Important Message: Barry Matthews – Editor

Betty Modesto Place

It is with true sadness that we received from her son, John Modesto, notice of the passing on September 30, 2017 of Betty Ikins Modesto Place. She was born in 1923 in the small farm town of Onarga, Illinois, where she went to a one room schoolhouse. She attended Gregg Business School in Chicago during the 1940's and worked at General Electric on Canal St. where she met her first husband, John Modesto. They moved to Clarendon Hills, Illinois where she was a founding member of C.H. 32 Couples Bridge and the Women's Club, and had one son, John Modesto Jr. She lived there 65 years and worked as a secretary before retiring. She really enjoyed her friends at the Mainlands since moving here in 2013, and recently said she should have moved here sooner. She was diagnosed one week before passing with aggressive AML Leukemia.

She was predeceased by husbands John Modesto and Jerome Place, and brother Clement Ikins. We all miss you Betty.

It is also time to give thanks and to review how we should be grateful for living in peace and not war. Happy Thanksgiving from the Unit 1 Library Committee Next meeting is November 9th, at 9:30 am. Volunteer for the month is Sharon Van Wart.

WATER AEROBICS: Dawn Haenlein

It is the time of year when the outside air cools down, BUT our heated pool makes our exercises possible and still fun. Check out the warmer cover-ups from years past.

Feel free to bring your over-nite visitors. They will be impressed at the variety of exercises, and worry less about you NOT becoming a couch potato! My son was worried about folks commenting about the fat man in the pool. I told him we'd go early and no one can tell fat or skinny in the water, and he could wear a white T-shirt (for sun purposes of course). He'll be here a week and will realize we're not into fat or skinny. We're into being mobile, balanced, weight training stronger, and just feeling better (physically and mentally). So if you're modest, embarrassed, or worried about comments - NOT GONNA HAPPEN - come early and get in the pool about 8:55am and start moving. We'll ask who you are and make introductions. We'll help you with exercises. The 45 minutes will fly by. See you soon

SOCIAL CLUB:

Kay McAleer – President

Welcome back snowbirds! Prior to the October 10th Social Club Meeting, approximately 40 members enjoyed another delicious Pot Luck

Dinner. A big “Thank You” to all the great Unit 1 cooks for making the evening a success! During the business meeting, Mike Britt, a member of the Gates Committee, joined the meeting via conference call. He shared the reasons that a Gate Committee was formed, discussed the data that was collected, and talked about potential outcomes. Mike spent 35 minutes answering questions from those in attendance. He announced that each Unit will be holding informational meetings during the next several months. It was noted that Mike had been scheduled to speak at the September Social Club Meeting which was cancelled due to Irma, and when the Pennies for Pinellas speaker failed to confirm their appointment Mike was asked if he would be available. He graciously agreed and we thank him very much for taking the time to enlighten us about the proposed gates. The next Social Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m. District Chief Rob Angell of the Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services will be here to discuss what his team does and to answer any questions you may have. Please note: There will be NO Koffee Klatch on November 11 due to Trash ‘n’ Treasures, and NO Koffee Klatch on December 2 due to the Arts & Crafts Fair. During Koffee Klatch on Saturday, November 25, Volunteers are needed to help decorate the inside of the Clubhouse for the Holiday season. Please join us! TRAVEL CLUB:

Joan Blais Tuesday November 7th 11AM Special THANKS to Ginny Murolo and Sharon Van Wart for sharing their many travel and clothing tips with us during the October meeting. Also, Rachael Emmerich shared with us how the agents at Advantage Cruises worked through the night securing return flights and ground transportation when cruise ships/tours were forced to returned early because of Hurricane Irma. Their clients had a hassle free return home when they docked. Just another good reason for using Advantage Cruises and Tours for your travel adventures. They’ve got you covered for any glitches that might arise during your trip.

Upcoming trips: Branson’s Ozark Mt. Christmas, plus Memphis & Nashville 12/3-10

Ft Lauderdale Christmas Pageant 12/13-15 Celebrate the Holidays at Sea 11/23-30 & 12/23-30 Panama Canal 12/3 round trip out of Tampa You can pick up info on many trips at the Clubhouse. Hope to see you at our next meeting. Refreshments will be served and everyone will go home with a little travel gift.

WOMEN’S CLUB: Tami Scheele, President Hello from the Women’s Club! We have a new member that we would all like to welcome, Liz Rumore! It was really heartwarming to see our community come together to help those in need! The donations brought in by all covered a few of the long clubhouse tables for the Ester Street Project. At our meeting, we learned all about this project, how it began and who it helps, by Arlene Jekel’s daughter, Peggy Wright and the founder of Ester Street Project, Tiffany Gorman. Here it is in a nutshell: Tiffany grew up in Pinellas Park, while her grandparents lived in Unit 5. She is a forensic accountant for the FBI, and was assigned to photo document the Pulse Night Club attack. The first responders and food trucks parked on Ester Street and these first responders personally

Page 10: MAINLANDS UNIT 1 JOURNAL...week and will realize we're not into fat or skinny. We're into being mobile, balanced, weight training stronger, and just feeling better (physically and

Page 10

helped Tiffany, as it was a difficult time. This touched her greatly and she in turn wants to help others. Hence, the Ester Street project was started. Tiffany shared with us firsthand knowledge of some of the shelters she has visited. It was truly unimaginable! Because of this experience, she said they go to five shelters or facilities a month (the worst of the worst) with “Goodie Bags” filled from the donations for each of the residents. At the end of the presentation, Tiffany thanked the women for their generous donations. If anyone would like to continue to donate to the Ester Street Project, please bring it to the clubhouse, the 1st Wednesday of the month before 9:30am. Socks & small size Toiletry Items (like from a hotel stay or cruise) are greatly appreciated as donations. Our Trash & Treasures Flea Market is coming up on Saturday, November 11th, 8am-12pm, with set-up on Friday from 1pm-5pm. Tables are still available at $10.00 each. Call Joan Crew or Joan Blais to reserve one. We are also taking donations for our Women's Club tables and for our BAKE SALE. Our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner with Entertainment will be Saturday, November 18th at 5pm. $12 Tickets are on sale, Saturdays 9:00-10:30 at the Clubhouse. Saturday, November 25th, during Koffee Klatch, we will be decorating the Clubhouse for the Holiday Season. Please come join us to help out and socialize! Don’t forget, the Women’s Club will be selling Hot Dogs at the Social Clubs Arts & Crafts Event on December 2nd, so please attend with an empty stomach!
