwith a vacuum cleaner. Apply a foaming-type carpet cleaner with a sponge or brush, allowingcleaner to work for a few min-utes to loosen dirt. Continue byrubbing carpet or cloth interiorin a circular motion. Wipe off anyexcess cleaner with a clean cloth.If any dirt remains, repeat process.Best results are obtained bykeeping carpet and cloth interioras dry as possible.

• When cleaning leather interior,remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner. Using a sponge,apply a small amount of neutral

wool detergent mixed in water,rubbing in a circular motion.Wipe off any excess detergentand let leather dry in an open-airlocation.

When Cleaning the Exterior• Working from top to bottom,

apply lots of low-pressure waterto the body, wheel wells andunderside of vehicle to removedirt and dust. Wash the vehiclebody using a soft sponge or cotton cloth with mild car-washsoap. Rinse off with water.

• If water does not bead on a cleanvehicle surface, apply car waxusing a soft cotton cloth whenthe body of the vehicle is cool.

When Cleaning the Wheels• Wait for hot wheels to cool

before getting wheels wet.

• Using a soft sponge or cottoncloth, apply same mild car-washsoap as used for the vehiclebody. Quickly rinse off withwater. Using a soft cotton cloth,apply same car wax as used forthe vehicle body.

Determining YourMaintenance Interval:Months vs. MileageLexus recommends obtaining sched-uled maintenance for your vehicleevery six months or 5,000 miles,whichever occurs first.

For example:

• If at six months you have drivenless than 5,000 miles, youshould obtain maintenance at sixmonths; don’t wait until 5,000miles.

• If you drive 5,000 miles in lessthan six months, you shouldobtain maintenance at 5,000miles; don’t wait until six months.

Be sure to keep an eye on yourmileage so that you obtain mainte-nance when recommended. If you area low-mileage driver, mark your cal-endar to remind yourself to obtainmaintenance every six months.

Complimentary FirstScheduled MaintenanceService: 30 Days or 1,000 MilesLexus provides your first scheduledmaintenance service at no charge.The service is performed at 30 daysor 1,000 miles, whichever occurs first,and includes the items listed in thechart on the next page. Air Conditioner FilterClean or replace at specified inter-vals. More frequent cleaning orreplacement may be required whendriving in dusty conditions, heavy traf-fic areas, urban areas, desert areas ordirt roads. Refer to your Owner’sManual for service details.

Axle Shaft BootsCheck the axle shaft boots andclamps for cracks, deterioration anddamage. Replace any damaged partsand, if necessary, repack the grease.A qualified technician should performthese operations.

Ball Joints and Dust CoversCheck the suspension and steeringlinkage ball joints for looseness anddamage. Check all dust covers fordeterioration and damage. A qualifiedtechnician should perform theseinspections.

Body InspectionVisually check for corrosion, scratch-es and other damage. Check outerbody panels, inner panels of the hoodand doors, and underneath the vehi-cle. Apply touch-up paint to any chipsand scratches or have them repairedby a qualified technician.

Brake FluidReplace using fluid type specified in your Owner’s Manual. A qualifiedtechnician should perform this operation.

Brake Lines and HosesVisually inspect for proper installation.Check for chafing, cracks, deteriora-tion and signs of leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts. A qualified technician should performthese operations.

Brake Pads, Calipers and RotorsCheck brake pads and rotors forexcessive wear; check brake rotorsfor runout. Check brake calipers forfluid leakage. Check the parkingbrake linings (shoes) and drums forscoring, burning, fluid leakage, brokenparts and excessive wear. Some mod-els are equipped with directionalrotors. When servicing these rotors,reinstall at same location. A qualifiedtechnician should perform theseoperations. See inside front cover for additional brake information.

Differential OilInspect each differential componentfor signs of leakage. If you discoverany leakage, have it repaired immedi-ately by a qualified technician. Referto your Owner’s Manual for fluidspecifications. For ISF, replace reardifferential oil at specified intervals.

Drive BeltInspect for cracks, excessive wearand oiliness. Check the belt tensionand adjust if necessary. Replace thebelt if it is damaged.

Engine Air FilterCheck for damage, excessive wearand oiliness. Replace if necessary.

Engine CoolantWhen inspecting, visually check the engine coolant level on the see-through reservoir. Add coolant asnecessary. When replacing, drain and flush the cooling system and refillwith coolant. Always use Genuine Toyota Super Long-Life Coolant orsimilar high-quality non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrate, non-borate ethyl-ene-glycol coolant with long-lifehybrid organic acid technology (i.e., a combination of low phosphates andorganic acids). Engine Oil and Oil FilterReplace the oil filter and drain andrefill the engine oil at specified inter-vals. For recommended oil grade and viscosity, refer to your Owner’sManual. Some models are equippedwith a replaceable oil-filter elementand oil-filter cap O-ring; replace bothat each oil change. For instructions onhow to reset the reminder light, referto your Owner’s Manual.

Engine Valve Clearance (Sensory Inspection — IS F, SC)Inspect for excessive lifter noise andengine vibration and adjust if neces-sary. (All other models are equippedwith hydraulic valve lash adjusters thatrequire no periodic clearance inspec-tion or adjustment.)

Exhaust Pipes and MountingsVisually inspect the exhaust pipes,muffler and hangers for cracks, deterioration and damage. Start the engine and listen carefully for any exhaust leakage. Tighten connec-tions and replace parts as necessary.

Fuel Lines and Connections, FuelTank Band and Fuel Tank VaporVent System HosesVisually inspect for corrosion, dam-age, cracks, and loose or leaking connections. Tighten connections and replace parts as necessary.

Fuel Tank Cap GasketVisually inspect for cracks, deterio-ration and damage and replace if necessary.

Nuts and Bolts on ChassisCheck that tightness of the seat-mounting bolts and front/rear suspen-sion-member retaining bolts matchestorque measurements specified in theRepair Manual.

Power Steering FluidWhen inspecting, visually check thepower steering fluid level on the see-through reservoir. Add fluid as neces-sary. For fluid specifications, refer toyour Owner's Manual.

Rack and Pinion AssemblyInspect the rack and pinion assemblyfor signs of leakage, damage andloose electrical connections. Tightenconnections and if you discover anyleakage or damage, have it repairedimmediately by a qualified technician.

Road TestWhile driving the vehicle, check forproper operation of engine, transmis-sion, brakes and steering. Also checkfor abnormal noise or vibration fromany part of the vehicle.

Spark PlugsReplace at specified interval. Installnew plugs of the same type as origi-nally equipped. A qualified technicianshould perform this operation. Toensure optimum engine performanceon ES 350, replace only with DensoFK20HR11 plugs or equivalent.

Steering Linkage and BootsWith the vehicle stopped, check forexcessive freeplay in the steeringwheel. Inspect the linkage for bendingand damage and the dust boots fordeterioration, cracks and damage.Replace any damaged parts. A quali-fied technician should perform theseoperations.

Timing Belt (SC)Replace every 90,000 miles or 108 months. A qualified technicianshould perform this operation.

Timing Chain (ES, GS, IS, LS)The ES, GS, IS and LS are equippedwith a timing chain that requires noperiodic inspection.

Tire RotationTires should be rotated according to the instructions in your Owner’sManual. When rotating tires, checkpressure and check for damage and

uneven wear. If the spare is not rotat-ed, check the condition and pressureof the spare.

Tire-Pressure Warning SensorsA tire-pressure sensor is mounted oneach full-size wheel. These sensors do not require periodic maintenance.When a sensor’s long-life lithium bat-tery becomes discharged, the batteryshould be replaced by a qualifiedtechnician following procedures inLexus service and repair publications.

Transfer Case/Transmission Inspect each transfer case/transmis-sion component for signs of leakage.If you discover any leakage, have itrepaired immediately by a qualifiedtechnician.

Note: The transfer case/transmissionand transmission fluid are a complete-ly sealed unit. Therefore, periodicchecks and replacement of the trans-mission fluid are not required, andthere is no dipstick on the transmis-sion. Any repairs that require addingor replacing fluid should be per-formed by a qualified technician fol-lowing procedures in Lexus serviceand repair publications.
