WHAT does the future hold for the red zoned land along the Avon River?

The deadline is looming for most red-zoned residents to accept the Crown’s offer on their properties by March 31. On Saturday, 26 groups presented their ideas for the land at the Avon River residential red zone projects forum. Last May a petition from more than 18,000 people calling for the land to become a park was presented to Parliament.

But the one who will decide its future, Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee, remains non-committal.

Avon Otakaro Network (AvON) co-chair Evan Smith said the ideas presented at Saturday’s forum would reinvent the red zone from a residential area to a river park and ecological reserve – most were permanent projects, not temporary measures.

But they couldn’t do much without the go-ahead from the Government.

The ideas include a riverside heritage garden park, boatshed

cafes, a comprehensive cycle network, community gardens, urban forests, and sanctuaries for engendered wildlife.

AvON member Ann Kennedy presented an idea for transforming parts of the area into wetlands, for storm-water to go through before it entered the river, which would filter out sediment and contaminants.

“It’s just a question of cutting off the pipe,” she said. Bruce Johnston of the Avon River Users Group is promoting

a flat-water sports facility adjoining the river, 2.2 kilometres long to enable it to host international rowing as the river had currently reached its capacity for such sports and it was posing safety issues.

The diversity of the ideas was a strength, Mr Smith said. “There’s very little conflict between the different projects

because they all dovetail so nicely together.” A spokesman for Minister Brownlee said Cera was interested

in what the community had to say, but there was still work to be done on the best options for the future use of the land and

they were not going to put a deadline on that. “The Crown will recover some costs from insurers

following the purchase of the residential red zone properties, but decisions on the future use for this land and whether the Crown will gain from these are yet to be made,” the spokesman said.

Mr Smith said they understood the Government had good reasons not to make long-term decisions right now, and while some in the community were ready to move on and use the land in new ways, others were still working out where their futures lay.

He said for most of the projects to come to fruition, the land would need to be gifted to the people of Christchurch.

“It’s not much use for much else. That’s the feeling of most of the communities.”

However, Mr Smith said that would not necessarily come ata cost to the Government as returns could still be made from the land.

THEY may be from different schools, countries and cultures but they have something in common – they have all experienced a natural disaster and their home towns are rebuilding.

A group of 17 students from the Japanese coastal town of Kamaishi, which was devastated in the March 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, visited five Christchurch schools earlier this week to share their experiences and learn about New Zealand culture.

Families of pupils from Halswell School, Kaiapoi High School, Cobham Intermediate, Christchurch Girls’ High School and Chisnallwood Intermediate hosted the visiting students, aged 13 and 14.

The students visited local attractions and Christchurch schools, participating in activities like rugby, robotics, clay carving and weaving.

School on Monday. Mayu Abe, speaking through a

translator, said she was really surprised by the big tsunami.

“Lots of buildings had damage or demolished but [the town] is coming back,” Mayu said.

The Japanese students were presented with a cheque for about $1000 to take back to their school. The money was raised by Halswell School.

“It’s really cool to relate to someone who has been through a similar disaster,” Halswell student Abbey Meiritz-Reid said.

The exchange was organised by Christchurch Educated, an initiative set up last year to help the city’s international education sector, which was badly affected by the February 2011 earthquake.

A group of Canterbury education professionals, representing 23 schools

and universities, visited Japan in May last year, which resulted in a series of Skype exchanges between Kaiapoi High School students and Kamaishi students.

As a result, the group of Japanese students was selected to visit New Zealand and compare their response to disaster with Canterbury students impacted by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

Christchurch Educated representative Gus Fahy said international education was about sharing cultures.

“It’s not just about the learning, it’s the culture, it’s the language, it’s everything and to have them come out here and see what goes on in Christchurch and New Zealand, you can’t beat it,” Mr Fahy said.

THE weather played its part, early bird registrations were high, the exhibits were judged and the supreme winning garden, Revolutionising Reuse, announced.

The children from Raumati South School impressed the show’s visitors with their gardening knowledge and won the coveted people’s choice award.

In fact all the comments seemed to be quite positive until the Saturday of the show, March 9, when The Press gardening editor Mary Lovell-Smith wrote a discouraging piece, in which she

called the show’s layout confusing and said the public and the plants were the losers.

One of the Ellerslie judges, Rachel Vogan, has come out swinging saying the comments were “totally unacceptable” and that she was “disappointed, if that is the type of stories that is needed to be written to sell newspapers.

Another aspect that upset her was that the designers now felt they hadn’t done a good job when the reality was they were judged on international criteria.

“A gold medal at Ellerslie is like winning

a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show, and to pull it apart and question that, is very unprofessional.

Christchurch City Council Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said the council was very disappointed at the tack The Press took on its front page the Saturday of the show.

“We are all in this together and although Ellerslie is a commercial venture, it filled a strategic gap the council had in its event programme, alongside Christmas in the Park, the Buskers Festival and Classical Sparks. The

45,000 people who chose to attend Ellerslie is a good number when you think about our city and people’s priorities at the moment,” she said.

Ms Vogan also thought with Christchurch trying to put itself back together and the fact the city was trying to get the whole country to engage with it and give tourists reasons to come here, it was very unfortunate timing [for the critical articles about Ellerslie].

Constructive criticism should be the order of the day, not sensationalism, she said.

POLITICS is a team sport played in suits to the rules of musical chairs.

What appears to be endless bickering in a kindergarten playground is actually an endless game of multiple halves.

When the music stops, as it did in 2008 with a change of government coinciding with the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), teams swap sides on their supposedly level playing field.

Goal posts are swiftly moved around and players scramble for seats reduced in number and size because of cuts.

Winners keep their seats, losers are left standing. The band then plays on, pumping out completely new tunes on their BYO (blow-your-own) trumpets.

With so many players wearing virtually identical uniforms, general confusion is inevitable.

Some are slow to adjust to their team’s change of direction. They soon wind up scoring own-goals, the only goals that are ever remembered in politics.

The Solid Energy team, for example, played on well into 2012 in the belief that the goals they were aiming at were purely aspirational.

They failed to notice when the aspirational goal posts were removed and totally demolished at some point in the middle of the night in 2011 to be replaced with bright red budget deficit target goals.

paid dearly for this mistake by becoming the ball for a couple weeks and being kicked all over Wellington.

John Palmer and Don Elder scrubbed up well for their appearance before Parliament’s commerce committee last week.

You wouldn’t pick them as coal miners. Neither of them looked as if they’d been further underground than a basement car park.

Definitely members of our local business class, the Koru Loungers and Corporate Boxers of New Zealand society, they represent a critical difference between sport and politics.

In sport, the corporate box provides luxury viewing of the action on the field.

In politics, the game is only an excuse for having a corporate box.

Solid Energy’s corporate box is well away from the action. Home to many of its 472 employees on annual salaries of $100,000-plus, the company’s headquarters at 15 Show Place in Addington is a magnet for Audi dealers and travel agents specialising in Tuscan villa homestays.

But without Solid Energy and its myriad corporate cousins up the business end of the state sector, politicians would have no chairmen, chief executives and senior management to play with in their endless corporate box games.

IT’S ugly, unhelpful, adds nothing, is costly, indiscriminate, trashing our communities and most people hate it. Graffiti!

There are people in our community with nothing to do but destroy any building, fence, bus shelter, telephone box and now homes with a spray can.

Nothing is immune to these wanting hands and it is time we took a serious stand.

Over on the east one might have thought the hammering they have taken was enough but idle, moronic individuals think it is okay to vandalise anything in their path by leaving their tag.

Their lack of respect and care and their contempt for what has happened to this city is a telling indictment on how they see us or their place in society.

This is vandalism, a violation of people’s property and it’s spreading to a fence or building near you soon.

There doesn’t seem to be any sort of plan or attack to impede the horrible amateurish extension of someone’s personality and the illegitimacy of their work.

People have had to leave their homes but the ‘new owners’ now seem unable to maintain any sense of order in these vacant buildings/lots.

If Cera owns these buildings and properties get in and clean them up. If the Council owns them, ditto. Join forces and work out a way to get on top of this issue and remove this blight.

The east has not been abandoned; people and vibrant communities still live there. This visual pollution is a constant reminder of just how hard it is.The graffiti perpetrators/taggers

are obviously skulking around at night - that in itself is a security issue for those still living in these areas.

The graffiti on Kate Sheppard retirement village shows the inability to react to these vandals. Last weekend volunteers again pitched in to remove this scourge on the public.

Why should it be left to volunteers? You might say it’s about priorities but as the world looks on, as the tourists and visitors come and our own community moves about Christchurch, what do they see?

New buildings and plenty of plans for the future, but what about now, today and tomorrow as the spray can continues unabated?

The lasting impression is one of vandalism occurring on a daily basis and leaves the ‘artist’ to savour in their ‘masterwork’ as an in-your-face one-fingered salute.

Thank you for spelling it out in plain English. This regime will only be remembered for their arrogance in taking the shortest route to the nearest dollar. There will be nothing left in perpetuity for our grandkids, already we are Skype grandparents as our educated kids saw nothing innovative from successive

governments to induce them to stay onshore.Ultimately Aussie/overseas interests will

own the country; we will become a Republic with little say in our own destiny.

Architect Mike Reynolds has achieved worldwide recognition through his work pioneering sustainable housing design, highlighted in the 2007 documentary Garbage Warrior. Last week he brought his ideas and experience to Christchurch. Tom Doudney caught up with him before he left.

THOSE who have seen Garbage Warrior will Garbage Warrior will Garbage Warriorremember Mike Reynolds as the charismatic, driven, motorbike-riding, rebel that lobbied the New Mexico state government for four years until they finally passed a law allowing him to test his innovative housing designs in the desert.

Reynolds’ eco-homes, or “earthships” as they are known, are built, using recycled materials such as tyres and soft drink bottles, to be entirely self-sufficient, providing for their own water, heating, electrical and sewerage needs. It’s an approach that has won him accolades, but also stiff opposition from authorities trying to make his designs conform to strict - and as he sees it, stifling - regulations.

When I meet Reynolds at a Merivale café, he seems less animated than the man on film, perhaps tired after his busy week in Christchurch, but no less passionate. People are more interested than ever in housing that meets their needs as well as the planet’s, he tells me, but bureaucracy is still getting in the way.

“The movie went all over the world so it did make a lot of people aware,” he says. “Another reason that people are receptive, I’d say, is that whether the movie went around the world or not, the problems are around the world and [building an earthship] is a way, for an individual person or family, of giving them a pathway to deal with these problems on their own because the officials and the corporations and the governments are not doing that great of a job of taking care of people.”

Over the last few days Reynolds has delivered a series of four seminars around the city - three public and one for CPIT architecture and engineering students - on earthship design and his non-profit and disaster-relief work building homes in countries such as Guatemala, Haiti and India.

After our talk, he has a meeting lined up with Christchurch City Council officials.

“We just want to show them these buildings that are made from products that are thrown away and discarded. They are quite earthquake resistant, more than most conventional methods, and they contain and treat their own sewage, so you don’t have to worry if the sewerage lines break. They make their own water, they make their own power, they heat and cool themselves, they grow food.”

Reynolds says his earthships cost about the same as a well-built conventional home, but with the notable distinction of having no subsequent utility bills. However, he also believes housing around the world is too expensive and wants to bring the cost of his own designs down as well.

He is encouraged by the widespread use of shipping containers in the Christchurch rebuild.

“Even though it’s probably temporary it shows that [the council] are willing to step outside of convention and the box, so to speak, just to get some kind of shelter and shops and things back and it illustrates that they’re capable of moving on from tradition.”

These days Reynolds tries to split his time equally between educating others and practising his craft. Although he has spent 40 years as an architect, he says he is still learning and coming up with new ideas.

He is happy that the law change he achieved in New Mexico has allowed him the freedom he needs to experiment, but equally he is determined not to put so much energy into lobbying government again.

“I’m thrilled with the fact that it happened, but at the same time, things need to happen faster than that.”

However, Reynolds adds that authorities are standing in his way less and less these days “because they are desperate”.

“Crisis is kind of an opportunity to get people’s eyes open to something else - and we think this ‘something else’ is better anyway.”

Tom [email protected] CHRISTCHURCH resident is suffering a guilty conscience after advising a person she met in Malvern Park, St Albans, that the chestnuts she was collecting were an edible variety when in fact they were not.

Sixty-three-year-old Anne (last name not given) had been collecting the chestnuts herself last week when she met the woman, who she gave advice to on how to prepare them.

The other woman then left with the chestnuts which she intended to share with her children.

Later on, a colleague advised Anne that what she had been collecting were actually horse chestnuts, a mildly poisonous variety, considered unsuitable for human consumption.

Anne did not have the woman’s name or contact details but as she had advised her that the nuts would need to be dried for six weeks before eating, she was hoping that the woman

might learn of the mistake before then.National Poisons Centre information officer

Robin Slaughter said horse chestnuts were not too poisonous but were capable of causing symptoms such as vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

“They taste a little bit bitter. I guess if people were particularly sick we would recommend being seen by the doctor but in most cases you will probably come right again.”

Edible ‘sweet’ chestnuts and horse chestnuts look very similar but there are ways to tell them apart. Edible chestnuts are not as rounded in shape and are slightly pointed on the underside. The burrs which contain the nuts are easier to differentiate, with the edible chestnut burr being covered in a thick coat of spikey hairs and the horse chestnut burr having single spikes further apart.

SCHOOLS earmarked to close were visited by the Variety Bash, a convoy of quirky pre-1976 cars, fire engines and other vehicles, last Thursday to bring more than $60,000 worth of grants to child-related organisations in Christchurch.

The group of volunteers visited Central New Brighton School where children got to participate in a basketball game with representatives from There’s a Better Way Foundation (TABW). A grant of $3838 was given to the foundation which reaches out to underprivileged and troubled young people, using basketball as a vehicle to help them achieve their goals.

There’s a Better Way Foundation Christchurch manager Luis Arevalo said all the kids had a great time getting into the spirit of the event.

The grant will allow them to “take the three-on-three concept onto the streets and have children from all communities active straight outside their front doors”.

The Variety Bash also visited other Christchurch schools such as Burwood School.

Other grants included $2356 to Ronald McDonald House to fund the replacement of duvet inners and covers, $5070 to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren for eye examinations and glasses for 30 grandchildren living with grandparents in Christchurch and Kaikoura, $2900 for a Sunshine Coach (vehicle) for Birthright Christchurch to help single mothers and babies get places, as well as transporting goods, clothing and food to the families.

Variety ambassador Ewen Gilmour said he loved seeing the

children’s faces light up when given grants. Some other projects funded in past years have included an insulin pump so a child could go on school camp and special swings for people in wheelchairs.

“We just want to make a tangible difference and fill in the gaps where there isn’t any Government

funding,” Mr Gilmour said.Before Christchurch, the Variety

Bash began in Tongariro on March 9, travelling to Waipukurau via Ongaonga, Picton via Wellington and Hanmer via Blenheim. Christchurch was the fifth stop of the Bash which had not visited the city for three years.

Island Ecological Restoration Trust has gone missing from Lyttelton. The Quail 1, a 5.2metre Stabicraft 525 was discovered missing at 8.30 a.m. on March 4, when it was due to take part-time employees across to Quail Island for work.

The boat, pictured right has a 70hp Johnson outboard, and the Watercraft trailer registration number is K732F.

It was stored on its trailer at Naval Point Yacht Club in Lyttelton Harbour.

“It is presumed that both boat

and trailer were stolen in the early hours of Sunday morning - as that is when the barrier arm to the car park was broken,” trust chairman Ian McLennan said.

The boat is used to transport part-time workers to the island each week, where they carry out a range of tasks including predator trapping, clearing of alien vegetation and planting of indigenous plant species on the island.

The trust is appealing to the public for information and leads that might help with to find the boat as this limits its ability, or adds

unnecessarily to the costs, to carry out restoration work on the island, Mr McLennan said.

Diabetes epidemic warning issued

Growing concern: Health experts are warning about the implications of increasing diabetes.

WHAT’S being called a silent and smouldering epidemic will claim tens of thousands of Kiwi lives and Christchurch experts fear it will cripple the health sector unless urgent action is taken.

Canterbury is at the forefront of the diabetes count with 20,000 people in the region affected by type-two diabetes and 200,000 nationwide.

Diabetes Christchurch manager Lynn Taylor said the earthquakes were largely to blame, with financial pressures thrust upon Canterbury families, supermarkets becoming casualties and stress making comfort food appealing.

“People haven’t been able to access their normal supermarket, they have to travel further and in more intense traffic plus the roads are hard to travel on and sorry, food makes you feel nice. It’s comforting, so when everyone’s having all these issues with earthquakes and that sort of thing it’s nice just to have a wee nibble here and there.”

Ms Taylor had expected Canterbury figures to rise after the city became a lot less active in cycling and walking.

“We’re not so labour intensive, we don’t walk to work and cycle as much; we drive a car…we’re just not as physical as we used to be so we’re not using up the food were eating.”

The rebuild presented a huge opportunity in introducing effective cycle ways and enticements to walk, especially under the central city blueprint projects like the Avon River precinct.

“Just being able to go out to a park or walk along a river or somewhere helps. Having pools and Kiwi sport are great for people,” Ms Taylor said.

Canterbury lost a large number of its sporting facilities in the earthquakes which meant

people were no longer as active as they were pre-September 2010.

Health statistics show the number of Kiwis with diabetes has almost doubled in the past 10 years.

If the disease is left to manifest, it has been estimated that by 2021 nearly half a million New Zealanders will be type two diabetics, costing the country more than $1 billion a year.

“If we don’t start helping to solve the problem now it’s only going to get a lot more complicated in the future,” Ms Taylor said.

Latest University of Otago research found nearly one in five Kiwi adults are set to develop type-two diabetes.

The research found type-two diabetes was more frequent in men than women and was higher among those suffering from obesity.

Fifteen per cent of Pacific Island people were affected and 10 per cent of Maori.

“Everyone thinks it won’t happen to me, so like a car accident it won’t happen to me. Unfortunately, it is. One in five is a horrific statistic and we’ve got to recognise if we don’t start looking after ourselves and managing our own health better, we can’t expect the Ministry of Health to do everything, this is all our responsibility,” Ms Taylor said.

More heart and diabetes checks is one of the Government’s six national health targets and it hopes 90 per cent of those most at risk of developing the illness will be checked by next year.

Lincoln marks 150 yearsCELEBRATING 150 years of history with a single heritage day wouldn’t do justice to the Selwyn township of Lincoln, organisers of a heritage festival say, so the local community is turning out for six days of events instead.

“We started with the idea of one heritage day but it has grown into a ‘Heritage Festival’ of six days,” Lincoln and Districts Historical Society president Margaret Hannan said.

“It was suggested that too much had happened in Lincoln in 150 years to confine the celebrations to just a single day.”

The festival was opened officially by Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by invited community representatives and members of local organisations and institutions such as Lincoln University, which has been part of Lincoln for 135 years.

Many developments and initiatives had come together in recent times, in both a planned and coincidental way, to make a festival celebrating Lincoln’s heritage particularly appropriate, Mrs Hannan said.

These included publication of a history of Lincoln by local resident Neville Moa, the creation of a Heritage Precinct and Historical Walk, the establishment and success of the Down by the Liffey Gallery in the old Coronation Library building, the reopening of quake-damaged historic St Stephen’s Anglican Church, which dates from 1877, the release of plans for a new library and council service centre in Lincoln, the construction and dedication of Lincoln’s first-ever war memorial in 2012, opening of the new hotel on the site where one has stood for almost as long as Lincoln has existed and the opening of the new Lincoln Event Centre in 2011.

he was enthusiastic about the 150th anniversary and saw it as an opportunity to reflect on the township’s history of connections with the university and to look ahead optimistically at ways Lincoln could evolve as a distinctive “university town”.

Screen time for local musicians

CANTERBURY musicians now have a chance to shine on the silver screen.

The brainchild of Canterbury Television (CTV) presentation director Adam Robertson, music show CMusic screened for the first time on CTV last night.

Mr Robertson saw a gap in the market and hoped to promote the underground and upcoming artists on a platform that was currently not available to them.

“We have so many talented musicians in Canterbury that are not able to show the world what they do. Being seen and heard is what music is all about and that’s exactly how we intend to revive Christchurch’s music scene,” he said.

The new show will feature New Zealand music industry news and updates, play the latest music videos and produce a local gig guide.

It will also focus on interviews with local artists, playing their music video or a live performance to show what they are capable of.

“We are very excited at the opportunities this presents for any new artist whether they are a dancer, soloist, band, group, DJ or producer - if related to any facet of the music industry, any genre we are interested in promoting them. We need to be seen supporting our gifted music industry and CMusic will be a vehicle to help identify what’s happening and who’s who,” Mr Robertson, who will also produce and front the show, said.

CTV has recently gone digital and is available on Freeview Channel 40 – it will continue to also be broadcast on analogue until Christchurch switches over to digital television on April 28.

CMusic will be played out on CTV on a Wednesday night at 8pm with replays on Thursdays and Saturdays. It now has its own Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CmusicNZ.

Diverse programme on offer from CSO

THE Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is presenting its March concert, Firebird, this Saturday at the Air Force Museum in Wigram.

The first half of this diverse programme will feature the world premiere of The Mountain by Gao Ping, and a performance by talented New Zealand pianist Stephen de Pledge, who will be playing a work specially composed for him by New Zealand composer Lyell Cresswell.

“Stephen de Pledge is an outstanding musician,” the orchestra’s artistic director Gretchen La Roche said, “and this is a very virtuosic and physically demanding piece.

“Stephen premiered it with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and has also played it with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and recorded it for Naxos.”

The composition, Concerto for piano and orchestra, won the Silver Scroll Award in 2011.

The April concert by the orchestra will be a Mozart Festival, exploring the life of the composer, and will be followed in May by a performance celebrating the life of late children’s

author Margaret Mahy.“This will feature her stories set to music by

Christchurch composer Philip Norman,” Ms La Roche said.

“He had worked with her a lot during her life.”

The CSO is currently performing at the Wigram Air Force Museum, following the loss of its home base, the Christchurch Town Hall.

“The museum offers the best acoustics available for an orchestra in the city at the moment,” Ms La Roche said.

“People have been surprised and impressed with the sound. They have also been entertained by the surroundings and the sense of atmosphere. People have commented they hadn’t been to the museum before and walking through the exhibits – they’ve enjoyed that.”

She said the museum people had been “wonderful”, as had the volunteers, who were “staunch supporters of the orchestra”.

Snappy mousetraps but without Marmite

FINDING a recipe for a better mousetrap led Canterbury Repertory Theatre to debut a new snack with a bite but without Marmite for its performances of a classic play.

Chef Richard Till provided Repertory with a recipe for the classic Kiwi mousetrap but without the missing black ingredient.

Repertory president and actor John Jefferies said the production of the classic Agatha Christie whodunit lent itself to a recipe in the programme for all those who attended the scene of the crime.

“We knew mousetraps should be the production’s snack food of choice so we went to the well-known chef who has connections to Repertory through his daughter. Richard provided a brilliant secret recipe and we will be passing it to audience members as a bonus. As with all things in The Mousetrap, it’s a secret and we will ask everyone to honour that.”

Mr Jeffries said the theatre group had been worried that the recipe would include Marmite which, when they were planning the production, was unavailable.

“It turns out that Richard Till’s recipe is his mother’s and she anticipated the Marmite shortage by many years. We’re glad Marmite is on its way back but Repertory has no plans to introduce Marmite to our tasty secret snack,” John said.

Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap runs April 12 to 20 at St Michael and All Angels Church.

Maria Middlebrook-Wells is a contemporary artist working from her home studio in Nelson. In 1999 she gained a Diploma in Visual Arts majoring in painting from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Interested in the protection of our beautiful flora and fauna. It saddens her that we have already lost so many of our species and that there are so many more on the endangered list. ‘We should all consider ourselves as guardians of the land and consider the impact of spraying chemicals to control insects and weeds through to taking undersized fish and shellfish. It all has an effect and comes at a price’.

Timaru born, Lisa Grennell is an emerging NZ artist with a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, 2010. Lisa runs private screenprinting workshops from her home studio in Nelson and dedicates her time to print making

and sketching. This she describes as a “nice balance” from the random, instant expression of screenprinting, to the methodical precision of fine detailed drawing. Through the eyes of a child the world is a whimsical place. Inherit is passing knowledge down from generation to generation. It is sentiment, values and respect. It is what influences the imprint we leave on this planet for future generations. This body of work explores inherit from a child’s perspective and in retrospect the impact modern technology has on our children.

Edmonds’ battered legacy lives on

FOR generations of New Zealanders, Thomas FOR generations of New Zealanders, Thomas FOREdmonds’ name has been associated with his company’s famous cookbook and ‘sure to rise’ flour, yet the entrepreneur left almost as much of a mark on Christchurch’s built landscape as he did on the country’s kitchens.

In the 1920s and 30s Edmonds and his wife Jane were responsible for funding and donating a number of significant buildings, monuments, parks and gardens which became treasured

parts of the city’s heritage. That legacy has since been diminished but not erased by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

Many of these features were concentrated around the Avon River between Colombo Street and Fitzgerald Avenue.

THE Christchurch South Community Gardens have enjoyed a bumper crop this harvest season and this weekend there will be plenty of plants, preserves and produce for the community to share in.

The gardens at 188 Strickland Street are holding an Autumn Market Day this Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

On sale will be pickles, homemade tomato soup and grape juice, vegetable and flower plants.

Christchurch South Community Gardens Trust manager Christine Blance said it was a good opportunity for people to have a look around the gardens and meet their neighbours.

“It’s about knowing that there is something you can produce from your garden all year round, although it is pretty slim pickings in Christchurch in winter,” she said.

Ms Blance said they had a good harvest this year - one tonne of fresh organic produce and five tonnes of compost were made available

to the community. “It’s all about being seasonal and we are

committed to contributing to a sustainable neighbourhood and a very small direct way of doing that is keeping everything local,” she said.

The gardens have been in operation since 1999 and hold four seasonal market days each year, autumn, winter/Matariki, spring and summer.

“The seasonal market days can show people that there is productivity in the garden all year round. Autumn is the busiest – lots of fruit crops are ready to harvest, so this means lots of pickling.”

This summer’s dry weather conditions proved a challenge, but one the gardeners coped with due to forward thinking.

“We have filled large water containers for hand-watering since February 2011 – only now and then would we turn on a sprinkler. Mulching between plants with

straw, grass clippings, wet newspaper etc. helps retain moisture. Aphids and white fly are more of a pest in the dry conditions, but we have had a bumper crop of tomatoes and grapes, which is also due to some expert pruning from one or two skilled volunteers.”

Ms Blance said there was no easy way to make a garden.

“You can talk about it, you can Facebook it, but eventually you’ve got to go out and do it. We socialise through the work.

“We get a thrill about what we can produce for ourselves and our community.”

“There is a wide variety of activities to suit all – from building and composting to propagation and pickle-making,” Ms Blance said.

Winstone Wallboards Ltd is New Zealand’s largest manufacturer and marketer of gypsum plasterboard, drywall systems, associated products and services.

The company has been operating since 1927 and manufactures plasterboard systems under the GIB brand name. It has facilities in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Key clients from across Canterbury were invited to help formally celebrate the milestone at a function hosted by well-known Cantabrian Gary McCormick, which included a tour of the factory to see the developments made as a response to Canterbury’s recent earthquakes.

“The event went off without a hitch; it was great to be part of something so positive. Fifty years is a long time, and I hope to be part of many more years to come. Everyone had a great time,” the company’s area sales manager, Clara Sumner, said.

“The tour was amazing. I never realised the

intricate processes involved in the manufacture of GIB plasterboard. It was great to see a Christchurch factory working so hard to help the city get back on its feet,” party guest Becki Lake said.

Guests heard how the well-known GIB brand was supporting the Canterbury rebuild by working closely with engineers from the University of Canterbury over the past 12 months to develop improved building systems for earthquake-prone commercial buildings.

“We’ve learnt a lot and our products are specifically designed to address what we’ve learnt, not only in a commercial space but also in our own homes. Our products are designed and made in Christchurch for New Zealand conditions,” Ms Sumner said.

As a result of the earthquake rebuild demands, Winstone Wallboards has increased its capacity by 25 per cent at its Opawa plant, with more than 50 staff and contractors now working on the site.

The company plans to continue its commitment to Canterbury, increasing manufacturing and logistics staff by a further 10 to 20 per cent over the next year, subject to market demand.

A HORNBY woman is commemorating 42 years A HORNBY woman is commemorating 42 years A HORNBYof taking part in Al-Anon, a support group for family and friends of alcoholics.

The woman was referred to the group by her doctor, who saw she was struggling to deal with her family members’ drinking – and says it’s the best thing she’s done.

“That was his prescription to me and I am really, really grateful,” she said.

Mainland Press has chosen not to name the woman, although she said she was glad to be known as an Al-Anon member.

One of Al-Anon’s 12 traditions, based on the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) model of the 12 Steps, Traditions and Concepts, is that their public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion and they need to always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, films and television, and also guard with special care the anonymity of all AA members.

However, we are sharing the 70-year-old’s story as she wanted to show the positive impact Al-Anon has had on her and encourage others in need to seek help.

“It’s a very simple programme for very complicated people,” she said.

The woman said sometimes family members and friends of those suffering from alcoholism could end up more mentally unwell than the alcoholics themselves, so they really needed support.

She had never been a drinker herself.“I thought I was holier than thou, better. It’s easy

to point the finger at the alcoholics,” she said. There are about 12 Al-Anon groups in

Christchurch, based in local communities throughout the city.

“We are very, very lucky to have it. I think I’m

the luckiest person in this world to have come through those Al-Anon doors.

“It’s made me a better person, a more loveable person. I like myself today and I have respect for myself today as well as respect for others.”

She said it was not easy to get the family members of alcoholics to realise there was help for them.

“You can’t do it on your own. I definitely need the programme of Al-Anon and I need to be doing it regularly.”

CHRISTCHURCH people are at risk of pre-quake memories of the city being forgotten, a University of Canterbury (UC) historian says.

UC Associate Professor Katie Pickles says many iconic city buildings have gone and more landmarks are to be demolished.

“Many Christchurch landmarks have been demolished to make way for new buildings in what is becoming an exciting city.

“But we have never been a demolition city before, with hard hats, high-viz, cranes, and wrecking balls. This is what Cantabrians see and hear on a daily basis. Memories of the past pre-quake city are fading.”

Professor Pickles will speak about the lost landmarks as a key speaker at the second annual Seismics and the City forum at the Addington Events Centre in Christchurch tonight. UC’s new Quake Centre will also be launched tonight at the Westpac Hub.

Professor Pickles said Christchurch people tie memories and emotions to particular places and if the places are demolished, then they are no

longer available to act as memory triggers.“These old places that were there before the

quakes are not there to see any more. They will be available as images in books and galleries and they will be locked inside our heads without the triggers to escape.

“We all make ‘mental maps’ in our heads made up of our life journeys around our environment. The earthquakes have short-circuited these mental maps.

“Tragically, there is grief and loss of life associated with some places. I think buildings that resulted in no loss of life can also trigger a wider association with the awful events. It is our individual mental maps that add up to make history.

“Different buildings and places have different memories for us but for me this is my top 10 glittering places that have vanished,” Professor Pickles said.

For personal reasons the buildings Professor Pickles misses the most are: The Westpac Building, formerly the Canterbury Savings

Bank and Trustbank Canterbury building, in Cashel Street; the Lane Walker Rudkin complex on Durham St; the Riccarton Raceway members’ grandstand; St George’s Hospital heritage building; Cracroft House in Cashmere; Christchurch Girls’ High School on Montreal Street; Cranmer Courts on Montreal St; Warner’s

Hotel in Cathedral Square; Occidental Hotel on Hereford St; the Christchurch Children’s Library on Cambridge Terrace.

“These are places where my family and I worked or went to school or socialised. They conjure up for me a mixture of happiness and sadness,” Professor Pickles said.

Popular book sale back in SpreydonTHE annual book sale by Christchurch City Libraries will see more than 60,000 titles for sale in Spreydon this weekend.

The sale will be held at the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre from tomorrow and includes adult, young adult, children’s fiction and non-fiction titles.

Libraries and Information Unit manager Carolyn Robertson said the event was extremely popular with the Christchurch community.

“Last year we sold all our books by midday on Saturday. People were queuing up from 7am. We have some particularly sought-after non-fiction books,” Ms Robertson said.

This year’s sale would be especially large with a greater range than usual, she said.

“Now that we have more libraries open, there has been more time to look at our collections, identify which titles have been replaced with newer material and which titles no longer meet the changing needs of our customers.

“Our sale provides valuable revenue for the library. It is a great opportunity to pick up your favourite books, or a couple of reference books at an affordable price.”

Children are particularly keen customers of the event with children’s books on sale for $1.

Most fiction and non-fiction books are sold for $3, with some higher quality non-fiction books selling for up $20.

The sale will be held at the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, 75 Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, on Friday, March 22, 9am to 7pm and Saturday, March 23, from 9am to 4pm.

CHRISTCHURCH City Council has released its draft Christchurch City Three Year Plan for public comment, giving residents the opportunity to have a say on the city’s future.

The draft plan is a proposal setting out everything the council plans to do over the next three years, how much these services and projects will cost, and where the money will come from.

Public consultation on the draft plan closes at 5pm on April 19.

A summary of the draft plan, including a submission form, is being sent to every Christchurch household. Open days and community drop-in sessions are being held across the city so residents can find out more and make a submission on all or part of the plan.

Submissions will be considered and debated by the council, and any changes deemed necessary by councillors will be made before the final plan is adopted at the end of June.

“I encourage residents to take the time to make a submission. This city belongs to all of us and it is important we all have a say on our future,” Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said.

Thousands take part in TryathlonA TOTAL of 2000 Canterbury children took part in the Christchurch Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon in Spreydon’s Centennial Park on Sunday.

Sporting celebrities including Debbie Tanner, Anna Harrison and Pero Cameron joined the local crowd at the event and cheered on the participants, who were aged between seven and 15.

Over the past 21 years more than 240,000 New Zealand children have taken part in a Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon including sporting stars, Alison Shanks, Andrea Hewitt and Sarah Walker.

The event holds the world record for being the largest children’s sporting event of its kind, and this year it is travelling to 13 New Zealand cities and towns.

the Repertory Theatre. Both were badly damaged by the earthquakes and have now been demolished.

However, two monuments in the area, although also damaged, may continue to be part of the city’s future.

In 1929, to celebrate 50 years of doing business in Christchurch, Edmonds advised the Christchurch City Council of his desire to contribute £5000 towards the River Bank Improvement Scheme for the erection of a band rotunda, clock tower, riverside walk and lighting standards, along with other landscape features.

Following the earthquakes, the Edmonds Band Rotunda on Cambridge Tce has had its dome lifted off the pillars and base, which have been demolished. The steps and foundation plaque remain in place. The dome will stay secured on site while the future of the band rotunda is determined as part of the council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan.

Hanging on: The future of the Edmonds Band Rotunda is yet to be determined.

Saved: The Edmonds Clock Tower was partially deconstructed so work to strengthen and repair it could be carried out.

Repair and earthquake strengthening work began on the Edmonds Clock Tower in January and was expected to be finished next month.

Edmonds’ famous factory on the corner of Aldwins and Ferry roads was controversially demolished in 1990 but the adjacent Edmonds Factory Gardens have continued to offer a place of tranquillity to visitors, despite the gardens having been shifted slightly westward over the decades.

In Wainoni, Bickerton Reserve, donated by Edmonds in 1931, remains as a lasting tribute to his friend Professor Alexander Bickerton.

When Edmonds died in 1932, then-Mayor DJ Sullivan read a tribute to the substantial crowd

of mourners which had gathered at Linwood Cemetery.

“The death of Mr Edmonds removes from our midst one of the most philanthropic citizens we have known,” he said.

Christchurch City Council heritage advisor Jenny May said Edmonds had left a physical legacy which was “very visible particularly in the fact that it runs along a stretch of the Avon river and it all links together”.

“In terms of social history, his legacy, to me, reached far further than just the building and the beautifying things that he did, but reached into New Zealand homes additionally through what the firm was and what it produced.”

Ngatai defends title despite crash

No guts, no glory: Hometown hero Malcolm Ngatai delighted Canterbury fans by defending his Battle of the Stocks title, along with Palmerston North race partner Simon Joblin, at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday night.His chances had looked grim after Friday night’s racing when a spectacular collision, pictured above, with Palmerston North’s Kevin Roberts sent Ngatai’s car rolling across the track and ended with race

officials assisting him from his upside down vehicle. Although the crash forced him to withdraw from racing after the second heat that night, he was back in action on Saturday and his results that night, of ninth, second, first and tenth, were good enough to bolster Joblin’s strong results, giving them the win. Joblin also finished second in the individual championship.

THE game Aliens: Colonial Marines is perhaps somewhat of a metaphor for the current state of the gaming industry, or at least the more commercial side of it.

The 34-year-old Alien franchise is a revered one and there have been dozens of Alien games on nearly every gaming platform. But none have seemed like more of a shameless cash-in than the latest from Gearbox and Sega – Aliens: Colonial Marines. It’s painfully obvious that Gearbox just wanted this off their workload and relied on the popular subject matter and a marketing campaign that bordered on false advertising, just to recoup their costs, happy just to file this title under “Let’s just pretend that never happened”.

It’s a slap in the face, both for gamers and fans of the fiction. It’s like the developers sat around a table and wrote a big list of things that need to be included in an Alien game. Then they threw them all in the game, made them completely useless and gave everything no historical context whatsoever. Take the perimeter scanner as an ideal example. Such an integral part of the movies, generating fear and suspense in spades – but in the game, it’s nothing more than a cosmetic inclusion.

The Xenomorphs barely react when you shoot them and just clumsily lurch forward in a heap when you’ve filled them full of enough lead. They reminded me

of killing a Cacodemon in the original Doom, absorbing bullets until flopping in a blob on the floor. In fact the most reaction I got out of an alien was one that ran and took cover behind a crate – and I don’t need to tell any true Alien fan what’s wrong with that scenario.

The multiplayer shows some promise and has some good ideas with the likes of Marines versus Aliens. At least the weapons upgrade system bears some relevance in the multiplayer modes. But with clunky and mechanically awkward combat, this is no Left4Dead.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a game that shouldn’t be released in this day and age, and anyone who wants a better and more atmospheric Alien game, pull out your PS1 and play Alien Trilogy.

NOIR is one of the most exciting and adaptable of film genres. Its themes of deception, corruption and moral ambiguity are as relevant now as they were to post-war America.

Classic noir plots contain certain key elements; they are moody and atmospheric, and there’s always someone searching for the truth amidst a sea of hidden agendas. There’s always powerful and corrupt men and that most intriguing of characters - the femme fatale - there to mess with everyone.

Broken City, set in a contemporary New York that Batman would be at home in, falls most definitely into the category of a noir. Mayor Hostetler hires Billy Taggart, a private detective with a shady past, to spy on his wife during his re-election campaign.

The detective suspects he’s being played but goes along with it anyway and delivers what the mayor wants – photos of his wife with the man with whom she’s supposedly having an affair.

Then someone turns up murdered and our hapless detective realises that yes, he’s definitely being played and everyone has something to hide.

The film has a weighty cast which includes Mark Wahlberg as detective Taggart, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as the mayor’s wife, Cathleen. Russell Crowe (with hair so bad he could rival Javier Bardem), takes on the role of the mayor, and while he is good, I

think he might have been better cast as detective Taggart - because in my opinion he does dishevelled and on the back foot far better than he does smooth and in control.

The cast members do a good job with their characters but are hindered by some patchy dialogue. Broken City isn’t a bad film, but I do think it could have been a better one.

I suspect the inexperience of writer Brian Tucker and director Allen Hughes (Touching Evil) show through here. At times it feels too weighed down by the burden of its genre to the detriment of its storyline - which is a shame, because with a few tweaks Broken City could have been the film it wanted to be - a classic noir.

Le Race set to challenge riders againLE RACE is scheduled to take off at 8am this Saturday, starting in Christchurch and crossing the finishing line in Akaroa.

Speed, summits and scenery combine on a course that will see cyclists tackle 100 kilometres of fast flats, challenging hill climbs and exhilarating descents as they head to the French surrounds of Akaroa on Banks Peninsula.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said Le Race was a must-do event for both competitive and casual cyclists.

“This is a great chance for cyclists with a competitive streak to race for a course record – equally, it’s ideal for recreational riders to take in the stunning Canterbury backdrop at a leisurely pace.

“Le Race’s appeal continues to extend beyond Canterbury, with an increasing number

of North Islanders and Australians entering and returning year after year to race in the event and enjoy the dramatic scenery on offer,” he said.

A road bike, mountain bike or even a tandem can be used for the event. Participants can sign up as an individual or as a two- or three-person team to make the challenge more manageable.

The National Schools Triathlon Championships at Pegasus is happening prior to Le Race, today and tomorrow.

“The triathlon stands out for all the right reasons,” Mayor Parker said.

“Fun, exercise and the coming together of children from a variety of schools nationwide. Children will enjoy pulling out swimming caps, putting on runners and pushing the pedals during this delightful, two-day sporting event.”Full marks to the

commentatorI FOR one am thrilled to have test cricket going on at the moment and a large part of the pleasure comes from the input of one television commentator.

No-one could doubt the contribution Ian Smith made to the New Zealand cricket team’s efforts in the early 1980s as a player. He was totally committed to making sure that the teams he was involved in gave 100 percent every time they put the black cap on.

Ian Smith brings that same dedication to his role as captain of the TV commentary team. He has obviously watched and listened and has absorbed what makes his peers the best in the business. He was a true professional at a time when cricketers weren’t. He brings that same passion and an expectation of achievement by Kiwi teams to his commentaries.

Believe me, being a sports commentator in this country is one of the most difficult jobs in the land.

It seems that in this country even the 50-million sheep have an opinion on how a commentator should report the match. Smith

has a very keen eye on what is unfolding in front of him and has an uncanny knack of predicting what may happen next. He also portrays in his commentary that he is not there on an ego trip which so many others do. He has the great blend of having played at the highest level but is also aware that it doesn’t always go the way of the home team.

What I also find incredible is just how insightful he is when he is the comments man covering our national game, rugby. He knows his place when talking to All Blacks and just puts them at ease and asks the questions the viewer wants answers to. He never tries to be the star but knows what his job is.

In this day and age it appears to be fashionable to put a microphone in the hands of a recently retired sports star and let them loose. Not many of them cut the mustard because they tend to think that because they’ve been there, done that, they must be an authority on their chosen sport.

Love your work Smithy, don’t change, just keep working at your trade.

Canberra’s kangaroos LAST week I travelled for the first time to Canberra, Australia, in order to achieve my goal of winning the Oceania time trial championships. I came back having mastered some local slang, learnt more about the history of the Australian capital, and with a winner’s grin.

I’m somewhat bemused and a little weary of purpose built capital cities in the middle of nowhere. Where (my experience of) Brasilia - Brazil’s answer to preventing overpopulating Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo - failed to impress, the historical reasons for Canberra - essentially Sydney and Melbourne not coming to terms on who deserved the right to be the capital - intrigued. Staying with a family this trip certainly added to my experience and local knowledge.

It seems Canberra, like the rest of Australasia, has also endured an unusually long and hot

summer. Combining this with a particularly non-flat parcour (course) meant winning this time trial was going to be very challenging. Hence I was very pleased to become the Oceania time trial champion ahead of some good Australian competition, the current New Zealand time trial champion (Joe Cooper - eventually placing 3rd) and fellow New Zealander Jason Christie (4th).

Canberra was a great place to visit but among other things my near collision with a kangaroo made me appreciate the safeness of cycling downhill (without the prospect of wildlife collisions) in Canterbury, and that the grass is indeed a bit greener this side of the patch.

OUTDOORS New Zealand (ONZ) believes the Safety Audit Standard for adventure activities is another step in the right direction. The standard was published last week by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MoBIE) and ONZ says it has the potential to provide significant benefits for the adventure tourism and outdoor commercial sector.

Minister of Labour Simon Bridges said the new standard set a bar for adventure activity operators, who were required to pass a safety

audit before they could become registered.ONZ chief executive Garth Dawson said the

standard was a major advance in implementing the recommendations from the Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Commercial Safety review.

“Through this initiative the New Zealand outdoor sector, in combination with MoBIE, is establishing one of the most comprehensive adventure safety environments in the world,” he said.

Recycling, sustainability and the use of native plants were stand-out features of the 2013 Ellerslie International Flower Show, where

crowds basked in fine weather and found much to entertain and educate them.

During the five-day show, 44,900 people attended – very close to the 45,000 in 2012.

John McCullough, from principal sponsor Egmont Seeds, said he was blown away by how positive the visitors were. “The energy and level of excitement was infectious”, and Simon Thompson, plant manager at Zealandia, said he couldn’t believe how “pumped up” showgoers were. “The feedback from the large planters is amazing; people seem to be really getting into planting more flowers.”

Major trends this year were flowers - although six of the 24 outdoor gardens didn’t have any floral content – followed by the use of recycled materials in and around the garden. The outstanding example of this was the garden that not only had the judges in raptures but attracted huge interest from showgoers, leaving its designers, Rebecca Hammond and Grant Stephens, over the moon. The dynamic duo designed Revolutionising Reuse, which received not only the Judges’ Supreme Award but also the Supreme Award for Design. The pair had been overwhelmed when they were given their gold medals from the judges earlier in the afternoon but then to be selected as the best exhibit in show was beyond their wildest dreams.

Their clever and colourful spaces were divided up into a series of rooms: the lounge featured plump outdoor seating with pallets, complete with herb drawers, stacked in layers for a coffee table and an old upright piano for entertainment. The focus of the adjoining eating, drinking and cooking area was an earthen pizza oven, surrounded by living herb walls, recycled glass lighting and hanging fern planters in wine bottles. Next came the tranquil chef’s garden, where edible crops grew in abundance, from white and yellow eggplants through to variegated chillies and berries. Herbs were planted in reused wine bottles, while old kitchen cupboards and sideboards added to the charm.

Hammond and Stephens started their own business, H&S Landscape Design, after graduating from Lincoln University School of Landscape Architecture. Some questioned whether it was a bold (or crazy) move to invest so much time, money and energy into an exhibit while launching a new business. Their answer was: “Where else could you meet and greet thousand of potential clients in one place while showcasing what you do best?”

Grant Stephens admits it has been a hectic few months. “During the build up, we had a sea of friends, family and neighbours helping

us. We decided Ellerslie would be the chance to showcase our skills to the world and we went all out to make it happen.”

Three Wellington designers struck gold at Ellerslie and when, on top of that, Raumati South School from the Kapiti Coast won the Yates People’s Choice award, everyone was asking, “What’s in the water up there?”

Multi-award winner Ben Hoyle, of Blue Gecko Landscapes, won yet another Ellerslie gold with his garden, A French Kiss in Akaroa. The crowds loved the way he wove perennials, hedging and flowers through the intricate lawns patterns surrounded by water.

In the Emerging Design section, Bayley LuuTomes’ Living Art garden won gold medals Living Art garden won gold medals Living Artfor design and lighting and earned him the Young Designer of the Year title. Judges said his work stood out because of both its “great use of space and materials and its faultless construction”.

Rachael Matthews, who won an Ellerslie gold medal last year and the Young Designer title, this year designed the gold medal winner in the Zealandia national flower bed competition for Auckland with City of Sails. Judges said the level of finishing and plant detailing was faultless. She was assisted by Christine Prebble, also from Wellington.

The Young Designer of the Year title went to Wellington student Bayley LuuTomes, whose Living Art rooftop garden made clever use of Living Art rooftop garden made clever use of Living Artcoloured panels.
